Redeeming 6 (Boys of Tommen, #4)

AOIFE

โ€œWHERE ARE YOU GOING?โ€ย I asked my father on Saturday morning, watching from my bedroom doorway as he thundered down the stairs with a furious scowl etched on his face. โ€œDad?โ€

โ€œWork,โ€ my father roared over his shoulder. โ€œSo, you better tell that boyfriend of yours to get his hole out of your bed!โ€

Oh crap.

โ€œJoeyโ€™s not here.โ€

โ€œI know he stayed over.โ€

True.ย โ€œHe left a while ago.โ€

โ€œWell, then, letโ€™s hope heโ€™s at the garage, because if heโ€™s not then he better start looking for somewhere else to work because Iโ€™m done with the bullshit.โ€

โ€œDad, wait!โ€ Hurrying down the stairs after him, I chased him all the way outside to where he had parked his van. โ€œDonโ€™t hit him, okay?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not going to hit him.โ€ โ€œYou swear?โ€

โ€œIf I was going to hit the lad, I would have done it the other night,โ€ my father grumbled as he climbed into his van. โ€œGo inside out of the cold before you get sick on top of everything else.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t fire him either,โ€ I pleaded, holding onto the door of his van so he couldnโ€™t close it. โ€œPlease, Dad. He needs his job.โ€

โ€œOf course he fucking needs his job,โ€ my father snapped. โ€œHe has a child on the way to pay for, doesnโ€™t he?โ€

Clearly sleeping on the news had done my father no favors. He seemed angrier now than when he found out.

โ€œBut you were supportive the other day when the Lynchโ€””

โ€œBecause youโ€™re my daughter, dammit. Of course, I support ya. Iโ€™ll always show a united front for your benefit. But Iโ€™m not happy about it, Aoife,โ€ he growled, cranking the engine. โ€œMy child is having a child while sheโ€™s still a child with another fucking child! I am not okay with any of this, but I donโ€™t exactly have much of a say in the matter now, do I? Not when the horse has already bolted. No point in wringing the ladโ€™s neck after the fact, now is there? Canโ€™t exactly go back in time and put a condom on the little prickโ€™s dick now, can I?โ€

I didnโ€™t have an answer for him, so I let go of the door and watched as he slammed it shut before tearing off. Hurrying back inside, I raced up the stairs to grab my phone and warn my boyfriend that my father was on the warpath.

Code red. Code red. Avoid the garage at all costs. Dadโ€™s out for blood.

Sorry, I bounced without waking ya. Had to check on the kids before work. How are you feeling? x

Me? Iโ€™m fine. Itโ€™s you Iโ€™m worried about. Are the boys okay?

Joe?

And Shan? Aw crap.

All good. Still not back from Dublin. x

Yeah, I know. x

Just steer clear of your house, Joe. You can crash at mine for a few days. I donโ€™t want you in harmโ€™s way.

Joe? Joey!

Itโ€™s all good. Donโ€™t worry. Iโ€™m at work now, so Iโ€™ll talk to you later. x

Seriously, Joe, about my dad. I saw a pair of rusty pliers on the passenger seat of his van. I think he might be considering castrating you.

I can handle Tony. Just mind yourself, okay? Donโ€™t go climbing any walls or any wild shit like that. Iโ€™ll see you tonight. x

Aoife: I love you. x

Joey: I love you back. x

โ€œWELL, I have to hand it to him,โ€ Mam said when she walked into the kitchen after dropping off my fatherโ€™s lunch at the garage. โ€œYour babyโ€™s father is brave.โ€

I sprang off my chair. โ€œJoe?โ€

โ€œMm-hm.โ€ Mam nodded. โ€œHe actually showed up to work.โ€ โ€œIn one piece?โ€

Mam grimaced. โ€œRelatively.โ€

โ€œOh my god, Mam. Please tell me that Dad didnโ€™t hit him.โ€œ

โ€œAccording to your father, he threw a wrench at Joeyโ€™s head, but had no hand in the black eye heโ€™s sporting.โ€

โ€œOh my god,โ€ I cried, sinking back down, and dropping my head in my hands. โ€œKill me now.โ€

โ€œYour father will calm down,โ€ she replied, tone assuring. โ€œTheyโ€™ll be okay, love. Theyโ€™ll patch it up in time. Theyโ€™ve been working together for a very long time now. Theyโ€™re practically an old married couple.โ€

โ€œYou should have heard him this morning, Mam,โ€ I groaned, watching my mother as she whizzed around the kitchen. โ€œHe was so hostile.โ€

โ€œYour fatherโ€™s not hostile, love, heโ€™s heartbroken.โ€

โ€œWell, thatโ€™s even worse,โ€ I strangled out. โ€œI broke his heart. Thatโ€™s why he avoided me like the plague when he came home from work last night. He hates me.โ€

โ€œCan we talk?โ€ Kev asked, walking into the kitchen, hands in the air. โ€œCivilly.โ€

โ€œKev,โ€ Mam sighed wearily. โ€œI donโ€™t think nowโ€™s the time for that.โ€

โ€œWe need to sort this out, Aoife,โ€ he pushed, ignoring our mother. โ€œCome on. Letโ€™s just sit down and hash it out. We canโ€™t go around ignoring each other.โ€

โ€œYou can talk to him all you want,โ€ I told Mam, as I jerked to my feet and grabbed my car keys off the table. โ€œIโ€™m going to Caseyโ€™s.โ€

โ€œAoife,โ€ Kev groaned when I brushed past him. โ€œPlease.โ€ โ€œFuck off, Kevin.โ€
