โMr Warnerโplease, Mr Warner, slow down, sonโโ
I stop too suddenly, pivoting sharply on my heel. Castle is chasing me down the hall, waving a frantic hand in my direction. I meet his eyes with a mild expression.
โCan I help you?โ
โWhere have you been?โ he says, obviously out of breath. โIโve been looking for you everywhere.โ
I raise an eyebrow, fighting back the urge to tell him that my whereabouts are none of his business. โI had a few aerial rounds to make.โ
Castle frowns. โDonโt you usually do that later in the afternoon?โ At this, I almost smile. โYouโve been watching me.โ
โLetโs not play games. Youโve been watching me, too.โ Now I actually smile. โHave I?โ
โYou think so little of my intelligence.โ
โI donโt know what to think of you, Castle.โ
He laughs out loud. โGoodness, youโre an excellent liar.โ I look away. โWhat do you need?โ
โHeโs here. Heโs here right now and sheโs with him and I tried to stop her but she wouldnโt listen to meโโ
I turn back, alarmed. โWhoโs here?โ
For the first time, I see actual anger flicker in Castleโs eyes. โNow is not the time to play dumb with me, son. Haider Ibrahim is here. Right now. And Juliette is meeting with him alone, completely unprepared.โ
Shock renders me, for a moment, speechless.
โDid you hear what I said?โ Castle is nearly shouting. โSheโs meeting with himย now.โ
โHow?โ I say, coming back to myself. โHow is he here already? Did he arrive alone?โ
โMr Warner, please listen to me. You have to talk to her. You have to explain and you have to do it now,โ he says, grabbing my shoulders. โTheyโre coming back for hโโ
Castle is thrown backward, hard.
He cries out as he catches himself, his arms and legs splayed out in front of him as if caught in a gust of wind. He remains in that impossible position, hovering several inches off the ground, and stares at me, chest heaving.
Slowly, he steadies. His feet finally touch the floor.
โYou would use my own powers against me?โ he says, breathing hard. โI am yourย allyโโ
โNever,โ I say sharply, โever put your hands on me, Castle. Or next time I might accidentally kill you.โ
Castle blinks. And then I feel itโI can sense it, close my fingers around it: his pity. Itโs everywhere. Awful. Suffocating.
โDonโt you dare feel sorry for me,โ I say.
โMy apologies,โ he says quietly. โI didnโt mean to invade your personal space. But you must understand the urgency here. First, the RSVPโand now, Haiderโs arrival? This is just the beginning,โ he says, lowering his voice. โThey are mobilizing.โ
โYou are overthinking this,โ I say, my voice clipped. โHaiderโs arrival today is aboutย me. Sector 45โs inevitable infestation by a swarm of supreme commanders is aboutย me. Iโve committed treason, remember?โ I shake my head, begin walking away. โTheyโre just a little . . . angry.โ
โStop,โ he says. โListen to meโโ
โYou donโt need to concern yourself with this, Castle. Iโll handle it.โ โWhy arenโt you listening to me?โ Heโs chasing after me now. โTheyโre
coming to take her back, son! We canโt let that happen!โ I freeze.
I turn to face him. My movements are slow, deliberate. โWhat are you talking about? Take her back where?โ
Castle doesnโt respond. Instead, his face goes slack. He stares, confused, in my direction.
โI have a thousand things to do,โ I say, impatient now, โso if you would please make this quick and tell me what on earth youโre talking aboutโโ
โHe never told you, did he?โ โWho? Told me what?โ
โYour father,โ he says. โHe never told you.โ Castle runs a hand down the length of his face. He looks abruptly ancient, about to expire. โMy God. He never told you.โ
โWhat do you mean? What did he never tell me?โ โThe truth,โ he says. โAbout Ms Ferrars.โ
I stare at him, my chest constricting in fear.
Castle shakes his head as he says, โHe never told you where she really came from, did he? He never told you the truth about her parents.โ
