JOEY
โJOE?โ
I could feel her hands on my face. โJoey, baby?โ
Her smell was all around me. โBreathe, baby.โ
Her hands were on my face. โJust breathe.โ
I couldnโt feel my body. I couldnโt feel anything.
I knew I was trying to sit up. I could feel my legs kicking the blankets away from my waist, but my head wasnโt complying.
My brain wasnโt working. Everything was fucking broken.
โMolloy.โ My voice was slurred. My lips brushed her neck as I spoke. โWhere is she?โ
โSheโs okay.โ She pulled me in tighter, wrapping me up in a tight cocoon of heat and warmth. โShannonโs okay, Joe. Sheโs out of surgery and
everything went great. The boys are fine, too. Itโs all good, baby.โ
Slumping forward, I let myself lean against my girlfriend, knowing that I needed to not put my weight on her, but unable to stop myself.
โThe baby…โ
โThe babyโs fine.โ Her lips were on my forehead. โWeโre both fine.โ She was the only thing that felt real in this moment.
She was here and she was real.
I could smell her, touch her, feel her.
Just her.
โWhat time is it?โ
โItโs about half past six.โ โWhat day is it?โ
โItโs Sunday morning, Joe.โ
โMy head,โ I groaned, burying my face in her neck when pain spliced through me. โMy eyes.โ
โShh, itโs okay. Donโt try to stand up.โ I felt her lips on my temple and then her hand was on the back of my head, fingers gently stroking my scalp. โJust stay on the trolley. Iโve got you, Joe.โ
The trolley?
I couldnโt remember getting onto a trolley to begin with. โWhere am I?โ
โYouโre in your own private cubicle in the A&E.โ Another kiss found my temple. โYouโve been in and out for a while now.โ
โI have?โ
โUh-huh. Youโve had a lot of tests done. A CT scan, some x-rays, and an MRI.โ Her breath hitched and I could hear the cry she was trying to bury. โBut youโre going to be fine, okay? I wonโt let anything else happen to you.โ
โDonโt cry, Molloy.โ Nuzzling her neck, I tried to raise my hands to her face to comfort her, but they felt so fucking heavy that I only managed to hook them loosely around her waist. โYou know it kills me when you cry.โ
โIโm not crying.โ Sniffling, she pressed another kiss to my head before cradling my face to her chest. โItโs all good, Joe.โ
โShannon?โ
โSheโs fine,โ Molloy was quick to soothe. โI already told you, remember?โ
Nah.
I didnโt remember shit.
โI love you,โ I slurred. โThatโs all I remember.โ
โI love you, too,โ she replied, voice thick with emotion. โMore than youโll ever know.โ
โFuck, my eyes,โ I groaned, wincing when the brightness around me became too much. โWhereโs Seany?โ
โHeโs at home with Nanny Murphy.โ Another kiss. โSo are Ollie and Tadhg. They are allย fine.โ
โTadhg was, ahโฆโ Shaking my head, I gripped at her waist, needing to hold onto her in this moment because my body felt like it was falling apart. โHe had a knife.โ
โHeโs not hurt, Joe,โ she whispered. โShh, baby. Donโt say anything else, okay? Just wait until you feel better. Weโll talk about it then, okay?โ
Nodding weakly, I groaned when the pressure in my head grew to epic proportions. โAm I wearing pants?โ
โNo, baby, youโre not. Youโre wearing your boxers and a hospital gown.
They had to take off your clothes for the MRI.โ โAw fuck.โ
โWhy?โ
โIโve a nodge of hash in my jeans,โ I mumbled drowsily. โI could really use a smoke.โ
โOh, Joe.โ A broken laugh escaped her. โTrust you to think about getting high in your condition.โ
โCan I come in?โ a strange voice asked and suddenly we were bathed in an abnormal amount of light as the sound of a curtain moving filled my ears. โAre you next of kin?โ
โYeah, I am.โ
โIs his mother or a guardian around?โ โNo. Itโs just me.โ
โI can come back when his motherโโ
โHeโs over eighteen,โ I heard her say. โIโm down on his paperwork as next of kin. Heโs my babyโs father. Weโre a family.โ Cupping my face between her hands, she lifted my face to hers. โCan you see me, Joe?โ
Wincing from the pain the bright lights were causing me, I forced myself to focus on the only face Iโd been able to see since I was twelve. โMolloy?โ
โThe doctorโs here, Joe.โ She smiled and my vision blurred in and out before settling on her green eyes. โWeโre going to talk to the doctor, okay?โ
โOkay.โ I forced myself to nod and then winced in pain. โWhatever you say, queen.โ
โHis MRI results show three separate linear fractures to the skull,โ the voice was telling her. โHe has a nasal fracture, an orbital fracture, and hairline fracture to his left zygomatic bone.โ
โZig-o-what-ic?โ I heard Molloy croak out. โIn plain English please, doctor.โ
โAside from three hairline fractures on Josephโs skull, he also has a broken cheekbone, a broken nose, a broken eye socket, and a grade three concussion,โ I heard the man say. โHis MRI also showed up several old contusions, extensive damage to his humerus not to mention signs of multiple metaphyseal-epiphyseal fractures that seem to have healed remarkably well without causing any major deformation or debilitation to his skeletal frame.โ
โI donโt know what any of that means,โ I heard my girlfriend strangle out. โWhat do you mean theyโve healed remarkably well?โ
โMay I be frank?โ
โYeah, yeah, be frank.โ โJoseph, may I be frank?โ
โBe whoever the fuck you want, doc. Iโm not your keeper,โ I mumbled,
enjoying the feel of Molloyโs fingers in my hair so much, I leaned in closer and rested my chin on her shoulder. โYou be Frank and Iโll be Joey.โ
โNo, Joe, he meantโฆ Never mind. Go ahead, doctor.โ โIn cases like Josephโs โโ
โJoey,โ I grumbled. โItโs Joey, Frank.โ
โIn cases like Joeyโs, when patients present under these kinds of circumstances, thereโs generally a long history of domestic violence, and to break it down for you, your partnerโs test results reveal a pattern of child abuse that clearly stretches back to infancy.โ
A pained sob escaped my girlfriend. โInfancy?โ
โNo, no, no,โ I tried to coax, nuzzling her. โDonโt be crying, Molloy.โ โIโm okay, Joe,โ she whispered, stroking me. โHow can you tell, doctor?โ โThe results of his scans clearly show evidence of malunion fractures that
went untreated and healed improperly. Thereโs very clear evidence of a
poorly healed mid-shaft fracture to his right humerus. Unfortunately, this is something commonly scene in infants under the age of eighteen months who have been exposed to physical abuse. In your partnerโs case, while his bones may have healed over time, many of the injuries his body sustained left residual shadows. Or blemishes, if you will.โ
โYouโre saying this has been happening since he was a baby?โ
โIโm saying thereโs evidence that leads me to believe that your partner has sustained a tremendous level of physical abuse over an extended period of time.โ
โThat leads back to when he was aย baby?โ โItโs possible.โ
โOh my god.โ Molloy heaved out a sob and pulled me closer. โOh my
god!โ
โQuite frankly, itโs a miracle heโs sitting here.โ
