โMAM!โย I screamed, throwing the front door open, and barreling into my house on Thursday afternoon. How I had managed to drive home from school without crashing, I could only put down to my desperation to get to safety.ย To get to my mother.ย โMam!โ
โAoife?โ With a tea towel in her hands, and a startled look on her face, my mother appeared in the kitchen doorway. โWhatโs wrong?โ
โMam!โ I cried, moving straight for her. โHe lied.โ
โWho lied?โ she demanded, sweeping me up in her arms, as I collapsed against her. โWhat happened, Aoife? Who lied, pet?โ
โKev.โ Crying hard and ugly, I wrapped my arms around my motherโs neck and clung to her for all I was worth. โHe toldย Paul, Mam. He toldย everyoneย at school.โ
โHe didย what?โ
โJoey knows โ he found out in class,โ I cried, tightening my hold on her, as my entire body racked and heaved with sobs. โI didnโt even get a chance to tell him myself.โ
โOh Jesus. How did he take it?โ
โHow do you think?โ I cried. โHorribly. Heโs furious with me for keeping it from him.โ
โOh, Aoife.โ
โHe didnโt deserve that, Mam,โ I sobbed. โTo be told like that in front of everyone.โ I shivered violently at the memory. โIt was soย wrong.โ
โI can only imagine.โ
A few moments later, the front door swung inwards, and my brother appeared, looking red-faced and flustered.
โAoif.โ Holding his hands up, Kev approached with caution. โBefore you say anything else, just know that I didnโt know that Paul was going toโโ
โYou bastard!โ Not giving him a chance to finish speaking, I swung around and lunged for my brother, scratching and clawing at his face, as I stooped to a level of despair I had never felt before in my life. โHow could you do this to me?โ
โYou did this to yourself,โ Kev roared back, snatching my wrists up and pinning my arms to my sides. โKeep your goddamn hands to yourself, Aoife.โ
โI hate you,โ I screamed, ripping my hands free only to shove him in the chest. โDo you hear me? I fucking hate you, Kevin.โ
โYeah, well, Iโm not too crazy about you, either.โ
โStop it, you two,โ Mam snapped, coming to stand between us. โThatโs enough.โ
โSheโs the one throwing slaps.โ
โBecause he told our entire school that Iโm pregnant.โ
โI didnโt tell the entire school. I told a few close friends.โ โSince when is my ex your close friend?โ
โSince always,โ my brother roared back.
โBullshit,โ I strangled out. โPaul was only ever nice to you because he was with me.โ
โYou really believe that, donโt you?โ โBecause itโsย true.โ
โYou donโt have authority over who Iโm friends with, Aoife,โ Kev sneered. โAnd if you took your head out of your ass long enough to see whatโs happening around you, then youโd know that Iโve been friends with Ricey since first year. We actually got a lot closer this past year.โ
โI wonder why?โ I rolled my eyes. โYou are such anย idiot.โ
โNot everything is about you, Aoife,โ Kev snapped. โHe actually gives me the time of day โ unlike that asshole youโve attached yourself to who can barely muster up the energy to acknowledge my existence.โ
โWhy should Joey acknowledge you?โ I demanded. โItโs not like youโre even remotely friendly towards him to begin with. You never have been. Every time he comes over you act all superior around him, all the time, and itโs disgusting. Seriously, you talk about me having my head in my ass, when youโre the one with your nose cocked in the air, walking around thinking youโre better than everyone else.โ
โIย amย better than him.โ
โBecause youโre school smart, and heโs not? Because youโre going to
university, and he isnโt? Because youโve been given the luxury of
concentrating on your studies, while heโs had to work since he was twelve? You think that makes you better than him?โ
โSee, youโre trying to insult me, when all youโre really doing is listing off positive characteristic traits.โ
Ugh.
โKevin, Aoife,โ Mam tried to interject. โLetโs just back up a second and breathe.โ
โNewsflash, asshole, thereโs a whole big world out there that wonโt give a crap about how many points you get in the leaving cert, or how high you rank in your class,โ I shouted, ignoring our motherโs request. โAnd if you keep thisย holier than thouย attitude up, I guarantee you wonโt last a week in the real world. So, you can go on thinking that youโre better than my boyfriend, but the truth is you couldnโt hold a candle to him,โ I spat. โYouโre a spoilt, pampered, little boy and Joey is a real man. You could try your whole life and never come close to being on his level!โ
โIf not being on his level means not having to slog it out under the bonnet of a car for the rest of my life, with permanently oil-stained hands, for a shitty wage at the end of the week, that wonโt secure a decent mortgage, then you wonโt hear me complaining.โ
โOh my god, you are such aย snob,โ I screamed, throwing my hands up.
โWhy?โ Kev demanded. โBecause Iโm a realist? Because Iโm stating facts? Because Iโm pissed that my sister has thrown her future away for an asshole from Elkโs Terrace, with no decent prospects?โ
โBecause youโre ungrateful,โ Mam interjected, looking beyond hurt. โAll of those fancy computer games lining the shelves in your bedroom were paid
for with oil-stained hands. Every stitch of clothes on your body, and every morsel of food youโve put in your mouth since the day you were born came from those same hands. Yourย fatherโsย hands. Your father theย mechanic, who has spent most of his life busting his bollocks to give his children a better life than the one he had.โ
โWhich is exactly why you should be praisingย meย for appreciating the sacrifices that you and Dad have made for us, and beratingย herย for throwing them back in your face.โ
โHow have I thrown anything back in their faces?โ
โBy being thick enough to let that scumbag drug-addict between your legs,โ Kev snarled. โYou do realize that the father of your grandchild is a fucking junkie, donโt ya, Mam?โ
โShut the hell up, Kevin,โ I hissed, lunging for him once more.
โStop,โ Mam warned, separating us again. โCalm down, Aoife. This isnโt good for you.โ
โHeย isnโt good for her.โ
โYou donโt know what the fuck youโre talking about!โ
โLook at you,โ my brother roared. โLook at the state of you. Picking fights in your condition. You know why, donโt you? Itโs because heโs after rubbing off on you. You had everything going for you, and you threw it away.โ He shook his head in disgust. โForย him.โ
โWhatโs going on in here?โ Dad asked then, strolling into the kitchen, lunchbox in hand โ and yes, his hands were stained with engine oil. He looked from me to Kev, and his brows furrowed in confusion. โWhat are you
all shouting about?โ He looked to Mam. โItโs lunchtime, Trish. Why are the twins not at school?โ
โNothing,โ Mam was quick to interject, moving to our father. โItโs nothing, Tony.โ
โEnjoy becoming his mother, Aoife,โ Kev continued, ignoring our parents, as he glowered at me. โBecause the entire town knows what kind of a doormat she is. You should take some tips from her sometime, because thatโs all youโll amount to now.โ
โShut up, Kevin,โ Mam hissed. โNot another goddamn word.โ โMother?โ Dad blinked in confusion. โWhose mother?โ
โThis isย yourย fault,โ Kev snapped, turning his accusing glare on our
father. โYou brought him into our lives.โ
โPlease, Mam,โ I groaned, dropping my head in my hands, while Mam tried and failed to silence my furious brother. โJust make him stopย talking.โ
โWho?โ Dad demanded, looking wholly confused. โWhat are you talking about?โ
โAoifeโs pregnant!โ Kev roared, jabbing a finger in my direction, and with those words, he blew my world to smithereens.ย Again. โOff that piece of shit that youโre so hellbent on seeing the best of.โ
My father reeled back like the words my brother spoke had physically struck him.
โKevin,โ Mam strangled out and then quickly placed her hands on my fatherโs chest. โTony, breathe. Itโs alright, love, just take a breath.โ
โYeah, golden boy doesnโt seem so perfect now, does he?โ Kev taunted, looking angrier than Iโd ever seen. โNot when heโs knocked up your daughter,
huh, Dad?โ
โWhat are youโฆ?โ My fatherโs panicked eyes flicked to me. โAoife?โ โDad, I didnโt meanโฆ Iโm so sorry,โ I sobbed, hands hanging limply at
my sides. I looked at my brother and shook my head. โIย hateย you.โ
โI tried to tell you about him,โ Kev continued to shout, aiming his pain at our father now. โBut you wouldnโt be told. Iย warnedย you about what kind of person he was, but you insisted on hiring him โ on treating him like the son you always wanted but never got with me!โ
โKevin.โ
โWell, congrats, Dad,โ Kev croaked out, voice breaking. โYou finally got your wish. Youโll have a grandchild off him soon enough that will cement him deeper into the family. Youโll finally have the son you always wanted.โ
Unable to handle another second of watching my world fall around me, I bolted from the kitchen, ignoring my motherโs pleading and fatherโs shouting, as I made a beeline for the front door, desperate to escape.
โAoife,โ Kev called out, hurrying after me. โWait up.โ
โDonโt touch me,โ I spat, yanking my arm free from his hold, and I glared up at him. โAnd donโtย everย speak to me again.โ
โI didnโtโฆโ my brother began to say, but then jutted his chin out defiantly and hissed, โHe had to know.โ
โIt wasnโt your place to tell him,โ I countered shakily, feeling the ultimate form of betrayal at the hands of the person whoโd shared a womb with me. โIt wasnโt your place to tell anyone. It was mine, and you took that choice away from me.โ
Regret flickered in his eyes.
โYouโre so jealous of Joeyโs relationship with Dad that you threw your own twin under the bus to get one up on him.โ
โAoife.โ
โYou literally destroyed my entire world, Kevin.โ I shook my head, not bothering to wipe the tears from my cheeks. Fresh ones would just take their place. โWhy?โ
โI didnโtโฆโ He ran a hand through his hair and sighed. โLook, at least itโs out in the open now. If anything, I did you a favor.โ
โYou told myย fatherย before I could,โ I choked out, chest heaving. โYou told Paul who told myย babyโsย father before I could.โ
Confusion filled his eyes. โJoey didnโt know?โ I shook my head.
โI didnโt know that.โ Sighing heavily, he reached for my hand. โShit,
Aoif, I didnโtโโ
โNo.โ I held a hand up and warned him off. โStay back.โ โAoife.โ
โI mean it,โ I snapped. โIโm ashamed to call you my brother.โ
โAnd you think Iโmย proudย to call you my sister?โ he shouted back, cheeks reddening. โProud to have a slut in the family? Youโre the embarrassment here, Aoife. Youโre the one bringing down the tone. Youโre the screw-up, not me,โ he tossed out defensively. โItโs not my fault that you didnโt tell the guy. Heโs the first one you shouldโve told.โ
โNot yourย fault?โ I gaped at him. โThis isย allย your fault. You might have the brains when it comes to school, but youโre a cruel, spoilt, jealous bastard,
without a shred of heart, and I will never forgive you for this. Do you hear me, Kevin? I willย neverย forgive you!โ
โFine,โ he shot back defensively, tone thick with emotion. โSee if I care.โ
โOh, youโll care, you spiteful little shit,โ I growled, backing up the garden path towards our gate. โAnd youโll be sorry.โ
โWhat are you going to do?โ he called after me. โSet your guard dog on me?ย Again?โ
โI pulled him off you the last time,โ came my heated reply. โDonโt think Iโll make that mistake twice.โ
โAnd I let him off the hook the last time,โ my brother reminded me. โDonโt think Iโll make that mistake twice.โ
โNo, Kev, I wonโt set my boyfriend on you,โ I hissed, shoving the gate open. โBecause, unlike you, I donโt need anyone to fight my battles for me.โ
โWhatโs that supposed to mean?โ
โIt means that youโve never fought your own battles a day in your damn life,โ I practically screamed. โYouโre too busy hiding behind Mamโs skirt.โ
โBullshit.โ
โOh, you think youโve just sailed through secondary school based on your stellar personality alone?โ I demanded. โNo, asshole, youโve been wrapped in bubble wrap for six years, becauseย Iโveย had your back the entire time.โ
โI never asked you to do that for me.โ
โYou didnโt have to ask me,โ I bit out. โThatโs whatย familyย does. They look out for each other. They protect each other. They have each otherโs backs.โ I shrugged my shoulders. โOr at least, thatโs what I thought we were, but clearly, I was wrong.โ
โYouโre overreacting here,โ he muttered, rubbing his jaw.
โNo,ย youโreย underestimating the damage youโve done to our relationship,โ I corrected, pointing a finger at him. โIโm done having your back, Kev. Iโm done being your sister. It ends today. And good luck getting Mam back on side now that sheโs finally seen you for what you truly are โ a fucking brat!โ
โI was upset,โ he tried to defend himself, throwing his hands up. โYou and Mam were keeping secrets, and spending so much time togetherโโ
โAnd poor little Kev spat the dummy because he wasnโt getting his mammyโs undivided attention like heโs used to getting every second of the day since we were born,โ I filled in, tone laced with sarcasm. โWell, boo- fucking-hoo, you sap. So, Mam gave me a sliver of attention for once after youโve spent eighteen years monopolizing her time. Get the hell over yourself!โ
โLike your boyfriend has done withย ourย father?โ
โIf you have a problem with Dadโs relationship with Joey, then take it up with Dad,โ I shot back, wholly enraged. โDonโt ruinย myย life because you want to put a wedge between them.โ
โThatโs not what I was trying to do.โ
โThatโsย exactlyย what you were trying to do,โ I snapped. โAnd yeah, you might have achieved it, but you also lost yourself a sister in the process.โ
โAoife, come on,โ he called after me. โIโm sorry, okay?โ
โDonโt come too close, Kev,โ I called over my shoulder, as I stormed down the footpath away from my brother. โYou wouldnโt want the neighbors seeing you associating with the familyย slut.โ
โWhat did you say to her, ya little bollox?โ Rushing into the garden, with Mam hot on his heels, Dad called after me, โAoife, get back here in your condition.โ
โDonโt go running off like this,โ Mam added. โCome back inside, love.
Your fatherโs not going to shout at you.โ
โLeave me alone!โ I screamed, breaking into a run, as I raced down the footpath, needing to get as far away from my family as possible.
Because I couldnโt do this. It was too much.
I couldnโt handle the emotions rushing through me.
I was too close to my breaking point to take another hit.
However, when I rounded the corner at the end of my street, and smacked into a hard chest, thatโs exactly what happened.
โHoly shit.โ A familiar pair of hands came around me, moving to grip my shoulders and steady me. โMolloy.โ Joey was breathing hard and fast, clearly having sprinted all the way over here from school. โThe fuck are you running off to?โ
I couldnโt answer him because I had no idea where I had intended to go. I only knew that he wasย exactlyย where I needed him to be.
โJoe.โ Unable to shoulder this crippling weight by myself for a second longer, I slumped against him, needing to feel his arms around me in this moment more than I needed my next breath. โJoe.โ
โItโs okay.โ His arms came around me, tight and full of comfort, as he pulled me into his embrace. โShh. Itโs okay.โ
Burying my face in the front of his school jumper, I clutched the fabric at his back, and let him take my weight, taking every ounce of support he was offering me. Because I needed his support. I neededย him.
โIโve got you, Molloy.โ โPlease donโt hate me.โ โI donโt.โ
โIโm so sorry for not telling you sooner,โ I cried. โFor you having to find out like you did.โ
โListen to me.โ With his hands on my cheeks, and his fingers tangled in my hair, he forced me to look up at him. โDonโt apologize. I get it, okay?โ
โYou get it?โ
โI get it.โ He nodded slowly. โWhy you didnโt tell me. What you were trying to do. I donโt like it, but I get it.โ He exhaled a shaky breath. โIโm just so fucking sorry for being the kind of person that you felt you needed to protect, when it should have been the other way around.โ
Unable to tear my eyes away, I watched as Joey absorbed the brunt of the metaphorical axe that I had just swung down on his neck โ on his entire world.
I could see it all in his eyes.
Everything he wanted to say, everythingย Iย wanted to say, but never would. All of the fear.
The regret.
The hurt.
The guilt.
Expelling a pained breath, Joey lowered his face to mine and gently rested his brow against mine. โIโm so sorry, Molloy.โ
Tears spilled down my cheeks, and my breath came in short puffs, as I reached up and covered his hands with mine. โIโm sorry, too, Joe.โ
โI donโt know what to say here,โ he admitted in a hoarse tone. โIโm scared to fucking death right now, so I can only imagine how youโve been feeling. But Iโm here, okay?โ He shrugged his shoulders helplessly. โIโm here and Iโm going nowhere.โ
โYeah?โ
โYeah.โ He nodded slowly, eyes locked on mine. โI wonโt run.โ โYou swear?โ
โI swear,โ Joey replied, tone laced with sincerity. โI wonโt leave you alone in this.โ
โThen thatโs all you need to say,โ I sobbed, nuzzling his cheek with mine. โBecause thatโs all I need to know.โ
