APRIL 23RD 2004 JOEY
TROUBLE.
I was in big fucking trouble and going through some major changes to add to the cluster fuck of a mix.
On the one hand, since I turned seventeen everything at home had steadily gotten worse.
Dad was drinking more than normal these days, which only meant one thing.
Mam was self-medicating with more valium than usual โ something I had realized the other night when I broke into her stash for my nightly fix and found it almost completely gone.
Shannon was being continuously tormented at school. The boys were on edge.
And I was beyond agitated.
For as far back as I could remember, my coping mechanism for when shit hit the fan at home had always been one similar to my motherโs.
The only difference was that I didnโt have a prescription from a doctor for what I needed.
And I needed it.
Badly.
On the other hand, there was Molloy.
That was it.
She was the only reason I had toย notย lose myself. Because I told her that I would try.
And Iโd been trying, dammit.
I was trying so fucking hard.
To be honest, the only reason Iโd managed to hold out as long as I had was the thought of how she would look at me if she found out.
She was a fucking beautiful distraction from a life of bullshit.
But even she couldnโt take the edge off how I was feeling tonight.
Not after Iโd taken just about all I could at the hands of my prick of a father.
My body was aching in ways that I never knew it could and there was only one thing I knew that could help me.
And I hated myself for being weak enough to need it.
โWell, if it isnโt the prodigal prick,โ Shane announced, when I walked into his sitting room late Friday night. โWhere the fuck have you been hiding, Lynchy? I thought that I was going to have to come break your legs for my money.โ
Pillows of smoke wafted in the air, and the stench of alcohol, mixed with sex, piss, weed, and dog was extreme.
Jesus.
โIโve been busy,โ I replied, tossing a wad of notes on his lap, inclining my head to three older men in the corner. โAnd you know Iโm good for it.โ
โTrue that.โ Shooing one of his three bullmastiffs off the couch, he gestured for me to take a seat. I wasnโt stupid โ or suicidal โ enough to say no so I sank down while he counted and then tucked my money into his jeans pocket.
โSo, whatโs been happening, lad?โ He asked. โWhy havenโt I seen you around lately? You on the straight and narrow again?โ
โSomething like that,โ I replied, taking the spliff from his outstretched hand. โIโm keeping my head down.โ
โI get you, lad,โ he replied, nodding as if he understood. โHeard about your sister getting jumped the other week. Sad stuff. Was surprised when you didnโt call for a fix, though.โ
โLike I said.โ Letting my head fall back, I slowly released the smoke from my lungs. โIโm keeping my head down.โ
โBut youโre back now.โ
I sighed in resignation. โYeah.โ
Iโm back.
โFair play, lad,โ he mused, clearly stoned off his head, as he slid a tin out from under the couch and lifted the lid off. โSo, whatโs new? Howโs the family?โ
โSame old shit,โ I replied, taking another deep drag, as I watched him rummage around in a stash of pills, โdifferent day.โ
โYou want anything stronger than 512s?โ he asked, holding up a bag of brownish powder. Heroin. โGuaranteed to blow your fucking mind.โ
โNo.โ I shook my head. โJust oxy.โ
โYou know where I am when you need something that hits harder.โ Humming in contentment, he separated the pills into a small baggie. โSo, I heard from one of the boys that youโve got yourself some regular pussy.โ
Stiffening, I resisted the urge to tell him to go fuck himself. Like I said before; I wasnโt suicidal.
โDonโt we all, lad.โ
Shane laughed. โDonโt be coy, fucker. I heard youโre after setting yourself up nicely with that ride of a barmaid from The Dinniman. The blonde with the legs.โ
โAnd?โ I stiffened, not fucking liking where this was going one bit. It unnerved me that he knew about Molloy because it meant that he was keeping tabs on me. โWhatโs it to you?โ
โIs she interested in a making a bit of side cash? I could use a pair of tits like that to help shift someโโ
โLeave her out of your plans,โ I warned, standing up. โKeep her out of your head, period. She hasnโt got a damn thing to do with anything.โ
โClearly she has,โ he taunted, chuckling. โJust ask her,โ he tried to coax. โAsk the girl, and see if sheโs open to making some easy money by shifting a fewโโ
โNo,โ I bit out, seething. โNot fucking happening. Sheโs not like you.โ โYou mean sheโs not likeย us?โ he mocked.
โIโm no dealer, Shane,โ I said quietly, taking another deep drag, before handing him his spliff. โNever was and never will be.โ
โFamous last words,โ he chuckled, as he watched me move for the door. โRelax, lad, I wonโt look at your girl.โ
โSheโs a hard limit for me,โ I warned. โLook at her and all bets are off, ya hear.โ
โYeah, yeah, itโs all good,โ he chuckled, waving the small bag in his hand around. โHave you forgotten something?โ
Blowing out a frustrated breath, I snatched it up and quickly shoved it into my pocket. โThanks.โ
โJust remember Iโm always here for ya,โ he called after me, as I made my exit. โThe doorโs always open.โ
โYeah, I know.โ
Thatโs the problem.
