FEBRUARY 14TH 2002 AOIFE
FIFTY-EIGHT MINUTES.
Thatโs how long the shower motor hummed above me. Thatโs how long it took for Joey to tame the beast.
Another ten minutes passed before he finally emerged from the bathroom.
Re-dressed in his school uniform, with his blond hair cocking up in forty different directions, and his cheeks noticeably flushed, he stepped into the kitchen, towel in hand. โThanks.โ
โBetter?โ I asked, unable to suppress the laugh that escaped me, as I flipped a piece of French toast in the pan. โFeelingย relieved?โ
โFunny,โ Joey growled, but the reluctant smile on his face assured me that he wasnโt mad.
โDid it go down?โ
โEventually,โ he admitted, with a wolfish smile. โI thought I was going to have to go to A&E for a while there.โ
โImagine if you had,โ I snorted, switching off the hob and plating up the French toast. โWe would have needed to hitch a trailer onto the taxi to cart that stallion between your legs.โ
โIโm never going to hear the end of this, am I?โ
โNo, probably not,โ I agreed, still laughing. โHere.โ I handed him a plate stacked with my homemade goodness. โYou need to replenish your life force.โ
โYou cooked all by yourself.โ His brows rose in surprise. โIโm impressed.โ
โI have a pretty decent home economics partner who taught me a thing or two,โ I replied, moving to the table with my own plate. โHeโs an asshole, but he knows his way around the kitchen.โ
โSo, this home economics partner,โ Joey said, following me over to the table. โIs he your friend?โ
My heart flipped in my chest. โHe was.โ โWas?โ
Nodding, I sank down on my chair and took a bite or toast. โHe used to be my best friend.โ
โWhat changed?โ โWe had a fight.โ โIs that right?โ
โUh-huh. He broke my heart.โ
Pain flicked in Joeyโs eyes. โMolloy.โ โJoke.โ
Relief flooded his features when he swallowed my lie. โWell, I hear this partner of yours feels shit about the fight the two of you had.โ
โDoes he now?โ
โYeah.โ Joey nodded. โHe misses his friend.โ
My heart flipped. โHe should miss her. Sheโs amazing.โ He smirked. โHe wants her back.โ
โShe never left.โ I swallowed deeply. โShe just needed a time out.โ โGood.โ He nodded. โBecause if she did leave, he wouldnโt like it.โ โHe wouldnโt?โ
โNo.โ His green eyes locked on mine from across the table. โHe wouldnโt.โ
Exhaling a shaky breath, I reached across the table and laid my hand, palm up. โNice moves.โ
He stared at my hand for a long beat before slowly placing his hand on top of mine. โNice everything.โ
