Chapter no 72 -โ€Œ โ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€ŒFOR BETTER OR WORSE

Redeeming 6 (Boys of Tommen, #4)

AOIFE

TWENTY-FOUR HOURS HAD PASSEDย since we had barreled into the A&E with Joey carrying his sister in his arms, while I screamed the place down for help.

To be fair, help had come instantly, but once Shannon was rushed away on a gurney, surrounded by a flurry of nurses and doctors, Joey had unceremoniously collapsed in a heap on the waiting room floor.

Reeling didnโ€™t come close to describing how I felt as I sat at my boyfriendโ€™s bedside, behind a pale blue curtain, in the middle of a jam-packed accident and emergency, as we continued to wait for a bed on a ward to become available. Whatever they had given him for pain relief a few hours ago had knocked him out cold and I was relieved.

The longer he slept, the longer I knew he was safe.

The longer he was protected from the pain that I knew would swallow him

up.

Because I knew in my heart once the meds wore off and his poor knocked

around brain came back to its full senses that he would be up and out of here. It wouldnโ€™t matter to him that he needed to rest, or that his body had taken an

unmerciful battering. Joey would go straight to his sisterโ€™s bedside without thought for the consequences โ€“ or himself.

And after he visited his sister, I didnโ€™t want to think about what would follow.

Resting my elbows on his bed, I continued to watch him sleep, and I continued to cry.

His face was barely recognizable beneath the gauze, tape, and bandages. His left eye was hidden behind a white bandage, while the bridge of his nose was taped up. The bruising and swelling around his right eye so extensive that even when he was awake, it was hard to tell.

Biting down on my lip, I smothered a sob and reached over to brush his hair off his forehead, only to expose more bruising.

It was everywhere.

Every inch of his skin told a story of vicious abuse at the hands of a monster.

The raw welts on his back that I discovered when helping him undress last night had caused everything in my stomach to come back up.

There was no hiding what had happened to him.

His fatherโ€™s belt had left welts deeply imbedded into his flesh.

Forcing myself to be strong for him, I remained right by his side, unwilling to leave him for longer than it took me to grab a cup of tea from the vending machine. Mam had called countless times, begging me to come home for a shower and to have something decent to eat, but I couldnโ€™t do it.

I couldnโ€™t leave him. I never would.

The Garda Siochana had come and gone, looking for statements from my boyfriend that he was in no fit state to make. Social workers, a Garda victim service officer, not to mention many other authority figures had made an appearance, too.

Nanny Murphy had somehow managed to get ahold of my phone number and had called several times to check on her great-grandson and to relay messages to Joey, but that was it.

She was the only one.

Not once since he was wheeled into triage had I caught a glimpse of Marie Lynch.

I understood that Shannon was in a bad way, Nanny had told me that she had a collapsed lung, but Joey was hurt, too, dammit.

He had a fractured skull for fuckโ€™s sake!

It was a wonder that his brain wasnโ€™t complete mush.

The doctor said it himself; it was aย miracleย that he was still here. โ€œMolloy.โ€ Releasing a pained groan, Joey covered my hand with his and

blinked his one good eye open. โ€œWhat did I tell ya about crying?โ€ Sniffling, I forced a smile and whispered, โ€œHey, stud.โ€

โ€œHey, queen.โ€ His voice was raspy and torn. โ€œNice legs.โ€

I choked out a sob. โ€œNice everything.โ€ โ€œDonโ€™t cry for me.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not.โ€ I forced a brighter smile. โ€œYour nose is pancaked again.โ€ โ€œHm.โ€ He grunted out a breath. โ€œWhatโ€™s new.โ€

โ€œI think itโ€™s sexy.โ€ Sniffling, I lifted his hand to my mouth and kissed all of his torn knuckles. โ€œYouโ€™ve got the roughed-up bad boy look down to a tee.โ€

โ€œHowโ€™s my baby?โ€ โ€œStill cooking?โ€

โ€œHowโ€™s my other baby?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m okay, Joe,โ€ I breathed. โ€œWeโ€™re both fine.โ€

โ€œGood.โ€ His eyelid fluttered shut. โ€œI need you to be okay.โ€ โ€œIย amย okay, Joe.โ€

โ€œBoth of you.โ€

โ€œBoth of us are fine.โ€

โ€œI need it to stay that way,โ€ he whispered, giving my hand a squeeze. โ€œItโ€™s important to me.โ€

Desperately fighting down the urge I had to climb onto the bed and hold him, I stood up and hovered close instead. โ€œYouโ€™re important to us.โ€ Leaning down, I pressed a lingering kiss to his clammy forehead. โ€œYouโ€™re everything to us.โ€

โ€œI want the baby, queen.โ€ Sniffling, I nodded. โ€œI know, stud.โ€ โ€œI heard the heartbeat.โ€

โ€œYeah, you did.โ€ โ€œItโ€™s really in there.โ€ โ€œUh-huh.โ€

โ€œWe made a baby.โ€

โ€œYeah, Joe, we did.โ€ โ€œIโ€™m scared.โ€

โ€œI know you are. Itโ€™s okay.โ€

โ€œWhen can I get out of here, Aoif?โ€

โ€œThe doctors want to keep you in for a few days for observation,โ€ I explained, fingers trailing over his swollen face. โ€œWeโ€™re just waiting on a bed upstairs to become available.โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ he groaned, shaking his head. โ€œNo, no, fuck that. Iโ€™m going home.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re going to stay here,โ€ I warned, snatching up the hand he was attempting to use to pull his IV line out. โ€œYou have one hell of a concussion, Joe. The doctor explained it to me. Youย needย to be here, okay?โ€

โ€œI need to see Shannon.โ€

There it is.

โ€œShannon is fine,โ€ I tried to soothe, sinking down on the edge of his bed, as I gently pinned his hands to his chest to stop him from hurting himself. โ€œSheโ€™s being well looked after upstairs, okay?โ€

โ€œYeah, but she needs to see me,โ€ he tried to argue, voice croaky and raw. โ€œYou donโ€™t get it. I need to be there when she wakes up. Sheโ€™ll be scared. She wonโ€™t know what to say. I need to check on her.โ€

โ€œJoe.โ€ Cupping his face between my hands, I leaned in close and forced him to look at me. โ€œI promise you that Shannon isย fine.โ€ Pressing a soft kiss to the corner of his mouth, I avoided stitches on his swollen bottom lip, and mentally willed him to stop thinking about everyone else. โ€œYou trust me, donโ€™t you?โ€

He nodded slowly.

โ€œGood.โ€ I smoothed his hair back and kissed him again. โ€œThen trust me when I tell you that the best thing you can do for Shan is to rest up and heal.โ€

โ€œJoey?โ€ Marieโ€™s sorrowful voice came from behind the curtain, causing us both to stiffen. โ€œCan I speak to you?โ€

โ€œNo, no, no,โ€ he croaked out, snatching my hand up in his. โ€œI canโ€™t deal with her.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s okay,โ€ I whispered, nuzzling his good cheek with mine. โ€œIโ€™m here, Joe. Iโ€™ve got your back.โ€

โ€œFuck.โ€ Blowing out a pained breath, he relented with a stiff nod. โ€œOkay.โ€ โ€œCome in, Marie.โ€

The curtain was drawn back, and his mother appeared, looking every bit as small and frail as the last time Iโ€™d laid eyes on her.

โ€œJoey.โ€ Her eyes were sunken in her head, clearly swollen from crying, as she took an uncertain step towards us. โ€œAoife.โ€

โ€œMarie,โ€ I acknowledged coolly. My gaze flicked to the tall, dark-haired man standing behind her. The suit he was wearing looked too flashy to belong to a social worker, so I pegged him for a solicitor.

God knew she needed one.

โ€œOh, Joey, baby.โ€ Sniffling, his mother moved for his bed, but stopped when she realized that I had no intention of getting out of her way.

I couldnโ€™t if I wanted to.

Joey had a death grip on my hand.

โ€œHow are you feeling?โ€ Marie asked him. โ€œYour poor face.โ€ My boyfriend didnโ€™t respond.

He didnโ€™t move a muscle.

His face was void of all emotion as he continued to stare at the man standing behind his mother.

โ€œHey kid,โ€ the man said, tone thick with emotion, as he stared straight past me, attention riveted on my boyfriend. โ€œItโ€™s been a while.โ€

Itโ€™s been a while?

Brows furrowing, I swung my gaze on the man and studied his familiar face.

High cheekbones.

Dark brown hair.

Puffy swollen lips.

Eyes the color of midnight blue.

โ€œCrap,โ€ I strangled out, quickly putting two and two together and coming up with a big fat Darren. โ€œItโ€™s you.โ€

His attention flicked to me and I watched as a flicker of recognition flashed in his blue eyes. โ€œAnd itโ€™s you.โ€

I frowned, knowing full well that I had never met this man before in my life. โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œSo, you went there anyway and threw your hat in the ring, Joe?โ€ he mused, this time addressing my boyfriend. โ€œWell, no one could accuse you of being fleeting.โ€

โ€œSeriously.โ€ I blinked in confusion. โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œNever mind,โ€ Darren replied with a shake of his head. โ€œHow are you feeling, Joey?โ€

โ€œWhat are you doing here?โ€ Joey replied, tone cold and hard. โ€œWhat do you want?โ€

โ€œMam called me.โ€

โ€œWhat do you mean sheย calledย you?โ€ โ€œListen, Joe, I know thereโ€™s a lot ofโ€”โ€

โ€œWhat do you mean sheย calledย you, Darren?โ€ he repeated, tone laced with venom. โ€œWhat the fuck?โ€

โ€œBack up,โ€ I warned, taking a protective stance in front of my boyfriend when his brother moved to come closer. โ€œJust back right up, buddy.โ€

โ€œAoife, you need to stay out of this.โ€

โ€œHow do you know her name?โ€ Releasing my hand, Joey dragged himself into a sitting position, chest rising and falling quickly, as he glowered at his mother and brother like they were the enemy. โ€œHow the fuck does he know my girlfriendโ€™s name?โ€

โ€œI called him,โ€ his mother strangled out, pressing a hand to her chest.

โ€œYouย calledย him,โ€ Joey deadpanned. โ€œYou just called him up? So, you had his number all along?” he choked out, trembling. “For the past five and a half years? You were in contact with him and never told me.”

โ€œJoey, listen to meโ€”โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t fucking speak to me!โ€ my boyfriend roared, pointing a finger at his long-lost brother. โ€œDonโ€™t fucking look at me.โ€ Turning back to his mother, he hissed, “I understand why you couldnโ€™t tell Dad, and I get why you didnโ€™t tell the boys and Shannon. But me?โ€ His lip wobbled and I felt my heart crack when he asked, โ€œWhy couldnโ€™t you tellย me?”

โ€œIโ€™m sorry I didnโ€™t tell you,โ€ Marie tried to explain, but Joe was having none of it.

โ€œShut the fuck up!โ€ Hooking an arm around my waist, he pulled me closer, and I could feel just how badly his body was shaking. โ€œJust get the fuck out. Both of you.โ€

โ€œJoey, pleaseโ€”โ€

โ€œYou heard him,โ€ I snapped, holding a hand out to warn his mother off. โ€œLeave now.โ€

โ€œYou need to stay in your own lane here, Aoife,โ€ Darren said, giving me a cool look. โ€œI know you mean well, but this is a family matter.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t fucking speak to her like that, asshole,โ€ Joey was quick to jump to my defense. โ€œSheย isย my family.โ€

โ€œJoey,โ€ Marie sobbed. โ€œIโ€™m your mother.โ€

โ€œAnd sheโ€™s the mother of my kid. So, donโ€™t even think about pulling that card,โ€ he sneered. โ€œBecause she wins. Every damn time.โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€ Nodding vigorously, I folded my arms across my chest and gave his mam aย haย look.

โ€œThis isnโ€™t a pissing contest, ladies,โ€ Darren drawled. โ€œCan you please step out for a moment, while our mother has a word with her son?โ€

โ€œHell no I wonโ€™t step out,โ€ I spat, feeling my hackles rise. โ€œIโ€™m the one whoโ€™s been sitting by his bedside since he was admitted. Iโ€™m the one down as his next of kin because not one of you assholes decided to show up. Where the hell were either one of you?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not fair,โ€ Marie wailed. โ€œShannon wasโ€ฆโ€

โ€œDonโ€™t talk to me about whatโ€™s fair,โ€ I came close to screaming. โ€œLook at his face.โ€

โ€œAoife, please.โ€œ

โ€œLook at his face,โ€ I repeated, voice rising right along with my temper. โ€œTake a good fucking look, Marie. Because thatโ€™s your son.โ€ Furious, I pointed to my boyfriend. “Heโ€™s just as much your child as Shannon or the boys orย him.โ€

โ€œI know heโ€™s my child.โ€

โ€œThen fucking act like it!โ€ I hissed, narrowing my eyes in disgust. โ€œStop treating him like an afterthought. Heโ€™s not a fucking afterthought, okay? You canโ€™t just show up here and lay down the law after not checking in on him once! It doesnโ€™t work like that, and I wonโ€™t stand by and let you sink your twisted claws any deeper into him than you already haveโ€”โ€

โ€œMolloy.โ€

โ€œNo, Joe, she needs to hear this.โ€ Swallowing down a scream, I blinked away my temper tears and pointed a finger at his mother. โ€œHeโ€™s the best damn thing that came out of your marriage and youโ€™re too stupid to see it. Heโ€™s not your bodyguard. Heโ€™s not your bank account. Heโ€™s not your babysitter. Heโ€™s not your fucking husband. Heโ€™s yourย child. Heโ€™s yourย son!โ€ Furious, I turned my glare on his brother. โ€œAnd as for you? Well, I donโ€™t really know you that well yet, but Iโ€™m feeling like this is aย fuck youย kind of moment. So, fuck you.โ€

โ€œAre you quite finished your outburst?โ€ the oldest Lynch asked calmly, arching a brow. โ€œBecause Iโ€™m not leaving until I speak to my brother in private.โ€

โ€œThen I guess weโ€™re all staying,โ€ I shot back, unyielding. โ€œMolloy.โ€ I felt Joeyโ€™s hand on my waist. โ€œItโ€™s okay.โ€

Feeling panicked, I swung around to look at him. โ€œYou donโ€™t have to talk

to them, Joe. Do you hear me? You donโ€™t need to listen to another word she says.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s okay,โ€ he whispered, giving my hip a reassuring squeeze. โ€œGo home and get something to eat. Iโ€™ll be fine here.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not leaving you.โ€ โ€œIโ€™ll be fine.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not going, Joe.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m going to have to talk to them at some stage.โ€ โ€œBut Iโ€”โ€

โ€œItโ€™s all good, baby. Just give me a few hours, okay? Iโ€™ll be fine.โ€

No, this wasnโ€™t good at all. This was allย bad.

I didnโ€™t want these people anywhere near him.

โ€œJoe.โ€ Chewing on my lip, I implored him with my eyes to not do this. โ€œAre you sure?โ€

He didnโ€™t look sure.

He didnโ€™t look like he was in any fit state to handle these people. Still, he nodded stiffly and released me.

โ€œFine. Itโ€™s three o clock now,โ€ I squeezed out, briefly glancing at the screen of my phone before shoving it back in my pocket. โ€œIโ€™ll go home and have a shower and Iโ€™ll be back at six, okay?โ€

โ€œTake your time,โ€ he replied. โ€œItโ€™s all good.โ€ No, it wasnโ€™t.

Everything inside of me screamedย wrong, wrong, wrong.

But what could I do?

I couldnโ€™t exactly force his mother and brother out of the hospital, and if Joey wanted to speak to them, then I couldnโ€™t stop him.

Even if I really, really didnโ€™t want him anywhere near these people.

โ€œI love you,โ€ I said, ignoring his family, as I leaned in close and pressed a kiss to his lips. โ€œIโ€™ll be back.โ€
