SPENDINGย my Saturday night inside of a house that could have easily accommodated three of the one Iโd grown up in, and surrounded by a bunch of people from Tommen College, wasย notย something I had ever anticipated happening.
The closest Iโd ever come to their elite school was when I walked past the big iron gates on my way to a match. Now, somehow, I found myself slap bang in the middle of their fucked-up inner circle, watching on as a bunch of privileged private school boys got fucked up on high-grade skunk.
The captain these lads had been hellbent on loosening up hadnโt bothered to show up tonight, but it was clear from most of their red-eyed, goofy-as- fuck expressions, that all thoughts of their captain had long since dwindled.
Clearly, there was no limit to the levels that I was willing to stoop for a couple of hundred quid.
Jesus.
The fact that my sister was supposed to start school with these people on Monday morning didnโt exactly sit well with me.
Especially the big blond fucker with a penchant for dope, debauchery, and his friendโs baby sister.
โPut her down right this instant, Gerard Gibson,โ Shannonโs curly-haired pal, Claire Biggs, instructed, as she stood on the last step of their impressive staircase, dressed up as the blonde from the Spice Girls, and pointed a finger at the big bollox attempting to waltz to the Vengaboysโย Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom!!ย with a pampered looking cat. โDonโt you dare hurt myโโ
โPussy?โ he offered, and then made a ridiculous purring noise with his tongue. โYou know that I would never hurt your pussy, Claire-bear.โ
Yeah, he was a few crayons short of a full box.
โI told you not to call me that in public,โ she protested with a huff.
โAnd I told you not to wear that pink dress,โ the big lad shot back with a wolfish grin, as he set the cat down on the couch and prowled towards her. โBut Iโm so fucking thrilled that you didnโt listen to me.โ
โAvert your eyes from my sister, fucker,โ Hughie warned, appearing from thin air to intercept his friend before he reached the staircase. โWhat did I tell you about keeping your dick on the other side of the street.โ
โContrary to the many rumors going around about my magical dick, it doesnโt yet possess the ability to un-attach itself from the rest of me, lad,โ he shot back, brows waggling, as he bopped and rocked around in a pair of pink board shorts and a Hawaii themed, floral shirt. โSo, if Iโm here, my dickโs here.โ
โThen go home.โ
โNo way,โ he laughed. โThis 90โs party is my lovechild.โ
โItโs not a 90โs anything, Gibs. Itโs just a party, so tell that asshole on the decks to play something decent.โ
โNo. Itโs my party and heโll play what I want him to play.โ
โItโs my house.โ โItโs my playlist.โ
โThen at least go home and change your clothes. You look like a tool.โ
โAre you mental? Look at me. I make a beautiful Ken.โ โBeautifully deranged, more like. Nobody else is dressed up, lad.โ โMy lover is.โ
โYourย lover? Are you well? Sheโs my sister, not yourย lover, asshole.โ
โI take it all back,โ Podge slurred, distracting me from their antics. Leaning heavily against my shoulder, he tossed back another shot of Jameson and grinned. โThis was a fantastic fucking idea.โ
โWhereโs Alec?โ I asked, roughly shrugging him off. I fucking hated being touched, and this drunk asshole knew it. I also detested the smell of whiskey. It did shit to my head. Made me feel on edge.
โHe went upstairs with some posh girl with a huge rack,โ Podge replied with a huge grin, still leaning heavily against me. โLad, these rugby-heads know how to throw a party.โ He waved a hand, gesturing to the mob of bodies surrounding us. โThis is unreal, Joe.โ He pointed to where some older lad with speakers and decks set up in the far corner of the room had switched songs to 2Pacโsย Changes.ย โIโve never seen so much drink and food in my life.โ
โItโs easy for them to have it,โ I replied bitterly, still nursing the same bottle of beer Iโd been handed when I walked through the door. โWhen they have their fathersโ wallets to pay for it.โ
โAh, loosen up, Joe. Itโs not their fault theyโve got a few bob in the bank,โ Podge chuckled, looking like something a Christopher Lee Dracula movie
shat out with the big bloodshot eyes on him. โYou did good tonight.โ No, I did what I had to do to feed my family.
โHave a smoke and relax,โ he encouraged, handing me another bottle of
beer from a nearby table. โA few drinks and a smoke wonโt hurt.โ
I arched a brow and set it back down. โComing from the fella who almost pissed himself when I told him that I was still smoking.โ
โYeah, well.โ He grinned at me and shrugged. โIโve been reminded of the perks of being your best friend.โ
โYeah.โ I smirked. โDamn straight, asshole.โ
โStay out of their medicine cabinet, though, ya hear?โ he warned, holding a finger up. โAnd donโt go losing the run of yourself.โ He reached up and slapped my chest. โIf you get tempted to score, just think about the girl whose name youโve got tattooed over your heartโฆโ
โBest friend or not, if you put your hands on me again, I will rip your arm off,โ I warned, batting his hand away. โAnd if I wanted to get fucked up, thatโs exactly what I would be doing, but Iโm not. So, I donโt need any lectures or advice from you, and I donโt need any reminders of whatโs at stake, either. Iโm a big boy, Podge. I can handle my own shit. Iโve been doing it my whole life, so donโt start trying to mother me, ya hear?โ
โI hear you, Joe,โ he chuckled good-naturedly, holding his hands up as he backed away. โI hear you, lad.โ
Jaw ticking, I watched as he slipped into the crowd, feeling pissed off and on edge.
This wasnโt easy for me, and I needed him reminding me of that like I needed a hole in the head.
Fuck.
Depressed and on edge, I finished my bottle and set it down, refusing to pick up another. I didnโt need the complications that I knew would follow.
โBecause heโs only using you,โ I heard someone say, and I turned my attention to where Hughie was in a heated discussion with another familiar blonde.
This one wasnโt his sister Claire.
No, this girl was Shannonโs other little friend.
I couldnโt remember her name, but I had a feeling it was Lilly. Or maybe it was Izzy.
Either way, she was standing near the doorway, with her arms folded
across her chest glaring up at Hughie Biggs, who was glaring back at her, while he flailed his arms around in obvious exasperation. โYou canโt seriously be considering going upstairs with him.โ
โLike you give a shit,โ she continued to say. โAt least Pierce doesnโt act like Iโm invisible when heโs with his friends.โ
โYou know I give a shit,โ he was quick to counter. โIf I didnโt care, I wouldnโtโโ
โYou wouldnโt what, Hugh?โ she cut him off by hissing. โYou wouldnโt treat me like an afterthought? Because, newsflash, asshole, thatโsย exactlyย what youโve been doing.โ
Taking it all in with sober eyes, I briefly considered telling them that if they were trying to conceal a hook up, then they were doing a pretty terrible job, before remembering these assholes were not my monkeys and this wasย notย my circus.
Shaking my head, I stepped around them and headed through the impressive kitchen until I found the back door.
Slipping outside, I ignored every other asshole in the back garden, and wandered over to the far end of the yard, sparking up a cigarette as I went.
Temptation was all around me and I needed to keep my head.
I had two weeks of torture put down and I sure as hell didnโt plan on throwing it away for a piss up with a bunch of people who, in any other given circumstances, would cross the road to get away from me.
โGot one of those to spare?โ a female voice asked, and I turned around to find Shannonโs friend that had been fighting with Biggs moments before. โRemember me?โ
โJust about,โ I replied, rubbing my jaw. โLilly Young, right?โ โItโs Lizzie,โ she corrected, unblinking. โSo, can I have one?โ โOne what?โ
โA cigarette.โ โNo.โ
Her blue eyes narrowed. โWhy not?โ
โBecause you donโt smoke,โ I replied coolly. โAnd I donโt share.โ
She gave me a hard look, one I was only too willing to return, before relenting with a heavy exhale. โI hate parties.โ
โThen why come?โ โItโs complicated.โ โFair enough.โ
โThatโs it?โ She eyed me curiously. โYouโre not going to ask me why?โ
โNo.โ
โHow come?โ
I shrugged. โBecause I donโt care about your answer.โ
โHm.โ She tilted her head to one side, studying me with her blue eyes. โYou donโt belong here either.โ
โNo shit, Sherlock.โ โThen whyโd you come?โ
I smirked. โItโs complicated.โ
Her lips begrudgingly tipped up in a smile. โYou know, I used to have an epic crush on you when I was younger.โ She didnโt blush or blanch when she said it either. Girl had an impressive pair of balls on her. โMost of the girls in our class had. You even overtook Leo DiCaprio for a bit โ and that was during his Titanic superstardom stage.โ Shaking her head, she released another sigh before adding, โWhich only proves that Iโve always been attracted to the worst kind of wrong for me.โ
Frowning, I inhaled a deep drag, held it there just long enough to take the sting out of the pain in my chest, and then exhaled slowly, while I tried to think of what to say to this girl who, even though she clearly had a sharp tongue, didnโt look like she could handle another kicking. โFor a kid, you sound awfully cynical.โ
She narrowed her blue eyes. โIโmย notย a kid.โ
โMaybe youโre not.โ I shrugged and took another drag. โBut youย areย friends with my baby sister, which means that you could be forty and youโd still be a kid in my eyes.โ
โIf this is your attempt at letting me down gently then save your breath,โ she was quick to counter. โI said that Iย usedย to have a crush on you, as inย pastย tense, as in not currently.โ
โWise decision,โ I chuckled, amused by her bitchiness. โBest to stick with Leo.โ
โFunny.โ She rolled her eyes, tone flat. โBesides, I know you hurl for Cork, and I donโt like athletes anymore.โ
โAnd yet youโre attending a party being thrown by your schoolโs rugby team.โ I nodded. โMakes perfect sense.โ
โIโm here for Claire.โ
โBullshit,โ I corrected with a snort. โYouโre here for her brother.โ Her eyes widened. โWhat are youโโ
โLet me guess,โ I interrupted, amused. โYouโre fucking Biggs, and he
wonโt commit, so youโve gone off with one of the lads on his team to get back at him?โ
โI donโtโฆ Itโs notโฆโ Her mouth fell open and she gaped in horror at me. โYou need a better poker face.โ
โYou have it all wrong.โ โI donโt think I do.โ โJoey, pleaseโโ
โDonโt worry,โ I cut her off with a wink. โI donโt talk.โ
โThereโs nothing to talk about.โ She looked truly terrified now. โBecause like I said, you have it all wrong.โ
โSureย I have.โ
โOh god. Please donโt say anything, Joey.โ Swallowing deeply, she pressed a hand to her brow and groaned. โHe has a girlfriend, and I have a…โ
โIโll tell you what, Lilly.โ โItโs Lizzie.โ
โLizzie.โ Taking pity on her, I pulled a cigarette from my box, put it to
my lips and sparked it up, before holding it out for her. โYou keep an eye on Shannon when she starts at your school next week, watch her back and keep any assholes who think about targeting her in line, and Iโll forget everything you think I haveย all wrong.โ
โI was planning on looking after Shannon, regardless,โ she replied, taking the cigarette and putting it to her lips.
โAnd I was planning on keeping my mouth shut, regardless,โ I replied evenly. โSo, it looks like we both win.โ
โIโm not a bad person,โ she was quick to point out, tone defensive. โIโm not a slut, either.โ
โI never said you were.โ
โYeah, but I know what youโre thinking.โ I arched a brow. โI really doubt that.โ
โYouโre thinking Iโm a horrible snake to even consider going there with
another girlโs fella, but you have no idea whatโs really going on,โ she mumbled, red-faced. โItโs really,ย reallyย complicated. And messy.โ She exhaled a ragged breath before muttering, โAnd a million other things.โ
I shrugged. โItโs not my business.โ
โSo, thatโs it?โ She eyed me warily. โThatโs all youโre going to say?โ
โWhat else is there to say?โ I replied with a shrug. โThe way I see it; youโre not the first to get tangled up like this, and you wonโt be the last. Either way, Iโm no priest, so no need to offer your confession up to me. Not when Iโve done plenty worse than you.โ
She arched a brow, reluctantly intrigued. โWhen you sayย worse.โ I smirked. โYouโd need a bishop to take my confession.โ
