Chapter no 62

Saving 6 (Boys of Tommen, 3)

โ€ŒMEET MY DAD โ€“ I MEAN, YOUR BOSS

AUGUST 22ND 2004 AOIFE

ON SUNDAY MORNINGย Joey had a face like thunder when he stepped out his front door and made a beeline for where I was sitting on his garden wall.

โ€œI told you that Iโ€™d meet you on your street,โ€ he snapped, quickly snatching me up, and throwing me over his shoulder. โ€œI donโ€™t want you anywhere near this house, Molloy.โ€

His bad mood was something I expected, so I didnโ€™t let it faze me.

Instead, I laughed at how ridiculous we looked, as he continued to stalk down the footpath, with me over his shoulder, and my ass in the air.

โ€œIโ€™m wearing a skirt,โ€ I laughed, which earned me a string of curse- words, as he quickly set me on my feet, and pulled the hem of my skirt down. โ€œItโ€™s nice, huh?โ€ Stepping closer, I grabbed his hand, and made him feel the fabric. โ€œItโ€™s totally fake leather, but I feel like a pure ride in it.โ€

โ€œYou look like one, too,โ€ he muttered, rubbing his jaw, as his eyes drank me in. โ€œJesus, did you go to mass wearing that skirt?โ€

โ€œI sure did.โ€ Batting my eyes I grinned up at him. โ€œBut donโ€™t worry, I plan on going to confession next week to atone for my sins.โ€

โ€œAtone.โ€ Smirking, he slung an arm over my shoulders, as we walked. โ€œYou donโ€™t know the meaning of the word.โ€

โ€œAnd you do?โ€ Reaching around, I slipped my hand into his back pocket, my favorite place to touch him. โ€œI didnโ€™t see you lining up for holy communion.โ€

โ€œFair point.โ€

โ€œSo.โ€ Thinking carefully about how I was going to phrase my next question, I said, โ€œweโ€™ve had fun this summer, havenโ€™t we, Joe?โ€

โ€œYeah,โ€ he replied slowly. โ€œWe have.โ€

โ€œI mean, we have, though, right?โ€ Exhaling heavily, I added, โ€œWeโ€™ve spent a lot of time together, had a lot of fun, done a lot ofย stuff.โ€

โ€œIs this the part where you tell me that youโ€™ve had a great time, and youโ€™ll always cherish the memories weโ€™ve made together, but itโ€™s time for me to get the fuck away from you now?โ€™

โ€œWhat?โ€ I gaped at him. โ€œNo. Why would you even say that?โ€

โ€œNot sure,โ€ he replied in a curious tone, rubbing his jaw. โ€œThose damn tv shows you make me watch must be making me soft.โ€

โ€œWell, Iโ€™d say that Iโ€™m the one making you soft, but we both know that never happens when youโ€™re around me.โ€

โ€œNice.โ€

โ€œThanks. So, listen, I have no plans on ending anything,โ€ I hurried to say. โ€œBut Iย wasย hoping that I could run something by you really quick.โ€

โ€œSounds dangerous.โ€

โ€œOnly a little.โ€ I laughed nervously and looked up at him. โ€œHow would you feel about coming over for dinner?โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€ Joey stared down at me like he hadnโ€™t understood the question. โ€œDinner,โ€ I repeated, swallowing deeply. โ€œI want you to come over for

dinner.โ€

โ€œWithย you?โ€

โ€œYeah,โ€ I replied with an enthusiastic nod. โ€œAnd the rest of my family.โ€ โ€œNo,โ€ he was quick to shut down, as his hand dropped from my

shoulder like my skin had burned him. โ€œNot happening.โ€

I rolled my eyes. โ€œJoey.โ€

“I’m not interested,โ€ he snapped, running a hand through his hair. โ€œIf you wanted a guy that you could take home to meet the family, then you should have stuck with Ricey. Iโ€™m clearly not that guy, Molloy. Iโ€™m not the kind that motherโ€™s want to see with their daughters shacking up with.โ€

โ€œOh, please,โ€ I snapped. โ€œMy mam loves you.โ€

โ€œOnly because she doesnโ€™t know what I do to her daughter when they go to bed at night.โ€

My jaw fell open. โ€œJoe, come on.โ€

โ€œNo, no, no, donโ€™t look at me like that,โ€ he warned. โ€œDonโ€™t give me those big eyes, Molloy. Itโ€™s not happening. You know that I donโ€™t want your father finding out about us. I could lose my job. How the fuck am I supposed to explain rolling up to the dinner table with his baby girl in tow?โ€

I shrugged. โ€œWe could just tell them?โ€

Now he was the one whose mouth fell open. โ€œTell me youโ€™re joking.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ I defended. โ€œWould it be so terrible if our parents knew about us?โ€

โ€œYes, it would,โ€ he argued right back. โ€œIt would be very fucking terrible. I could lose my job.โ€

โ€œHe wonโ€™t fire you for being my boyfriend.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not your boyfriend, Molloy,โ€ he was quick to deny. โ€œIโ€™m just your

โ€”โ€

โ€œYes, you are, ya big eejit,โ€ I snapped, irritated now. โ€œItโ€™s been seven

months. Youโ€™re my boyfriend, Iโ€™m your girlfriend, and we love each other a lot.โ€

โ€œWe absolutely do not!โ€

โ€œSo much in fact that we love to take our clothes off and put our mouths on each otherโ€™sโ€”โ€œ

โ€œJesus Christ.โ€ He blew out a pained breath. โ€œYou are hell bent on getting me killed, arenโ€™t ya?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s going to be fine,โ€ I coaxed, sliding my arm through his, as I practically dragged him down the road. โ€œThey didnโ€™t even sound that surprised when I mentioned it.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ He gaped at me. โ€œWhat did you do?โ€ โ€œNothing.โ€

โ€œMolloy.โ€ โ€œNothing, I swear.โ€ โ€œMolloy.โ€

โ€œFine.โ€ I threw my hands up. โ€œI already told my parents that I invited you over for dinner.โ€

โ€œNo.โ€ Joey stopped walking again, and this time, I think he stopped breathing. โ€œTell me you didnโ€™t.โ€

โ€œAnd I also told them that you said youโ€™d come,โ€ I admitted, covering my eyes with my hand and then peeking through my fingers.

His eyes bulged. โ€œAnd?โ€

โ€œAnd they said that dinner will be ready at one oโ€™ clock,โ€ I twisted the knife by adding. โ€œWeโ€™re having roast beef. Please donโ€™t be mad.โ€

โ€œRoast beef?โ€ Running a hand through his hair, he hissed, โ€œAoife, Iโ€™m going toย beย roast fucking beef when your father gets his hands on me.โ€

โ€œWow,โ€ I mused. โ€œYou called me Aoife. You never call me Aoife.โ€

โ€œWell, I suppose I better start practicing,โ€ he hissed. โ€œYou know, for when I meet yourย parents.โ€

I grinned. โ€œAs my boyfriend.โ€

โ€œNot your boyfriend,โ€ he muttered, and then released a pained groan. โ€œOh my Jesus, I just realized something.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œMy bossโ€™s daughter is myย girlfriend.โ€

Laughing, I patted him on the shoulder. โ€œThat, she is.โ€
