Chapter 24

Releasing 10 (Boys of Tommen, #6)

OCTOBER 31, 1994

โ€œHUGH!โ€ ROBBIEย MAC, WHO WAS DRESSED AS THEย REDย POWERย RANGER, BARKED FROMย his perch at my kitchen table. He pointed to the two girls dressed in princess costumes sitting on either side of him and mouthed the wordsย do something.

My birthday party was in full swing, and my house was packed to the rafters with friends. Unfortunately for Robbie, Pierceโ€™s creepy twin sisters had taken a shining to him. I wasnโ€™t sure what he thought I could do about it. One thing I wasnโ€™t going to do was swap places with him. Iโ€™d already spent enough of my time with Claire hanging off my arm. I had no plans on volunteering myself for two more.

Pretending like I couldnโ€™t hear Robbie, I pushed past a group of lads battering a piรฑata and headed outside. I rolled my eyes when I passed Danny Callaghan from my class, who was dressed as the Blue Power Ranger, pointing and laughing at Robbie. โ€œLook, lads, Robbie has aย girlfriend.โ€

What an asshole.

Relieved when I found Peter Pan and Zorro in the driveway, I made a beeline for them.

โ€œWhat the hell are you doing?โ€ I demanded when I reached them and caught sight of the slobber dribbling down Peter Panโ€™s chin. โ€œWhat the fuck is in your mouth, Gibs?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆellyโ€ฆakesโ€ฆโ€ Gibs tried to slur around a mouthful of what I could only describe as goo.

โ€œHeโ€™s trying to break the world record,โ€ Zorro snickered.

โ€œForย what?โ€ I demanded, gaping at Feely. โ€œBeing an eejit?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆellyโ€ฆakesโ€ฆโ€ Gibs repeated, using his fingers to push the goo back into his mouth.

โ€œGibsie thinks he can break the world record of putting the most jelly snakes in his mouth,โ€ Feely explained through fits of laughter.

โ€œWhatโ€™s the record?โ€ I asked.

โ€œHe doesnโ€™t know.โ€

โ€œThen how can he break it?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆutherโ€ฆunโ€ฆโ€ Gibsie instructed, holding his palm out. โ€œโ€ฆutherโ€ฆunโ€ฆeelyโ€ฆโ€

โ€œNo clue, lad,โ€ Feely laughed, handing over another jelly snake to an expectant Gibs. โ€œBut itโ€™s keeping him quiet.โ€

โ€œHe might choke,โ€ I warned, eyeing him warily.

โ€œHe might,โ€ Feely agreed.

โ€œHow many has he got so far?โ€

โ€œNine.โ€

โ€œNine?โ€ My eyes widened in wonder. โ€œNo fucking way.โ€ I gaped at Gibsie. โ€œYouโ€™re eating them, arenโ€™t you?โ€ I narrowed my eyes in suspicion. โ€œYou canโ€™t fit nine jelly snakes in your mouth, you little liar.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆopeโ€ฆโ€ Gibs shook his head and gagged, causing more dribble to leak from his mouth. โ€œโ€ฆohโ€ฆuck!โ€

The moment he clutched his stomach and started to heave, Feely and I dove out of the way. It wasnโ€™t our first time dealing with his upchuck reflux.

โ€œOh my God.โ€ Howling with laughter, Feely clutched his side and pointed at our dopey friend who was purging his gob of jelly. โ€œHe looks like Mouth fromย The Goonies.โ€

Groaning in dismay, I clutched my stomach and took in the sight of Gibsieโ€™s latest misadventure sprayed all over my driveway. โ€œYou areย sick, Gerard Gibson.โ€

โ€œSee? I told you I didnโ€™t eat them,โ€ Gibs declared proudly when he was finished expelling his snakes. โ€œSee, Hugh?โ€ He pointed to each slobbery jelly on the concrete and counted. โ€œNine full-sized bad boys without a toothmark on them.โ€

โ€œCongratulations,โ€ I replied with a shudder. โ€œYou have the biggest mouth in Ballylaggin.โ€

The sound of a car horn honking caused all three of us to turn toward my motherโ€™s car as it pulled up on the footpath outside our house.

โ€œWell, itโ€™s about time!โ€ Gibsie declared with a dramatic sigh before proceeding to use Feelyโ€™s black cape to clean the dribble off his chin.

โ€œDammit, Gibs!โ€ Feely shoved him away before quickly peeling off his cape and throwing it at him. โ€œYouย areย sick.โ€

โ€œPeter Pan!โ€ My sisterโ€™s high-pitched scream of excitement pierced the air moments before she came barreling past both me and Feely.

Looking every inch the fairy in her Tinker Bell costume, Claire launched herself at the snake-stuffer himself. โ€œI missed you so much!โ€

When Gibsie straightened up to his full height, he took my sister with him, causing her feet to lift off the ground. โ€œI missed you more, Claire-Bear.โ€

โ€œHe was only gone to his dadโ€™s house for the weekend,โ€ I reminded her, feeling more uncomfortable with my sisterโ€™s interactions with my best friend by the day.

Before Joe moved out, theyโ€™d spent every spare waking hour of the day together, but now that Gibs had to split his time between Sadhbhโ€™s and Joeโ€™s, they were even more annoying.

Gibs wasย alwaysย looking at her, and on the rare occasion he wasnโ€™t, Claire was looking atย him.

Our mothers called it harmless puppy love, but I wasnโ€™t so sure about that.

I had a niggling feeling they would always look at each other like that.

I wasnโ€™t sure what to think about it.

โ€œI wouldnโ€™t touch him if I were you,โ€ Feely warned, keeping a wide berth of them both, while he readjusted his black sombrero. โ€œHe just puked nine jelly snakes.โ€

โ€œYou did?โ€ My sisterโ€™s eyes widened to saucers, and she looked up at my oldest friend like he hung the moon. โ€œThe most you did last time was seven!โ€

โ€œI told you Iโ€™m going to get in thatย Guinness World Records, Claire-Bear.โ€ Proud as a peacock, Gibs set her down on her feet and swiftly reached for her hand. โ€œCome on. Thereโ€™s a tray of brownies in the kitchen with our names on them.โ€

โ€œClaire, havenโ€™t you forgotten someone?โ€ Mam called out in a frazzled tone, but it was too late. My sister had already disappeared inside the house with Gibs in search of sugar.

โ€œAh, crap,โ€ Feely muttered under his breath. โ€œAnother one.โ€

Meanwhile, my heart started to thump violently in my chest.

Sheโ€™s here.

โ€œIโ€™m sorry about Claire, sweetheart.โ€ Rounding the car, Mam opened the back passenger door and smiled. โ€œShe doesnโ€™t have a spark of sense between her two ears.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s fine, Mrs. Biggs,โ€ a familiar voice replied. โ€œIโ€™m used to it.โ€

โ€œCall me Sinead,โ€ I heard my mother instruct. โ€œAnd my husbandโ€™s name is Pete. None of that Mr. and Mrs. Biggs talk, ya hear, love?โ€

โ€œJust keep backing up,โ€ Feely whisper-hissed, moving backward in the direction of the house. โ€œMaybe your mam wonโ€™t see us.โ€

โ€œYeah,โ€ I tossed back with a forced laugh but made no move to follow him. I had no intention of running away fromย thisย girl.

โ€œHugh? Oh good. Come here, love. You can bring Lizzie inside.โ€

Yes!

โ€œSorry, lad, youโ€™re on your own.โ€ Snickering, Feely bolted for the door. โ€œI have four sisters,โ€ he called over his shoulder. โ€œI suffer enough.โ€

โ€œHugh!โ€

โ€œYeah, Mam, Iโ€™m coming,โ€ I called back, feeling my palms sweat with every step I took toward the car.

I would never admit it to a soul, not even Gibs, but Iย wantedย to see Lizzie Young again. Iโ€™d thought about her a lot over the weekend and hoped she would come today. Now she was here, I felt nervous and sick and excited all at once.

โ€œAh, hereโ€™s my birthday boy,โ€ Mam said when I reached them. She wrapped an arm around my shoulders and pulled me to her side. โ€œI promise this one has much better manners than his sister.โ€

Usually, but right now, I didnโ€™t have a word left in my head to fulfill my motherโ€™s promise because all my words had flown clean out of my head, and all I could do was stand there and take in the sight of her.

Last week, on the school bus, when I told her my party was fancy dress, I could tell she wasnโ€™t a fan, but she was here right now, rocking the coolest costume Iโ€™d ever seen.

โ€œYouโ€™re Dr. Sattler,โ€ I finally found my voice and said, eyes raking over her costume with approval. โ€œFromย Jurassic Park.โ€

Unlike the other girls, who were dressed in princess costumes and fairy wings, this girl wore khaki shorts, brown hiking boots, a blue vest, and a pink button-up shirt tied in a knot at her waist. Attached to the brown belt around her waist was a plastic walkie-talkie and a yellow lanyard.

The fact that Lizzie showed up to my party in full costume made me feel special, but knowing that she was matching me? Well, I didnโ€™t know how to handle the way that made me feel.

โ€œHappy birthday, Hugh,โ€ she said, extending her hand to me. โ€œI mean, Dr. Grant.โ€

โ€œJesus.โ€ The word slipped out of my mouth without permission, and I shook my head, feeling off balance. โ€œI mean thank youโ€ฆโ€ I cleared my throat, trying to bury the sudden crack in my voice and took her small hand in mine. โ€œAnd, uh, hi.โ€

โ€œI best go inside and help your father deal with the horde,โ€ Mam interrupted, releasing her hold on me. โ€œHugh, be a good boy and look after Lizzie, will you?โ€ Grabbing several shopping bags off the bonnet of the car, she moved for the front door. โ€œThis is her first time at a birthday party, so donโ€™t leave her on her own, love.โ€

I arched a brow in surprise. โ€œIโ€™m your first birthday party?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re my first,โ€ she confirmed with a shy smile. โ€œI still have your invitation.โ€ Releasing my hand, she reached into the pocket of her shorts and retrieved the invitation I had written her. โ€œI like yourย g.โ€

โ€œMyย g?โ€

โ€œUh-huh.โ€ Nodding eagerly, she unfolded the invite and pointed to where I had signed my name. โ€œYou work hard on your handwriting.โ€

Iย didย work hard on my handwriting. In fact, I worked hard on everything when it came to school. Not because I had toโ€”learning came easily to meโ€”but because Iย wantedย to. English. History. Geography. Nature. Science. Irish. Religion. It didnโ€™t matter. I soaked it all in. Everything about the world fascinated me, and I read more books than anyone else in my class, but she couldnโ€™t know that. Soย howย did she know that?

โ€œYou donโ€™t have to stay with me, by the way,โ€ Lizzie added, tucking the invitation back into her pocket. โ€œI know your motherย asked you to, but you can go back to your friends if you want.โ€ She smiled again. โ€œIโ€™m not afraid to be on my own.โ€

โ€œNo.โ€ I shook my head, taking it all in. Taking all ofย herย in. โ€œI donโ€™t want to do that.โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ I confirmed. โ€œI want to stay.โ€

A slow blush crept across her cheeks. โ€œWith me?โ€

Nodding slowly, I kept my attention locked on the strange girl in front of me, while an even stranger pressure grew in my chest. โ€œYouโ€™re really tall,โ€ I noted, taking in how she came up to my nose in height. โ€œFor a girl.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s my legs.โ€ She raised one foot then, giving me no choice but to catch it midair. โ€œMy sister says I have giraffe legs.โ€

Her sister was right. โ€œAre you a fast runner?โ€

โ€œYep,โ€ she replied proudly. โ€œFastest in my class.โ€

โ€œThought so,โ€ I replied, setting her foot back down. โ€œYouโ€™re matching me.โ€

โ€œI know.โ€ Grinning, she reached up and tipped my hat. โ€œI thought you might like it.โ€

โ€œI do,โ€ I replied, feeling my face grow hot again.

โ€œDo you want your present?โ€

My brows shot up in surprise. โ€œYou got me a present?โ€

โ€œOf course.โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œBecause itโ€™s your birthday.โ€

โ€œBut you donโ€™t even know me.โ€

โ€œSo? You donโ€™t know me and you still invited me to your party.โ€ With that, she quickly whirled around and moved for my motherโ€™s car. โ€œI got you two presents,โ€ she explained before opening the car door and climbing inside. โ€œWell, I got you one, and I made you the other.โ€

Intrigued, I followed her to the car and watched as she rummaged around in the back seat. โ€œI donโ€™t have a brother, so Iโ€™m sorry if you hate it.โ€

โ€œI wonโ€™t hate it,โ€ I replied, taking the parcel from her hands. โ€œAnd thank you.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re welcome.โ€ She blew out a loud breath and smiled. โ€œThatโ€™s the one I bought.โ€

โ€œYou want me to open it now?โ€ I asked, feeling another flush of heat spread up my neck when her blue eyes locked on mine.

โ€œYep.โ€

โ€œOkay then.โ€ I shrugged. โ€œScoot over.โ€

She obliged and I climbed into the back seat beside her, parcel in hand.

โ€œYou really didnโ€™t have to,โ€ I paused to say, midway through unwrapping her gift. โ€œJust so you know.โ€

โ€œJust open it already.โ€ Pulling up onto her knees, she watched me with excitement dancing in her eyes. โ€œGo on.โ€

Doing as she asked, I ripped off the rest of the wrapping paper, only to gape in wonder at the computer game in my hands. โ€œMortal Kombat II.โ€ I shook my head in disbelief and clutched the box. โ€œThis gameย justย came out.โ€

โ€œYeah, well, Claire told me that you have a Sneeze,โ€ she hurried to explain, sounding unsure. โ€œShe said you play it all the time. I wasnโ€™t sure if you had this game.โ€

โ€œSNES.โ€

โ€œHm?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s called a SNES,โ€ I explained, retraining my attention on the girl sitting beside me. โ€œSuper Nes.โ€ When she continued to stare blankly at me, I clarified. โ€œSuper Nintendo Entertainment System. Itโ€™s a game console, and I do play it all the time.โ€

โ€œSo that game will work on your Sneeze?โ€ she asked, pointing to the game in my hands.

โ€œMy SNES,โ€ I corrected gently, still in shock. โ€œAnd it definitely will.โ€

โ€œSo you like it?โ€

โ€œI more than like it.โ€ In fact, Iโ€™d been hoping to use my birthday money to get it. โ€œThank you.โ€ I shook my head, feeling a mixture of confusion and gratitude. โ€œSeriously, thank you so much.โ€

Relief flashed in her eyes, and she beamed back at me. โ€œYouโ€™re welcome.โ€

โ€œThis is a really big gift,โ€ I said slowly, keeping my eyes on hers. โ€œYou know that, right? It costs aย lotย of money.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s just a game, Hugh,โ€ she replied. โ€œMy mam said it was fine.โ€

Jesus, her family must be loaded.

โ€œHere.โ€ Reaching behind her back, she retrieved a green envelope and thrust it onto my lap. โ€œI made this one.โ€

Setting the game aside so I wouldnโ€™t be distracted, I focused all my attention on the envelope with my name on it.

Careful not to tear the homemade card inside, I removed it slowly, dutifully ignoring the cloud of glitter that sprinkled all over my lap in the process.

I lived with Claire, after all. Glitter was a given.

โ€œThis is great,โ€ I told her, inspecting every inch of her work. It must have taken her hours. Every spare inch of card was filled with color and paint. โ€œYou have lovely handwriting.โ€ I smiled at the scragglyย gย in my name, where she had attempted cursive. โ€œYouโ€™re neat.โ€

โ€œNot as neat as you.โ€

โ€œWell, I practice a lot.โ€

โ€œI bet I practice more.โ€

โ€œAnd I read.โ€

โ€œI bet I read more.โ€

โ€œOh yeah?โ€ My lips twitched and I tried not to smile, but she was cute when she challenged me. โ€œI doubt that.โ€

โ€œOh yeah?โ€ Her eyes narrowed once again in challenge. โ€œTry me.โ€

โ€œOkay then.โ€ Grinning, I began to reel off the names of every book I could remember, while this strange little girl accepted my challenge by responding with the names of the main characters in every book. And I meanย every single book. From there, she stunned me with her ability to not only count but add and subtract in her head, without a copybook to work out the sums. She could spell every single word I threw at her, even the difficult ones I planned to catch her out with. Except the only thing that caught me out wasย surpriseย when she spelled every word without breaking a sweat.

โ€œHow do you know all this?โ€ I asked, attention glued to this girl and everything that came out of her mouth because I had never felt more impressed by another person in my life. It wasnโ€™t just her outfit that matched mine, but her brain did, too. โ€œClaire doesnโ€™t know a quarter of the things you do.โ€

She grinned victoriously. โ€œTold you Iโ€™m smart.โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€ I eyed her warily. โ€œYou donโ€™t act like youโ€™re in junior infants.โ€

She shrugged and tossed back, โ€œYou donโ€™t act like youโ€™re in first class.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s because Iโ€™m smarter than most seven-year-olds.โ€

โ€œYeah, and Iโ€™m smarter than most six-year-olds.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re six?โ€ My brows rose in surprise. โ€œWhen were you born?โ€

โ€œJune 9, 1988.โ€

โ€œSo Iโ€™m less than a year older than you?โ€

โ€œSeven months and twenty-two days.โ€ She smirked. โ€œI counted.โ€

โ€œThen how come youโ€™re in junior infants? Shouldnโ€™t you be in seniors?โ€ I frowned. โ€œOr first class like me.โ€

โ€œUh, yeah.โ€ The light in her eyes quickly faded and she dropped her gaze to her lap. โ€œI know.โ€

โ€œDid you get held back or something?โ€ I asked, even though I found it hard to believe. It wouldnโ€™t make sense to make a girl as bright as her repeat a year of school.

โ€œI used to go to a different school in the city,โ€ she replied, voice small now. I followed her gaze to where she was clasping her hands together so tightly the skin was turning white. โ€œBut when I moved to Sacred Heart, they put me in juniors.โ€ She chewed on her bottom lip. โ€œIโ€™m not slow,โ€ she hurried to add, digging her fingernails into her hand. โ€œI swear Iโ€™m notโ€ฆโ€

โ€œI know youโ€™re not, okay?โ€ I replied, reaching down to peel her hands apart. โ€œAnd who cares if youโ€™re the oldest in your class?โ€ She didnโ€™t seem to realize that she was scratching herself, but I noticed. โ€œYouโ€™re younger than most of my class and still way smarter.โ€

Her head snapped up, and her blue eyes locked on mine. โ€œI am?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€ I nodded, wanting to take the worry away for her. I could see it in her eyes, and I didnโ€™t like it. โ€œYou are.โ€

When the fear in her eyes was replaced with hope and her small hand tightened around mine, I felt a tingling sensation surge through me. While my brain seemed confused by the tingling, my heart assured me that it was an important feeling.

Thatย sheย was important.

โ€œMy words used to get stuck,โ€ she explained then, still holding my hand. โ€œIt was hard for me to get them out.โ€

โ€œLike a stutter?โ€ I asked, feeling doubtful. There was a boy in my class at school who had a really bad one. Lizzie didnโ€™t seem to have any problem pronouncing her words.

โ€œNope, not a stutter. They just got stuck,โ€ she replied, looking up at me with those pale blue eyes. โ€œBut I can get them out now.โ€

โ€œWell, thatโ€™s good.โ€ I smiled. โ€œBecause you have a nice voice.โ€

Her eyes lit up. โ€œI do?โ€

Aw, crap.

She pulled her hand from mine then and clutched her stomach. โ€œUh-oh.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s my belly,โ€ she explained. โ€œIt keeps twisting around.โ€

I eyed her warily. โ€œLike in a pukey way?โ€

โ€œNo, not pukey.โ€ She paused for a moment before saying. โ€œMore like hiccups.โ€

โ€œIn your throat?โ€

โ€œNo, hiccups in my belly,โ€ she corrected. โ€œAnd butterflies in my throat.โ€

I frowned. โ€œSoโ€ฆyou have flutter-cups?โ€

โ€œOh my God, yes!โ€ She nodded eagerly. โ€œI have flutter-cups!โ€

โ€œFuck.โ€ I couldnโ€™t stop the laugh that escaped me. โ€œYouโ€™re so strange.โ€

โ€œSay it again.โ€

โ€œFuck?โ€

She grinned. โ€œFuck.โ€

โ€œHow are your flutter-cups?โ€

โ€œStill there, but itโ€™s okay,โ€ she laughed. โ€œThey donโ€™t hurt.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s good to know,โ€ I replied.ย Because I think I caught them, too.

โ€œWhat did you mean on the bus?โ€ she asked then. โ€œAbout me being right.โ€

Aw double crap.

โ€œUhโ€ฆIโ€™ll tell you later.โ€ Pushing the car door open, I sprang out before I embarrassed myself further. โ€œCome on.โ€ Smiling, I waved at her to follow me. โ€œLetโ€™s go inside and play.โ€
