Chapter no 5 – โ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€ŒHOW THE OTHER HALF L I VE JOEY

Redeeming 6 (Boys of Tommen, #4)

SPENDINGย my Saturday night inside of a house that could have easily accommodated three of the one Iโ€™d grown up in, and surrounded by a bunch of people from Tommen College, wasย notย something I had ever anticipated happening.

The closest Iโ€™d ever come to their elite school was when I walked past the big iron gates on my way to a match. Now, somehow, I found myself slap bang in the middle of their fucked-up inner circle, watching on as a bunch of privileged private school boys got fucked up on high-grade skunk.

The captain these lads had been hellbent on loosening up hadnโ€™t bothered to show up tonight, but it was clear from most of their red-eyed, goofy-as- fuck expressions, that all thoughts of their captain had long since dwindled.

Clearly, there was no limit to the levels that I was willing to stoop for a couple of hundred quid.

Jesus.

The fact that my sister was supposed to start school with these people on Monday morning didnโ€™t exactly sit well with me.

Especially the big blond fucker with a penchant for dope, debauchery, and his friendโ€™s baby sister.

โ€œPut her down right this instant, Gerard Gibson,โ€ Shannonโ€™s curly-haired pal, Claire Biggs, instructed, as she stood on the last step of their impressive staircase, dressed up as the blonde from the Spice Girls, and pointed a finger at the big bollox attempting to waltz to the Vengaboysโ€™ย Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom!!ย with a pampered looking cat. โ€œDonโ€™t you dare hurt myโ€”โ€

โ€œPussy?โ€ he offered, and then made a ridiculous purring noise with his tongue. โ€œYou know that I would never hurt your pussy, Claire-bear.โ€

Yeah, he was a few crayons short of a full box.

โ€œI told you not to call me that in public,โ€ she protested with a huff.

โ€œAnd I told you not to wear that pink dress,โ€ the big lad shot back with a wolfish grin, as he set the cat down on the couch and prowled towards her. โ€œBut Iโ€™m so fucking thrilled that you didnโ€™t listen to me.โ€

โ€œAvert your eyes from my sister, fucker,โ€ Hughie warned, appearing from thin air to intercept his friend before he reached the staircase. โ€œWhat did I tell you about keeping your dick on the other side of the street.โ€

โ€œContrary to the many rumors going around about my magical dick, it doesnโ€™t yet possess the ability to un-attach itself from the rest of me, lad,โ€ he shot back, brows waggling, as he bopped and rocked around in a pair of pink board shorts and a Hawaii themed, floral shirt. โ€œSo, if Iโ€™m here, my dickโ€™s here.โ€

โ€œThen go home.โ€

โ€œNo way,โ€ he laughed. โ€œThis 90โ€™s party is my lovechild.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not a 90โ€™s anything, Gibs. Itโ€™s just a party, so tell that asshole on the decks to play something decent.โ€

โ€œNo. Itโ€™s my party and heโ€™ll play what I want him to play.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s my house.โ€ โ€œItโ€™s my playlist.โ€

โ€œThen at least go home and change your clothes. You look like a tool.โ€

โ€œAre you mental? Look at me. I make a beautiful Ken.โ€ โ€œBeautifully deranged, more like. Nobody else is dressed up, lad.โ€ โ€œMy lover is.โ€

โ€œYourย lover? Are you well? Sheโ€™s my sister, not yourย lover, asshole.โ€

โ€œI take it all back,โ€ Podge slurred, distracting me from their antics. Leaning heavily against my shoulder, he tossed back another shot of Jameson and grinned. โ€œThis was a fantastic fucking idea.โ€

โ€œWhereโ€™s Alec?โ€ I asked, roughly shrugging him off. I fucking hated being touched, and this drunk asshole knew it. I also detested the smell of whiskey. It did shit to my head. Made me feel on edge.

โ€œHe went upstairs with some posh girl with a huge rack,โ€ Podge replied with a huge grin, still leaning heavily against me. โ€œLad, these rugby-heads know how to throw a party.โ€ He waved a hand, gesturing to the mob of bodies surrounding us. โ€œThis is unreal, Joe.โ€ He pointed to where some older lad with speakers and decks set up in the far corner of the room had switched songs to 2Pacโ€™sย Changes.ย โ€œIโ€™ve never seen so much drink and food in my life.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s easy for them to have it,โ€ I replied bitterly, still nursing the same bottle of beer Iโ€™d been handed when I walked through the door. โ€œWhen they have their fathersโ€™ wallets to pay for it.โ€

โ€œAh, loosen up, Joe. Itโ€™s not their fault theyโ€™ve got a few bob in the bank,โ€ Podge chuckled, looking like something a Christopher Lee Dracula movie

shat out with the big bloodshot eyes on him. โ€œYou did good tonight.โ€ No, I did what I had to do to feed my family.

โ€œHave a smoke and relax,โ€ he encouraged, handing me another bottle of

beer from a nearby table. โ€œA few drinks and a smoke wonโ€™t hurt.โ€

I arched a brow and set it back down. โ€œComing from the fella who almost pissed himself when I told him that I was still smoking.โ€

โ€œYeah, well.โ€ He grinned at me and shrugged. โ€œIโ€™ve been reminded of the perks of being your best friend.โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€ I smirked. โ€œDamn straight, asshole.โ€

โ€œStay out of their medicine cabinet, though, ya hear?โ€ he warned, holding a finger up. โ€œAnd donโ€™t go losing the run of yourself.โ€ He reached up and slapped my chest. โ€œIf you get tempted to score, just think about the girl whose name youโ€™ve got tattooed over your heartโ€ฆโ€

โ€œBest friend or not, if you put your hands on me again, I will rip your arm off,โ€ I warned, batting his hand away. โ€œAnd if I wanted to get fucked up, thatโ€™s exactly what I would be doing, but Iโ€™m not. So, I donโ€™t need any lectures or advice from you, and I donโ€™t need any reminders of whatโ€™s at stake, either. Iโ€™m a big boy, Podge. I can handle my own shit. Iโ€™ve been doing it my whole life, so donโ€™t start trying to mother me, ya hear?โ€

โ€œI hear you, Joe,โ€ he chuckled good-naturedly, holding his hands up as he backed away. โ€œI hear you, lad.โ€

Jaw ticking, I watched as he slipped into the crowd, feeling pissed off and on edge.

This wasnโ€™t easy for me, and I needed him reminding me of that like I needed a hole in the head.

Fuck.

Depressed and on edge, I finished my bottle and set it down, refusing to pick up another. I didnโ€™t need the complications that I knew would follow.

โ€œBecause heโ€™s only using you,โ€ I heard someone say, and I turned my attention to where Hughie was in a heated discussion with another familiar blonde.

This one wasnโ€™t his sister Claire.

No, this girl was Shannonโ€™s other little friend.

I couldnโ€™t remember her name, but I had a feeling it was Lilly. Or maybe it was Izzy.

Either way, she was standing near the doorway, with her arms folded

across her chest glaring up at Hughie Biggs, who was glaring back at her, while he flailed his arms around in obvious exasperation. โ€œYou canโ€™t seriously be considering going upstairs with him.โ€

โ€œLike you give a shit,โ€ she continued to say. โ€œAt least Pierce doesnโ€™t act like Iโ€™m invisible when heโ€™s with his friends.โ€

โ€œYou know I give a shit,โ€ he was quick to counter. โ€œIf I didnโ€™t care, I wouldnโ€™tโ€”โ€

โ€œYou wouldnโ€™t what, Hugh?โ€ she cut him off by hissing. โ€œYou wouldnโ€™t treat me like an afterthought? Because, newsflash, asshole, thatโ€™sย exactlyย what youโ€™ve been doing.โ€

Taking it all in with sober eyes, I briefly considered telling them that if they were trying to conceal a hook up, then they were doing a pretty terrible job, before remembering these assholes were not my monkeys and this wasย notย my circus.

Shaking my head, I stepped around them and headed through the impressive kitchen until I found the back door.

Slipping outside, I ignored every other asshole in the back garden, and wandered over to the far end of the yard, sparking up a cigarette as I went.

Temptation was all around me and I needed to keep my head.

I had two weeks of torture put down and I sure as hell didnโ€™t plan on throwing it away for a piss up with a bunch of people who, in any other given circumstances, would cross the road to get away from me.

โ€œGot one of those to spare?โ€ a female voice asked, and I turned around to find Shannonโ€™s friend that had been fighting with Biggs moments before. โ€Remember me?โ€

โ€œJust about,โ€ I replied, rubbing my jaw. โ€œLilly Young, right?โ€ โ€œItโ€™s Lizzie,โ€ she corrected, unblinking. โ€œSo, can I have one?โ€ โ€œOne what?โ€

โ€œA cigarette.โ€ โ€œNo.โ€

Her blue eyes narrowed. โ€œWhy not?โ€

โ€œBecause you donโ€™t smoke,โ€ I replied coolly. โ€œAnd I donโ€™t share.โ€

She gave me a hard look, one I was only too willing to return, before relenting with a heavy exhale. โ€œI hate parties.โ€

โ€œThen why come?โ€ โ€œItโ€™s complicated.โ€ โ€œFair enough.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s it?โ€ She eyed me curiously. โ€œYouโ€™re not going to ask me why?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œHow come?โ€

I shrugged. โ€œBecause I donโ€™t care about your answer.โ€

โ€œHm.โ€ She tilted her head to one side, studying me with her blue eyes. โ€œYou donโ€™t belong here either.โ€

โ€œNo shit, Sherlock.โ€ โ€œThen whyโ€™d you come?โ€

I smirked. โ€œItโ€™s complicated.โ€

Her lips begrudgingly tipped up in a smile. โ€œYou know, I used to have an epic crush on you when I was younger.โ€ She didnโ€™t blush or blanch when she said it either. Girl had an impressive pair of balls on her. โ€œMost of the girls in our class had. You even overtook Leo DiCaprio for a bit โ€“ and that was during his Titanic superstardom stage.โ€ Shaking her head, she released another sigh before adding, โ€œWhich only proves that Iโ€™ve always been attracted to the worst kind of wrong for me.โ€

Frowning, I inhaled a deep drag, held it there just long enough to take the sting out of the pain in my chest, and then exhaled slowly, while I tried to think of what to say to this girl who, even though she clearly had a sharp tongue, didnโ€™t look like she could handle another kicking. โ€œFor a kid, you sound awfully cynical.โ€

She narrowed her blue eyes. โ€œIโ€™mย notย a kid.โ€

โ€œMaybe youโ€™re not.โ€ I shrugged and took another drag. โ€œBut youย areย friends with my baby sister, which means that you could be forty and youโ€™d still be a kid in my eyes.โ€

โ€œIf this is your attempt at letting me down gently then save your breath,โ€ she was quick to counter. โ€œI said that Iย usedย to have a crush on you, as inย pastย tense, as in not currently.โ€

โ€œWise decision,โ€ I chuckled, amused by her bitchiness. โ€œBest to stick with Leo.โ€

โ€œFunny.โ€ She rolled her eyes, tone flat. โ€œBesides, I know you hurl for Cork, and I donโ€™t like athletes anymore.โ€

โ€œAnd yet youโ€™re attending a party being thrown by your schoolโ€™s rugby team.โ€ I nodded. โ€œMakes perfect sense.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m here for Claire.โ€

โ€œBullshit,โ€ I corrected with a snort. โ€œYouโ€™re here for her brother.โ€ Her eyes widened. โ€œWhat are youโ€”โ€

โ€œLet me guess,โ€ I interrupted, amused. โ€œYouโ€™re fucking Biggs, and he

wonโ€™t commit, so youโ€™ve gone off with one of the lads on his team to get back at him?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™tโ€ฆ Itโ€™s notโ€ฆโ€ Her mouth fell open and she gaped in horror at me. โ€œYou need a better poker face.โ€

โ€œYou have it all wrong.โ€ โ€œI donโ€™t think I do.โ€ โ€œJoey, pleaseโ€”โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t worry,โ€ I cut her off with a wink. โ€œI donโ€™t talk.โ€

โ€œThereโ€™s nothing to talk about.โ€ She looked truly terrified now. โ€œBecause like I said, you have it all wrong.โ€

โ€œSureย I have.โ€

โ€œOh god. Please donโ€™t say anything, Joey.โ€ Swallowing deeply, she pressed a hand to her brow and groaned. โ€œHe has a girlfriend, and I have a…โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll tell you what, Lilly.โ€œ โ€œItโ€™s Lizzie.โ€

โ€œLizzie.โ€ Taking pity on her, I pulled a cigarette from my box, put it to

my lips and sparked it up, before holding it out for her. โ€œYou keep an eye on Shannon when she starts at your school next week, watch her back and keep any assholes who think about targeting her in line, and Iโ€™ll forget everything you think I haveย all wrong.โ€

โ€œI was planning on looking after Shannon, regardless,โ€ she replied, taking the cigarette and putting it to her lips.

โ€œAnd I was planning on keeping my mouth shut, regardless,โ€ I replied evenly. โ€œSo, it looks like we both win.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not a bad person,โ€ she was quick to point out, tone defensive. โ€œIโ€™m not a slut, either.โ€

โ€œI never said you were.โ€

โ€œYeah, but I know what youโ€™re thinking.โ€ I arched a brow. โ€œI really doubt that.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re thinking Iโ€™m a horrible snake to even consider going there with

another girlโ€™s fella, but you have no idea whatโ€™s really going on,โ€ she mumbled, red-faced. โ€œItโ€™s really,ย reallyย complicated. And messy.โ€ She exhaled a ragged breath before muttering, โ€œAnd a million other things.โ€

I shrugged. โ€œItโ€™s not my business.โ€

โ€œSo, thatโ€™s it?โ€ She eyed me warily. โ€œThatโ€™s all youโ€™re going to say?โ€

โ€œWhat else is there to say?โ€ I replied with a shrug. โ€œThe way I see it; youโ€™re not the first to get tangled up like this, and you wonโ€™t be the last. Either way, Iโ€™m no priest, so no need to offer your confession up to me. Not when Iโ€™ve done plenty worse than you.โ€

She arched a brow, reluctantly intrigued. โ€œWhen you sayย worse.โ€ I smirked. โ€œYouโ€™d need a bishop to take my confession.โ€
