Chapter no 31 – WARNER

Restore Me (Shatter Me Book 4)

When Juliette joins us in the morning, she is almost unrecognizable.

I was forced, despite every inclination to bury myself in other duties, to rejoin our group today on account of what seems now to have been the inevitable arrival of our three final guests. The twin children of the South American supreme and the son of the supreme commander of Africa all arrived early this morning. The supreme commander of Oceania has no children, so I have to assume this is the last of our visitors. And all of them have arrived in time to accompany us to the symposium. Very convenient.

I should have realized.

I had just been in the middle of introducing the three of them to Castle and Kenji, who came down to greet our new visitors, when Juliette made her first appearance of the day. Itโ€™s been less than thirty seconds since she walked in, and Iโ€™m still trying and failing to take her in.

Sheโ€™sย stunning.

Sheโ€™s wearing a simple, fitted black sweater; slim, dark gray jeans; and a pair of flat, black, ankle-length boots. Her hair is both gone and not; itโ€™s like a soft, dark crown that suits her in a way I never couldโ€™ve expected. Without the distraction of her long hair my eyes have nowhere to focus but directly on her face. And she has the most incredible faceโ€”large, captivating eyesโ€”and a bone structure thatโ€™s never been more pronounced.

She looks shockingly different. Raw.

Still beautiful, but sharper. Harder. Sheโ€™s not a girl with a ponytail in a pink sweater anymore, no. She looks a great deal more like the young woman who murdered my father and then drank four fingers of his most expensive Scotch.

Sheโ€™s looking from me to the stunned expressions of Kenji and Castle to the quietly confused faces of our three new guests, and all of us appear unable to speak.

โ€œGood morning,โ€ she finally says, but she doesnโ€™t smile when she says it. Thereโ€™s no warmth, no kindness in her eyes as she looks around, and I falter.

โ€œDamn, princess, is that really you?โ€

Juliette appraises Kenji once, swiftly, but doesnโ€™t respond.

โ€œWho are you three?โ€ she says, nodding at the newcomers. They stand slowly. Uncertainly.

โ€œThese are our new guests,โ€ I say, but now I canโ€™t bring myself to look at her. To face her. โ€œI was just about to introduce them to Castle and Kishimoโ€”โ€

โ€œAnd you werenโ€™t going to include me?โ€ says a new voice. โ€œIโ€™d like to meet the new supreme commander, too.โ€

I turn around to find Lena standing in the doorway, not three feet from Juliette, looking around the room like sheโ€™s never been so delighted in all her life. I feel my heart pick up, my mind racing. I still have no idea if Juliette knows who Lena isโ€”or what we were together.

And Lenaโ€™s eyes are bright, too bright, her smile wide and happy. A chill runs through me.

With them standing so close together, I canโ€™t help but notice that the differences between her and Juliette are almost too obvious. Where Juliette is petite, Lena is tall. Juliette has dark hair and deep eyes, while Lena is pale in every possible way. Her hair is almost white, her eyes are the lightest blue, her skin is almost translucent, save the many freckles spanning her nose and cheeks. But what she lacks in pigment she makes up for in presence; sheโ€™s always been loud, aggressive, passionate to a fault. Juliette, by comparison, is muted almost to an extreme this morning. She betrays no emotion, not a hint of anger or jealousy. She stands still and quiet, silently studying the situation. Her energy is tightly coiled. Ready to spring.

And when Lena turns to face her, I feel everyone in the room stiffen. โ€œHi,โ€ Lena says loudly. False happiness disfigures her smile, morphing it

into something cruel. She holds out her hand as she says, โ€œItโ€™s nice to finally meet Warnerโ€™s girlfriend.โ€ And then: โ€œOh, waitโ€”Iโ€™m sorry. I meantย ex– girlfriend.โ€

Iโ€™m holding my breath as Juliette looks her up and down.

She takes her time, tilting her head as she devours Lena with her eyes and I can see Lenaโ€™s offered hand beginning to tire, her open fingers starting to shake.

Juliette seems unimpressed.

โ€œYou can call me the supreme commander of North America,โ€ she says. And then walks away.

I feel an almost hysterical laughter build in my chest; I have to look down, force myself to keep a straight face. And then Iโ€™m sobered, all at once, by the realization that Juliette is no longer mine. Sheโ€™s no longer mine to love, mine to adore. Iโ€™ve never been more attracted to her in all the time Iโ€™ve known her and thereโ€™s nothing, nothing to be done about it. My heart pounds faster as she steps more completely into the roomโ€”a gaping Lena left in her wakeโ€”and Iโ€™m struck still with regret.

I canโ€™t believe Iโ€™ve managed to lose her. Twice. That she loved me. Once.

โ€œPlease identify yourselves,โ€ she says to our three guests. Stephan speaks first.

โ€œIโ€™m Stephan Feruzi Omondi,โ€ he says, reaching forward to shake her hand. โ€œIโ€™m here to represent the supreme commander of Africa.โ€

Stephan is tall and dignified and deeply formal, and though he was born

and raised in what used to be Nairobi, he studied English abroad, and speaks now with a British accent. And I can tell from the way Julietteโ€™s eyes linger on his face that she likes the look of him.

Something tightens in my chest.

โ€œYour parents sent you to spy on me, too, Stephan?โ€ she says, still staring.

Stephan smilesโ€”the movement animating his whole faceโ€”and suddenly I hate him. โ€œWeโ€™re only here to say hello,โ€ he says. โ€œJust a little friendly union.โ€

โ€œUh-huh. And you two?โ€ She turns to the twins. โ€œSame thing?โ€ Nicolรกs, the elder twin, only smiles at her. He seems delighted. โ€œI am

Nicolรกs Castillo,โ€ he says, โ€œson of Santiago and Martina Castillo, and this is my sister, Valentinaโ€”โ€

โ€œSister?โ€ Lena cuts in. Sheโ€™s found another opportunity to be cruel and Iโ€™ve never hated her so much. โ€œAre you still doing that?โ€

โ€œLena,โ€ I say, a warning in my voice.

โ€œWhat?โ€ She looks at me. โ€œWhy does everyone keep acting like this is normal? One day Santiagoโ€™s son decides he wants to be a girl and we all just, what? Look the other way?โ€

โ€œEat shit, Lena,โ€ is the first thing Valentina has said all morning. โ€œI shouldโ€™ve cut off your ears when I had the chance.โ€

Julietteโ€™s eyes go wide.

โ€œUh, Iโ€™m sorryโ€โ€”Kenji pokes his head forward, waves a handโ€”โ€œam I missing something?โ€

โ€œValentina likes to play pretend,โ€ Lena says. โ€œCรกllate la boca,ย cabrona,โ€ Nicolรกs snaps at her.

โ€œNo, you know what?โ€ Valentina says, placing a hand on her brotherโ€™s shoulder. โ€œItโ€™s okay. Let her talk. Lena thinks I like to pretend,ย peroย I wonโ€™t be pretendingย cuando cuelge su cuerpo muerto en mi cuarto.โ€

Lena only rolls her eyes.

โ€œValentina,โ€ I say. โ€œPlease ignore her.ย Ella no tiene ninguna idea de lo que estรก hablando.ย Tenemos mucho que hacer y no debemoโ€”โ€

โ€œDamn, bro,โ€ Kenji cuts me off. โ€œYou speak Spanish, too, huh?โ€ He runs a hand through his hair. โ€œIโ€™m going to have to get used to this.โ€

โ€œWe all speak many languages,โ€ says Nicolรกs, a note of irritation still clinging to his voice. โ€œWe have to be able to communiโ€”โ€

โ€œListen, guys, I donโ€™t care about your personal dramas,โ€ Juliette says suddenly, pinching the bridge of her nose. โ€œI have a massive headache and a million things to do today, and Iโ€™d like to get started.โ€

โ€œPor su puesto, seรฑorita.โ€ Nicolรกs bows his head a little.

โ€œWhat?โ€ she says, blinking at him. โ€œI donโ€™t know what that means.โ€ Nicolรกs only smiles. โ€œEntonces deberรญas aprender como hablar espaรฑol.โ€ I almost laugh, even as I shake my head. Nicolรกs is being difficult on

purpose. โ€œBasta ya,โ€ I say to him. โ€œDejala sola. Sabes que ella no habla espaรฑol.โ€

โ€œWhat are you guys saying?โ€ Juliette demands.

Nicolรกs only smiles wider, his blue eyes crinkling in delight. โ€œNothing of consequence, Madam Supreme. Only that we are pleased to meet you.โ€

โ€œAnd I take it youโ€™ll all be attending the symposium today?โ€ she says. Another slight bow. โ€œClaro que sรญ.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s a yes,โ€ I say to her.

โ€œWhat other languages do you speak?โ€ Juliette says, spinning to face me, and Iโ€™m so surprised sheโ€™s addressing me in public that I forget to respond.

Itโ€™s Stephan who says, โ€œWe were taught many languages from a very young age. It was critical that the commanders and their families all knew how to communicate with one another.โ€

โ€œBut I thought The Reestablishment wanted to get rid of all the languages,โ€ she says. โ€œI thought you were working toward a single, universal languageโ€”โ€

โ€œSรญ, Madam Supreme,โ€ says Valentina with a slight nod. โ€œThatโ€™s true. But first we had to be able to speak with each other, no?โ€

Juliette looks fascinated. Sheโ€™s forgotten her anger for just long enough to be awed by the vastness of the world again; I can see it in her eyes. Her desire to escape. โ€œWhere are you from?โ€ she asks, the question full of innocence; wonder. Something about it breaks my heart. โ€œBefore the world was remappedโ€”what were the names of your countries?โ€

โ€œWe were born in Argentina,โ€ Nicolรกs and Valentina say at the same time. โ€œMy family is from Kenya,โ€ says Stephan.

โ€œAnd youโ€™ve visited each other?โ€ she says, turning to scan our faces. โ€œYou travel to each otherโ€™s continents?โ€

We nod.

โ€œWow,โ€ she says quietly, but mostly to herself. โ€œThat must be incredible.โ€ โ€œYou must come visit us, too, Madam Supreme,โ€ says a smiling Stephan.

โ€œWeโ€™d love to have you stay with us. After all, you are one of us now.โ€

Julietteโ€™s smile vanishes. Gone too soon is the wistful, faraway look on her face. She says nothing, but I can sense the anger and sadness boiling over inside her.

Too suddenly, she says, โ€œWarner, Castle, Kenji?โ€ โ€œYeah?โ€

โ€œYes, Ms Ferrars?โ€ I merely stare.

โ€œIf weโ€™re done here, Iโ€™d like to speak with the three of you alone, please.โ€
