โNO,โ CAOIMHE ARGUED. โNO WAY. IโM NOT MOVING SCHOOLS AGAIN.โ
โCaoimhe, love, weโve talked about this. Please try to understand.โ
โIโm not fucking moving again,โ she screamed. โI have friends at St. Josephโs, and you promised I could go back to my old school when we came home.โ She shook her head and backed toward the door. โYou promised, Mam!โ
โWe tried, Caoimhe,โ Mammy told her, looking sad. โBut the principal said itโs not possible to re-enroll you. They donโt have the space, love.โ
โItโs not fair,โ my sister cried, sobbing loudly. โMy life is fucking over!โ
โDonโt say that,โ Mammy said, trying to coax. โYouโll be just as happy over at St. Theresaโs.โ
โBut itโs an all-girls school,โ Caoimhe cried. โRun by the nuns.โ
โItโs only for a year and a half, and then youโll go off to secondary school and meet up with all your old friends.โ
โI fucking hate you!โ Caoimhe cried. I was still sitting on the step when she barged past me. โGet out of the way,โ she screamed, shoving me with her foot. โYouโre always in the fucking way, Lizzie!โ
โCaoimhe!โ Mam shouted, following after her. โDonโt you dare take it out on your sister!โ
I wanted to tell her I was sorry, but I couldnโt get the words out.
โItโs not your fault, Lizzie.โ Mammy smiled and crouched down in front of me. โYou havenโt done anything.โ
I reached up and cupped her cheek in my small hand.
Sniffling, she closed her eyes and covered my hand with hers. โIโm not crying, sweetheart,โ she said, answering the question in my head.
She was.
I could feel the wet on my hand.
โBe a good girl and go on up to bed now.โ When she opened her eyes, she was smiling a big smile. โAnd remember that Mammy loves you very much.โ
I love you, too, Mammy.
