DECEMBER 31, 1994
โARE YOU OKAY?โ Iย ASKEDย GIBSIE, EVEN THOUGHย Iย ALREADY KNEW THE ANSWER.
It was New Yearโs Eve, and we were sitting at my kitchen table, while his mother and Keith sipped champagne with my parents.
โYeah, Iโll be okay,โ Gibsie replied, sounding sad. โThanks for inviting me to your party, Liz.โ
It was my parentsโ party, not mine. Theyโd decided to throw a party this New Yearโs Eve to thank their friends for all their support during the year.
Mam was out of bed and dressed up in a beautiful dress, and Dad looked actually happy tonight. The kitchen was filled with grown-ups whose names I didnโt know, while Caoimhe and Mark had the living room jam-packed with friends from school.
Reaching over, I placed my hand on Gibsieโs and whispered, โKeithโs a fucker.โ
That made him smile, so I racked my brain for more curse words. โKeithโs a stupid, son-of-a-bitch, fucker pup.โ
Now, he full belly laughed. โHeย isย a fucker pup.โ
I grinned. โYep.โ
When the doorbell sounded, Gibs and I both looked at each other before making a run for the front door.
โHeโs here,โ I squealed at the same time Gibs cheered, โSheโs here!โ
Butting Gibsie out of the way with my hip, I grabbed the door handle a second before him and grinned in victory. Call it silly, but I wanted to be the one to open the door when Hugh came to my house. I wanted to be the first person to see his face. In fact, I wanted to see his face all the time. Every day.
When I yanked the door open and was greeted by the Biggs family, I had to force myself to not throw myself at Hugh.
I wanted to.
So bad.
Because I thought about himย allย the time. My face felt hot when he smiled at me, and I wanted to spend all my time being near him. Even when I was supposed to be playing with Claire, I always searched for him and secretly hoped that he would come into the room and join us. I loved the things he talked about. He was so smart and was always teaching me things. About stars and constellations, about nature, books, movies, music. He was like my own personal encyclopedia on life itself.
โGerard!โ Claire squealed, rushing past me to throw her arms around our friend. โYou look super nice in your shirt.โ
โThanks, Claire-Bear,โ he chuckled, looking more relaxed than he had all night now that she was here. โYou look like a princess.โ Draping an arm over her shoulders, they followed her parents into the kitchen, while I remained rooted to the spot, attention riveted on the only boy I ever wanted to look at.
He was wearing a red plaid shirt that was tucked into dark jeans, with brown boots. His hair was neatly combed, but it still flopped forward like Junior from the movieย Little Giants.
Hugh grinned at me. โHi.โ
I beamed back at him. โHi.โ
โThanks for the invitation.โ He held up the familiar card and winked. โNiceย g.โ
My face flushed with heat. โIโve been practicing.โ
โI can tell.โ Smiling, he stepped inside, and his arm brushed against mine as he moved, making the flutter-cups go crazy.
Unable to stop myself, I leaned in close and took a whiff. Just like I remembered: freshly cut grass, soap, strawberries, and Hugh.
โDid you just smell me again?โ he asked with a small laugh.
โI like how you smell.โ
โI took a bath this evening.โ Raising his arm to his nose, he took a whiff of his armpit and shrugged. โItโs the same soap as always.โ
โDoes your mam put bubbles in?โ
โYep.โ
โI like bubbles.โ
โSame.โ
โI donโt like baths anymore.โ
โWhy not?โ
โTheyโre stingy.โ
He frowned. โStingy?โ
I nodded. โYep.โ
Confusion filled his eyes. โI donโt get stung.โ
I shrugged. โMaybe itโs just my bath.โ
โMaybe.โ His gaze drifted over me, and I felt my body warm up. โYou look really nice.โ Smiling, he flicked the bow on my hair and teased, โVery un-Lizzie of you.โ
โMy sister made me wear it.โ Blushing, I closed the door behind him. โThanks for coming.โ
โYour house is huge,โ he told me. โLike seriously huge.โ
โYeah.โ Standing in the hallway, I clasped my hands together and stared at him. โItโs really old.โ
โYeah, it looks it.โ He seemed interested in the walls of our entryway. โItโs really cool.โ
โReally?โ
โYeah.โ His eyes met mine for a moment and my face grew hot again. โMy dadโs an architect, so I sort of love these kinds of places.โ He turned around slowly, eyes focused on the carvings in the ceiling. โGeorgian?โ
โUh, my dadโs name is Michael,โ I corrected. โAnd heโs in the kitchen.โ
Hugh frowned at me for a brief moment before a huge smile spread across his face. โYou are so cute.โ
My eyes widened. โIโm cute?โ
His lips twitched but he didnโt answer, deciding to change the subject by asking, โSo, how about it, milady? Fancy giving your brave knight a tour of the palace?โ
โYouโre so weird.โ Snickering, I grabbed his hand and pulled him toward the staircase. โLetโs go.โ
โHey, did you know that your motherโs great-great-great-great-great-grandfather fought in the Siege of Cork in 1690?โ
โThatโs a lot of greats, Hugh.โ Sprawled out on my bedroom floor, I rested my chin in my hands, while I watched Hugh comb through a book heโd found in the library room.
โAnd your family is one of the few Catholic-Irish families to retain their land and wealth during the plantation?โ
โDid he die?โ
โWho?โ
โMy great-great-great-great-great-grandfather.โ
โNope, but it says here that he lost a leg.โ Carefully turning the dusty page, he continued to read. โLiz, your mam is wealthy.โ He leaned in closer to read the handwritten diary entries. โAnd not just regular wealthy.โ He turned his head to look at me. โShe hasย generationalย wealth.โ
I shrugged. โI donโt know what any of that means.โ
โIt means her childrenโs children wonโt ever have to worry about money.โ He frowned before chuckling to himself. โI guess that means your kids.โ
โBut I donโt have any kids?โ
โNot now, but when youโre a grown-up, youโll have a bunchโ he explained, returning his attention to the book. โAnd theyโll be filthy rich.โ
โOh.โ I thought about it for a moment, decided I didnโt care, and went right back to staring at him. โI think I like being around you more than your sister,โ I admitted. โDoes that make me a bad friend?โ
โNah,โ Hugh replied, turning his head to look at me again. โI get it.โ
โYou do?โ
โYep.โ Nodding, he closed the book and rested his chin on his hand. โYou like the peace and quiet, and my sister is the opposite of quiet.โ
My eyes widened in surprise. โIย doย like the quiet.โ
โMe, too,โ he agreed. โBesides, youโre the baby of your family, arenโt you? And Caoimheโs way older than you.โ
โYep.โ
โSo quiet is what youโre used to,โ he continued to explain. โIโm the oldest of the four of us, so Iโm used to the noise, but I donโt like it.โ
My brows furrowed in confusion. โBut thereโs only two of you.โ
โGibsieโs basically the middle child, and Bethโs the baby.โ Lips twitching into a small smile, he added, โHeโs practically my brother.โ
โSo you guys sort of adopted him?โ I grinned. โLike Master Splinter did with the turtles.โ
His brown-eyed gaze flicked to me and his smirk deepened. โPretty much.โ
Heย was pretty. So pretty. โHey, Hugh?โ
โHm?โ
โI like you.โ
โI like you, too, Liz,โ he replied, pulling himself into a sitting position. โI wish you were in my class at school andย notย my sisterโs.โ
Mirroring his actions, I sat cross-legged, facing him, and smiled. โI want to be with you all the time.โ
โYeah.โ His cheeks reddened when he nodded. โI want that, too.โ
โHey, Hugh?โ
โYeah, Liz?โ
โYou know the way Gibsie is going to ask Claire to marry him when theyโre grown-up?โ I shifted closer until our knees were touching. โDo you think you might ask me to marry you?โ
Hugh stared at me for a long time before saying, โIf I asked you, would you say yes?โ
โYes.โ I nodded eagerly. โI would definitely say yes.โ
He smiled. โThatโs good to know.โ
โHey, Hugh?โ
โYeah, Liz.โ
I pointed to the watch on his wrist. โHappy New Year.โ
Hugh stared down at the face of his watch for a long moment before turning his attention back to me. And then, with red cheeks, he leaned in close and kissed my cheek. โHappy New Year, Liz.โ
