FEELING EXTREMELY SELF-CONSCIOUS,ย I stood on the
physician scales in examination room 3B in the maternity hospital and watched as the midwife fiddled with the reading rod.
My heart was racing violently in my chest, and every ounce of blood I seemed to possess had decided to rush to my cheeks.
I loathed being weighed.
I loathed being here even more.
But the worst part of the whole ordeal was that I had to do it alone.
Today was day eight of Joey being AWOL and I was at my breaking point.
โYouโre a fine tall girl, arenโt you? Just under 5โ9,โ the midwife mused, distracting me from my internal meltdown. โIs the babyโs father tall?โ
โUm, yeah, he is,โ I replied, stepping off the scales, and toeing my pumps back on. โHeโs about 6โ1.โ
โYouโll have a fine tall baby on your hands so,โ she chuckled, scribbling in the red folder that I had been given at reception. โNow, youโve had your urine sample taken and your bloodwork done, so why donโt we take a seat and go through some medical history.โ
โOkay.โ
โIs babyโs father joining us?โ
โUh, no, heโs, ahโฆโ Voice trailing off, I slumped in the chair before adding, โHe really wanted to be here, but he couldnโt get time off work.โ
The lie slipped off my tongue to join a whole host of other lies I had told this past week to explain my boyfriendโs absence to the people in my life. Because telling the truth was out of the question.
The only one I had been able to confide in was Casey.
โNo problem,โ the midwife replied, taking the seat opposite me. โYou can answer any of the questions you know about your partnerโs family history, and if he has any concerns, he can have additional information added at any time.โ
โOkay.โ Clasping my hands on my lap, I nodded and forced a smile. โAsk away.โ
โFirst day of your last menstrual cycle?โ โDecember fourteenth.โ
โAnd how long does your cycle last?โ
โAnything between 28 and 35 days usually.โ
โDo you or your partner, or any family members have any history of diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, autoimmune disease, epilepsy, or any other serious medical illness not mentioned?โ
โUh, noโฆโ I roughly cleared my throat. โNot that Iโm aware of.โ
โAre there any genetic conditions in your family or your partnerโs family of downโs syndrome, muscular dystrophy, spina bifida or any other serious
genetic condition not mentioned?โ
โNo,โ I breathed, heart fluttering nervously. โNothing.โ โWhat about a history of twins?โ
โIโm a twin,โ I replied. โIโve a twin brother. My motherโs aunt has two sets of twins. Thatโs all as far as I know.โ
โAre there any allergies in your family or your partnerโs family?โ โI have an intolerance to bullshit if that counts?โ
She smiled. โNo, thatโs okay.โ
I shrugged, face flaming with heat. โOkay.โ
โAny recurrent miscarriage or stillbirth in the family?โ โUh no, not on my side.โ
โYour partnerโs?โ
โUh, his mam lost a baby late into her last pregnancy.โ
The midwifeโs eyes flickered with sympathy. โIโm sorry to hear that. Do you happen to know what the cause of that loss was?โ
โI think she had a placental abruption?โ I squeezed out, flustered. โIโm not entirely sure. Sheโs had a lot of children. I think that one was her seventh?โ
The midwifeโs brows rose in surprise. โAnd your partner? Heโs numberโฆโ
โTwo,โ I filled in. โHeโs her second son.โ โBig family.โ
Big mess.ย โYeah.โ
โSexual partnersโโ
โIโve only been with him,โ I blurted out, cutting her off. โWeโve been together since fifth year, but weโve been friends since first year.โ
She smiled warmly at me. โAnd your partner?โ
โUh, heโs had other sexual partners, but since weโve been together, itโs only been us.โ
โUh-huh, and are you a smoker?โ โNo.โ
โIs your partner a smoker?โ โUh, yeah.โ
โAnd your alcohol intake?โ
โIโm eighteen,โ I replied with a shrug. โWhen I went out, it was a matter of go hard or go home.โ
โAnd during this pregnancy?โ
โGod no,โ I spluttered. โI would never knowingly drink while Iโm pregnant.โ
โAnd babyโs father?โ
โNo.โ My palms began to sweat. โHeโs not a big drinker.โ โWhat about birth control?โ
โI was on the pill,โ I explained. โObviously, I stopped taking it once I
found out.โ
โDo you use condoms?โ โNo.โ
โAny vitamins and supplements?โ
โIโve been taking folic acid and these multivitamins for pregnancy that my mam bought in the chemist.โ
โWhat about recreational drug use?โ
Oh Jesus, here we go.
โIโve never taken anything stronger than a paracetamol in my life.โ
โUh-huh,โ she replied, scribbling down everything I told her in my folder. โAnd your partner?โ
I hesitated.
โIโm not here to judge, Aoife,โ she said, noticing my reluctance. โEverything Iโm asking is for the benefit of your baby.โ Her eyes were warm and full of kindness when she said, โItโs all in confidence.โ
โHeโs fine,โ I squeezed out, heart hammering wildly in my chest. โI meanโฆyeah, he dabbled a little in the past, but heโs fine now.โ
โAnd when you say he dabbled?โ
I shrugged, unable to get my voice to comply because talking meant betraying him, and my heart strings refused point blank to do that.
โAoife, if thereโs a pattern of drug abuse in,โ she paused to glance at her notes before adding, โJoeyโs history, then thatโs necessary information for your unborn baby.โ
โA little weed,โ I finally came out with, deciding that weed was the lesser of evils in this instance. โBut like I said, heโs fine now.โ
โOkay.โ Setting my folder down on the chair beside her, she leaned forward and rested her elbows on her knees. โIโm going to ask you some questions and I want you to be completely transparent with me.โ
โOkay.โ
โDoes your partner have a history of alcohol or substance abuse?โ โNo, I already told you that heโs not a big drinker.โ
โAside from marijuana, does your partner consume other illegal substances?โ she pushed. โSubstances that could put you at risk?โ
โLike what?โ
โIs he an intravenous drug user, for example?โ
โNo,โ I choked out, flustered. โI mean, not really.โ โNot really?โ
โHe has in the past.โ
โOkay.โ Concern flooded her eyes. โAnd has your partner ever been violent with you?โ
โWhat?โ I balked. โNo.โ
โHas your partner ever caused harm or pain to your body?โ
โThatโs the same question,โ I snapped. โAnd the answerโs still no. He has never laid a finger on me, and he never would.โ
โDo you feel like youโre in danger?โ
โOh my god, no,โ I snapped, knees bopping restlessly. โHe wouldnโt harm a hair on my head.โ
โOkay.โ Reaching over, she gave my knee a supportive squeeze. โI donโt want you to panic, and itโs purely hospital protocol, but weโre going to have to have more extensive bloodwork sent off.โ
โFor what?โ
โTo eliminate any sexually transmitted diseases not screened in your previous bloodwork.โ
โWhy?โ I demanded. โJoey and I are only with each other.โ
โMore often than not intravenous drug users have a tendency of using contaminated needles. Not to mention the lack of inhibition when under the influence. Itโs not uncommon for pregnant women in similar circumstances to present with STDs, even when they have only been with their partner, therefore I canโt stress to you enough the importance of protecting yourself during intercourse.โ
โHeโs notย dirty,โ I strangled out, mind completely reeling from the information she was throwing at me. โHeโs a great guy. Heโs smart and responsible, and in school, and has a job. Heโs a Cork hurler for Godโs sake.โ
โWe have a service available at the hospital for young mothers that I think might be of great benefit to youโโ
โNo thank you.โ I shook my head. โI donโt need any of that.โ
โIโm going to refer you anyway and have a member from their team contact you in due course.โ Ignoring my wishes, the midwife reached for my notes and resumed her scribbling before standing up and moving for the door. โIโm going to need you to wait here, Aoife. Iโll be back shortly.โ
Oh god.
This was not good.
This was not good at all.
Sliding my phone out of my pocket, I quickly dialed the one number I knew would always answer me and held the phone to my ear.
โAoife, love, are you alright?โ
โMam. Can you come up to the hospital?โ Clenching my eyes shut, I blew out a ragged breath before whispering, โI really need you.โ
