Chapter no 26

Saving 6 (Boys of Tommen, 3)

โ€ŒAT LEAST THAT

FEBRUARY 1ST 2002 AOIFE

MR. NYHAN COULD SUSPENDย me for walking out of detention if he wanted to.

Hell, he could threaten me with expulsion, and it wouldnโ€™t matter a damn because there was no way that I was ever willingly walking back into that classroom.

I made it to the carpark before I broke down.

Releasing a pained cry, I slumped down on the concrete footpath and dropped my head in my hands, crying hard and ugly.

I hated him.

I wanted to hate him so much. Iย neededย to hateย him.

You need to stop loving him firstโ€ฆ

โ€œAoife,โ€ a familiar voice said, and I stiffened.

No, no, no, not nowโ€ฆ

โ€œGo away.โ€ โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong?โ€ โ€œI saidย go away!โ€

Doing the complete opposite of what I wanted, Paul sank down on the footpath beside me. โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong?โ€

โ€œNothing.โ€ Sniffling, I reached up to wipe my eyes with the back of my hand. โ€œIโ€™m fine.โ€

โ€œDid he hurt you earlier?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€ I sniffled again. โ€œI hurt myself.โ€ โ€œHow?โ€

I gave my heart to the wrong person.ย โ€œIt doesnโ€™t matter.โ€ โ€œIt clearly does.โ€

โ€œJust leave it alone, okay?โ€ โ€œTalk to me, Aoife.โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t.โ€

โ€œYou can.โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t want to hear this, Paul.โ€ โ€œTry me.โ€

โ€œI like him, okay!โ€ I heard myself choke out. โ€œIย likeย him.โ€ I felt Paul stiffen beside me. โ€œJoey.โ€

Exhaling a ragged breath, I nodded once and then dropped my head in my hands, feeling a flurry of guilt and relief. โ€œIโ€™m really sorry.โ€

โ€œSince when?โ€

Since day one.ย โ€œI donโ€™t know.โ€

โ€œWere you with him?โ€ he asked quietly. I shook my head. โ€œNo.โ€

He eyed me uncertainly. โ€œNo?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ I confirmed, swallowing deeply. โ€œNo.โ€

He stared at me for a long moment before releasing a shaky breath. โ€œAt least that.โ€

โ€œYeah,โ€ I croaked out.ย At least that.

โ€œDo you still care about me?โ€ โ€œYes,โ€ I replied honestly. โ€œDo you care about him?โ€

I didnโ€™t answer his question.

I couldnโ€™t.

I wasnโ€™t that cruel.

โ€œDo you like him more than you like me?โ€ โ€œItโ€™s different.โ€

โ€œSo, what are you telling me, Aoif?โ€ His eyes searched mine and I was incredibly impressed with how calm he was remaining. It actually made this harder because he was being the sweet guy he was when we first met, which made me feel like the biggest dick in Ballylaggin. โ€œAre you saying that you want to be with him?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€ I shook my head. โ€œThatโ€™s not going to happen.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t understand.โ€ His brows furrowed. โ€œIf you havenโ€™t been with him and donโ€™t plan on being with him then why?โ€

โ€œI just needed to tell you, okay?โ€ I wiped my cheek and exhaled shakily. โ€œI needed to get it off my chest.โ€

Paul was quiet for a very long time before speaking again. โ€œI need to tell you something.โ€

โ€œIs it going to hurt?โ€ โ€œIt could.โ€

โ€œAs bad as what I just told you hurt?โ€ โ€œMaybe a bit worse.โ€

Oh god.ย โ€œIs it about those rumors?โ€ โ€œSort of.โ€

Exhaling a shaky breath, I nodded for him to continue.

โ€œI, ahโ€ฆโ€ Exhaling a pained breath, he looked down at his feet and said, โ€œI slept with someone.โ€

Well crap.

โ€œYou lost your virginity?โ€ That hurt worse than I had expected it to. โ€œTo who?โ€

โ€œA girl from Tommen.โ€

โ€œSo it was true.โ€ My breath caught in my chest, and I forced myself to remain calm and show him the same decency that he had shown me. โ€œWhatโ€™s her name?โ€

โ€œBella.โ€ He dropped his head in his hands and groaned, โ€œBella Wilkinson.โ€

โ€œWhen?โ€

โ€œAfterย you broke up with me at Halloween.โ€

โ€œHow long after?โ€ I asked, surprising myself with how level my tone was.

โ€œAoife.โ€

โ€œHow long, Paul?โ€ โ€œDoes it matter?โ€

โ€œI gave you my truth.โ€ โ€œThat same night.โ€ โ€œAt the disco?โ€

He nodded once.

โ€œWow,โ€ I breathed, shoulders sagging. Well, that was just perfect.

Joey was fucking Danielle, Paul was fucking this Bella, meanwhile, I was fucking myself over.

Perfect.

โ€œIโ€™m sorry, Aoife,โ€ he hurried to say. โ€œIt was a huge mistake. It meant nothing, and I honest to God felt like the worst piece of shit on the planet afterwards.โ€

โ€œWas she blonde?โ€ โ€œHuh?โ€

โ€œBlonde,โ€ I croaked out. โ€œWas she blonde?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ he replied, tone gruff. โ€œShe had black hair.โ€ โ€œAt least that.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m so sorry, Aoif.โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€ I dropped my head on his shoulder and sighed. โ€œMe, too, Paul.โ€ โ€œCan I ask you a question?โ€

I nodded.

โ€œWhy havenโ€™t you?โ€ โ€œWhy havenโ€™t I what?โ€

โ€œYou and him.โ€ He cleared his throat. โ€œWe were off. You had the perfect opportunity to get him out of your system.โ€

โ€œGet him out of my system?โ€ โ€œYou know what I mean.โ€

I turned to look at him but didnโ€™t have an answer. โ€œItโ€™s not going to happen,โ€ I offered instead, physically recoiling at the memory of hearing those godawful words coming out of Joeyโ€™s mouth. All mixed with the memory of seeing him with her that night. โ€œI need to get over him.โ€

โ€œWell, I donโ€™t want things to be over between us,โ€ he said, reaching over to take my hand in his. โ€œI care a lot about you, Aoif.โ€

โ€œI care about you, too,โ€ I replied, feeling numb.

โ€œThis is just a bad patch,โ€ he continued, lacing our fingers together. โ€œWe can come through it. We always do.โ€

โ€œHow?โ€ I whispered. โ€œHow can we make this work?โ€ And more importantly, why should we?

โ€œI suppose by telling each other the truth,โ€ he offered quietly. โ€œToday was a good start.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know if Iโ€™m invested in this,โ€ I admitted weakly. โ€œMy head is all over the place, Paul.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™ll figure it out,โ€ he replied, wrapping his arm around my shoulder. โ€œItโ€™ll be okay.โ€

No, it wonโ€™t.
