JANUARY 7TH 2002 AOIFE
JOEY WASย late to school on our first day back after Christmas break. When he finally showed up, fifteen minutes into the third class of the day, the circles under his eyes had my anxiety rising at a rapid pace.
โJesus,โ I whispered, when he slumped down beside me. โYou look like shit.โ
โThanks,โ he grumbled, dropping setting his elbows on our desk and dropping his head in his hands. โYou look like dinner.โ
I flamed with heat at the compliment. โThanks.โ โNo problem.โ
โWhat happened to you?โ Glancing around class, I checked to see that our teacher was looking elsewhere before leaning in close and whispering, โAre you high again?โ
โNo, Molloy,โ he mumbled, slumped over our desk. โNot high. Just tired.โ
โWhy?โ
โBecause I havenโt closed an eye all night.โ โAgain, why?โ
โBecauseโโ he paused to yawn. โSeanโs cutting a tooth.โ โSean?โ I stared blankly at his head. โWhoโs Sean?โ โHeโs my babyโโ
โYourย baby?โ I interrupted, eyes widening.
โBrother.โ He lifted his head to glare at me. โGive me some credit, will ya?โ
โSorry.โ I winced. โI justโฆI didnโt know that your mother had another baby.โ
โYep.โ
โWhen?โ
โHalloween.โ
โHalloween?โ My mouth fell open. โJoe, we legit talk every day and you never once mentioned that your mam had another baby.โ
โWhy would I?โ he asked, confusion etched on his face.
โBecause thatโs the sort of thing that friends tell each other,โ I explained. โFriends tell each other personal details like that.โ
โMolloy, my mam had another baby.โ
I rolled my eyes. โNot two months after the event.โ He shrugged in response.
โSo, tell me about Sean?โ I asked, resting my elbow on the desk, and twisting sideways to face him.
โWhatโs to tell?โ Joey replied, mirroring my actions. โHeโs small, heโs cute, he shits everywhere, and he screams the house down.โ
โAnd he kept you up last night crying?โ
โI told you,โ he growled defensively. โHeโs cutting a tooth. Itโs not his fault.โ
โI know that,โ I coaxed, resting my hand on his forearm. โI wasnโt blaming him. I was just thinking that the walls of your house must be paper thin if he kept you up all night.โ
Joey looked at me for a long time before shaking his head. โWhat?โ I asked. โWhat does that look mean?โ
โNothing.โ โLiar.โ
โMaybe Iโll tell you in another two months.โ
I bit back a smile. โYou look like you could use a pick-me-up.โ โYeah, I know, but I donโt get paid until Friday.โ
โI was talking about chocolate, Joe.โ โDo you have some?โ
โI always have some.โ
