Chapter no 49 -โ€Œ โ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€ŒGOD LOVES A TRIER

Redeeming 6 (Boys of Tommen, #4)

BUT AOIFE LOVES JOEY

AOIFE

โ€œOKAY, ITโ€™S BEEN THREE WEEKS,โ€ย Casey declared on Tuesday morning during French, when our teacher, Mr. Brady, left the room. Snapping her book shut, she twisted in her seat to face me. โ€œTell me that todayโ€™s the day.โ€

โ€œYeah,โ€ I whispered, knees bopping restlessly under the table, as I kept my eyes glued to my boyfriendโ€™s back. โ€œTodayโ€™s the day.โ€

He was sitting two rows ahead of me with Neasa Murphy, slumped in his chair, looking mildly amused at whatever she was saying to him.

โ€œWould you stop glaring at her like she pissed in your cornflakes?โ€ Casey whisper-hissed, dragging my attention back to her, as she peeled my fingers off the pencil I was squeezing. โ€œHe has to sit with her. Itโ€™s assigned seating, babe.โ€

โ€œHe was with her before.โ€

โ€œSo? That was a million years ago.โ€ โ€œI hate her.โ€

โ€œNo, you donโ€™t,โ€ she scoffed. โ€œThatโ€™s your hormones talking.โ€

โ€œNo, I really do.โ€ I turned to look at my best friend. โ€œI hate everyone heโ€™s been with.โ€

โ€œThen you hate a lot of females in this classroom,โ€ Casey laughed. โ€œFunny.โ€

โ€œSo, youโ€™re really going to tell him?โ€

Ignoring the anxiety clawing at my throat, I nodded. โ€œTonight. When he comes over after work.โ€

โ€œOh, my Jesus, talk about a squeaky bum moment,โ€ she strangled out. โ€œDo you have a speech planned?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s more of aย โ€˜My birth control failed, youโ€™re going to be a daddy, please donโ€™t leave meโ€™ย rambling plea than a speech.โ€

โ€œAoif.โ€ She placed her hand on my arm. โ€œHeโ€™s not going to leave you.โ€ โ€œYeah?โ€ I blew out an anxious breath. โ€œI really hope youโ€™re right, Case.โ€

We were interrupted then by Charlie, who leaned over his desk behind us and tapped Caseyโ€™s shoulder. โ€œMack wants to know whatโ€™s happening with Alec.โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€

โ€œAlec,โ€ he repeated. โ€œAre you with him or something?โ€

Casey and I looked at each other in confusion before turning back to Charlie. โ€œIโ€™m notโ€””

โ€œWhy does Mack want to know?โ€ I quickly clamped a hand over my best friendโ€™s mouth and asked. โ€œWhatโ€™s it to him who Caseyโ€™s seeing?โ€

โ€œWhy do ya think?โ€ Charlie winked. โ€œHeโ€™s clearly still bananas about her.โ€

โ€œIs that so?โ€ I eyeballed her. โ€œDid you hear that, Case? Cha says that old Mackie boy is still bananas about you.โ€

โ€œYeah, well, you can tell Mack that Iโ€™m seeing someone,โ€ Casey replied, peeling my fingers off her face. โ€œSo, he can take his banana back to his side of town.โ€

โ€œAlec?โ€

โ€œNope.โ€

โ€œThen who are you seeing?โ€ Charlie asked, leaning in close.

โ€œThatโ€™s for me to know and you to find out,โ€ she replied, tapping her nose.

โ€œNo, seriously.โ€ I frowned. โ€œWho are you seeing?โ€

She gave me a look that saidย get with the programย before rolling her eyes. โ€œNow, off you go.โ€ Waving him away from us, she turned back in her seat, taking me with her. โ€œIโ€™m not seeing anyone, but he doesnโ€™t need to know that.โ€

โ€œBut you like Mack.โ€ โ€œMeh.โ€

โ€œAnd Alec?โ€

She shrugged. โ€œSo many boys, so little of sixth year left.โ€ โ€œYouโ€™re terrible,โ€ I laughed.

Another tap came, but this time it was on my shoulder.

โ€œYou rang,โ€ I said, mimicking Lurchโ€™s voice, as I turned in my seat to find Charlie looking at me expectantly. โ€œWhatโ€™s up, Cha?โ€

โ€œI have a friend who heard a rumor that you and Lynchy were on the outs.โ€ Smirking, he added, โ€œAnd my friend wants to know if there was any truth to it.โ€

โ€œOh, really.โ€ I grinned. โ€œAnd why would your friend want to know that?โ€

โ€œBecause my friend thinks you are hands down the best-looking girl at school.โ€

โ€œDoes your friend have a death wish?โ€ Casey laughed. โ€œBecause my friendโ€™s boyfriend will kill you dead, Cha. Dead, I tell you.โ€

โ€œSo, heโ€™s still yourโ€””

โ€œYou can tell your friend that Iโ€™m flattered, but Iโ€™m still very much taken.โ€

โ€œAnd you can also tell your friend thatย hisย friend has an impressive set of balls on him to attempt a steal on Joeyโ€™s Lynchโ€™s girlfriend,โ€ Casey snickered. โ€œI mean, seriously.โ€

Charlie shrugged sheepishly. โ€œIt was worth a shot.โ€

โ€œGod loves a trier,โ€ Casey agreed, eyes dancing with mischief. โ€œBut Aoife loves Joey.โ€

TAKINGย my sweet time returning to my last class of the day, after being excused to use the toilet, I dawdled outside the girls bathroom, admiring the latest aesthetic offering of art on display in the main hall, courtesy of the leaving cert art class.

Reluctant to return to my business class, because I had a handle on ABQโ€™s like I had a handle on my life, I dragged my heels, pausing every couple of moments to inspect a picture hanging on the walls, or pretending to read the latest newsletter.

When I passed the boys bathroom, and heard the sound of coughing, I felt myself halt in my tracks again, but this time, I wasnโ€™t lingering without

purpose.

No, because I recognized that cough.

Filled with mischief, I slipped inside the bathroom, tiptoeing past the row of empty cubicles. Ignoring the stench of urine coming from the disgustingly yellow-stained urinals, I reached the cubicle at the end, the one with access to the window. The door was slightly ajar, and I ever so gently pushed it inwards until I had just enough of a view to see Joey. However, any notions I had of mischief quickly died when my eyes took in the sight before me.

With one knee resting on the closed toilet lid, Joey leaned in close to the windowsill, and, with the rolled-up fiver in his hands, snorted a line of white powder up his nose.

Frozen in horror, and unable to make a single sound, I watched as he rested his elbows on the window, and dropped his head in his heads, sniffing and twitching his nose, as he exhaled a sigh of what sounded an awful lot like relief.

Minutes ticked by where I just stood there, watching as the tension in his shoulders slowly loosened and his body began to sway.

A small groan escaped his lips then, and he heaved himself closer to the window, resting his weight heavily against it now.

As his high took over and his body grew limp, I felt my heart shrivel up and die in my chest.

I couldnโ€™t go through this with him again. Not now there was a baby involved.

My hand moved to the slight swell of my stomach, and, for the first time since realizing the mess I was in, I felt a surge of something peculiar rise up

inside of me.

Something that felt an awful lot like protectiveness for the baby growing inside of me.

Something that felt an awful lot likeย love.

Something that grew hotter and fiercer with every breath I took.

The protective feeling was so strong, so dominant and potent, that it felt almost carnal in nature, as it eclipsed the fear that had kept me burying my head in the sand these past few weeks.

Iโ€™mย pregnant, I suddenly realized, as if it genuinely only registered in my brain at this very moment that Iย was, in fact, having a baby.

His baby, my mind chorused, as my eyes looked on in horror at the boy bombed out in the cubicle,ย youโ€™re havingย hisย baby.

Look atย him.

Look at what youโ€™ve attached yourself to.

Taking a minute to regain my composure, to absorb the multitude of feelings rushing through me, I cleared my throat and pushed the door in enough to let him know that I was there.

Swaying against the windowsill, Joey turned his head to look at me. โ€œMolloy,โ€ Joey slurred, mashing his lips together, as he squinted and

strained to focus on my face.

โ€œIโ€™m not doing this with you again.โ€

His brows slowly furrowed and he tilted his head to one side, clearly trying to make sense of my words in the fog of his mind. It took him longer

than usual to register what I had said before he slowly shook his head. โ€œItโ€™s not what it looks like.โ€

โ€œOh yeah, because Iโ€™ve clearly read the room all wrong,โ€ I choked out, gesturing wildly to where he was slumped. โ€œIย canโ€™t.โ€ I shook my head, feeling the threat of my emotions brimming to the surface, desperate to explode out of me. โ€œIย canโ€™tย go through this with you again.โ€

โ€œThen keep walking,โ€ he mumbled, still swaying unsteadily, as he tried to straighten himself up, only to fail miserably and land on the closed toilet. โ€œBecause I am what I am.โ€

His words were like a slap across the face and I flinched. โ€œYou are what you are?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€ Shaking his head, he tried to climb to his feet again, and this time, he was successful. โ€œSo just walk the fuck away, Molloy.โ€

Ouch.

โ€œYouโ€™re telling me to walk away when you canโ€™t even walk a straight line.โ€ I narrowed my eyes in disgust. โ€œLook at the state of you.โ€

โ€œYou said that you canโ€™t do this with me again,โ€ he slurred, as he half- walked, half- staggered out of the cubicle, reaching for the wall to steady himself when his balance went. โ€œBut itโ€™s the same for me.โ€ Brows furrowed, he shook his head again, looking completely spaced out, as he tried and failed to focus on my face. โ€œI canโ€™t do this with you, either.โ€

Forget being slapped by his words; I was beingย stabbedย by them. โ€œWhat are you saying?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m saying I should have stayed the fuck away when we ended it at Christmas,โ€ he slurred, aiming his words at my heart like bullets. โ€œInstead of

dragging this bullshit out for another three months.โ€

โ€œAnd I presume this bullshit youโ€™re referring to is me?โ€ I swallowed down the lump in my throat before hissing, โ€œWell, fuck you, Joey Lynch.โ€

I turned around to leave then, only to halt in my tracks when his arm came around my waist, pulling me back against his chest.

โ€œIโ€™m sorry.โ€ He exhaled a heavy breath and tightened his arm around my body. โ€œI fucked up.โ€

โ€œYeah, you did,โ€ I squeezed out, trembling all over, as I resisted the urge to sag against him, because, letโ€™s face it, he could barely hold himself up in this moment. โ€œYouโ€™re a fucking asshole.โ€

โ€œI know.โ€ A pained groan escaped him and he dropped his head to rest on my shoulder. โ€œI know, baby.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re hurting me.โ€

He groaned in pain. โ€œShh, stop saying that.โ€ โ€œThisย hurtsย me, Joey.โ€

Another pained groan escaped his lips. โ€œNo, no, no, I would never hurt

you.โ€

โ€œYou hurt yourself and that’s the same thing,โ€ I choked out. โ€œBecause when you hurt, I hurt. When you burn, I go down in flames with you. We’re entwined, Joe. We’re mirrors. Donโ€™t you get that by now?โ€

โ€œAh fuck.โ€ Trembling violently, he pulled me closer. โ€œIโ€™m sorry for hurting ya, Molloy.โ€

โ€œListen to me, Joe; I really need you to sort your shit out, okay?โ€ Shivering when I felt his lips brush against my ear, I clenched my eyes shut and tried to steady my nerves. โ€œBecause remember when I said I didnโ€™t need

you before?โ€ I clenched my eyes shut and squeezed out, โ€œWell, I definitely need you now, okay?โ€

โ€œNo, you donโ€™t,โ€ he mumbled, as his hand moved to splay over my stomach, causing everything inside of me to twist up in knots. โ€œIโ€™m the bullshit, Molloy. Iโ€™m the fucking bullshit in this relationship. You bring all the good, and I bring all the bad.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not true.โ€ โ€œIt is.โ€

โ€œRegardless,โ€ I croaked out. โ€œI need you to draw a line under whatever

the hell this is, and come back to me, okay? Because Iโ€™m, ahโ€ฆโ€ Exhaling a ragged breath, I let my head fall back and stared up at the ceiling as I tried to find the words. โ€œIโ€™m having a โ€“ I meanย weโ€™reย havingโ€ฆโ€ย Ugh. Shivering violently, I practically spat the words, โ€œa baby,โ€ out of my mouth in a breathy rush.

โ€A baby,โ€ he repeated slowly, voice slurred. โ€œWhereโ€™s the baby?โ€

โ€œIn here,โ€ I croaked out, reaching down to cover the hand he had splayed over my belly.

โ€œIn you?โ€

With my entire body rigid with tension, I forced a small nod. โ€œWhatโ€™s it doing in there?โ€

โ€œYou put it there, Joe.โ€

โ€œI did?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€ I blew out a shaky breath. โ€œYou did.โ€

โ€œWell shit,โ€ he slurred, nuzzling my neck with his nose. โ€œIโ€™m sorry, Molloy. I didnโ€™t mean to.โ€

โ€œAre you mad?โ€ โ€œHm?โ€

โ€œMad, Joe,โ€ I repeated, swallowing down a surge of hysteria. โ€œAre you

mad?โ€

โ€œNo, Iโ€™m not mad,โ€ he murmured drowsily. โ€œAre you hearing me?โ€

โ€œHm?โ€

โ€œJoe?โ€

โ€œHm?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ll remember this, right?โ€ Turning around to face him, I cupped his face between my hands, and forced him to look at me. โ€œThis conversation.โ€ I reiterated when he didnโ€™t respond. When his black eyes stared straight through me. โ€œMe?โ€

โ€œSure.โ€ Hooking an arm around my waist, he, once again, buried his face in my neck and released a sigh of contentment. โ€œYou smell like home.โ€

This was pointless. He wasnโ€™t here.

At least, his mind wasnโ€™t present.

โ€œCome on,โ€ I cleared my throat and said, โ€œIโ€™ll take you somewhere to sleep it off.โ€

โ€œI thought you were done with me,โ€ he replied, pressing the softest of kisses to my neck. โ€œI thought he took you away from me.โ€ Exhaling a pained

groan, he buried his face in my neck. โ€œIโ€™ve fucked it again, Molloy.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not done with you, Joe,โ€ I squeezed out, shivering. โ€œAnd itโ€™s okay.

Youโ€™ll be okay.โ€

โ€œSo will you, Molloy.โ€ His arms tightened around my body, and even in his altered state of mind, he somehow managed to say the right thing. โ€œBecause Iโ€™ll look after the both of you.โ€

My breath hitched. โ€œYou promise?โ€ He nodded. โ€œI promise.โ€

Moments later, Joeyโ€™s legs gave out beneath him, and he went crashing to

the floor.
