Chapter no 47

Saving 6 (Boys of Tommen, 3)

โ€ŒHONOR RESTORED

FEBRUARY 23RD 2004 AOIFE

LATE MONDAY NIGHT,ย when I had bored myself to tears with homework, I decided to change it up by going downstairs and annoying my parents.

Unfortunately for me, the members of my family were in similar mischievous form.

โ€œWell, would you look at Lady Muck herself,โ€ Mam said the minute I walked into the sitting room, as she turned down the volume on the tv control, and gave me her full attention. โ€œWhat happened, Aoife, love? Did your mattress finally spit you out?โ€

โ€œHa-ha.โ€ I rolled my eyes. โ€œVery funny, but no, nothing so dramatic. I was studying.โ€

โ€œWith books?โ€ Kev tossed out from his perch on the couch.

โ€œYes, Kev, with actual books,โ€ I shot back, flopping down on the couch next to him. โ€œDonโ€™t act so surprised. I can open a book, you know.โ€

โ€œAh, but can you read the inscription inside?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t ye be teasing my little pet,โ€ Dad interjected, from the other side of the room, where he sat with Mam in their matching armchairs. โ€œHow are you, Aoife, love?โ€

โ€œDaddyโ€™s girl,โ€ Kev fake coughed.

โ€œIโ€™m grand, dad,โ€ I shot back with a smug grin. โ€œHow was work?โ€

โ€œAh, grand, love,โ€ he replied, resting his slipper-clad feet on the coffee table. โ€œYoung Joey was in flying form this evening.โ€

I bet he was.

I grinned. โ€œThatโ€™s nice.โ€

โ€œDid you hear about our Aoife and Paul breaking up?โ€ Kev interjected then, digging me in the thigh with his foot.

โ€œWhat did I tell you about touching me with those hooves?โ€ I snapped, batting his foot away with a cushion.

โ€œI heard something about that alright,โ€ Mam replied, no doubt having heard it from Katieโ€™s mother next door. โ€œA few weeks ago now, isnโ€™t that right, Aoife?โ€

โ€œYep.โ€

โ€œReally?โ€ Dadโ€™s eyes widened. โ€œYou never said anything, Aoife, love.โ€ โ€œOh, um, yeah,โ€ I replied, huffing out a breath. โ€œWell, thereโ€™s not much

to say. Itโ€™s dead in the water.โ€ โ€œFor now,โ€ Kev snickered.

โ€œForever,โ€ I corrected, smacking him over the head with the cushion. โ€œAsshole.โ€

โ€œAh, donโ€™t you worry, pet,โ€ Mam coaxed, setting down her knitting. โ€œIโ€™m sure heโ€™s already planning on how to win you back as it stands.โ€

โ€œHeโ€™d be flogging a dead horse,โ€ I replied, narrowly avoiding a cushion to the head from my brother. โ€œWeโ€™re done, Mam.โ€

โ€œSure theyโ€™ll be back together again in no time,โ€ Dad said, turning to look at my mother for help. โ€œTheyโ€™re on and off like the weather, those two.โ€

โ€œNot this time, I reckon,โ€ Kev taunted. โ€œI donโ€™t think your darling Aoife is too upset about the breakup, either?โ€ He winked knowingly as he climbed to his feet and wandered out of the room. โ€œIsnโ€™t that right, Aoife?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™sย right, Kevin,โ€ I replied, glaring at his retreating back. โ€œI couldnโ€™t give a flying fuโ€” โ€œ

โ€œFig,โ€ Mam quickly interjected. โ€œCouldnโ€™t give a flying fig, Aoife.โ€ โ€œOne of those, too,โ€ I shot back with a smirk. โ€œHe can go to hell.โ€

โ€œWell good,โ€ Dad said with a supportive nod. โ€œHe was a right little bollox, Trish, wasnโ€™t he?โ€

Mam laughed. โ€œHe was a bit of one, alright, Tony.โ€ โ€œA right uppity little fucker.โ€

โ€œSure what would you expect from a Garda superintendentโ€™s son?โ€ โ€œThatโ€™s true, love. To be honest, it used to stand the hair on the back of

my neck when youโ€™d bring him over to the house,โ€ Dad admitted with a rueful expression. โ€œI was afraid of my life that you would take him into the shed and expose me.โ€

โ€œAh, here now, Tony,โ€ Mam chuckled. โ€œI doubt the Gards would come knocking on the door over a few bottles of home-brewed Poitรญn.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™d never know, love,โ€ Dad mumbled. โ€œYouโ€™d never know.โ€

โ€œSo, any new love interests, sister dearest?โ€ Kev asked when he returned a moment later with a bowl of cereal. โ€œAny short-tempered, would-be mechanics in your sights?โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s that now?โ€ Mamโ€™s ears pricked up. โ€œYouโ€™ve got a new boyfriend already?โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ Kev mused. โ€œShe sure does, Mam.โ€

โ€œNo, I donโ€™t,โ€ I bit out, resisting the homicidal urge I had to throttle my brother. โ€œKevโ€™s just being a little shit stirrer.โ€

โ€œOh, come on,โ€ he laughed. โ€œItโ€™s so obvious.โ€ โ€œWhat is?โ€

โ€œNothing,โ€ I strangled out. โ€œAoife and Joey.โ€

โ€œKevin!โ€ I hissed, red-faced. Joey and I were trying to be discreet, and up until now, I thought we had been doing a great job. Apparently, nothing got past my brother, though.

Nosey fucker.

โ€œJoey?โ€ Dadโ€™s eyes widened. โ€œMy Joey?โ€

โ€œI think that youโ€™ll find heโ€™s more Aoifeโ€™s Joey than yours, Dad,โ€ my brother sneered. โ€œAt least, thatโ€™s what Iโ€™ve heard at school.โ€

Oh, you are a dead man.

โ€œThose rumors are a bunch of crap,โ€ I choked out, lying through my teeth. โ€œAnd you being my brother should know better than to believe them.โ€

โ€œWhat rumors?โ€ Both Mam and Dad asked in unison. โ€œThere was a fight,โ€ I blurted out of nowhere.

โ€œA fight?โ€ Dadโ€™s frown matched my brotherโ€™s. โ€œWhat fight?โ€

I looked to Kev to help me, but he came up with an empty shrug. So much for twins being able to read each otherโ€™s mind.

My one was a dud.

Thinking on the spot, I quickly reeled off what I hoped was a generic, watered-down version of the truth. โ€œIt happened a while back. Remember that black eye I got after Christmas? Well, it didnโ€™t happen from falling off Caseyโ€™s rollerblades like I told you guys.โ€

Mam rolled her eyes. โ€œObviously.โ€

โ€œWhat happened to you?โ€ Dad was quick to demand. โ€œDid someone hit you?โ€ His eyes narrowed. โ€œDid Joeyโ€”โ€œ

โ€œNo, no, Jesus, no, Dad,โ€ I quickly appeased. โ€œJoey never laid a finger on me.โ€ย Well, none I didnโ€™t beg him to.ย โ€œBasically, Paul was saying a few shady things about me around the place.โ€ย Like slut. And whore. And cock tease.ย โ€œAnd when Joey heard about it, he pulled him up on it.โ€ Shrugging, I added, โ€œFor your benefit, apparently. You know, since Iโ€™m your daughter, and he has a lot of time for you ever since you took him on at the garage. Thatโ€™s why Joey got arrested for fighting early in the new year. Remember?โ€

Dad nodded. โ€œI do.โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€ I blew out a shaky breath. โ€œWell, anyway, I got the black eye from Paul when I tried to break up their fight. In his defense, itย wasย an

accident,โ€ I begrudgingly admitted. โ€œBut once the rumor mill got wind of Joey sticking up for me, people started gossiping about us, putting two and two together and coming up with five.โ€ I let out a breath. โ€œYep, that pretty much sums it all up.โ€

Kev snorted and then quickly buried the sound with a cough when I gave him a look that threatened violence. โ€œYeah, that sounds about right.โ€

Dad stared at me for a long moment before exhaling heavily. โ€œWell, I hope Joey gave that bollox a good stuffing.โ€

โ€œWhat was he saying about you, love?โ€ Mam asked, concern etched on her face. โ€œWould you like me to phone his mother, because I will. Iโ€™ll give her a good piece of my mindโ€”โ€œ

โ€œNo, Mam, itโ€™s grand,โ€ I hurried to say. โ€œPaul was just salty because I wouldnโ€™t, wellโ€ฆโ€ I shrugged, โ€œBecause I wouldnโ€™tโ€ฆโ€

โ€œHave sex with him,โ€ Kev offered dryly. โ€œHe was pissed because Aoife wouldnโ€™t have sex with him after four years of stringing him along and treating him like an afterthought.โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t string him along,โ€ I snapped. โ€œAnd it was three and a half years, not four.โ€

Kev cocked a brow. โ€œSureย you didnโ€™t.โ€

โ€œFine,โ€ I reluctantly conceded. โ€œMaybe there is a teeny tiny bit of truth to that statement, but that doesnโ€™t mean that I have toโ€”โ€œ

โ€œLay on your back and spread your legs for him?โ€ Kev shook his head. โ€œBecause thatโ€™s what Paul thinks youโ€™re doing for Lynchy.โ€

โ€œMore lies,โ€ I bit out, glaring at my brother.

โ€œKevin,โ€ Dad barked. โ€œDonโ€™t be saying those kinds of things in front of your sister.โ€

โ€œWhat kinds of things?โ€

โ€œYou know,โ€ Dad mumbled, flustered. โ€œSex type things. Sheโ€™s too young for that sort of talk.โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s the same age as me.โ€

โ€œStill,โ€ Dad huffed, looking incredibly uncomfortable. โ€œItโ€™s not right, son.โ€

โ€œWas that it, Aoife?โ€ Mam asked me. โ€œPaul was making up stories about you?โ€

I shrugged. โ€œPretty much.โ€

โ€œAnd thereโ€™s no truth to the rumors about Joey?โ€ โ€œNone at all,โ€ I lied.

โ€œWell, I never.โ€ Dad looked to Mam and shook his head. โ€œFair play to young Joey, having my back like that.โ€

โ€œYeah,โ€ Kev drawled, tone laced with sarcasm. โ€œLetโ€™s all raise a glass to the honorable Joey Lynch.โ€

โ€œWhat a good lad.โ€ Dad beamed at my mother. โ€œDefending my daughterโ€™s honor.โ€

Kev snorted again, and, this time, he didnโ€™t even bother to hide it. โ€œIโ€™m off to bed.โ€

โ€œYeah,โ€ I squeezed out, as the image of Joeyโ€™s head between my legs filled my mind. โ€œMy honorโ€™s restored.โ€
