Chapter no 64

Saving 6 (Boys of Tommen, 3)

โ€ŒMEETING MAMMY AND MAKING PLANS

AUGUST 22ND 2004 AOIFE

MY PARENTS WERE FARย from perfect, but as I sat at the dinner table and watched them embrace Joey, I was glad they were mine.

The only skeptic in the midst was a very wary looking Kev, who seemed to have a nervous disposition around my boyfriend.

I couldnโ€™t blame my brother, not when the same hands that made me feel so good had almost throttled him.

Somehow, through the jigs and the reels, we had managed to broach the subject of what would happen after all three of us finished secondary school next year.

โ€œThat sounds lovely,โ€ Mam said after dinner, when we were all in the sitting room, with bowls ofย Vienettaย on our laps. Yeah, Mam had brought out the fancy ice-cream. โ€œAnd youโ€™re happy with the qualification youโ€™ll get from that course, yeah? Youโ€™ll get a good job from it?โ€

โ€œAbsolutely. They also have a fantastic campus, and the curriculum seems solid, which is vastly contradictory to what they have on their pamphlets and website,โ€ my brother continued to drone on, almost boring me to tears, as I sat on the couch between him and Joey.

The same Joey who looked incredibly uncertain, as he looked from one face to another.

Stretching my leg out, I discreetly nudged his foot with mine.

His wild green eyes flashed to mine, and I gave him a reassuring smile. โ€œSo, Joey, love,โ€ Mam said, when Kev finally decided to stop blowing

his own trumpet. โ€œKevโ€™s aiming to get into UCC. Aoifeโ€™s hoping for hairdressing. What are you planning to do after sixth year?โ€

โ€œWhat do you meanย whatโ€™s the plan?โ€ Dad interrupted, a spoon full of ice-cream held in the air. โ€œHeโ€™ll complete his apprenticeship and come on fulltime with me at the garage.โ€

โ€œWould you stop, Tony,โ€ Mam admonished, reaching over to slap my fatherโ€™s leg. โ€œI was asking the young lad whatย heย wanted to do after school, not whatย youย want him to do after school.โ€

โ€œI, ahโ€ฆโ€ Roughly clearing his throat, Joey set his bowl on the floor beside him and turned to my mother. โ€œWell, ah, I was hoping that Tony would consider taking me on for an apprenticeship.โ€

โ€œSee now, Trish.โ€ My father beamed like the cat that got the cream. โ€œAnd thereโ€™s no hoping required, son,โ€ he added, this time addressing Joey. โ€œI didnโ€™t spend the last five years training you up for some other fella to swoop in and steal you off me.โ€

โ€œHoly fuck.โ€ The tension in Joeyโ€™s shoulders seemed to melt away as he looked at my father like he just told him he won the lotto. โ€œAre you serious?โ€

โ€œI am,โ€ Dad replied. โ€œJust finish off this last year of school, do the best you can, keep your head down and out of trouble, and weโ€™ll talk business then.โ€

โ€œJesus.โ€ Exhaling a ragged breath, Joey dropped his head and cupped the back of his neck. โ€œThanks, Tony.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t you go scaring him off now, ya hear?โ€ Dad said, eyes on me. โ€œI canโ€™t be losing my apprentice if you two decide to part ways.โ€

โ€œYou wonโ€™t,โ€ Joey assured him. โ€œI wonโ€™t mess this up.โ€

โ€œYes, good lad,โ€ Dad said. โ€œBut I was talking to her ladyship alongside you.โ€

โ€œMe?โ€ I laughed. โ€œHow am I responsible for this metaphorical parting of ways?โ€

โ€œProbably because youโ€™re such a demanding pain in the hole,โ€ Kev offered dryly. โ€œAnd Dadโ€™s having a hard time understanding why anyone wouldย voluntarilyย agree to set up house with such a princess.โ€

โ€œHa fucking ha,โ€ I shot back, digging both of my couch buddies in the ribs when they erupted with laughter. โ€œArenโ€™t you all just soย hilarious?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t worry, Aoife, love,โ€ Mam offered then. โ€œDad didnโ€™t have to pay Joey too much to go out with you.โ€

More eruptions of laughter unfolded.

โ€œAh, donโ€™t you take any notice of them, pet,โ€ Dad crooned, through fits of laughter. โ€œIt only cost me a fiver.โ€

โ€œI hate you all,โ€ I announced dramatically, and then waved a finger in Joeyโ€™s amused face. โ€œEspecially you, turncoat.โ€
