AOIFE
โWELL,ย you sure know how to make a splash,โ Podge said on Friday morning, when he joined me at our usual lunch table in the canteen for small break. โThe whole place is talking about you, Aoif.โ
Yes, the entire student body at BCSย wasย talking about me.
Some of the bolder ones were even talkingย toย me, asking me for answers to questions that were nobodyโs business.
Hell, even one of the substitute teachers asked me if it was true. Worst of all, Joey wasnโt here.
He hadnโt shown up.
โIs he here yet?โ I croaked out, not bothering to acknowledge the obvious. โWas he outside when you went for a smoke at the start of break?โ
Grimacing, Podge shook his head. โNot yet. But heโll be here.โ
I glanced at the clock on the wall, feeling my anxiety swell. โItโs ten past eleven, Podge. Heโs already after missing the first three classes. School ends at twelve. We only have one class left after lunch.โ
โSomething must have come up at home.โ My boyfriendโs best friend offered me another uncomfortable shrug. โListen, I know it looks bad, but
thereโs no way Lynchy would leave ya to deal with the mob on your own unless it wasnโt important.โ
โYeah.โ Feeling sick to my stomach, I drummed my fingers on the desk, and fought back the urge to scream. โThatโs what Iโm worried about.โ
Because I had enough faith in my boyfriend to know that he wouldnโt skip out on me. Joey was a lot of things but he was no coward. Never in his life had he backed down from responsibility, which only caused the anxiety festering inside of me to swell.
Mam had called the Gards last night and reported Teddy. It didnโt take a genius to know that his absence at school was linked to it.
โThatโs her,โ a group of baby first years whispered, as they hurried past our table, huddled close together. โThe pregnant sixth year.โ
โIs the guy sheโs sitting with the father?โ
โI heard she doesnโt know who the father is.โ
Damn Miss Lane for giving Casey lunchtime detention. It wasnโt so bad when she was with me during class. She had a mouth like a sailor and an answer for every eejit stupid enough to approach me in the hallway. That mouth had landed her in detention, though, which meant that I was alone and bleeding in the shark tank.
I was grateful to Podge for coming to sit with me. Every other one of my so-called friends were treating me like pregnancy was contagious. Aside from Casey, it was the boys in my class who were being kind.
The girls wereย awful.
I hadnโt been summoned to the office for the dreaded talk yet, but I knew there was only time in it before the rumors of my wayward ways reached our
principalโs ears.
โHowโd Lynchy take the news?โ Podge asked, dragging me back to the present. โI tried to call him a few times, but he didnโt answer.โ
โBetter than could be expected.โ I blew out a shaky breath. โEspecially after how he found out.โ
โShitty behavior out of your brother,โ he offered. โTelling Ricey before Lynchy knew. Jesus, thatโs low.โ
โDonโt,โ I groaned, still feeling sick at the thought. โIโm so done with Kev.โ
โSo, whatโs the plan?โ I blinked. โThe plan?โ
โYeah.โ Podge nodded. โAre you going to have it?โ
โYes,โ I bit out, feeling oddly defensive. โObviously.โ
โGood for you.โ Nodding to himself, Podge scooped up a spoonful of yoghurt and popped it into his mouth. โHeโll do right by ya.โ
โYeah,โ I whispered. โI know he will. Itโs justโฆ Itโs just a huge mess, you know?โ
โI donโt want to even think about it.โ โI donโt blame you.โ
โListen.โ Reaching across the lunch table, he pressed a hand on my shoulder and gave me a supportive squeeze. โYouโre not the first to have a baby off a lad in school, Aoif,โ he offered. โAnd you sure as shit wonโt be the last. Just ignore them. Youโll be old news soon enough.โ
โYeah, Podge, thanks and all,โ I mumbled, feeling my cheeks burn from the intense stares I was receiving. โBut somehow I doubt this is going away any time soon.โ
โHey, sexy-legs, I slapped the shit out of your brother just now,โ Alec declared, sinking down on the table in front of us. โHope ya donโt mind.โ
My eyes widened. โYou did?โ
โOf course.โ He winked. โLynchyโs on his last warning, so he couldnโt do it. And I couldnโt have Brains doing my favorite girl dirty like that.โ
โWhere is he now?โ
โWho? Brains?โ Alec shrugged. โOn the phone to your mammy, I suspect.โ
โAw, Al…โ I couldnโt stop the smile from spreading across my face, thrilled that little shit got put in his place. โThanks, buddy.โ
โAnytime,โ he replied with a grin. โAnd just so you know, even with a big belly on ya, youโll still be completely rideable.โ
โSmooth, Al,โ Podge chuckled. โWhat every girl wants to hear.โ โI call dibs on godfather,โ Alec chimed in.
โYou canโt call dibs on godfather, asshole.โ โI just did.โ
โWell, it doesnโt count,โ Podge huffed. โIf anyoneโs going to be godfather, itโs going to be me.โ
โNope, see, sexy-legs is going to give devil-tits the nod as godmother, which gives Lynchy free rein over who his spawnโs godfather will be.โ
โYeah, because referencing our best friendโs unborn child as spawn is something a godfather would say.โ
โListen, ginger-pubes, itโs happening, so back the fuck off and donโt even think about trying to steal my thunder on this.โ
Podge shrugged. โYeah, well, Iโd rather have ginger pubes than a crab infested cock.โ
Alec gasped. โI donโt have crabs.โ โAnymore.โ
โIย neverย had crabs.โ He narrowed his eyes. โI was scratching because I
shaved my balls and the itch was fucking horrendous!โ I laughed. โYou shaved your balls, Al?โ
โOh yeah, Al here is big on the man-scaping,โ Podge chimed in, as the bell sounded around us, signaling the end of small break.
โWhat can I say?โ Alec jumped up and offered me a lopsided grin. โIโm a gentleman.โ
โDo you want to walk with us, Aoif?โ Podge asked, rising to his feet. โWeโre all in Irish with Dineen next.โ
โIโll catch up with you guys,โ I said, waving them both off. โI need to pee.โ
โKeep that head up, sexy-legs,โ Alec called over his shoulder as he sauntered out of the canteen with Podge. โAnd keep those legs closed until my god-child is fully cooked.โ
โThanks, Al.โ I sighed heavily, ignoring the gawks and stares I was receiving. โThanks a lot, buddy.โ
Iย WASย in coming out of the bathroom, on my way to Irish, when my brother stopped me in the hallway. โWe need to talk.โ
Dutifully ignoring him, I sidestepped him and kept walking.
โAoife, stop.โ He caught ahold of my arm and pulled me back to him. โPlease. We need to talk about this.โ
โWhatโs wrong, Kev?โ I snapped, begrudgingly falling into step alongside him as we walked down the corridor towards my classroom. โAre you blaming me for your busted lip, too?โ
โYour boyfriendโs henchman hit me.โ
โYeah, well, snitches get stitches, asshole.โ
โIโm sorry, okay?โ Holding his hands up in front of me, my brother tried to reason with a part of my heart that wasnโt there anymore. Not for him, at least. โI know what I did was shitty, okay? It was a really bad thing to do, Aoif. I get that now.โ
โToo little, too late.โ
โAoife, please?โ He sighed heavily. โCome on.โ
โNo. Youโve heard what people are saying about me,โ I replied flatly, stopping outside of my classroom door. โYouโve seen how theyโve been treating me. You cultivated that, Kev. You orchestrated this whole damn thing. So, shove your apology up your ass, because it doesnโt fix anything for me.โ
โWhat you said yesterday about Joey? You were right,โ he admitted, scrubbing his jaw with his hand. โIย donโtย like him. Heย doesย threaten me. Iย didย do it to hurt him.โ
He wasnโt telling me anything I didnโt already know.
โBut I didnโt take into account what my actions would do to you,โ he added, sounding genuinely remorseful. โI didnโtย think, period.โ
โWhat you did canโt be fixed with an apology,โ I replied, unwilling to bend. โYou canโt detonate a bomb on someoneโs life and then say oops when everything is blown to hell.โ
โHowโs the uncle-to-be?โ Paul said, when he stepped out of our classroom. Slinging an arm around my brotherโs shoulder, he smiled cruelly at me, while addressing my brother. โAlright, Kev?โ
Looking embarrassed, my brother shrugged awkwardly before muttering, โAlright, Ricey?โ
โOh, bog off, Paul,โ I growled, just about done with his bullshit. โIโm trying to have a private conversation with my brother.โ
โPrivate?โ He sneered at me like I was a piece of shit on his shoe. โThereโs not a whole pile private about you, now is there, Aoife?โ
Glaring up at him, I gave him the finger. โScrew you.โ
โI told you that heโd ruin you,โ he pushed cruelly. โAnd now look at the state youโre in.โ His gaze trailed over me, lingering on my stomach before he shook his head. โYouโre already getting fat.โ
โRicey,โ my brother tried to defend. โLeave her alone.โ It was a pitiful attempt, and once put under the pressure of Paulโs stare, he crumbled, shoulders slumping.
โWhat do you care, lad?โ Paul laughed. โYou said it yourself; your sisterโs a fucking slut.โ
I cast a glare to my brother, who had the good grace to bow his head in shame.
โYou think I care about your opinion, Paul?โ I shot back, determined to defend myself against this assholeโs taunting. โThe best thing I ever did was get away from you.โ
โNo, that was the best thing you ever did forย me,โ he sneered. โIt was the worst thing you ever did for yourself, because now all youโll ever be is the mother of that junkie scumbagโs little bastard.โ
โSay it again.โ
The breath left my body in a dizzy rush when a familiar menacing voice filled my ears.
My shoulders sagged and I honestly felt like I was about to collapse from the surge of relief that rocketed through my body.
โSay it again, asshole,โ Joey repeated, coming up to stand behind me.
Tossing his hurley and helmet on the floor, he let his schoolbag fall off his shoulder, and hooked one strong arm around my waist before backing me up against his hard chest. โI dare ya.โ
Shivering when his hand smoothed over the small swell of my stomach, I felt like crying when his thumb gently moved up and down.
โThis is the part where you run,โ I told my asshole ex. โFast.โ
My brother opened his mouth to speak, but Joey got there first. โYou should listen to your sister.โ
It was almost comical how quickly both boys took off, bolting off in opposite directions.
โYeah, youย shouldย run,โ I called after my brother, thoroughly enjoying his discomfort, as I leaned against my boyfriendโs chest. โYou little bitch.โ
โIโm so fucking sorry Iโm late,โ Joey muttered when they were out of earshot. โI overslept.โ
โIโm just glad youโre here,โ I replied, turning in his arms. โI didnโt think you were going to show โ what theย hellย happened to your face?โ
My mouth fell open and I gaped at the horrific bruising and swelling on the left side of his face.
โJesus Christ, Joe.โ I reached up to touch him. โYour cheek.โ
โYeah, I think itโs broken,โ he muttered, gently batting my hand away, as he reached for his bag and hurley. โDonโt touch it, okay? Itโs tender as fuck.โ
โBroken?โ I swallowed the lump in my throat as my heart cracked clean open.
He took another beating from his father. Another broken bone.
Another chip of his heart that would never be pieced back together.
โHe did this to you.โ My voice cracked. โBecause of me? Because of the baby?โ
โNo, not because of the baby,โ he replied in a soft tone. โBecause heโs a prick.โ He opened the classroom door and gestured to me to go first. โThis isnโt on you.โ
โAnd what time do you call this?โ Mr. Dineen demanded when we walked into class.
โSorry weโre late, sir,โ I declared before the teacher could go in on my boyfriend like he usually would. โWeโre having a bit of a crisis.โ
โA crisis?โ
โMorning sickness,โ some asshole fake-coughed from the back of the class, evoking a chorus of wolf-whistles and ooohs.
โRight, well, Iโll let you off just this once,โ our teacher replied, cheeks reddening, as he gestured for us to take our seats.
Hurrying to the back of the class, I took my seat in the back row and watched as Joey waited at Mr. Dineenโs desk for him to sign his red book.
On his way back to our desk, his movements were stiff and rigid and I knew all too well that the marks on his face werenโt the only ones his father put on his body.
My heart cracked at the thought.
โJoe,โ I whispered, when he carefully lowered himself onto the seat beside mine.
โItโs all good, Molloy.โ He tossed his hurley and helmet on floor at his feet, before turning to give me his full attention. โIโm fine.โ His green eyes were warm and full of affection when he leaned in close and whispered, โHow are you feeling?โ
โIโm fine.โ
โYeah?โ He slipped his hand under the desk and squeezed my thigh. โWell, you look good, baby.โ
How he could be so good to me, so considerate and caring of my feelings, when he was going through hell, was beyond me.
โI love you,โ I whispered, covering his hand with mine. โSo much.โ
โI know.โ Blowing out a pained breath, he entwined his fingers with mine. โI know, Molloy.โ
โItโs bad enough that youโre both late to my class, but you have the nerve to have a full-blown conversation,โ Mr. Dineen barked, glowering at us. โJoseph, would you care to tell the class what you two are whispering about? In your native tongue, if you will, since I have spent the past six years attempting to teach you the language.โ
โCeart go leor, a mhรบinteoir,โ my boyfriend replied with a nonchalant shrug as he replied in As Gaeilge. โBhรญ mรฉ ag rรก le mo leannรกn go bhfuil grรก agam di.โ
My heart slammed wildly in my chest as I mentally translated his words.
Fair enough, teacher. I was telling my sweetheart that I love her.
โDรบirt mรฉ lรฉi freisin go bhfuil cuma รกlainn uirthi,โ Joey continued to say, not missing a beat.ย I also told her that she looks beautiful. Shrugging, he added, โAgus go bhfuil mo chroรญ istigh inti.โย And that my heart is inside her.
โGo hiontach,โ Mr. Dineen replied, arching a brow.ย Impressive.ย โLe haghaidh buachaill nach n-รฉisteann sa rang.โย For a boy who doesnโt listen in class.
โSea.โ Joey smirked. โTรก a fhios agam.โย Yeah, I know.
