JOEY
โWHERE IS HE?โย I asked the moment my girlfriend was gone, as a million thoughts were rushing around in my mind. While my heart was demanding answers to even more questions, only one question stood out in my hazy thoughts. โWhereโs Dad?โ
โThe Gards havenโt been able to find him.โ Of course they hadnโt.
The old man wouldnโt resurface until the time was right.
He was as sharp as a tack.
He knew how to play the system better than anyone.
I didnโt want Molloy to have to hear any of this. I didnโt want that man tainting her life any more than he already had.
โTheyโll find him, Joey,โ Darren continued to say.ย To fucking lie. โThe Gards are scouring the countryside looking for him. He wonโt get away with it. Not this time.โ
โNot this time,โ I repeated his words slowly, gaze flicking from Darren to Mam. โWhat makes you think this time is different?โ
All along they had been in contact with each other.
Never once in the past five and a half years had he attempted to reach out to me.
When I thought about Shannon and how my disappearing for five years would affect her, I physically recoiled.
I could never do it.
I could never leave them like that.
Knowing that he could and did made me so fucking resentful that I was practically choking on my hatred.
I knew he had to get out, we all did, but it didnโt change how it all rolled out.
Now he was here, acting like the fucking savior of all things Lynch, and I despised him for it.
โBecause Mam is ready to leave him.โ Darrenโs tone was laced with sincerity, which assured me that he truly believed the shit he was spurting. โThis time sheโs really ready, Joe.โ
โSheโs not ready,โ I replied flatly, ignoring the way my mother nodded eagerly like a loyal dog. โShe wonโt leave him until sheโs in a box and youโre a fool if you believe otherwise.โ
โThatโs not true, Joey,โ she tried to coax, closing the space between us and taking the spot my girlfriend had vacated. โIโve been to the court. There was an emergency hearing. Iโve been granted a safety order.โ
Words.
They were just words.
Iโd heard them all a million times before.
They meant as little now as any other time. Promises made, promises broken.
It was bullshit.
โAnd you?โ I turned my attention to the turncoat bastard I hadnโt laid eyes on since puberty hit me. โWhatโs your angle?โ
Darrenโs brows furrowed. โMy angle?โ
โWhat do you want?โ I asked, tone void of all emotion. โWhat are you doing here?โ
โIโm back to help,โ he said, roughly clearing his throat. โI came home for my family, Joe.โ
โYour family.โ
โYeah, my family.โ Tears filled his eyes. โI missed you so much, kid.โ
There was so much resentment built up inside of me that I was honestly afraid to open my mouth out of fear of what might slip out.
It was a good thing that I was heavily medicated in this moment or I might have lunged for the prick.
โHave you spoken to the Gards?โ Mam asked, pulling a tissue from the sleeve of her cardigan and wiping her nose.
โWhy?โ
โBecause I think we need to get our stories aligned,โ Darren answered for her. Another man answering for her. Another fucking boss. โWe need to figure out how we swing this to the Gards.โ
โThereโs no story to align,โ I deadpanned. โI wonโt lie for either one of them. Never again. As far as Iโm concerned, sheโs as responsible for what
happened to Shannon as our old man is. So you two can swing whatever the fuck you want, but leave me out of any bullshit fabrications.โ
โCome on, Joey, I know youโre hurting right now, but youโre not the only victim here. Mam is a victim, too.โ
โDid I sayย Iย was a victim?โ
โNo,ย Iโmย saying that youโre a victimโโ
โYou donโt know the first thing about me,โ I spat, cutting him off. โYou donโt know what the fuck Iโve been through, so donโt swan in here trying to feed me a line and slap a label on my forehead. Iโm done with it.โ I turned to my mother and doubled down. โI am done withย you.โ
I was.
I meant it.
I fucking meant it.
Never again would I give her the opportunity to let me down.
โI know youโve been going down a bad path for a long time now,โ Darren had the gall to say. โI also know that youโve got yourself a little Joey on the way.โ
โGood news travels fast,โ I replied coolly. โGet all that from one of your mommy and son phone calls?โ
โSheโs the girl from the wall, right? The one you had your eye on back in first year?โ
โThe fuck would you know about it?โ I seethed, jaw clenching. โYou werenโt around when I was in first year. You bailed, asshole.โ
โI remember your reaction to her that day.โ
โGood for you.โ
โYou got the girl pregnant while youโre still in school, Joe? Really?โ His tone was dripping with condescension when he said, โTalk about following in the old manโs footsteps and repeating the goddamn cycle!โ
โDonโt even think about lecturing me, asshole,โ I snapped, refusing to show him how deeply he cut me with his words. โI amย notย our old man, andย sheย is none of your fucking business!โ
โAnd Shane Holland?โ he continued to challenge, giving me a hard look. โIs he none of my business either? Goddammit, Joey, what did I tell you about messing around with that guy?โ
โShit, Dar, I canโt remember.โ I shrugged. โHow longโs it been since we spoke? Five, six years?โ
โJoey.โ He sighed wearily. โYou know why I had to leave.โ
โDonโt Joey me,โ I sneered. โYou donโt get to stroll back in here and call the shots. Youโre not the patriarch of the family, asshole.โ
โAnd you are?โ
โI did the best I could with the hand I was given,โ I shot back. โSo, donโt look down your goddamn nose at my choices. At least I stuck around.โ
โPlease donโt fight with each other,โ Mam pleaded, placing her hand on Darrenโs shoulder. โWeโre all family here.โ
โNo. you two are family,โ I bit out, tone hoarse. โMy family just left.โ โWh-what do you mean?โ
โThat girl isnโt your family, Joe. We are.โ
Not bothering answering either one of them, I pulled at the wires and leads attached to my body and climbed unsteadily to my feet.
โJoey, what are you doing?โ
โShannon,โ I bit out, searching the small area for my clothes. โAoife said sheโs upstairs. Which ward is she on?โ
โJoey, stop,โ Mam cried, when I ripped the needle out of my arm and moved for my jeans that were hanging on the back of the chair next to my bed. โLie down and rest. Youโre not supposed to be out of bed.โ
Ripping off the hospital gown, I stood shivering in my jocks, feeling like my head was about to explode, but needing to move because the prospect of staying here was unthinkable.
โJesus Christ,โ I heard Darren choke out when I turned my back to them. โWhat did Dad do to him, Mam?โ
Darren.
Fucking Darren.
โShannon,โ was all I managed to get out, as my head spun and my mind struggled to focus. It wasnโt too bad when I was lying down, but standing up made my head swim. โI need to see my sister.โ
โJoey, you canโt leave.โ โFuck you.โ
โYou have to be discharged by a doctor and youโre in no fit state to go
anywhere.โ
โI said fuck you.โ โJoey, please!โ
โWhere is myย sister?โ Mind reeling, I clumsily stepped into the legs of my jeans, and dragged them up my hips before snatching up the blood- stained hoodie. โWhereโs Shannon?โ
Fuck if I knew where my t-shirt was, and in this moment, I didnโt care.
The only thing I cared about was getting out of this place and far away from these people.
โYouโre not leaving.โ Two hands came down on my shoulders and I all but took leave of my senses. โJust lie down and rest, okay?โ
โGet your fucking hands off me,โ I snarled, stumbling away from the ghost of my past. โDonโt you ever put your hands on me again!โ
โItโs me.โ Holding his hands up in retreat, Darren watched me warily. โI would never hurt you, Joe. You know that.โ
โI donโt know you,โ I spat, ripping off the bandage from my eye that was preventing me from seeing clearly. From protecting myself. โI donโt know who the fuck you are anymore!โ
โJoe.โ Emotion filled his eyes. โIโm your brother.โ
โYouโre no brother of mine,โ I sneered and then winced when pain rocketed through my eyes. Fuck, the lights hurt so damn bad. โSo, keep your goddamn hands to yourself. Because I donโt care whose body you came out of, I will…โ Staggering sideways, I gripped the wall for balance. โJust leave me the fuck alone!โ
โWhatโs going on here?โ the nurse whoโd been looking after me all day asked, pushing the curtain open. โJoseph, sweetheart, you need to get back into bed.โ
โNo, you need to get whatever paperwork I need to sign, because Iโm out of here,โ I replied, leaning heavily against the wall, as I toed on my runners. โFuck, where are my socks?โ
โJoey, you canโt just leave!โ
โI told you to fuck off!โ Wincing in pain, I clutched my head and tried to stop my head from spinning. โI need to see my sister. Make sure sheโs okay.โ
โThatโs not a good idea,โ the nurse said in a coaxing tone, moving to my side. โWhy donโt we send your family home and sit down for a little chat? Just the two of us?โ
โIโm leaving,โ I bit out, shuddering in revulsion when her small hand cupped my elbow. โDo I need to sign a discharge form or something?โ
โWhy donโt we give your girlfriend a call?โ she suggested, trying to steer me back to the bed. โHm? Whatโs her name again?โ
โAoife.โ
โThatโs right. How about you get back into bed and Iโll go and call Aoife? She left her phone number back at the nurses station. You just rest up here and Iโll go and call her for you. Hm?โ
โNo, no, no,โ I groaned, shaking my head when a wave of confusion hit me. โDonโt call her. She needs to rest. Just help me get out of here.โ
โJoey, please just lie back down and rest.โ
โHow about we all give Joey some space,โ I heard the nurse instruct. โGood lad yourself. Just hold onto my hand and youโre nice and safe.โ
โJoey, baby, are you okay?โ
โMy eyes,โ I groaned, blinking rapidly when my vision blurred in and out of focus. โThereโs something wrong with my eyes.โ
โYouโre going to feel disorientated for a few days,โ the nurse coaxed as she walked me back to my prison. โWhich is why you need to rest up and let us take care of you, okay?โ
โIs he going to be okay?โ
โOut,โ I heard the nurse command. โNow please.โ โTell him that weโll come back later.โ
โLeave now, please. Or I will call security.โ
โFuck,โ I groaned, feeling faint. โI donโt want to see them.โ
โYou donโt have to,โ I heard the nurse say. โNow, Iโve spoken to the ward manager on floor 3, and thereโs a bed after coming available upstairs for you. The porter will be around shortly to take you up.โ
โI donโt want to go upstairs,โ I croaked out, feeling myself sink down on the bed. โI want to go home.โ
โGood lad,โ she coaxed, fluffing the pillows at my back. โWhat have you done to your poor arm, hm?โ
Groaning, I slapped a hand over my eyes and winced. โFuck knows.โ โIโll put a fresh line in for you.โ
โI donโt want a line,โ I mumbled, clenching my eyes shut when the room
started spinning. โI justโฆ I want something for the pain.โ
โOkay, Iโll get you something for pain, Joseph,โ I heard her reply. โWhere is the pain worse? In your head?โ
โNo, itโs here,โ I whispered, rubbing my chest. โHereโs the worst.โ โYour heart?โ
I nodded stiffly.
โOkay, sweetheart,โ the nurse replied softly. โJust close your eyes and get some rest. Iโll go and fetch you something for the pain.โ
