Chapter no 11 – JULIETTE

Restore Me (Shatter Me Book 4)

โ€œStop squirming, J.โ€

Weโ€™re in the glass elevator, making our way down to one of the main reception areas, and I canโ€™t stop fidgeting.

My eyes are squeezed shut. I keep saying, โ€œOh my God, I am totally clueless, arenโ€™t I? What am I doing? I donโ€™t look professional at allโ€”โ€

โ€œYou know what? Who cares what youโ€™re wearing?โ€ Kenji says. โ€œItโ€™s all in the attitude, anyway. Itโ€™s about how you carry yourself.โ€

I look up at him, feeling the height difference between us more acutely than ever. โ€œBut Iโ€™m so short.โ€

โ€œNapoleon was short, too.โ€ โ€œNapoleon was horrible,โ€ I point out. โ€œNapoleon got shit done, didnโ€™t he?โ€ I frown.

Kenji nudges me with his elbow. โ€œYou might want to spit the gum out, though.โ€

โ€œKenji,โ€ I say, only half hearing him, โ€œIโ€™ve just realized Iโ€™ve never met any foreign officials before.โ€

โ€œI know, right? Me neither,โ€ he says, mussing my hair. โ€œBut itโ€™ll be okay.

You just need to calm down. Anyway, you look cute. Youโ€™ll do great.โ€

I slap his hand away. โ€œI may not know much about being a supreme commander yet, but I do know that Iโ€™m not supposed to be cute.โ€

Just then, the elevator dings open.

โ€œWho says you canโ€™t be cute and kick ass at the same time?โ€ Kenji winks at me. โ€œI do it every day.โ€

โ€œOh, manโ€”you know what? Never mind,โ€ is the first thing Kenji says to me.

Heโ€™s cringing, shooting me a sidelong glance as he says, โ€œMaybe you really

should work on your wardrobe?โ€ I might die of embarrassment.

Whoever this guy is, whatever his intentions are, Haider Ibrahim is dressed unlike anyone Iโ€™ve ever seen before. He looks like no one Iโ€™ve ever seen before.

He stands up as we enter the roomโ€”tall, very tallโ€”and Iโ€™m instantly struck by the sight of him. Heโ€™s wearing a dark gray leather jacket over what I can only assume is meant to be a shirt, but is actually a series of tightly woven chains strung across his body. His skin is heavily tanned and half exposed, his upper body only barely concealed by his chain-link shirt. His closely tapered

black pants disappear into shin-high combat boots, and his light brown eyesโ€” a startling contrast to his brown skinโ€”are rimmed in a flutter of thick black lashes.

I tug at my pink sweater and nervously swallow my gum.

โ€œHi,โ€ I say, and begin to wave, but Kenji is kind enough to push down my hand. I clear my throat. โ€œIโ€™m Juliette.โ€

Haider steps forward cautiously, his eyes drawn together in what looks like confusion as he appraises my appearance. I feel uncomfortably self- conscious. Wildly underprepared. And I suddenly really need to use the bathroom.

โ€œHello,โ€ he finally says, but it sounds more like a question. โ€œCan we help you?โ€ I say.

โ€œTehcheen Arabi?โ€

โ€œOh.โ€ I glance at Kenji, then at Haider. โ€œUm, you donโ€™t speak English?โ€ Haider raises a single eyebrow. โ€œDo you only speak English?โ€

โ€œYes?โ€ I say, feeling now more nervous than ever.

โ€œThatโ€™s too bad.โ€ He sighs. Looks around. โ€œIโ€™m here to see the supreme commander.โ€ He has a rich, deep voice but speaks with a slight accent.

โ€œYep, hi, thatโ€™s me,โ€ I say, and smile.

His eyes widen with ill-concealed confusion. โ€œYou areโ€โ€”he frownsโ€”โ€œthe supreme?โ€

โ€œMm-hm.โ€ I paste on a brighter smile. Diplomacy, I tell myself.

Diplomacy.

โ€œBut we were told that the new supreme was wild, lethalโ€”terrifyingโ€”โ€ I nod. Feel my face warm. โ€œYes. Thatโ€™s me. Iโ€™m Juliette Ferrars.โ€ Haider tilts his head, his eyes scanning my body. โ€œBut youโ€™re so small.โ€

And Iโ€™m still trying to figure out how to respond to that when he shakes his head and says, โ€œI apologize, I meant to sayโ€”that you are so young. But then, also, very small.โ€

My smile is beginning to hurt.

โ€œSo it was you,โ€ he says, still confused, โ€œwho killed Supreme Anderson?โ€ I nod. Shrug.

โ€œButโ€”โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry,โ€ Kenji interjects. โ€œDid you have a reason for being here?โ€

Haider looks taken aback by the question. He glances at Kenji. โ€œWho is this?โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s my second-in-command,โ€ I say. โ€œAnd you should feel free to respond to him when he speaks to you.โ€

โ€œOh, I see,โ€ Haider says, understanding in his eyes. He nods at Kenji. โ€œA member of your Supreme Guard.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t have a Suprโ€”โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s right,โ€ Kenji says, throwing a swift shut up elbow in my ribs.

โ€œYouโ€™ll have to forgive me for being a little overprotective.โ€ He smiles. โ€œIโ€™m sure you know how it is.โ€

โ€œYes, of course,โ€ Haider says, looking sympathetic.

โ€œShould we all sit down?โ€ I say, gesturing to the couches across the room.

Weโ€™re still standing in the entryway and itโ€™s starting to get awkward. โ€œCertainly.โ€ Haider offers me his arm in anticipation of the fifteen-foot

journey to the couches, and I shoot Kenji a quick look of confusion.

He shrugs.

The three of us settle into our seats; Kenji and I sit across from Haider.

Thereโ€™s a long, wooden coffee table between us, and Kenji presses the slim button underneath to call for a tea and coffee service.

Haider wonโ€™t stop staring at me. His gaze is neither flattering nor threateningโ€”he looks genuinely confusedโ€”and Iโ€™m surprised to find that itโ€™s this reaction I find most unsettling. If his eyes were angry or objectifying, I might better know how to react. Instead, he seems mild and pleasant, butโ€” surprised. And Iโ€™m not sure what to do with it. Kenji was rightโ€”I wish more than ever that Warner were here; his ability to sense emotions would give me a clearer idea of how to respond.

I finally break the silence between us.

โ€œItโ€™s really very nice to meet you,โ€ I say, hoping I sound kinder than I feel, โ€œbut Iโ€™d love to know what brings you here. Youโ€™ve come such a long way.โ€

Haider smiles then. The action adds a necessary warmth to his face that makes him look younger than he first appeared. โ€œCuriosity,โ€ he says simply.

I do my best to mask my anxiety.

Itโ€™s becoming more obvious by the moment that he was sent here to do some kind of reconnaissance for his father. Castleโ€™s theory was rightโ€”the supreme commanders must be dying to know who I am. And Iโ€™m beginning to wonder if this is only the first of several visits Iโ€™ll soon receive from prying eyes.

Just then, the tea and coffee service arrives.

The ladies and gentlemen who work in Sector 45โ€”here, and in the compoundsโ€”are peppier than ever these days. Thereโ€™s an infusion of hope in our sector that doesnโ€™t exist anywhere else on the continent, and the two older ladies who hurry into our room with the food cart are no exception to the effects of recent events. They flash big, bright smiles in my direction, and arrange the china with an exuberance that does not go unnoticed. I see Haider watching our interaction closely, examining the ladiesโ€™ faces and the comfortable way in which they move in my presence. I thank them for their work and Haider is visibly stunned. Eyebrows raised, he sits back in his seat, hands clasped in his lap like the perfect gentleman, silent as salt until the moment they leave.

โ€œI will impose upon your kindness for a few weeks,โ€ Haider says suddenly.

โ€œThat isโ€”if thatโ€™s all right.โ€

I frown, begin to protest, and Kenji cuts me off.

โ€œOf course,โ€ he says, smiling wide. โ€œStay as long as you like. The son of a supreme commander is always welcome here.โ€

โ€œYou are very kind,โ€ he says with a simple bow of his head. And then he hesitates, touches something at his wrist, and our room is swarmed in an instant by what appear to be members of his personal staff.

Haider stands up so swiftly I almost miss it. Kenji and I hurry to our feet.

โ€œIt was a pleasure meeting you, Supreme Commander Ferrars,โ€ Haider says, stepping forward to reach for my hand, and Iโ€™m surprised by his boldness. Despite the many rumors I know heโ€™s heard about me, he doesnโ€™t seem to mind being near my skin. Not that it really matters, of courseโ€”Iโ€™ve now learned how to turn my powers on and off at willโ€”but not everyone knows that yet.

Either way, he presses a brief kiss to the back of my hand, smiles, and bows his head very slightly.

I manage an awkward smile and a small nod.

โ€œIf you tell me how many people are in your party,โ€ Kenji says, โ€œI can begin to arrange accommodations for yโ€”โ€

Haider laughs out loud, surprised. โ€œOh, that wonโ€™t be necessary,โ€ he says. โ€œIโ€™ve brought my own residence.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ve broughtโ€โ€”Kenji frownsโ€”โ€œyou brought your own residence?โ€

Haider nods without looking at Kenji. When he next speaks he speaks only to me. โ€œI look forward to seeing you and the rest of your guard at dinner tonight.โ€

โ€œDinner,โ€ I say, blinking fast. โ€œTonight?โ€

โ€œOf course,โ€ Kenji says swiftly. โ€œWe look forward to it.โ€

Haider nods. โ€œPlease send my warmest regards to your Regent Warner. Itโ€™s been several months since our last visit, but I look forward to catching up with him. He has mentioned me, of course?โ€ A bright smile. โ€œWeโ€™ve known each other since our infancy.โ€

Stunned, I nod slowly, realization overcoming my confusion. โ€œYes. Right.

Of course. Iโ€™m sure heโ€™ll be thrilled to see you again.โ€ Another nod, and Haiderโ€™s gone.

Kenji and I are alone. โ€œWhat the fโ€”โ€

โ€œOhโ€โ€”Haider pops his head back in the roomโ€”โ€œand please tell your chef that I do not eat meat.โ€

โ€œFor sure,โ€ Kenji says, nodding and smiling. โ€œYep. You got it.โ€
