โMEET MY DAD โ I MEAN, YOUR BOSS
AUGUST 22ND 2004 AOIFE
ON SUNDAY MORNINGย Joey had a face like thunder when he stepped out his front door and made a beeline for where I was sitting on his garden wall.
โI told you that Iโd meet you on your street,โ he snapped, quickly snatching me up, and throwing me over his shoulder. โI donโt want you anywhere near this house, Molloy.โ
His bad mood was something I expected, so I didnโt let it faze me.
Instead, I laughed at how ridiculous we looked, as he continued to stalk down the footpath, with me over his shoulder, and my ass in the air.
โIโm wearing a skirt,โ I laughed, which earned me a string of curse- words, as he quickly set me on my feet, and pulled the hem of my skirt down. โItโs nice, huh?โ Stepping closer, I grabbed his hand, and made him feel the fabric. โItโs totally fake leather, but I feel like a pure ride in it.โ
โYou look like one, too,โ he muttered, rubbing his jaw, as his eyes drank me in. โJesus, did you go to mass wearing that skirt?โ
โI sure did.โ Batting my eyes I grinned up at him. โBut donโt worry, I plan on going to confession next week to atone for my sins.โ
โAtone.โ Smirking, he slung an arm over my shoulders, as we walked. โYou donโt know the meaning of the word.โ
โAnd you do?โ Reaching around, I slipped my hand into his back pocket, my favorite place to touch him. โI didnโt see you lining up for holy communion.โ
โFair point.โ
โSo.โ Thinking carefully about how I was going to phrase my next question, I said, โweโve had fun this summer, havenโt we, Joe?โ
โYeah,โ he replied slowly. โWe have.โ
โI mean, we have, though, right?โ Exhaling heavily, I added, โWeโve spent a lot of time together, had a lot of fun, done a lot ofย stuff.โ
โIs this the part where you tell me that youโve had a great time, and youโll always cherish the memories weโve made together, but itโs time for me to get the fuck away from you now?โ
โWhat?โ I gaped at him. โNo. Why would you even say that?โ
โNot sure,โ he replied in a curious tone, rubbing his jaw. โThose damn tv shows you make me watch must be making me soft.โ
โWell, Iโd say that Iโm the one making you soft, but we both know that never happens when youโre around me.โ
โNice.โ
โThanks. So, listen, I have no plans on ending anything,โ I hurried to say. โBut Iย wasย hoping that I could run something by you really quick.โ
โSounds dangerous.โ
โOnly a little.โ I laughed nervously and looked up at him. โHow would you feel about coming over for dinner?โ
โHuh?โ Joey stared down at me like he hadnโt understood the question. โDinner,โ I repeated, swallowing deeply. โI want you to come over for
dinner.โ
โWithย you?โ
โYeah,โ I replied with an enthusiastic nod. โAnd the rest of my family.โ โNo,โ he was quick to shut down, as his hand dropped from my
shoulder like my skin had burned him. โNot happening.โ
I rolled my eyes. โJoey.โ
“I’m not interested,โ he snapped, running a hand through his hair. โIf you wanted a guy that you could take home to meet the family, then you should have stuck with Ricey. Iโm clearly not that guy, Molloy. Iโm not the kind that motherโs want to see with their daughters shacking up with.โ
โOh, please,โ I snapped. โMy mam loves you.โ
โOnly because she doesnโt know what I do to her daughter when they go to bed at night.โ
My jaw fell open. โJoe, come on.โ
โNo, no, no, donโt look at me like that,โ he warned. โDonโt give me those big eyes, Molloy. Itโs not happening. You know that I donโt want your father finding out about us. I could lose my job. How the fuck am I supposed to explain rolling up to the dinner table with his baby girl in tow?โ
I shrugged. โWe could just tell them?โ
Now he was the one whose mouth fell open. โTell me youโre joking.โ
โWhat?โ I defended. โWould it be so terrible if our parents knew about us?โ
โYes, it would,โ he argued right back. โIt would be very fucking terrible. I could lose my job.โ
โHe wonโt fire you for being my boyfriend.โ
โIโm not your boyfriend, Molloy,โ he was quick to deny. โIโm just your
โโ
โYes, you are, ya big eejit,โ I snapped, irritated now. โItโs been seven
months. Youโre my boyfriend, Iโm your girlfriend, and we love each other a lot.โ
โWe absolutely do not!โ
โSo much in fact that we love to take our clothes off and put our mouths on each otherโsโโ
โJesus Christ.โ He blew out a pained breath. โYou are hell bent on getting me killed, arenโt ya?โ
โItโs going to be fine,โ I coaxed, sliding my arm through his, as I practically dragged him down the road. โThey didnโt even sound that surprised when I mentioned it.โ
โWhat?โ He gaped at me. โWhat did you do?โ โNothing.โ
โMolloy.โ โNothing, I swear.โ โMolloy.โ
โFine.โ I threw my hands up. โI already told my parents that I invited you over for dinner.โ
โNo.โ Joey stopped walking again, and this time, I think he stopped breathing. โTell me you didnโt.โ
โAnd I also told them that you said youโd come,โ I admitted, covering my eyes with my hand and then peeking through my fingers.
His eyes bulged. โAnd?โ
โAnd they said that dinner will be ready at one oโ clock,โ I twisted the knife by adding. โWeโre having roast beef. Please donโt be mad.โ
โRoast beef?โ Running a hand through his hair, he hissed, โAoife, Iโm going toย beย roast fucking beef when your father gets his hands on me.โ
โWow,โ I mused. โYou called me Aoife. You never call me Aoife.โ
โWell, I suppose I better start practicing,โ he hissed. โYou know, for when I meet yourย parents.โ
I grinned. โAs my boyfriend.โ
โNot your boyfriend,โ he muttered, and then released a pained groan. โOh my Jesus, I just realized something.โ
โWhat?โ
โMy bossโs daughter is myย girlfriend.โ
Laughing, I patted him on the shoulder. โThat, she is.โ
