Chapter no 69

Saving 6 (Boys of Tommen, 3)

โ€ŒBACK TO THE DOG HOUSE

SEPTEMBER 1ST 2004 JOEY

I WAS BACKย in the doghouse.

Strewn out on her bedroom floor, bollocks-naked, with a fluffy white pillow under my head, and a pink blanket thrown over me, was how I found myself when I came to.

โ€œSo he lives,โ€ a familiar voice drawled sarcastically.

Shivering violently, I slowly pulled myself up to find a furious pair of green eyes glaring at me.

Sitting with her back to her door, she glowered at me when she asked, โ€œWhat did he give you?โ€

I opened my mouth to lie, but she got there first.

โ€œDonโ€™t even think about lying to me,โ€ she warned, tossing the tea towel that had been resting on her shoulder at my head. โ€œIf you saw what came out of your body, what I had to clean off you, then youโ€™d know that lying is pointless.โ€

Disgusted with myself, I looked around her disheveled room, her now stripped bed, and bit back a groan. โ€œDid Iโ€ฆโ€

โ€œDestroy my room in the process of destroying your brain?โ€ she was quick to hiss. โ€œYep.โ€

โ€œSorry.โ€ I blew out a breath. โ€œIโ€™ll clean everythingโ€”โ€œ

โ€œItโ€™s already done,โ€ she snapped. โ€œAnd before you think about running out on me without an explanation, just know that every stitch of clothing you had on is currently in the dryer downstairs. So, no, Joe, I donโ€™t want your help to clean. All I want from you is answers.โ€

โ€œWhat do you want to know?โ€

โ€œStart with what you took this morning, and weโ€™ll go from there.โ€

โ€œFuck.โ€ Reaching up, I cupped the back of my head and sighed before reluctantly admitting, โ€œI had a slip.โ€

โ€œA slip.โ€

There was no point in lying to her, even if lying was my first language, something Iโ€™d inherited from my family.

I couldnโ€™t do it now, though.

The look in her eyes told me that I had one chance to fix this and only one.

โ€œIโ€™m not going to make excuses,โ€ I said. โ€œThereโ€™s no excusing it.โ€ โ€œNo.โ€ Her voice was thick with emotion. โ€œThereโ€™s not.โ€

โ€œContrary to today, I really have been trying,โ€ I added, running a hand through my hair. โ€œMore than you know.โ€

โ€œThenย why?โ€œ Her voice cracked, and I watched as a tear trickled down her cheek. โ€œWhy doย this? Youโ€™ve been doing so well. Iย knowย you have. I know youโ€™re not perfect, okay. I know you smoke weed. I know you have your demons and your secrets, but you wereย trying. You werenโ€™t getting all fucked up like this!โ€

โ€œHe broke Tadhgโ€™s nose last night,โ€ I heard myself admit. โ€œAnd I wasnโ€™t there to stop him.โ€

โ€œYour father?โ€ Her breath hitched in her throat. โ€œYour father broke Tadhgโ€™s nose?โ€

โ€œYeah. He did.โ€ I replied flatly, hating myself with every fiber of my being for telling her things that she had no business knowing.

For dragging her deeper into my fucked-up world.

โ€œBut heโ€™s only a child,โ€ she cried, covering her mouth with her hand. โ€œHeโ€™s just a little kid.โ€

โ€œDoesnโ€™t matter,โ€ I deadpanned. โ€œAbusive alcoholics see no age or gender. All they see is a punching bag to take aim at when the notion strikes them.โ€

โ€œJoey.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™tย pity me,โ€ I warned shakily, holding a hand up. โ€œThatโ€™s not what I want from you. Not ever.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not,โ€ she whispered. โ€œI wonโ€™t.โ€

โ€œAnyway, I couldnโ€™t handle what happened last night,โ€ I admitted.ย Still canโ€™t.ย โ€œSo, I did what I usually do when shit gets too heavy at home.โ€ I shrugged. โ€œI called Shane.โ€

Tears streamed down her cheeks as she watched me watch her. โ€œAnd?โ€ โ€œAnd.โ€ I exhaled a heavy sigh before admitting, โ€œI got what I needed to

help me handle it.โ€ โ€œWhich was?โ€

โ€œSomething I havenโ€™t tried before.โ€ โ€œSomething bad?โ€

Bitter with regret, I nodded my response, which caused Molloy to choke out a huge, gut-wrenching sob.

โ€œYou canโ€™t do that again.โ€ Scrambling onto her hands and knees, she crawled over to where I was sitting and threw her arms around me. โ€œYou canโ€™t, Joe. You just canโ€™t.โ€ Crying hard, Molloy clung to me like a baby monkey, holding onto my body like it was something of great importance to her. โ€œI need you. I need you, Joe. You canโ€™t do this to yourself.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s okay.โ€ Rattled by just how deeply her pain affected me, I wrapped my arms around her. โ€œShh. Itโ€™s okay.โ€

โ€œWe could get out of here,โ€ she sobbed against my neck. โ€œYou and me. We could just load up the car and leave this shithole town behind us. I would go with you, Joe. I would. I love you,โ€ she continued to sob,

peppering kisses down my neck. โ€œI love you. I love you. I love you so fucking much, it makes me want to die.โ€

I believed her, and that scared me worse than the prospect of staying.

Because I knew that she was willing to do anything to help me, and, in the end, it wouldnโ€™t be enough, because I was too fucking gone in the mind. She was too good for me, too fucking good for the world. I knew deep down inside that I needed to let her go in order to give her some chance of a

future.

But I justย couldnโ€™t.

โ€œI canโ€™t leave them, Molloy,โ€ I whispered, tightening my arms around her, when her body racked with sobs.ย Iโ€™m not my brother.ย โ€œI have to stay.โ€
