JOEY
WE HAD BARELY WARMEDย our seats in Irish when the bell of the intercom sounded. The school secretaryโs voice pierced through every speaker in the school saying, โCould Joseph Lynch and Aoife Molloy please report to the principalโs office immediately.โ
โCan they expel him for knocking her up?โ Alec asked from the desk beside ours, and if it wasnโt for the fact that he was genuinely serious, I would have decked him. โBecause we have a match coming up and weโre bolloxed without him.โ
โDonโt think so, Al,โ Podge chuckled beside him. โBut you never know.โ
Gathering my books, I tossed them into my bag and stood up, ignoring theย ooohsย andย oh shitsย coming from our fellow classmates.
Walking over to the classroom door, I yanked it open and waited for my partner in crime to hurry her ass up and join me.
โGood luck,โ Alec called out, giving me two enthusiastic thumbs up, when Molloy joined me in the doorway. โPlead the fifth.โ
โWhat do you think Mr. Nyhanโs going to say?โ Molloy asked, reaching for my hand, as she fell into step beside me. โIs he even allowed to bring it up to us?โ
โHow the fuck am I supposed to know?โ
โWell, youโre the one who spends most of his time in the office.โ โOnly because youโre too sneaky to get caught.โ
โWell, Iโve clearly been caught this time.โ โFunny.โ
โWhat if he shouts at me, Joe?โ
โIf he shouts at you, Iโll break his nose.โ
โDonโt break his nose,โ she hurried to say. โI need you to not get expelled, okay? Or arrested. Yeah, Iโm going to need you toย notย do both of those things.โ
โFine. Iโll try my best.โ
โOh god, I feel sick,โ she groaned when we reached the familiar frosted glass door of the office. โCan we just sneak out and leave early?โ
โNo.โ Shaking my head, I pushed the door open and had to physically lift her inside. โCome on, Molloy. Letโs just get it over with.โ
โYour mothers are in the office with Mr. Nyhan. You can go straight in,โ Betty announced, not looking up from her computer, as she tapped furiously on the keyboard in front of her. โGood luck.โ
โWhose mother?โ โBoth of your mothers.โ
โMy mamโs in there?โ I glared at the secretary, who I was on a first name
basis with. โWhy?โ
โWhy donโt you go on in there and find out, Joseph,โ old Betty shot back, not missing a beat. โYou know which door it is.โ
Yeah, I did.
Third on the right.
โGood luck, Joe,โ Molloy whispered, giving my hand a small squeeze. โLove you.โ
โYeah.โ I blew out a breath and held the office door open for her. โRight back at ya, Molloy.โ
BEYOND UNCOMFORTABLE, I sat at one side of the meeting table next to my mother, while Molloy and Trish sat opposite us.
On either end of the table sat Miss Lane, our year head, and Mr. Nyhan, our principal, who were doing a fantastic job of talkingย atย us rather thanย toย us.
It wasnโt like Molloy and I were the ones immediately impacted by the pregnancy or anything. Oh no, it was far more pertinent to address our mothers when making decisions on our futures.
Dicks.
Unable to put any amount of pressure on my back, I leaned forward instead, resting one elbow on the table, while dropping my free hand on my lap.
When our principal asked Mam a question, and she turned to give him her full attention. I took the opportunity to discreetly drop the hand I was resting on my lap into her handbag that was sitting on the floor between our chairs. Barely breathing, I rummaged around inside until my fingers probed the familiar circular pill bottle.
Closing my hand around it, I quickly slipped it into my pocket, feeling a rush of relief fill my body at the prospect of not having to face into another
night of hell at home.
Zoning their voices out, and the unsettling urge I had to escape to the bathroom and pop a few C2s, I concentrated all of my attention on my girlfriend, who was nervously chewing on the nail on her baby finger, while her wide-eyed gaze flicked between the four adults in the room.
โBy which time youโll be how far along in your pregnancy, Aoife?โ Molloyโs guilt-ridden eyes snapped to Mr. Nyhan. โHm?โ Immediately by back was up.
She didnโt need to feel guilty about a damn thing. This was on me.
โHow far along in your pregnancy will you be when you sit the leaving
cert in June?โ
โOh.โ Her cheeks flamed and she roughly cleared her throat before casting a nervous glance in my direction. โWhat date in June?โ
โThe seventh.โ
โOh.โ Another deep swallow. โI think Iโll be twenty-five weeks by then?โ โYou think?โ
โYeah, uh, well, you see, I donโt know for sure.โ โYou donโt know for sure?โ
โWell, I havenโt had my dating scan yet,โ she hurried to explain. โItโs today, actually.โ
โWhy are you pushing her on this?โ I snapped, irritated that he was interrogating her. โShe already answered you. Give it a fucking rest, will ya? Jesus.โ
โJoey,โ Mam snapped, nudging me with her elbow while Molloy gave me a grateful smile.
Choosing to ignore my outburst, which, to be honest, I was mildly disappointed about, Mr. Nyhan turned his attention to Mam. โI know you and Teddy have your hands full with this one, Marie, and I hate to bring it up during such testing times, but I have to ask about Shannon. I sincerely hope that she is settling in well at Tommen.โ
โSheโs doing very well there, thank you,โ Mam replied quietly. โAnd as for my son, heโs doing a lot better at school since Christmas.โ
โYes, well.โ Not bothering to finish his sentence, he turned back to Trish. โPlease know that while here at Ballylaggin Community School, we strongly discourage student relationships, we will not turn your daughter away in her hour of need.โ
โTurn me away?โ Molloy choked out, brows furrowing. โWhat does that mean?โ
โHer hour of need?โ I chimed in, shaking my head. โWhat in the hell kind of statement is that to make?โ
โJoey,โ Mam snapped again. โEnough.โ
โSheโs not riding into school on a donkey, looking for shelter,โ I growled. โSheโs looking for an education, not gold, frankincense, and myrrh.โ
Mam dropped her head in her hands and sighed wearily. โOh, Joey.โ
โThereโs a lot to be taken into account here, Joseph,โ Miss Lane interjected in a haughty tone. โFirst and foremost, thereโs the matter of whether or not the schoolโs insurance covers having a pregnant student on school grounds.”
โWhat are you saying?โ Aoife croaked out, paling. โInsurance not covering me?โ She looked to her mother. โAm I being expelled?โ
โYou areย notย kicking her out of school,โ I snarled, sitting straight up. โThis isnโt the nineteen fucking fifties. Thereโs no goddamn way that Iโm going to allow you to shun her like sheโs some sort of scarlet woman. If anything, Iโm the scarlet fucking man.โ
โJoey.โ
โSeriously. Iโm as pregnant as she is.โ โJoseph, please.โ
โWhat?โ I demanded. โItโs true. Iโm the father. I put that baby in her. If you want to lay blame, lay it at my door, not hers. She has just over two months of school left, and sheโs finishing it out. Over my dead body are you taking that away from her.โ
โJoey, calm down. Aoife, just breathe. Nobody is kicking anyone out,โ Trish tried to soothe, eyes locked on Mr. Nyhan. โItโs discrimination, not to mention completely against the law, to exclude a student from attending school on the sole basis of her being pregnant. Isnโt that right, Eddie?โ
โWell, yes, of course it is,โ the prick tried to back pedal. โNobody is suggesting that your daughter be removed from school.โ
โJust like nobody suggested that Samantha McGuiness be removed from school, or Amy O Donovan, or Denise Scully. All girls from my terrace,โ I sneered, giving him a look that saidย yeah, asshole, I know how it works. โIf thatโs the case, then explain to me what her angle is when she says the schoolโs insurance wonโt cover Aoife being here?โ
โI didnโt say it wouldnโt. I was just sayingโโ
โYou were just trying to intimidate my girlfriend into going quietly, without making a splash for the school,โ I corrected, cutting her off. โYeah, I know your game. I didnโt come down in the last shower. I know how much easier it is for the school board when pregnant girls disappear from the roll book. Difference is, those girls had to do it alone,โ I paused to point at Molloy before adding, โAoife has me, and I have no intention of going quietly.โ
If I could do nothing else for her, then I could stand in front of her and take the pressure, the disappointment, the pain. I could take the blows for her, and I would.
I sat there, back poker straight, muscles locked tight with tension, and took their disappointment on the chin, knowing that she was in no fit state to take another blow.
โJoey.โ Mam placed a hand on my bopping knee and squeezed. โPlease settle down, will you?โ
โYes,โ Mr. Nyhan added, giving me a glaring look. โThereโs no one fighting you on this.โ
โOnly because I made a preemptive strike,โ I muttered under my breath. โWhat are we even doing here?โ I looked around at their faces. โAoifeโs pregnant. Iโm the father. Sheโs dueย afterย we finish school, so I really donโt understand the need for this bullshit meeting.โ
