Chapter no 59 -โ€Œ โ€Œโ€ŒSOUND THE ALARM

Redeeming 6 (Boys of Tommen, #4)

AOIFE

WHEN THE SKY GREW DARK,ย and the cold started to seep into our bones, Joey and I trudged back to my estate.

With a whole heap of uncertainty still hanging over my head, and my fatherโ€™s interrogation looming, I was glad to have him by my side. The familiar way he had his arm slung over my shoulder somehow meant more tonight than any of the thousand other times he held me like this in the past. Because we were in trouble, and he was still here, still backing me up like a loyal teammate.

We both knew that whatever my father planned to say about our situation, the blame would inevitably fall at my boyfriendโ€™s feet, and still, his step never faltered. I was incredibly grateful to him for being the kind of person who followed through on what he said.

Joey said that he would be here, and heย was. I knew that he was afraid of the unknown.

Of his ability to get clean and stay clean.

Heโ€™d opened up more this afternoon than he had in a long time, and even though the demons that plagued him scared me half to death, I was grateful

that he was willing to let me in. I was grateful that he had found a way to trust me, even when he didnโ€™t trust himself.

โ€œWhat the actual fuck,โ€ Joey bit out, when we rounded the corner of my street, and locked eyes on a familiar, ancient Honda Accord parked outside my house.

My heart slammed in my chest at the sight and my eyes widened in horror. โ€œIs thatโ€”โ€

โ€œMy old manโ€™s car?โ€ Furious, he nodded. โ€œIโ€™m going to kill him.โ€

โ€œNo, youโ€™re not,โ€ I choked out, twisting around so that I was facing him. โ€œHey, hey, Joe.โ€ Reaching up, I grabbed his face and forced him to look at me. โ€œShh, just calm down a sec, okay?โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s in yourย house, Molloy!โ€ Beyond livid, Joey, stalked towards my garden gate, hooking an arm around me and taking me with him when I didnโ€™t step out of his way. โ€œWhat the fuck is he playing at?โ€

โ€œIt doesnโ€™t matter, Joe โ€“ do you hear me?โ€ Digging my heels into the footpath, I pressed my hands to his chest. โ€œItโ€™s okay. Iโ€™m not afraid of that bastard.โ€

โ€œWell, I donโ€™t want him anywhere near you!โ€

I didnโ€™t want him anywhere near either of us, but I had a feeling his father being here had more to do with my father than anything else. โ€œJust breathe, okay? Take a breath.โ€

His eyes bulged in outrage. โ€œAre you fucking crazy?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t take that tone with me, you big bastard!โ€ I snapped, slapping at his chest to regather his attention. โ€œSo, stop walking and justย breathe.โ€

Releasing a frustrated growl, Joey reluctantly came to a stop and made a pitiful attempt at reining in his temper. โ€œSee?โ€ he barked, inhaling an exaggerated breath. โ€œIย amย breathing.โ€

Yeah, he was breathingย flames.

โ€œIf your parents are here, itโ€™s because they were invited by mine,โ€ I tried to wrangle him in by saying. โ€œI need you to be calm, okay? I mean it, Joe. Donโ€™t react to him.ย Please.โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€ he demanded hoarsely, throwing his hands up. โ€œWhyย in the name of god would your parents inviteย myย parents over?โ€

โ€œTo talk, most likely.โ€ โ€œAboutย what?โ€

I rolled my eyes. โ€œUh, gee, I donโ€™t know, Joe; maybe about the fact that their children are having a baby?โ€

Joey stared at me like he didnโ€™t understand a word of my logic, and it made my heart ache for him.

He truly didnโ€™t understand how parents should behave.

He had never experienced a remotely loving act from either one of his. โ€œListen to me,โ€ I coaxed, hands drifting to his neck. โ€œThis isnโ€™t an

ambush, okay? Youโ€™re not under attack here. My parents donโ€™t know any of it, okay? All they know about your dad is that heโ€™s a shitty person, and theyโ€™re about to share a grandchild. Thatโ€™s all this is, Joe, a sit down.โ€

โ€œHeย isย a shitty person,โ€ my boyfriend agreed, voice laced with pain. โ€œA

veryย shitty person.โ€

โ€œWhich is why you need to keep the head in there, okay?โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t.โ€

โ€œPlease, Joe,โ€ I begged. โ€œJust stayย calm, okay?โ€ When my words failed to reach him, I grabbed his hand and pressed it to my stomach. โ€œFeel this?โ€ I demanded; eyes locked on his. โ€œThis is ours.โ€

โ€œMolloy.โ€

โ€œThis baby isย yours,โ€ I urged, shivering when I felt his fingers splay across my belly. โ€œBut this baby isย notย you, the same way that you areย notย him. So, weโ€™re going to in there, and weโ€™re going to take all of the shit our parents throw at us on the chin, because we both know that nothing they say or do could ever change a damn thing for us. Because Iโ€™ve got your back and youโ€™ve got mine.โ€ Leaning up on my tiptoes, I caught hold of his chin and kissed him hard. โ€œWeโ€™re a team, Joey Lynch, and that bastard doesnโ€™t stand a chance against us.โ€

His breath hitched in his throat. โ€œFuck.โ€ โ€œAre you with me?โ€

He nodded slowly. โ€œIโ€™m with you, Molloy.โ€

KNOWING EXACTLYย who I would find at the kitchen table made the walk from my front door to the kitchen so much harder. The concept of facing my own father was already sending me into a silent panic attack, without throwing Joeyโ€™s parents into the mix. Finding immense strength from the boy who had my hand wrapped safety in his, I found myself plucking up enough nerve to walk my ass into the kitchen and face them all.

My parents. His parents.

My brother.

Even Spud was sprawled out, belly up, in a food-coma, on the mat at the back door.

โ€œOh, thank god,โ€ my father broke the silence by saying, as he set his mug down on the table and blew out a relieved breath. โ€œYouโ€™re back.โ€

With my heart bucking wildly in my chest, and tension oozing from my boyfriend, we stood in the doorway of the kitchen, hand in hand, and absorbed the five pairs of eyes that landed on us.

โ€œTrish,โ€ Joey acknowledged quietly. โ€œTony.โ€ โ€œJoey,โ€ both my parents said in unison.

โ€œAoife,โ€ Marie offered in a small voice, gaze flicking from me to her son.

โ€œJoey.โ€

I nodded in return. โ€œMarie.โ€

Joey stiffened beside me, but didnโ€™t acknowledge his mother, because all of his attention was on the man glaring back at him.

His father.

โ€œWell, arenโ€™t you every bit the fuck up that I warned your mother you were,โ€ Teddy Lynch sneered, getting right down to business, attention locked on my boyfriend. โ€œJust when I thought you couldnโ€™t disappoint us any further, you take it to a new level.โ€

Joey sucked in a sharp breath, but thankfully made no move to respond. Instead, he remained rigid beside me, locked in a heated stare down with a man, who, as far as I was concerned, was the devil incarnate.

โ€œThatโ€™s hardly necessary, Teddy,โ€ my mother chimed in, looking uncomfortable. โ€œThereโ€™s no need to berate the boy.โ€

โ€œYou bring us over here to tell us that our young fella is after catching your young one and you donโ€™t think I need to discipline him? Iโ€™d say that thereโ€™s every need,โ€ the bigger man snapped. Turning back to his son, he hissed, โ€œAre you happy with yourself, ya little bollox? Stupid little cunt, letting your cock do the thinking for ya!โ€ He shook his head in disgust. โ€œYou can kiss goodbye to the hurling. You wonโ€™t have time for it with all the nappies youโ€™ll be working to pay for!โ€

โ€œTeddy,โ€ Marie whispered, placing her small hand on her husbandโ€™s. โ€œPlease.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t you fucking start with me, woman,โ€ he warned, roughly shaking her hand off. โ€œItโ€™s your fault the young fella is soโ€”โ€

โ€œEnough,โ€ my father barked, glowering across the table at Joeyโ€™s father. โ€œI donโ€™t know how things work in your house, Lynch, but youโ€™re in my house now, and you will keep your tone in check.โ€

Whoa. Go Dad.

Teddy glowered at my father, but he didnโ€™t respond, which proved my point all along, which was that this man was only good for beating on women and children. When faced with someone his own size, he quickly climbed back in his box.

โ€œDick,โ€ I muttered under my breath at the same time as Joey did. We flicked our gazes to each other.

I squeezed his hand.

He squeezed mine back.

โ€œOkay, you two,โ€ Dad said then, addressing us both. โ€œTake a seat. We have a lot to discuss.โ€

โ€œI want him out,โ€ I stated, ignoring everyone except my dad. โ€œPut him out.โ€ I pointed to where my brother was perched at the table, next to Joeyโ€™s mam, looking like he had every right to be involved in this conversation. โ€œThis has nothing to do with him.โ€

Kev opened his mouth to protest, but Mam quickly cut him off. โ€œGo upstairs, Kevin.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not fair.โ€

โ€œYou either go upstairs, or you go out,โ€ Dad snapped, turning to glare at my brother. โ€œEither way, youโ€™re not staying in this kitchen.โ€

โ€œThis is bullshit,โ€ my brother grumbled, and then turned to me for help. โ€œAoife, come on, you know I didnโ€™t mean for any of this to come out the way it has.โ€

Yes, he did.

The only remorse Kev felt was for the fact that he now found himself on the sour end of our parentsโ€™ good graces.

Bristling like a caged tiger beside me, I watched as Joeyโ€™s gaze flicked to my brother, and I could feel his temper rising. Joey never said a word, but the look he gave my brother had Kev quickly rising from the table, with none of his earlier bravery.

Refusing to step aside for my brother to pass easily, Joey remained in the doorway, forcing Kev to turn sideways to pass him. With his face crimson, and his shoulders bunched tight, my brother squeezed past my boyfriend,

keeping his gaze trained down at the floor to avoid the death glower he was receiving.

Ha-fucking-ha,ย I mentally cheered,ย go upstairs and change your boxers, you little shit.

Only when my brother was gone, and the kitchen door was closed, did I move for the table, stopping mid-stride when the boy who had a firm hold of my hand refused to move.

I knew why of course.

He didnโ€™t want me anywhere near his father.

Neither did I, but I wasnโ€™t going to cower from a creep like him. I wouldย neverย back down to this man.

Because he didnโ€™t beat me that night and he never would. This was a battle of wills and he wouldย neverย win.

Never.

Call it pluckiness, or just plain pig-headedness, but I refused to give that man a second more of air-time in my thoughts. Teddy Lynch wasย irrelevantย to me, and by standing there facing him, I was letting him know that.

Fighting with him would give him exactly what he wanted. He was a bully, and bullies fattened on fear, tears, and pain.

Rising above him was a form of defiance that was alien to him, and, whether Joey realized it or not, we could hurt his father a lot more by showing a united front.

Giving his hand a hard tug, I tried again, and this time, Joey relented. He followed me over to the table, where we sat opposite his parents, with my

mother and father heading and footing both ends of the table.

โ€œIโ€™m not happy about this,โ€ my father came right out and said, breaking the horrible strained silence. โ€œIโ€™m devastated, if truth be told, but the horse has left the barn, so shouting and roaring about it wonโ€™t change anything.โ€

His words hit hard and I flinched. โ€œDad.โ€œ

โ€œIโ€™m sorry, Tony,โ€ Joey interrupted me and said, addressing my father. โ€œI fucked up.โ€

โ€œUnderstatement of the century,โ€ Teddy sneered. โ€Bright spark.โ€

I could feel Joeyโ€™s knee bopping restlessly against mine, as he thrummed with barely restrained anger. Reaching under the table, I hooked my foot around his and pulled his big, knuckle-torn hand onto my lap, holding onto it with both of mine. Jaw-ticking, my boyfriend did exactly what I asked him to do and ignored his father, focusing on mine instead.

โ€œI fucked up,โ€ Joey repeated, tone thick with emotion, eyes locked on my father, while ignoring the muttered rantings coming from his own. โ€œI let you down, and I let your wife down, but I wonโ€™t let your daughter down.โ€ Knees bopping restlessly, he swallowed deeply and said, โ€œI wonโ€™t let your grandchild down.โ€

โ€œJoey, lad.โ€ My fatherโ€™s eyes flashed with emotion. โ€œIโ€™m notโ€”โ€

โ€œThe road to hell is paved with good intentions,โ€ Teddy interjected, sounding entirely unaffected by the sincerity in his sonโ€™s voice. โ€œTalk is cheap. Itโ€™s grand saying youโ€™ll be there now, but you havenโ€™t a notion of whatโ€™s coming down the line, boy.โ€

โ€œI wonโ€™t leave her,โ€ Joey continued, ignoring his father. โ€œIโ€™ll be here. For all of it. I wonโ€™t run, Tony.โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t run either,โ€ his father reminded him. โ€œI stayed for all of it, too, boy, and look where it got me.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m notย him,โ€ Joey strangled out, as a vein bulged in his neck from the force it was taking him to not respond to his fatherโ€™s goading. Turning to my mother, he shrugged his shoulders almost helplessly, clearly willing her to believe him, โ€œIโ€™m not him, Trish.โ€

โ€œI know, pet,โ€ I heard my mother whisper.

โ€œThis isnโ€™t a wham-bam relationship,โ€ I decided to interject, desperate to take the heat off Joey, and shoulder some of this pressure. โ€œJoeyโ€™s my best friend.โ€ I looked around the table, imploring our parents to hear me. โ€œWeโ€™ve known each other since we were twelve. So, when he says that heโ€™ll there for me, I believe him and all of you should too. Because his word is good.โ€

Surprised by my words, my boyfriend turned to look at me, green eyes burning with unspoken emotion. It was almost like it hurt him to hear someone speak kindly of him. It was foreign to him, and it broke my heart.

โ€œHeโ€™s the best person I know,โ€ I added, keeping my eyes locked on his as I spoke. โ€œAnd I trust him with my life.โ€

โ€œThen youโ€™re even thicker than my wife,โ€ Teddy dismissed with a shake of his head. โ€œBecause that young fella of mine is a walking disaster.โ€ Looking to my father he said, โ€œYou know heโ€™s off his trolley most of the time, donโ€™t ya, Molloy?โ€

โ€œTeddy,โ€ his wife croaked out, pressing her small hand to her brow. โ€œPlease.โ€

โ€œShut up, Marie,โ€ Teddy warned. โ€œThe man has a right to know what kind of serpent got his young one pregnant.โ€ He turned his attention back to my

father. โ€œItโ€™s no secret that Iโ€™ve battled with the drink for most of my life, but this fucker.โ€ He leaned back and whistled. โ€œThis fucker takes it to another level.โ€

โ€œThe boy is grand with alcohol,โ€ I heard my father defend. โ€œAnd if youโ€™re referring to the bit of grass he smokes, then Iโ€™ll be talking to him about that.โ€

โ€œGrass?โ€ Teddy threw his head back and laughed. โ€œDonโ€™t be so fucking naรฏve, Tony. The ladโ€™s a full-blown drug addict.โ€

Both of our motherโ€™s gasped, while Joeyโ€™s shoulders slumped and he bowed his head, still remaining silent, even when his character was being shredded to pieces around us.

โ€œNo, heโ€™s not,โ€ I heard myself defend โ€“ I heard myselfย lieย โ€“ tightening my hold on the hand balled into a fist on my lap. โ€œHe made a few mistakes in the past, but thatโ€™s over and done with.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve been in your shoes,โ€ his mother said, looking directly across the table at me, with so many unspoken words glistening in her forlorn blue eyes. โ€œI know where this is going, and I thinkโ€ฆโ€ Pausing, she sucked in a shallow breath and tentatively tucked her dark hair behind her ears before continuing, โ€œI think you should consider a termination.โ€

โ€œSo, youโ€™re saying if you could go back in time, you would choose the same?โ€ I demanded, furious and unwilling to back down. โ€œYou would have aborted Darren?โ€

โ€œMaybe not Darren, but definitely him,โ€ Teddy spat, and if any other father said that to his son, I was sure there would be eruptions, but Joey didnโ€™t bat an eyelid at his cruelness.

He was used to it.

Heโ€™d heard it a thousand times before.

โ€œKind of like what your mother should have done to you, Teddy?โ€ I heard myself hiss.

โ€œAoife!โ€ Mam gasped, tone shocked. โ€œWe donโ€™t speak to people like that.โ€

โ€œPeople, no,โ€ I agreed. โ€œBut heโ€™s not people, Mam.โ€ I glowered around the table at each one of our parents and said, โ€œIt doesnโ€™t matter what any of you think. I donโ€™t care if you agree with my decision or not. Iโ€™m sorry, Dad, but that includes you. Joey and I talked about it, and weโ€™reย keepingย our baby.โ€

โ€œAre you sure?โ€ Marie choked out, looking devastated.

โ€œYes,โ€ I narrowed my eyes and growled. โ€œThe only thing Iโ€™ve ever been surer of is your son.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re making a mistake,โ€ Marie sobbed, dropping her head in her hands. โ€œThis is a mistake.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™ve all made mistakes,โ€ Mam offered, trying to be the voice of reason. โ€œNot one person sitting at this table is perfect, and I, for one, think itโ€™s very admirable of our children to stand overโ€”โ€

โ€œOh, for Christโ€™s sake, woman, get a grip, will ya?โ€ Teddy snapped, slamming his fist down on the table in annoyance. โ€œThereโ€™s nothing admirable about two teenagers shacking up to play house. You want a preview of how it goes, take a good fucking look at us.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t raise your voice to my wife,โ€ my father warned in a deathly cold tone of voice. โ€œAnd her name is Trish, notย woman.โ€

โ€œWell, knock some damn sense into her,โ€ Teddy argued, looking at my father like he couldnโ€™t understand why he was letting my mother lead the

conversation. โ€œBecause her head is in the clouds if she thinks this can work.โ€ โ€œKnock some sense into her?โ€ Dadโ€™s face reddened. โ€œA bit likeโ€”” โ€œSteady up, Tony, love,โ€ Mam interrupted, offering my father a knowing

wink from across the table. โ€œWeโ€™re here for our daughter, remember?โ€

With a pained sigh, my father offered her a loving nod and unclenched his hands from the rim of the table. โ€œSo, youโ€™re keeping the baby.โ€ He looked to me and Joey for confirmation.

We nodded in unison.

I presumed to my father that we looked like a duo of nodding seals. Or a couple of deer caught in headlights.

โ€œFine, I accept this as your decision, and I respect your willingness to go

ahead with your plan,โ€ he replied after a long pause of silence. โ€œBut you both need to be aware that at the end of this pregnancy, there will be a child to care for, and this child will bind you together.โ€ Blowing out a heavy breath, he added, โ€œA child is not a relationship that you can walk away from, or a marriage that can be dissolved. This is a lifetime commitment. Youโ€™ll forever be entwined in one anotherโ€™s lives. That baby will need the both of you for the rest of your lives. Together or apart. The baby will need its mother and father in equal measures.โ€

โ€œRight now, youโ€™re both eighteen and in love,โ€ Mam offered up. โ€œBut you wonโ€™t always be young, and you might not always be in love either.โ€

โ€œIf you are, then fantastic, you have nothing to worry about,โ€ Dad chimed in, giving my mother a knowing smile. โ€œBut if you fall out of love with each other, if you grow apart, are you sure youโ€™re both ready to deal with the consequences?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve loved your daughter for six years,โ€ Joey finally broke his silence by saying. โ€œI can easily love her for another eighteen.โ€

Goddamnโ€ฆ

My heart skipped in my chest.

He wasnโ€™t trying to sound sweet.

He was trying to sound convincing. Still, I was ready to jump his bones.

โ€œLove?โ€ Teddy sneered. โ€œYou thinkย lovingย each other is all you need to make this work?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s half the battle,โ€ my mother replied in a curt tone.

โ€œItโ€™s bullshit,โ€ Teddy argued, dismissing her, making it clearer every time he opened his mouth that he did not care for a womanโ€™s opinion on anything. โ€œIโ€™ll tell ya something, Tony,โ€ he continued, looking to Dad instead. โ€œYour wife might have rose-tinted glasses on, but I know deep down you can see this for what it is. A fucking shit storm. That boy of mine is in no position to raise a baby. Heโ€™s on a fast-track to nowhere, and if you donโ€™t want that young one of yours following after him, then youโ€™ll put her on a boat to England and have her cut ties with him.โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s not going to fucking England!โ€ Joey spat, as he erupted on his father. โ€œAnd youโ€™ve got a lot of fucking nerve to sit across this table from me, offering up fatherly advice, and accusing me of not being able to raise a child.โ€œ

โ€œJoey, sonโ€”โ€

โ€œNo, Tony, let me finish, because this needs to be said,โ€ Joey argued, holding a hand up to my father, while focusing on Teddy Lynch. โ€œYou might

have fathered six kids, but you sure as shit didnโ€™t raise them.โ€

โ€œJoey,โ€ Marie choked out, looking anxious. โ€œPlease donโ€™t go there.โ€

โ€œAnd you sure as shit didnโ€™t mother us,โ€ he snapped, tone laced with accusation, as he glared at his mother. โ€œDarren raised me and Shannon. Not you, and not him.ย Darrenย raised us โ€“ until your husband literally drove him out of the fucking country. And then, all of the raising was left to me. So, donโ€™t fucking sit there and pretend that Iโ€™m incapable of being a good father toย myย kid when thatโ€™sย exactlyย what Iโ€™ve been doing forย yoursย since I was twelve!โ€

I didnโ€™t open my mouth to stop him because these assholes deserved to hear his pain.

They deserved to hear theย truth.

โ€œIโ€™m not him, and Aoifeโ€™s not you,โ€ Joey continued to tell his mother. โ€œAnd you can say what you want about me, old man,โ€ he added, addressing his father now. โ€œBut you donโ€™t know a goddamn thing about the kind of person I am.โ€

โ€œI know exactly who you are,โ€ his father shot back, unyielding. โ€œYouโ€™re me twenty-four years ago.โ€

Nothing else he could have said could have hurt Joey more than that comparison, and I felt his hand grow limp in mine, as he leaned back in his chair, looking winded.

โ€œItโ€™s not true,โ€ I hurried to soothe. โ€œYouโ€™reย nothingย like him.โ€

And this time, when I said the words, I meant it physically as well as every other way. For a long time, I thought Joey bore an uncanny resemblance to his father, and to anyone not looking closely enough, it was

certainly true. But sitting here, looking at both father and son in the clear light of our kitchen, the differences were obvious.

Beefy and paunch-bellied from years of alcohol abuse, even though he wasnโ€™t a fat man, he weighed substantially more than his son.

There was a softness to Joeyโ€™s eyes that his fatherโ€™s eyes were void of. He had his motherโ€™s nose, I noted, and her high cheekbones, too. Similar to his sister, he had swollen, puffy lips that they had also clearly inherited from her. And sure, while they were both tall, broad, tanned, and blond, Teddy Lynch had cold, dead, emotionless, brown eyes, while emerald-colored embers of fire burned in his sonโ€™s eyes.

Joey might have shared his fatherโ€™s height, hair color, golden-rich complexion, and stature, but the two were like fire and ice. He had a lot more of his mother in him than anyone realized.

โ€œEveryone just calm down,โ€ my mother interjected, holding her hands up. โ€œWeโ€™re not here to talk about the past. All of that can be hashed over another day. Right now, we need to talk about this pregnancy, because in a little over five months, our children are going to have a baby, a baby that the four of us will be grandparents to.โ€

โ€œIf anyone at this table thinks that Iโ€™m going to let him anywhere near my kid, then youโ€™re all fucking crazy,โ€ Joey bit out, glowering at his parents. โ€œOver my dead body.โ€

โ€œJoey,โ€ his mother sobbed, voice cracking. โ€œPlease.โ€

โ€œYeah,โ€ I decided to pipe up, for no other reason than to let him know that I had his back in this fight. โ€œWhat Joe said.โ€

โ€œAoife,โ€ Mam sighed, with a shake of her head. โ€œYouโ€™re not helping.โ€

I gave her a look that saidย so?

โ€œYou think I give a shit?โ€ Teddy laughed cruelly. โ€œI never wanted to see your face, boy. I still donโ€™t, so what makes you think that I would want to see anything that came off ya?โ€

โ€œMy heartโ€™s bleeding,โ€ Joey drawled sarcastically.

โ€œYouโ€™ll be bleeding alright, when I get my hands on ya.โ€

โ€œJesus Christ, Teddy,โ€ Dad snapped, running his hand through his hair. โ€œThatโ€™s your boy, youโ€™re talking to.โ€

โ€œEverybody needs to calm down,โ€ Mam commanded, addressing the whole table. โ€œThis doesnโ€™t have to get personal.โ€

โ€œYou know what, I think it already has,โ€ Joey declared, as he shoved his chair back and stood. โ€œIโ€™m sorry, Trish, I am, but I wonโ€™t sit here and talk about a baby that I have no intention of ever letting these two fuckers taint.โ€

โ€œWho the fuck do you think youโ€™re talking to?โ€ Furious, his father stood up, rounded the table and roughly clamped his beefy hand around the back of his neck. โ€œSit your hole down, boy,โ€ he commanded, forcing Joey to sit back down.

Jaw ticking, I watched as my boyfriend kept his hands at his sides, refusing to spill blood in my family home, as he let his father manhandle him.

It was degrading. It was disgusting.

โ€œHey!โ€ Unable to stop myself, the urge I had to protect the boy I loved so fiercely, I clawed at the hand he was using to grip his neck. โ€œGet your filthy hands off him.โ€

โ€œAoife!โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t even look at her,โ€ Joey snarled, rising to his feet to block me from his fatherโ€™s view when he opened his mouth to respond.

โ€œJoey,โ€ his mother sobbed. โ€œPleaseโ€ฆโ€

โ€œIโ€™m done talking to you,โ€ Joey told her in a shaky tone. โ€œIโ€™m doneย withย you.โ€ He turned back to my father and said, โ€œThis isnโ€™t me walking away from my responsibilities. This is me walking away from a murder charge.โ€ Blowing out a frustrated breath, he tenderly tipped my chin up with his knuckles and said, โ€œAre you with me?โ€

Out of my chair and up on my feet in seconds, I was moving for the door, with my hand firmly entwined with his. โ€œOh, I amย soย with you.โ€

โ€œWait right there,โ€ Mam called after us. โ€œDonโ€™t even think about wandering around town in the dark of night, in your condition. Take Joey up to your room, while we finish up here.โ€

โ€œUpstairs?โ€ Dad muttered. โ€œReally, Trish?โ€

โ€œWhat are they going to do, Tony?โ€ Mam sighed. โ€œGet pregnant again?

They have to get this one out to put another one in.โ€ โ€œJesus, donโ€™t give them any notions.โ€

โ€œHE HASย some goddamn nerve coming here,โ€ Joey bit out, as he paced my bedroom floor. โ€œSanctimonious bastard thinking he has any right to lecture me on parenthood. Fucker never changed a nappy in his life, and he sure as hell never paid for one, either!โ€

Over an hour had passed since we came up to my room, leaving our parents downstairs to hash it out, and he was still pacing around like a madman.

โ€œHis entire side of the family is the same,โ€ he continued to rant, as his hair stood up in forty different directions from the sheer height of pulling on it in frustration. โ€œAssholes, the lot of them.โ€

Clad in his school uniform, and looking entirely too comfortable in my sleeping quarters, Joey stomped around my room like a powerhouse, stopping every few minutes to re-align a crooked poster on my wall, or to fold one of the many items of clothing I had strewn on the floor.

โ€œIf you ever met his asshole father and scumbag brothers, youโ€™d know what Iโ€™m talking about,โ€ he grumbled, folding another pair of my discarded jeans. โ€œAnd his mother?โ€ He shook his head and shuddered. โ€œDonโ€™t even get me started on that fucking demon of a woman.โ€

โ€œYour nanny?โ€ I asked, from my perch on my bed, as I gave my toes a dodgy French pedicure. โ€œI thought she was nice.โ€

โ€œNo, no, thatโ€™s Nanny Murphy,โ€ he corrected, bundling a stack of neatly folded clothes into my wardrobe. โ€œSheโ€™s from my motherโ€™s side. Nannyย isย nice. Youโ€™ve met Nanny.โ€

โ€œWith the cute perm?โ€

โ€œYeah, sheโ€™s the one who gave me that miraculous medal from Knock to give you for your eighteenth.โ€

โ€œOh yeah, Iย loveย Nanny.โ€

โ€œYeah, we should go see her,โ€ he muttered, rubbing his jaw. โ€œTell her the news ourselves.โ€

โ€œAbout the baby?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€ He nodded. โ€œNannyโ€™s a saint. The witch is my fatherโ€™s mother,โ€ he fell back into explaining. โ€œSheโ€™s a tyrant, Aoif. Youโ€™ve never met anyone

as cold asโ€”. Hold up. Should you even be using that stuff?โ€ He stopped his rant-induced pacing to swipe up my bottle of nail polish and eye it warily. โ€œDoesnโ€™t this shit have chemicals that might be bad for my baby?โ€

โ€œIt will be bad for you if you donโ€™t back up from my top coat,โ€ I grumbled, reaching up to swipe the bottle back. โ€œDonโ€™t get all anal on me, Joe.โ€

โ€œHey.โ€ He held up his hands. โ€œIโ€™m only asking out of concern for the kid.โ€

โ€œSuch a law-abider.โ€

He rolled his eyes. โ€œBack to the witch.โ€

โ€œThe witch,โ€ I mimicked with a snort. โ€œThatโ€™s a conversation I look forward to listening to you have with our child.โ€ Cackling to myself, I feigned his deep voice and said, โ€œHey, kid, so this is your great-grandmother, the witch, and these are your great-uncles, the scumbags.โ€

โ€œAnd this is your grandfather, the rapist, alcoholic bastard himself.โ€ Groaning, Joey stopped pacing to bang his forehead against the wardrobe door. โ€œPoor kid is fucked and she isnโ€™t even here yet.โ€

โ€œIt might be a boy.โ€ โ€œChrist, I hope not.โ€

My heart flipped. โ€œYou want a girl?โ€

โ€œI just donโ€™t want anything remotely like me,โ€ he replied, and his honesty broke me. โ€œLet it be all you, and Iโ€™ll be happy.โ€

โ€œI do,โ€ I replied. โ€œWant it to be like you, that is.โ€ He paused to glare at me. โ€œBe serious, Molloy.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ I argued back. โ€œYouโ€™re loyal, youโ€™re strong, youโ€™re athletic, youโ€™re talented, youโ€™re beautiful.โ€ I shrugged. โ€œWhy wouldnโ€™t I want our baby to be like you?โ€

โ€œBecause Iโ€™m a fuck-up.โ€

I smirked. โ€œOnly some of the time.โ€

โ€œOh, thatโ€™s alright then,โ€ he shot back, tone laced with sarcasm. โ€œIf itโ€™s justย someย of the time.โ€

โ€œNot to mention the fact that youโ€™reย wayย smarter than me.โ€ He snorted. โ€œYouโ€™re crazy.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re probably the smartest guy in our year, and if you had been born into any other family, youโ€™d be in the brainiac class with Kev and the other swots.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m barely hanging on in school, Aoif,โ€ he ground out, looking flustered. โ€œIโ€™m passing my classes by the skin of my teeth.โ€

โ€œBut youโ€™reย passing, which is exactly my point,โ€ I reiterated. โ€œBecause if Kev, or Paul, or anyone else in our year had to deal with what you do on the daily, then I guarantee you that they would crumble,โ€ I replied. โ€œDeny it all you want, but thereโ€™s one hell of a sharp mind inside that thick skull of yours,โ€ I mused, as I coated my baby toe with one final layer of nail varnish before resealing the bottle. โ€œNow.โ€ Smiling sweetly up at him, I leaned back on my elbows and wiggled my toes. โ€œBlow.โ€

Joey looked at me like I had grown an extra head. โ€œYou are fucking crazy if you think Iโ€™m blowing on your toes.โ€

โ€œCome on, Joe,โ€ I whined, toes still wiggling. โ€œIโ€™m pregnant.โ€ โ€œSo?โ€ he shot back, looking personally insulted.

โ€œI donโ€™t want the polish to smudge.โ€ โ€œThen donโ€™t smudge it.โ€

โ€œBlow.โ€

โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œBlow on my toes.โ€ โ€œAbsolutely fucking not.โ€ โ€œJoey Lynch.โ€

โ€œAoife Molloy.โ€

โ€œYou said youโ€™d be there for me.โ€

โ€œAs your boyfriend and the father of your baby,โ€ he spluttered, throwing his hands up. โ€œNot as your personal fucking groomer.โ€

โ€œThere were no stipulations spoken when you made your promises,โ€ I argued. โ€œNow come here and blow me.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s my line.โ€

โ€œIt wonโ€™t ever be again if you donโ€™t do this for me.โ€

โ€œJesus fucking Christ.โ€ Rolling his eyes, Joey sank down on the edge of my bed and pulled my feet onto his lap. โ€œYou have an eejit made out of me.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re the best,โ€ I crooned victoriously. โ€œI lucked out in the baby-daddy stakes.โ€

โ€œHm,โ€ Joey grunted, entirely unimpressed with me, as he blew each one of my toenails dry before unceremoniously dropping my feet back on the bed, and stalking over to my window.

โ€œWow, good job, Joe,โ€ I crooned admiring my toes. โ€œNext time, you can help me paintโ€”โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t push it,โ€ he grumbled, shoving the window open and pulling a packet of cigarettes out of his pocket. โ€œI need a smoke.โ€ Throwing one leg over the ledge to dangle outside, while keeping the other on my bedroom floor, he sank down on the sill, and sparked up.

โ€œAnd you had the gall to lecture me on painting my toenails?โ€ I cocked a brow. โ€œYou should think about quitting.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m quitting an awful lot of stuff lately. Give me something to cling to, will ya?โ€ came his smart-ass response, as he leaned out my window. โ€œDo you think theyโ€™re still downstairs with your folks?โ€

Yes.ย I shrugged. โ€œI havenโ€™t heard the front door slam.โ€

โ€œThe hell are they talking about?โ€ he muttered, looking stressed and on edge. โ€œI donโ€™t like this, Molloy.โ€

Neither do I.ย โ€œItโ€™ll be okay, Joe.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re right.โ€ Inhaling a deep drag, he leaned out the window to expel the smoke from his lungs before adding, โ€œItโ€™ll be grand. If the kid is as persuasive as his mother and can throw a punch like his father, then weโ€™re golden.โ€

I arched a brow. โ€œHe?โ€

โ€œHe. She.โ€ He waved a hand around aimlessly. โ€œWhatever.โ€ โ€œDo you want to find out?โ€

โ€œFind out what?โ€

โ€œThe gender.โ€

โ€œTomorrow?โ€ He turned to frown at me, lips pursed around his cigarette. โ€œBecause they canโ€™t tell this early, Molloy.โ€ He leaned back out the window

to exhale another cloud of smoke before adding, โ€œYouโ€™ll need to wait for the anomaly scan.โ€

โ€œAnomaly scan?โ€ I gaped at him. โ€œWhat theย hellย is that and why does it sound like itโ€™s going to be painful?โ€

โ€œJesus, youโ€™re all drama,โ€ he chuckled, rubbing his jaw. โ€œItโ€™s not painful, itโ€™s a detailed ultrasound they give you around the twenty-week mark.โ€

โ€œWhere?โ€ My eyes widened in fear. โ€œBecause I saw this really horrible documentary where this doctor guy put a condom on this giant dildo-shaped camera and literally rammed it up this poor girlโ€™s fannyโ€”โ€

โ€œThey scan yourย stomach,โ€ he laughed, cutting me off. โ€œCome on, Molloy. Youโ€™re a girl. How do you not know this stuff?โ€

โ€œWell, Iโ€™m sorry, baby whisperer,โ€ I shot back huffily. โ€œWe donโ€™t all come from families that rival the size of a football team. Weโ€™re not all acquainted with the harrowing throes of pregnancy.โ€

โ€œWell, you better get acquainted and fast,โ€ Joey replied, exhaling another cloud of smoke. โ€œBecause itโ€™s coming.โ€

โ€œJesus.โ€ A full body shudder rolled through me. โ€œHey, Joe?โ€ โ€œHm?โ€

โ€œAre you going to still want me when Iโ€™m the size of a whale?โ€

โ€œMolloy.โ€ He chuckled under his breath. โ€œFor fuckโ€™s sake.โ€ โ€œIโ€™m serious.โ€

โ€œI know you are.โ€ With a shake of his head, he tossed the cigarette butt away and climbed back inside. โ€œYouโ€™re not going to be the size of a whale.โ€

โ€œBut if I am?โ€

โ€œYou wonโ€™t be.โ€ โ€œI might be.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re having a baby, Molloy, not inhaling a town.โ€

โ€œBut say it happens.โ€

โ€œJesus Christ.โ€ He rolled his eyes to the heavens. โ€œYes, Iโ€™m still going to want you.โ€

โ€œHow?โ€

โ€œHow?โ€ His brows furrowed in confusion as he closed the space between us. โ€œWhat do you meanย how?โ€

โ€œHow are you going to still find me sexy when Iโ€™m big and round and swollen?โ€ I gestured to my body and sighed. โ€œLook at me, Joe. Wonโ€™t you miss this body?โ€

He threw his head back and laughed.

โ€œHey โ€“ donโ€™t laugh at me, asshole.โ€ I narrowed my eyes. โ€œIโ€™m feeling vulnerable here.โ€

โ€œYou are the vainest girl Iโ€™ve ever met.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not vanity when itโ€™sย true,โ€ I sniped. โ€œThen itโ€™s just plain honesty.โ€ Still chuckling, he shook his head, clearly amused. โ€œChrist, I love you.โ€

Grinning, he flopped down on the mattress beside me and stretched his arm out for me to join him. As soon as I snuggled into the crook of his arm, he pulled me close and released a contented sigh. โ€œDonโ€™t ever lose it, Molloy.โ€

โ€œLose what?โ€

โ€œThat spark of fire that makes you so incrediblyย you,โ€ he replied, tightening his arm around me. โ€œIt doesnโ€™t matter how your body changes,

because Iโ€™m always going to keep coming back toย you. Because I might enjoy touching all of this,โ€ he explained, fingers trailing over my body until he reached my face and gently tapped my temple. โ€œBut Iโ€™m hooked onย this.โ€

โ€œMy mind?โ€ I asked, tone incredulous. โ€œBullshit.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s true,โ€ he coaxed. โ€œNobody else can fuck with my head quite like you can, and that has nothing to do with your body, Molloy.โ€

โ€œOkay,โ€ I conceded with a lopsided grin. Twisting onto my side, I slid my hand under his shirt to rest on the bare skin of his stomach. โ€œThat was ridiculously smooth.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m known to have my moments,โ€ he laughed, rolling onto his side, mirroring me. โ€œWhen Iโ€™m not fucking up.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re going to be okay, arenโ€™t we, Joe?โ€ I heard myself ask. โ€œArenโ€™t we always?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m serious.โ€ I reached up to stroke his cheek. โ€œEverything is moving way too fast.โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€ He grimaced. โ€œShit has a habit of going that way when Iโ€™m around.โ€

โ€œSeriously, Joe, my head is spinning from all of the twists and turns.โ€

โ€œI have no idea how all of this is going to pan out,โ€ he admitted truthfully. โ€œBut whatever way it goes, Iโ€™ve got your back.โ€

โ€œAnd Iโ€™ve got yours.โ€

โ€œThen weโ€™ll be okay,โ€ he replied with a small nod. โ€œYeah?โ€ I breathed, watching him closely.

His green eyes burned with sincerity when he whispered, โ€œYeah.โ€

A knock on my bedroom door sounded then, and I watched as Joeyโ€™s entire frame stiffened before he reluctantly slid his arm out from beneath me and sat on the edge of my bed.

โ€œCome in,โ€ I croaked out, really not wanting anything or anyone from the outside world to come into this room and burst our bubble.

I only wanted to be with him. All alone.

Just us.

โ€œJoeyโ€™s parents are gone,โ€ Mam announced when she walked into my room, gaze sweeping over us both, no doubt to see if we wereย behavingย ourselves. โ€œAre you alright?โ€

โ€œYou shouldnโ€™t have done that, Mam,โ€ I heard myself say, sitting upright now. โ€œBrought them over here? Ambushing us like that?โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t,โ€ Mam was quick to correct, gaze flicking between us. โ€œYour father wanted to talk to Joeyโ€™s father.โ€

โ€œYeah, well, Iโ€™m sure youโ€™ve realized by now that thereโ€™s no talking to him,โ€ Joey replied with a sigh. โ€œHe only hears what he wants, Trish.โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ Mam agreed sadly. โ€œListen, Joey, if weโ€™ve made it worse for you at homeโ€ฆโ€

โ€œItโ€™s grand,โ€ my boyfriend was quick to dismiss. โ€œI understand why ye had to talk to my parents. I get it.โ€ Standing up, he moved to where his bag was resting against my wardrobe and quickly bundled his uniform inside. โ€œI meant what I said,โ€ he added, zipping it closed and hoisting it onto his back. โ€œIโ€™m not him, Trish.โ€

โ€œI know youโ€™re not, pet,โ€ Mam was quick to soothe.

Nodding stiffly, Joey flicked his gaze to me. โ€œI better go.โ€ My heart sank.

โ€œYou could stay?โ€ I looked to my mother hopefully. โ€œHe could stay the

night, couldnโ€™t he, Mam?โ€

Mam worried her lip. โ€œWell, yesโ€ฆโ€

โ€œNo, I need to go home,โ€ Joey cut in, slipping his arms through the straps of his school bag. โ€œWhat time is the scan tomorrow?โ€

โ€œHalf past one.โ€

โ€œWe finish school at twelve, so we can go straight to the appointment from there.โ€ Retracing the steps back to my bed, he leaned down and brushed a kiss to my cheek. โ€œIโ€™ll see ya in the morning.โ€

โ€œYou can stay,โ€ I pleaded, reaching up to grab his hand.

Giving my hand a small squeeze, he winked down at me before letting go. โ€œIโ€™ll see you tomorrow, okay?โ€ he called over his shoulder, as he moved for my door.

โ€œI donโ€™t know the ins and outs of what happens in your home,โ€ my mother blurted out, causing my boyfriend to freeze in my bedroom doorway. โ€œBut Iโ€™ve heard enough stories and seen enough bruises on your body to know that it has to stop.โ€

โ€œMam!โ€

โ€œYou should know that Iโ€™ve phoned the Gards and reported your father.โ€ โ€œMam,โ€ I strangled out, dropping my head in my hands. โ€œWhat the hell?โ€

โ€œAnd you should probably know that this isnโ€™t the first time that Iโ€™ve

reported him, either, but Iโ€™ve never had enough proof.โ€

โ€œOh my god, Mam.โ€

โ€œBut tonight, he threatened to harm you in front of me,โ€ she continued to say, eyes locked on my boyfriend. โ€œAnd while it might not be my business, I refuse to sit back and do nothing.โ€

โ€œJesus, Mam,โ€ I croaked out, feeling my heart hammer violently, as I waited for him to erupt.

โ€œI presume theyโ€™ll pay a visit to your house before the nightโ€™s out,โ€ Mam added, looking red-faced. โ€œIโ€™m sorry, love, I really am, but I couldnโ€™t have it on my conscience.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s grand, Trish,โ€ was all Joey replied, not turning back to look at either one of us. โ€œI understand.โ€

โ€œYou can stay,โ€ she repeated, tone thick with emotion. โ€œThereโ€™s always room for you in this house.โ€

โ€œThanks.โ€ With a heavy sigh, he shook his head in resignation and said, โ€œBut I have to go home,โ€ before walking away.

Light footsteps sounded on the staircase then, followed a few moments later by the sound of the front door opening and closing shut.

I shook my head and glared at my mother. โ€œWhat have you done, Mam?โ€ โ€œWhatโ€™s right, Aoife,โ€ my mother replied. โ€œIโ€™ve done whatโ€™s right.โ€
