Redeeming 6 (Boys of Tommen, #4)

JOEY

โ€œWHERE IS HE?โ€ย I asked the moment my girlfriend was gone, as a million thoughts were rushing around in my mind. While my heart was demanding answers to even more questions, only one question stood out in my hazy thoughts. โ€œWhereโ€™s Dad?โ€

โ€œThe Gards havenโ€™t been able to find him.โ€ Of course they hadnโ€™t.

The old man wouldnโ€™t resurface until the time was right.

He was as sharp as a tack.

He knew how to play the system better than anyone.

I didnโ€™t want Molloy to have to hear any of this. I didnโ€™t want that man tainting her life any more than he already had.

โ€œTheyโ€™ll find him, Joey,โ€ Darren continued to say.ย To fucking lie. โ€œThe Gards are scouring the countryside looking for him. He wonโ€™t get away with it. Not this time.โ€

โ€œNot this time,โ€ I repeated his words slowly, gaze flicking from Darren to Mam. โ€œWhat makes you think this time is different?โ€

All along they had been in contact with each other.

Never once in the past five and a half years had he attempted to reach out to me.

When I thought about Shannon and how my disappearing for five years would affect her, I physically recoiled.

I could never do it.

I could never leave them like that.

Knowing that he could and did made me so fucking resentful that I was practically choking on my hatred.

I knew he had to get out, we all did, but it didnโ€™t change how it all rolled out.

Now he was here, acting like the fucking savior of all things Lynch, and I despised him for it.

โ€œBecause Mam is ready to leave him.โ€ Darrenโ€™s tone was laced with sincerity, which assured me that he truly believed the shit he was spurting. โ€œThis time sheโ€™s really ready, Joe.โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s not ready,โ€ I replied flatly, ignoring the way my mother nodded eagerly like a loyal dog. โ€œShe wonโ€™t leave him until sheโ€™s in a box and youโ€™re a fool if you believe otherwise.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not true, Joey,โ€ she tried to coax, closing the space between us and taking the spot my girlfriend had vacated. โ€œIโ€™ve been to the court. There was an emergency hearing. Iโ€™ve been granted a safety order.โ€

Words.

They were just words.

Iโ€™d heard them all a million times before.

They meant as little now as any other time. Promises made, promises broken.

It was bullshit.

โ€œAnd you?โ€ I turned my attention to the turncoat bastard I hadnโ€™t laid eyes on since puberty hit me. โ€œWhatโ€™s your angle?โ€

Darrenโ€™s brows furrowed. โ€œMy angle?โ€

โ€œWhat do you want?โ€ I asked, tone void of all emotion. โ€œWhat are you doing here?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m back to help,โ€ he said, roughly clearing his throat. โ€œI came home for my family, Joe.โ€

โ€œYour family.โ€

โ€œYeah, my family.โ€ Tears filled his eyes. โ€œI missed you so much, kid.โ€

There was so much resentment built up inside of me that I was honestly afraid to open my mouth out of fear of what might slip out.

It was a good thing that I was heavily medicated in this moment or I might have lunged for the prick.

โ€œHave you spoken to the Gards?โ€ Mam asked, pulling a tissue from the sleeve of her cardigan and wiping her nose.

โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œBecause I think we need to get our stories aligned,โ€ Darren answered for her. Another man answering for her. Another fucking boss. โ€œWe need to figure out how we swing this to the Gards.โ€

โ€œThereโ€™s no story to align,โ€ I deadpanned. โ€œI wonโ€™t lie for either one of them. Never again. As far as Iโ€™m concerned, sheโ€™s as responsible for what

happened to Shannon as our old man is. So you two can swing whatever the fuck you want, but leave me out of any bullshit fabrications.โ€

โ€œCome on, Joey, I know youโ€™re hurting right now, but youโ€™re not the only victim here. Mam is a victim, too.โ€

โ€œDid I sayย Iย was a victim?โ€

โ€œNo,ย Iโ€™mย saying that youโ€™re a victimโ€”โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t know the first thing about me,โ€ I spat, cutting him off. โ€œYou donโ€™t know what the fuck Iโ€™ve been through, so donโ€™t swan in here trying to feed me a line and slap a label on my forehead. Iโ€™m done with it.โ€ I turned to my mother and doubled down. โ€œI am done withย you.โ€

I was.

I meant it.

I fucking meant it.

Never again would I give her the opportunity to let me down.

โ€œI know youโ€™ve been going down a bad path for a long time now,โ€ Darren had the gall to say. โ€œI also know that youโ€™ve got yourself a little Joey on the way.โ€

โ€œGood news travels fast,โ€ I replied coolly. โ€œGet all that from one of your mommy and son phone calls?โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s the girl from the wall, right? The one you had your eye on back in first year?โ€

โ€œThe fuck would you know about it?โ€ I seethed, jaw clenching. โ€œYou werenโ€™t around when I was in first year. You bailed, asshole.โ€

โ€œI remember your reaction to her that day.โ€

โ€œGood for you.โ€

โ€œYou got the girl pregnant while youโ€™re still in school, Joe? Really?โ€ His tone was dripping with condescension when he said, โ€œTalk about following in the old manโ€™s footsteps and repeating the goddamn cycle!โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t even think about lecturing me, asshole,โ€ I snapped, refusing to show him how deeply he cut me with his words. โ€œI amย notย our old man, andย sheย is none of your fucking business!โ€

โ€œAnd Shane Holland?โ€ he continued to challenge, giving me a hard look. โ€œIs he none of my business either? Goddammit, Joey, what did I tell you about messing around with that guy?โ€

โ€œShit, Dar, I canโ€™t remember.โ€ I shrugged. โ€œHow longโ€™s it been since we spoke? Five, six years?โ€

โ€œJoey.โ€ He sighed wearily. โ€œYou know why I had to leave.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t Joey me,โ€ I sneered. โ€œYou donโ€™t get to stroll back in here and call the shots. Youโ€™re not the patriarch of the family, asshole.โ€

โ€œAnd you are?โ€

โ€œI did the best I could with the hand I was given,โ€ I shot back. โ€œSo, donโ€™t look down your goddamn nose at my choices. At least I stuck around.โ€

โ€œPlease donโ€™t fight with each other,โ€ Mam pleaded, placing her hand on Darrenโ€™s shoulder. โ€œWeโ€™re all family here.โ€

โ€œNo. you two are family,โ€ I bit out, tone hoarse. โ€œMy family just left.โ€ โ€œWh-what do you mean?โ€

โ€œThat girl isnโ€™t your family, Joe. We are.โ€

Not bothering answering either one of them, I pulled at the wires and leads attached to my body and climbed unsteadily to my feet.

โ€œJoey, what are you doing?โ€

โ€œShannon,โ€ I bit out, searching the small area for my clothes. โ€œAoife said sheโ€™s upstairs. Which ward is she on?โ€

โ€œJoey, stop,โ€ Mam cried, when I ripped the needle out of my arm and moved for my jeans that were hanging on the back of the chair next to my bed. โ€œLie down and rest. Youโ€™re not supposed to be out of bed.โ€

Ripping off the hospital gown, I stood shivering in my jocks, feeling like my head was about to explode, but needing to move because the prospect of staying here was unthinkable.

โ€œJesus Christ,โ€ I heard Darren choke out when I turned my back to them. โ€œWhat did Dad do to him, Mam?โ€

Darren.

Fucking Darren.

โ€œShannon,โ€ was all I managed to get out, as my head spun and my mind struggled to focus. It wasnโ€™t too bad when I was lying down, but standing up made my head swim. โ€œI need to see my sister.โ€

โ€œJoey, you canโ€™t leave.โ€ โ€œFuck you.โ€

โ€œYou have to be discharged by a doctor and youโ€™re in no fit state to go

anywhere.โ€

โ€œI said fuck you.โ€ โ€œJoey, please!โ€

โ€œWhere is myย sister?โ€ Mind reeling, I clumsily stepped into the legs of my jeans, and dragged them up my hips before snatching up the blood- stained hoodie. โ€œWhereโ€™s Shannon?โ€

Fuck if I knew where my t-shirt was, and in this moment, I didnโ€™t care.

The only thing I cared about was getting out of this place and far away from these people.

โ€œYouโ€™re not leaving.โ€ Two hands came down on my shoulders and I all but took leave of my senses. โ€œJust lie down and rest, okay?โ€

โ€œGet your fucking hands off me,โ€ I snarled, stumbling away from the ghost of my past. โ€œDonโ€™t you ever put your hands on me again!โ€

โ€œItโ€™s me.โ€ Holding his hands up in retreat, Darren watched me warily. โ€œI would never hurt you, Joe. You know that.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know you,โ€ I spat, ripping off the bandage from my eye that was preventing me from seeing clearly. From protecting myself. โ€œI donโ€™t know who the fuck you are anymore!โ€

โ€œJoe.โ€ Emotion filled his eyes. โ€œIโ€™m your brother.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re no brother of mine,โ€ I sneered and then winced when pain rocketed through my eyes. Fuck, the lights hurt so damn bad. โ€œSo, keep your goddamn hands to yourself. Because I donโ€™t care whose body you came out of, I will…โ€ Staggering sideways, I gripped the wall for balance. โ€œJust leave me the fuck alone!โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s going on here?โ€ the nurse whoโ€™d been looking after me all day asked, pushing the curtain open. โ€œJoseph, sweetheart, you need to get back into bed.โ€

โ€œNo, you need to get whatever paperwork I need to sign, because Iโ€™m out of here,โ€ I replied, leaning heavily against the wall, as I toed on my runners. โ€œFuck, where are my socks?โ€

โ€œJoey, you canโ€™t just leave!โ€

โ€œI told you to fuck off!โ€ Wincing in pain, I clutched my head and tried to stop my head from spinning. โ€œI need to see my sister. Make sure sheโ€™s okay.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not a good idea,โ€œ the nurse said in a coaxing tone, moving to my side. โ€œWhy donโ€™t we send your family home and sit down for a little chat? Just the two of us?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m leaving,โ€ I bit out, shuddering in revulsion when her small hand cupped my elbow. โ€œDo I need to sign a discharge form or something?โ€

โ€œWhy donโ€™t we give your girlfriend a call?โ€ she suggested, trying to steer me back to the bed. โ€œHm? Whatโ€™s her name again?โ€

โ€œAoife.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s right. How about you get back into bed and Iโ€™ll go and call Aoife? She left her phone number back at the nurses station. You just rest up here and Iโ€™ll go and call her for you. Hm?โ€

โ€œNo, no, no,โ€ I groaned, shaking my head when a wave of confusion hit me. โ€œDonโ€™t call her. She needs to rest. Just help me get out of here.โ€

โ€œJoey, please just lie back down and rest.โ€

โ€œHow about we all give Joey some space,โ€ I heard the nurse instruct. โ€œGood lad yourself. Just hold onto my hand and youโ€™re nice and safe.โ€

โ€œJoey, baby, are you okay?โ€

โ€œMy eyes,โ€ I groaned, blinking rapidly when my vision blurred in and out of focus. โ€œThereโ€™s something wrong with my eyes.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re going to feel disorientated for a few days,โ€ the nurse coaxed as she walked me back to my prison. โ€œWhich is why you need to rest up and let us take care of you, okay?โ€

โ€œIs he going to be okay?โ€

โ€œOut,โ€ I heard the nurse command. โ€œNow please.โ€ โ€œTell him that weโ€™ll come back later.โ€

โ€œLeave now, please. Or I will call security.โ€

โ€œFuck,โ€ I groaned, feeling faint. โ€œI donโ€™t want to see them.โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t have to,โ€ I heard the nurse say. โ€œNow, Iโ€™ve spoken to the ward manager on floor 3, and thereโ€™s a bed after coming available upstairs for you. The porter will be around shortly to take you up.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t want to go upstairs,โ€ I croaked out, feeling myself sink down on the bed. โ€œI want to go home.โ€

โ€œGood lad,โ€ she coaxed, fluffing the pillows at my back. โ€œWhat have you done to your poor arm, hm?โ€

Groaning, I slapped a hand over my eyes and winced. โ€œFuck knows.โ€ โ€œIโ€™ll put a fresh line in for you.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t want a line,โ€ I mumbled, clenching my eyes shut when the room

started spinning. โ€œI justโ€ฆ I want something for the pain.โ€

โ€œOkay, Iโ€™ll get you something for pain, Joseph,โ€ I heard her reply. โ€œWhere is the pain worse? In your head?โ€

โ€œNo, itโ€™s here,โ€ I whispered, rubbing my chest. โ€œHereโ€™s the worst.โ€ โ€œYour heart?โ€

I nodded stiffly.

โ€œOkay, sweetheart,โ€ the nurse replied softly. โ€œJust close your eyes and get some rest. Iโ€™ll go and fetch you something for the pain.โ€
