Chapter 29

Releasing 10 (Boys of Tommen, #6)

DECEMBER 3, 1994

BUBBLING WITH EXCITEMENT, Iย HELD MY MOTHERโ€™S HAND ALL THE WAY FROM THEย changing room to the pool. Mam was still feeling sick and couldnโ€™t go in the water, but sheย stillย came when Sinead Biggs invited us today. She said it was a special treat for all of us.

I couldnโ€™t wait to get in the swimming pool, and I could see my friends splashing in the water. But I was trying really hard to be a good girl and not make a mistake because Daddy was here, too, and if I was bad, I wouldnโ€™t get to come to the pool again.

I had to behave myself.

No mistakes.

โ€œCatherine?โ€ Sinead asked, rising from a deck chair at the side of the pool when I approached with my mother. โ€œIโ€™m Sinead Biggs. Itโ€™s lovely to finally meet you.โ€

โ€œLikewise,โ€ Mam replied, shaking her hand. โ€œThank you so much for being so good to Lizzie. Iโ€™m forever in your debt.โ€

โ€œNot at all,โ€ Sinead replied, helping Mammy onto a chair next to hers. โ€œLizzie is a pleasure. Sheโ€™s welcome at our home anytime.โ€

โ€œMy son takes the open-door policy in the literal sense,โ€ another woman chuckled from a nearby deck chair. โ€œI swear Sinead sees more of Gerard than I do.โ€ Leaning over the seats, she extended her hand to my mother. โ€œSadhbh Gibson. Youโ€™reย Caoimheโ€™s mother, arenโ€™t you? Sheโ€™s a credit to you, Catherine. Truly.โ€

โ€œThank you so much.โ€ Mam smiled and shook her hand. โ€œAnd itโ€™s wonderful to finally meet you ladies.โ€

The three of them started chatting, and I smiled, feeling happy for my mother. It was nice to see her smiling again. Sadhbh and Sinead didnโ€™t stare at her headscarf or give her sad looks. They treated my mother like she was a part of their gang.

Just like how their kids treated me.

โ€œYouโ€™re here,โ€ I heard Hugh call out moments before his hand snaked around my ankle. He grinned up at me from the water. โ€œWhat are you waiting for?โ€

Looking around, I searched for my father, and when I couldnโ€™t find him, I backed right up before running and jumping into the water.

โ€œAre you crazy?โ€ Hugh laughed, watching me paddle toward him. โ€œYou canโ€™t jump in the deep end yet. Youโ€™re too small.โ€

โ€œIf you can do it, I can do it.โ€

He grinned back at me. โ€œThen why are you sinking?โ€

I narrowed my eyes. โ€œBecause Iโ€™ve never not touched the bottom before.โ€

Chuckling, he swam over to me. โ€œHold on to me.โ€

I quickly did just that and let him steer us to the edge of the pool. โ€œHere. Use my hand to push up,โ€ he instructed, giving my foot a boost with his hand.

When I got out, I sat back down on the edge and smiled at him. โ€œI have a crush on you.โ€ At least, thatโ€™s what Caoimhe said it was. I didnโ€™t know what was happening until I explained all about the flutter-cups. She laughed and told me that I had my first crush.

His cheeks turned bright pink. โ€œYouโ€™re not supposed to say that, Liz.โ€

โ€œBut I do,โ€ I told him.

โ€œYeah, but.โ€ He looked around before saying, โ€œThe guys will laugh at us if they hear you say things like that.โ€

โ€œSo?โ€

โ€œSoโ€ฆโ€ He seemed to think about it for a moment before shaking his head. โ€œI donโ€™t know what comes after so.โ€

I grinned at him. โ€œDo you have a crush on me, too?โ€

โ€œJesus.โ€ Blushing, he dipped under the water, reappearing a few seconds later and a lot farther away.

โ€œWait!โ€ I called after him. โ€œYou didnโ€™t answer me.โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ he called over his shoulder as he swam back to our friends. โ€œMy answer is yes!โ€

I sprang to my feet and clutched my chest, unable to stop the grin on my face from spreading.

Because he had a crush on me, too.

Hugh Biggs liked me back.

โ€œCome back for me,โ€ I called out, jumping back into the water and kicking my legs.

I didnโ€™t feel the same fear others felt when their heads went underwater or when water went up their nose. The more pain I felt, the calmer my mind grew.

โ€œYou are a crazy girl,โ€ Hugh laughed, hooking an arm around me when he swam back to me. โ€œWhat would you have done if I didnโ€™t swim back for you?โ€

โ€œI knew you would,โ€ I laughed, wrapping my arms around his neck as he swam us over to the shallow part.

โ€œOh yeah?โ€ he teased, releasing me when I could stand. โ€œHow?โ€

โ€œBecause I trust you,โ€ I told him. โ€œYou make me feel safe.โ€

That seemed to confuse him because his brows furrowed together. โ€œYouโ€™ll always be safe with me.โ€

โ€œI know.โ€ I splashed him with my hand. โ€œNo matter what, right?โ€

โ€œYeah, Liz,โ€ Hugh chuckled, splashing me back. โ€œNo matter what.โ€
