Chapter no 33 – WARNER

Restore Me (Shatter Me Book 4)

โ€œTrouble in paradise, Mr Warner?โ€

Iโ€™ve got him by the throat in seconds, shock disfiguring his expression as I slam his body against the wall. โ€œYou,โ€ I say angrily. โ€œYou forced me into this impossible position.ย Why?โ€

Castle tries to swallow but canโ€™t, his eyes wide but unafraid. When he speaks his words are raspy, suffocated. โ€œYou had to do it,โ€ he chokes out. โ€œIt had to happen. She needed to be warned, and it had to come from you.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t believe you,โ€ I shout, shoving him harder against the wall. โ€œAnd I donโ€™t know why I ever trusted you.โ€

โ€œPlease, son. Put me down.โ€

I ease up, only a little, and he takes in several lungfuls of air before saying, โ€œI havenโ€™t lied to you, Mr Warner. She had to hear the truth. And if sheโ€™d heard this from anyone else sheโ€™d never forgive you. But at least nowโ€โ€”he coughsโ€”โ€œwith time, she might. Itโ€™s your only chance at happiness.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ I drop my hand. Drop him. โ€œSince when have you cared about my happiness?โ€

Heโ€™s quiet for too long, massaging his throat as he stares at me. Finally, he says, โ€œYou think I donโ€™t know what your father did to you? What he put you through?โ€

And now I take a step back.

โ€œYou think I donโ€™t know your story, son? You think Iโ€™d let you into my worldโ€”offer you sanctuary among my peopleโ€”if I really thought you were going to hurt us?โ€

Iโ€™m breathing hard. Suddenly confused. Feeling exposed.

โ€œYou donโ€™t know anything about me,โ€ I say, feeling the lie even as I say it.

Castle smiles, but thereโ€™s something wounded in it. โ€œYouโ€™re just a boy,โ€ he says quietly. โ€œYouโ€™re only nineteen years old, Mr Warner. And I think you forget that all the time. You have no perspective, no idea that youโ€™ve only barely lived. Thereโ€™s still so much life ahead of you.โ€ He sighs. โ€œI try to tell Kenji the same thing, but heโ€™s like you. Stubborn,โ€ he says. โ€œSo stubborn.โ€

โ€œIโ€™mย nothingย like him.โ€

โ€œDid you know that youโ€™re a year younger than him?โ€

โ€œAge is irrelevant. Nearly all my soldiers are older than me.โ€ Castle laughs.

โ€œAll of you kids,โ€ he says, shaking his head. โ€œYou suffer too much. You have these horrible, tragic histories. Volatile personalities. Iโ€™ve always wanted to help,โ€ he says. โ€œIโ€™ve always wanted to fix that. Make this world a better place for you kids.โ€

โ€œWell, you can go save the world somewhere else,โ€ I say. โ€œAnd feel free to babysit Kishimoto all you like. But Iโ€™m not your responsibility. I donโ€™t need your pity.โ€

Castle only tilts his head at me. โ€œYou will never escape my pity, Mr Warner.โ€

My jaw clenches.

โ€œYou boys,โ€ he says, his eyes distracted for a moment, โ€œyou remind me so much of my own sons.โ€

I pause. โ€œYou have children?โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ he says. And I feel his sudden, breathtaking wave of pain wash over me as he says, โ€œI did.โ€

I take several unconscious steps backward, reeling from the rush of his shared emotions. I can only stare at him. Surprised. Curious.

Sorry. โ€œHey.โ€

At the sound of Nazeeraโ€™s voice I spin around, startled. Sheโ€™s with Haider, the two of them looking grave.

โ€œWhat is it?โ€ I say.

โ€œWe need to talk.โ€ She looks at Castle. โ€œYour name is Castle, right?โ€ He nods.

โ€œYeah, I know youโ€™re wise to this business, Castle, so Iโ€™m going to need you to get in on this, too.โ€ Nazeera whips her finger through the air to draw a circle around the four of us. โ€œWe all need to talk.ย Now.โ€
