Chapter no 35 -โ€Œ โ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€ŒREVELATIONS AND RUGBY BOYS

Redeeming 6 (Boys of Tommen, #4)

โ€ŒREVELATIONS AND RUGBY BOYS

AOIFE

NEITHER ONE OFย Joeyโ€™s parents had returned to the house by the following night.

Alone to bear the huge weight of responsibility they had unceremoniously dropped on his shoulders, I had tried to help as he, once again, parented his siblings with a proficiency a grown adult would envy.

Going from hauling them around to their extracurricular activities, to cooking and cleaning up after them, and then bath-time to bedtime; it was exhausting watching him go through the motions.

No wonder he would rather throw himself into traffic than have a child, I thought to myself,ย he already has four.

When Joey eventually did sit down, a little after eleven, looking bone- weary and close to breaking point, the very last thing I wanted to do was give him that push.

Slumped at the kitchen table, he let his head rest in his hands and exhaled a heavy sigh. โ€œPretty shit date night, huh, Molloy?โ€

โ€œOh, I donโ€™t know.โ€ Walking over to where he was sitting, I set two mugs of coffee down and wrapped my arms around him from behind. โ€œI wouldnโ€™t

say it was that terrible,โ€ I replied, pressing a kiss to the side of his neck. โ€œI mean, the companyโ€™s pretty epic.โ€

Grunting in response, he reached a hand up and gave mine a squeeze.

โ€œSo.โ€ Taking the seat next to his, I reached for my mug and blew the rim before taking a sip. โ€œWhatโ€™s the plan?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t have one,โ€ he admitted honestly, reaching for his mug. โ€œI have no idea what Iโ€™m doing, or how long Iโ€™ll have to do it for.โ€

I thought about what he said for a long time before saying, โ€œI think youโ€™re quite possibly the most incredible human being Iโ€™ve ever known.โ€

He shook his head and chuckled. โ€œFuck off.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve never meant anything more in my life,โ€ I urged. โ€œWho you are? What you do? The knocks youโ€™ve taken? The blows you continue to receive? How hard you love those kids? How much you sacrifice so that they donโ€™t have to?โ€ I shook my head. โ€œItโ€™s mind-blowing, Joe. Your selflessness is staggering.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t say shit like that, Molloy,โ€ he muttered, taking a swig of his coffee.

โ€œWhy not?โ€ I pressed. โ€œAre you afraid someone might hear me and realize how amazing you are, too?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m far from amazing,โ€ he replied quietly, brows furrowed. โ€œSeriously. Donโ€™t put me on a pedestal. I wasnโ€™t built for one. Iโ€™ll only end up letting you down.โ€

โ€œIโ€™d say youโ€™re doing a pretty good job of doing the opposite,โ€ I offered. โ€œIโ€™m so proud of you, Joe.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t be proud of me, Molloy,โ€ he bit out. โ€œDonโ€™t be. Because Iโ€™m not better. Iโ€™m not cured.โ€ He blew out an agitated breath. โ€œIโ€™m justโ€ฆโ€

โ€œTrying?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€ Shoulders slumping, he nodded slowly. โ€œTrying.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s enough for me,โ€ I told him, voice thick with emotion. โ€œYouโ€™reย enough for me.โ€

โ€œI need to talk to you about something,โ€ he said then, expelling another frustrated breath. โ€œSomething important that happened today at the GAA grounds.โ€

โ€œYeah,โ€ I agreed shakily. โ€œI need to talk to you about something important, too.โ€

โ€œHey guys.โ€

It was at that exact moment that Shannon walked into the kitchen, causing us both to turn away from the other in relief.

โ€œHowโ€™s the face, Shan?โ€ Joey asked, eyes trailing over the bruises. โ€œJesus.โ€

I looked at her, taking in the sight of her black eye and winced, feeling sick to my stomach.

โ€œItโ€™s okay Joe,โ€ she told him, offering him a weary smile. โ€œIt looks worse than it feels.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m so fucking sorry, Shan.โ€ He dropped his head in shame. โ€œI should have been here.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not your fault,โ€ she told him before I could. โ€œNone of what happened last night was your fault. Youโ€™re entitled to have a life, Joey.โ€

Yeah, he was, but that didnโ€™t make it any easier for him.

โ€œDid you manage to get Sean to go back to sleep?โ€ I asked, tone soft. โ€œFinally,โ€ Shannon replied. โ€œTadhg and Ollie are out for the count, but

Sean? God, heโ€™s in an awful way over Mam. He was sobbing his heart out for

hours. He ended up crying himself to sleep.โ€

โ€œFucking cunts,โ€ Joey choked out, vibrating with tension again. โ€œJoe,โ€ I whispered. โ€œDonโ€™t say that.โ€

โ€œSay what?โ€ he argued โ€œThe truth? Because thatโ€™s what they are; a pack of fucking cunts.โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s still your mother,โ€ I said, not because I didnโ€™t feel the same way as he did. I simply knew that his words, no matter how true or sincere, would haunt him later, because his mother held power over him in a way that I could never understand.

โ€œSheโ€™s worse than him,โ€ he snapped, running a hand through his hair. โ€œLeaving those kids here on their own. She could pick up the phone and talk to the boys, but no, like always, she runs and buries her head in the sand.โ€

Yes, sheย wasย worse than him, but Joey didnโ€™t really feel that way. He was anxious and frightened, and feeling cornered.

He was reacting to his trauma by using his words as bullets.

Same as always.

But those bullets were made of buckshot that splintered and ricocheted through him, too.

โ€œLetโ€™s see what weโ€™re dealing with,โ€ he said then, emptying his pockets on the kitchen table. “I donโ€™t get paid again until next week. Which leaves us

with exactlyโ€ฆโ€ His voice trailed off as he counted his cash and stacked a few rogue coins. โ€œEighty-seven euro and thirty cents for the next six days.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s good, right?โ€ โ€œIt should work.โ€

โ€œYou know Iโ€™d help if I could,โ€ Shannon blurted out, looking guilty. โ€œBut

he wonโ€™t let me get a job.โ€

โ€œStop. Donโ€™t even think about taking on blame for this, Shan,โ€ Joey warned, holding a hand up. And then, with a wince, he added, โ€œCheck the fridge for me, will ya?โ€ When she obliged, showing us that it was completely bare, I watched as my boyfriend balled his hands into fists and growled. โ€œFucking cunts.โ€

โ€œThe cupboards are the same,โ€ Shannon said quietly. โ€œMam usually does the shopping on Saturday.”

“Usually,” Joey sneered, hands in his hair as he slumped over the table, staring down at the stacked coins.

โ€œShe wouldnโ€™t leave like this, Joe,โ€ Shannon offered quietly, worrying on her lip. โ€œSheโ€™d never leave us without the shopping.โ€

โ€œWell, she did,โ€ Joey shot back, tone hot and full of resentment. โ€œFuck it; itโ€™s grand. Weโ€™ll manage.โ€

โ€œYeah?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

โ€œOkay,โ€ his sister replied, looking upset and sounding unconvinced.

โ€œIโ€™ll give Mark a buzz in the morning,โ€ Joey offered then. โ€œHe has a conservatory job lined up in the city next week. Iโ€™ll ask if he needs a laborer.โ€

โ€œNo way,โ€ I argued. Mark was one of Dadโ€™s clients that used the garage. Every time he came in for a service, he tried to poach Joey to work construction for him. It drove my father crazy. โ€œYou canโ€™t miss school. Itโ€™s the leaving cert.โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ he replied, tone hard and unyielding. โ€œI canโ€™t let the kids go hungry. And God only knows when that bitch will come back.โ€

โ€œJoe, I can help withโ€”โ€

โ€œI am not taking your money, Aoife,โ€ he all but spat, looking mortally offended at the very thought. โ€œSo, please donโ€™t offer.โ€

โ€œJoey.โ€ I shook my head, feeling at a loss. โ€œIย wantย to help you.โ€

โ€œAnd I love you for that, but Iโ€™m not taking handouts from my girlfriend.โ€ The look on his face assured me that the topic of conversation, for him,

was over and done with.

โ€œDo you know where she is?โ€ I asked instead. โ€œYour mam, I mean?โ€

โ€œI presume sheโ€™s gone to find him,โ€ Shannon replied, looking so small and lost.

โ€œOkay, donโ€™t bite my head off for this,โ€ I said, choosing my words carefully, fully aware that I was poking a bear. โ€œBut should you maybe think about calling in the authorities?โ€

Joey glared at me. Shannon gaped in horror.

โ€œThey canโ€™t keep doing this to you,โ€ I tried to persuade, feeling sick to my stomach, and hating the look of betrayal in their eyes as they looked at me. โ€œAnd youโ€™re both here alone looking after three small children.โ€ I shook my head. โ€œItโ€™s not right or fair on any of you.โ€

โ€œNo, itโ€™s not right or fair on us, but Shannon and I have been down that road before and thereโ€™s no fucking way that weโ€™re going back there,โ€ Joey blurted out, stunning me.

Back there?

Back where?

โ€œJoey!โ€ Shannon hissed, horrified that he spoke so freely around me.

โ€œLook at us, Shan,โ€ he replied wearily. โ€œShe can already see how fucked up we are!โ€

โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€ I asked, giving my boyfriend my full attention. โ€œBack where? What are you saying, Joe?โ€

โ€œWhen we were small, before the boys were born, when it was just Darren, Shannon, and myself, the three of us were put into care for six months,โ€ he blew my mind by revealing.

โ€œOh my god.โ€ My heart seized in my chest. โ€œYou never told me that.โ€

โ€œYeah, well, itโ€™s not something I go around talking about. Besides, I was only six at the time,โ€ he muttered, dragging a hand through his hair. โ€œShan was three. Mam placed us in voluntary care โ€“ said she was tooย sickย to care for us at the time.โ€ His tone was dripping with disgust as he spoke. โ€œDropped us off and walked the fuck away. Shannon and I got lucky. We were placed together with a nice family. Darren was eleven at the time and wasnโ€™t so lucky.โ€

โ€œJoe, please donโ€™t,โ€ I heard his sister say, pleading with him to block me out of their world.

โ€œHe was sent to a care home where things happened to him,โ€ Joey continued, giving me his truth. โ€œThings that arenโ€™t supposed to happen to

children.โ€

โ€œAre you saying he wasโ€ฆโ€ He nodded.

I felt my hand shoot up to cover my mouth; a knee-jerk reaction to hearing something so incomprehensible. โ€œOhโ€”โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t,โ€ he warned, holding a shaky hand up. โ€œIt didnโ€™t happen to me.โ€ โ€œI know,โ€ I choked out, reaching for his hand. โ€œI justโ€ฆitโ€™s awful.โ€

โ€œAnyway, when Mamโ€™s health improved, she went to court and managed to get us back,โ€ he explained, brushing my sympathy aside. โ€œIt all came out in court about what had happened in that care home to my brother, and because sheโ€™d voluntarily given us up, because of health problems, she was somehow re-awarded custody.โ€

โ€œOh my god.โ€

Joey shrugged. โ€œDarren was never the same again, and neither was our father.โ€ Brows furrowing, he scratched his chin before adding, โ€œHe actually wasnโ€™t too bad of a guy before that. But after it all came out about Darren; the old man lost his fucking mind. He couldnโ€™t get over it and turned to the drink worse than ever. Got this ridiculous fucking notion into his head that what happened to Darren had somehow turned him.โ€ Joey shook his head. โ€œHad he paid an ounce of attention to us growing up then he would have known better.โ€

Reeling.

I was completely reeling. It all made sense now.

Jesus.

โ€œI donโ€™t know what to say,โ€ I confessed.

โ€œItโ€™s not right what happens in this house,โ€ he said, clearing his throat and drumming his fingers on the table. โ€œBut itโ€™s better than whatโ€™s out there in some of those care homes. Thereโ€™s no fucking way Iโ€™m letting my sister and brothers go into care. No goddamn way. At least when theyโ€™re here, theyโ€™re all in one place, and I can keep them somewhat safe.โ€

The irrational fear he had about the authorities finding out the truth wasnโ€™t so irrational after all.

It was totally justified in his mind. In all of their minds.

Because the Lynch children had been let down by both the state and their

parents in all of the worst possible ways.

โ€œDo you guys have someone you can call?โ€ I heard myself ask. โ€œA relative or family member?โ€

โ€œNanny is eighty-one,โ€ Shannon explained. โ€œSheโ€™s too old and fragile to

โ€”โ€

it.โ€

โ€œMyself and Shannon have each other,โ€ Joey cut her off, tone flat. โ€œThatโ€™s โ€œNot anymore,โ€ I replied, squeezing his hand. โ€œYou have me.โ€ I looked at

his baby sister and smiled sadly. โ€œAll of you.โ€

They were both quiet for a long moment before Joey snatched my hand up. โ€œChrist,โ€ he muttered, pressing a kiss to my knuckles. โ€œI love you.โ€

This was the first time that Joey had ever openly admitted his feelings in front of another person, and I felt the gravity of his admission in the deepest part of my heart.

โ€œOkay.โ€ Standing up before I collapsed in a heap and cried in sadness for them, I clapped my hands together and smiled brightly. โ€œI amย starving, and I know you both must be, too. So, Iโ€™m going to make a food run to the chipper and it will be my treat.โ€

โ€œAoife,โ€ Joey began to say. โ€œI told youโ€”โ€

โ€œMyย treat,โ€ I warned, cutting him off, and casting him a warning glare. He could fight with me about everything else, but not this. โ€œNow, are you coming with me?โ€

โ€œYeah, Iโ€™ll come,โ€ he muttered, rising to his feet. โ€œYouโ€™re not driving around town in the middle of the night by yourself.โ€

โ€œWELL, at least youโ€™re finally eating again,โ€ Joey noted, half an hour later, as we sat in one of the empty booths at the local chipper, scarfing down a monster-sized bag of chips. โ€œYou had me worried for a while there.โ€

โ€œBelieve me, Joe, taking into account the amount of crap going on in your life right now, my appetite is the least of your worries,โ€ I assured him, dabbing a chip in mayonnaise before popping it into my mouth.

โ€œKevโ€™s right,โ€ he mused, eyeing me curiously. โ€œThis new-found love of mayonnaise is weird as fuck, baby.โ€

Cheeks flushing, I averted my eyes from his, both unwilling and unable to delve deeper into the origins of my new-found cravings.

That was a conversation for another day.

A day when your boyfriendโ€™s life isnโ€™t unraveling around him.

โ€œShould we head back?โ€ I asked, changing the subject. โ€œTo the kids?โ€ He shrugged. โ€œProbably.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ I asked, eyeing him warily when he continued to stare at me, making no move to leave. โ€œHave I got something on my face?โ€

He shook his head slowly. โ€œIโ€™m just thinking.โ€

Oh shit.

โ€œAbout what?โ€

โ€œHow different you look.โ€

Oh, double shit.

โ€œDifferent how?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not sure,โ€ he mused, tilting his head to one side, studying me with razor-sharp eyes. โ€œBut you do.โ€

โ€œIs that a bad thing?โ€ I chuckled nervously.

โ€œNothing about the way you look is ever bad, Molloy,โ€ he replied, tone thoughtful. โ€œYou just look sort of shiny.โ€

I swallowed deeply. โ€œShiny?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€ He nodded. โ€œKind of like youโ€™re glowing.โ€

That would be your baby.

โ€œThat would be my halo,โ€ I joked, as I quickly stood up and grabbed all of our empty food wrappings. Walking over to the bin, I tossed our rubbish inside and quickly wiped my hands together. โ€œItโ€™s shinier than yours, remember?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s a good look,โ€ he assured me, pulling me close to give my ass a squeeze, before leading us out the door. โ€œVery sexy.โ€

โ€œJoe.โ€ I couldnโ€™t repress the illicit shiver that rolled through me if I tried. โ€œDonโ€™t.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t what?โ€ he purred, pushing me up against the wall outside. โ€œDonโ€™t tell my girlfriend that I think sheโ€™s sexy as fuck?โ€ Pinning me with his hips, he cupped my face in his hands and kissed me hard. โ€œYou drive me crazy,โ€ he growled against my lips. โ€œYou twist me up in knots, queen.โ€

โ€œRight back at you, stud,โ€ I breathed, relinquishing all power over to him, as I wrapped my arms around his neck and pulled him closer.

โ€œHow do you feel about getting naked tonight?โ€ he said against my lips. โ€œJoe, Iโ€™mโ€ฆโ€œ I exhaled a ragged breath. โ€œIโ€™mโ€”โ€

โ€œWhatever it is, I donโ€™t care,โ€ he cut me off by saying. โ€œI need in you so

fucking bad, Molloy.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know who you bleeding are!โ€ A nearby voice boomed, and we both turned our heads in unison to see an absolute giant of a boy slumped against the glass front of the chipper, talkingย atย his phone, while he inhaled an abnormal number of burgers. โ€œI donโ€™t know any bleeding King Clit!โ€

โ€œWell shit,โ€ Joey mused, stepping back. โ€œThatโ€™s him.โ€ โ€œWho?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s the lad Shannon has her eye on.โ€

โ€œThe one you said beat up Ciara Maloneyโ€™s boyfriend?โ€ โ€œThatโ€™s the one.โ€

โ€œWell, go Shannon,โ€ I said, taking in the sight of the ridiculously attractive boy, who was making a ridiculouslyย unattractiveย attempt at swallowing a quarter pounder in two bites. โ€œHeโ€™s a little ridey, isnโ€™t he?โ€

Joey snorted in disgust.

โ€œDonโ€™t worry,โ€ I teased, patting his chest. โ€œThe steroid-head look doesnโ€™t appeal to me.โ€

โ€œNo?โ€

โ€œNope.โ€ Grinning up at him, I added, โ€œIโ€™m more into the lean, mean, cocaine snorting machine type.โ€

He smirked. โ€œFunny.โ€ โ€œLetโ€™s go say hi.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ Joey gaped at me like Iโ€™d grown three heads. โ€œWhy would we sayย hi?โ€

โ€œBecause he could be your future brother-in-law.โ€ His brows furrowed. โ€œLike fuck.โ€

โ€œCome on,โ€ I laughed, catching ahold of his hand. โ€œLive a little โ€“ but be nice about it. Donโ€™t even think about scaring him off your sister.โ€

โ€œShe could do better.โ€

โ€œShe could do a lot worse,โ€ I laughed. โ€œGo on, Joe. Go and say hi to him.โ€

He gaped at me. โ€œWhy me?โ€

I shrugged. โ€œBecause sheโ€™s your sister, not mine.โ€ โ€œSo?โ€

โ€œSo, shut up and do it already!โ€

โ€œWhy am I constantly being ruled by the women in my life?โ€ Joey muttered, trailing after me. โ€Johnny Kavanagh?โ€

โ€œNo pictures tonight, kids,โ€ the boy replied, shoulders slumped. โ€œJohnnyโ€™s on a time-out.โ€

Joey gave me a look that saidย what a dickhead.

I gave him an encouraging nod.

โ€œI spoke to you on the phone the other week,โ€ Joey offered then, giving me a pointed look. โ€œYou know my sister, Shannon. You dropped her home.โ€

The boyโ€™s attention quickly sparked to life at the sound of Shannonโ€™s name, and I watched the fog dissipate from his steel blue eyes.

โ€œYouโ€™re the hurler.โ€ Johnny straightened his brick shit-house shoulders. โ€œJoey.โ€ Smiling proudly to himself, he added, โ€œShannon like the river, and Joey the hurler.โ€

Joey gave me aย what the fuckย look.

I choked out a laugh in response. โ€œLike the river?โ€ I grinned. โ€œGod, how much have you had to drink?โ€

โ€œA river load by the looks of it,โ€ Joey said dryly, nudging my shoulder with his. โ€œDo you think you should head home? You look fairly well oiled, lad.โ€

โ€œWould if I could,โ€ Johnny grumbled, looking a little lost. โ€œNo taxi.โ€

I opened my mouth to speak when Joey shook his head, giving me a warning look that saidย donโ€™t do it.

โ€œSure we could give you a lift home, couldnโ€™t we,ย babe?โ€ I said, doing it anyway, and reveling in theย fuck youย expression on his face. โ€œWeโ€™re only parked down the road.โ€

โ€œThat would be great,โ€ Johnny replied, voice slurred, but eyes full of relief. โ€œThanks.โ€

โ€œYeah, sure,โ€ Joey said flatly. โ€œNoย problem.โ€

I snickered.

Joey glared at me.

I beamed back at him.

This would be fun.

โ€œIโ€™m Aoife Molloy, by the way,โ€ I said, amused at how this giant of a boy tried and failed to walk a straight line down the footpath towards the car. Rounding the car, I yanked the door open and snickered, โ€œJoey theย hurlerโ€™sย girlfriend,โ€ before climbing inside.

โ€œNice to meet you,โ€ Johnny replied, manners impeccable, even though he was having a hard time keeping himself upright.

โ€œThree-door,โ€ Joey explained, gesturing for our passenger to maneuver over his seat to get into the back. โ€œYouโ€™re going to have to climb into the back.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s fine, lad,โ€ Johnny replied ever so politely.

And then I watched as, quite possibly, the biggest boy Iโ€™d ever seen in my life tried and failed to wedge himself into the backseat of my poor Opel Corsa.

Rolling his eyes, Joey shoved him into the back seat with an impatient, โ€œfor fuckโ€™s sake,โ€ growl.

โ€œChrist,โ€ Johnny muttered when he was inside, taking up the entire back row of my car with his shoulders alone.

Climbing into the driverโ€™s seat, Joey shoved his seat back as far as it would go, causing the big lad in the back to wheeze out a breath. โ€œYou good?โ€

โ€œAll good,โ€ Johnny strangled out, clearly crushed. โ€œThanks again for the lift.โ€

โ€œNo problem.โ€ Joey leaned in close and mouthed the wordsย youโ€™re dead

before brushing a quick peck to my lips. โ€œWhere are we heading?โ€

โ€œAbout four miles the other side of Tommen College,โ€ Johnny slurred. โ€œHead out the main road for the city. Iโ€™ll call the turn offs when we get to them.โ€

Joey had just pulled onto the road when he had to slam on the brakes when a big, blond bastard all but threw himself on the bonnet of my car.

โ€œWhat the fuck?โ€ we both roared in unison, gaping at the lunatic hugging my car like he was superman.

โ€œGet off the car, asshole!โ€ Joey roared, rolling down his window.

โ€œYouโ€™re stealing my center! Give him back,โ€ the boy called out, coming around to the side of the car to poke his head through the driverโ€™s window. โ€œHey, Cap, howโ€™s it going?โ€ he said then, smiling into the backseat at Johnny. โ€œIโ€™ve been looking everywhere for you.โ€

Joey and I looked at each other, instantly recognizing the mad bastard as none other than Gibsie Gibberson or whatever his name was from the Tommen party.

โ€œAnd this clown is?โ€ my boyfriend asked, knowing full well who he was.

The look he gave me told me toย go with it.

โ€œHeโ€™s my flanker,โ€ Johnny replied with a groan, as he leaned between the seats and hissed, โ€œGibs, what the fuck are you doing, lad? Youโ€™re supposed to be gone home with Hughie.โ€

Joey and I looked at each other again, and I knew he was thinking the same thing I was when we mouthed the wordย champagneย in unison.

Aw, crap.

โ€œThe Gards pulled him over for tax and insurance,โ€ Gibsie declared, clearly intoxicated, as he staggered and swayed on his feet.

โ€œSo?โ€ Johnny hissed. โ€œHughieโ€™s above board.โ€

โ€œHe looked at me, Johnny! He shone his big fucking torch right in my eyes,โ€ Gibsie slurred, wide-eyed. โ€œI panicked and jumped out of the car. Iโ€™ve been running around town ever since. I tried to call you but you kept cutting me off.

โ€œYouโ€™reย King Clit?โ€

โ€œOh yeah. I forgot about that.โ€ โ€œWhatโ€™s Hughie down as?โ€ โ€œGinger pubes.โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s blond.โ€

โ€œHis girlfriend isnโ€™t.โ€ โ€œJesus Christ, Gibs.โ€

โ€œWhat do you want me to do with him?โ€ Joey asked, sounding bored, while I was thoroughly amused by their antics.

โ€œI should probably bring him back to my place,โ€ Johnny muttered, rubbing his jaw. โ€œOr to a secured hospital.โ€

โ€œSee what bullshit you got us into?โ€ Joey told me under his breath, before throwing the door open and climbing out to move his seat forward.

With none of the grace or consideration his friend had shown for the shocks of my car, Gibsie threw himself into the backseat, sprawling out on top of his friendโ€™s lap.

โ€œFuck!โ€

โ€œShit, man, did I get your dick? Iโ€™ll get ice for your balls when we get home.โ€

โ€œGet. Off. Me.โ€

โ€œChrist, this is the tightest hole Iโ€™ve been inside for months.โ€

โ€œI hope thereโ€™s no more of ye,โ€ Joey muttered, climbing back into the driverโ€™s seat and pulling off. โ€œThe carโ€™s weighing down in the back.โ€

โ€œSorry,โ€ Johnny replied, clearly embarrassed.

โ€œItโ€™s his fault; the fat bastard,โ€ Gibsie declared and then turned his attention back to his buddy and asked, โ€œHey, is your dick okay, man? Iโ€™m really sorry about that. I hope I didnโ€™t squash your balls.โ€

โ€œGo fuck yourself, Gerard.โ€

โ€œI was being sincere, Jonathan. For that, you can get your own ice tonightโ€ฆhold up! You traitor! You went to the chipper!โ€

โ€œYeah, I did, and it was fucking delicious, and I have no regrets.โ€ โ€œWhat did you have?โ€

โ€œA few cheeseburgers and a curry-chips.โ€ โ€œHow did it taste?โ€

โ€œBetter than sex.โ€

Joey snorted and muttered, โ€œClearly, he doesnโ€™t have a clue about sex, if heโ€™s willing to trade pussy for a burger,โ€ under his breath.

โ€œBe nice,โ€ I scolded, slapping his shoulder.

โ€œI wouldnโ€™t trade you for all the steak in Ireland.โ€ I grinned. โ€œFlattery will get you everywhere.โ€ Winking, Joey turned his attention back to road.

โ€œWeโ€™re supposed to be on a diet,โ€ Gibsie accused, dragging my attention back to their banter. โ€œDid you get me something?โ€

โ€œYeah, I got you a burger.โ€ โ€œThanks, Johnny.โ€

โ€œAnd then I got hungry, so I ate it.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re aย monster!โ€

โ€œYou two are so weird,โ€ I laughed, shaking my head, as I turned back to my boyfriend. โ€œArenโ€™t they funny, Joe?โ€

โ€œTheyโ€™re something alright,โ€ he muttered, shaking his head, letting me know that he was entirely unimpressed with his future-bro-in-lawโ€™s antics.

โ€œHey.โ€ Gibsie sprang forward between the seats to gape at us. โ€œWho the fuck are you guys?โ€ he asked, though the expression on his face assured me that he knewย exactlyย who we were.

โ€˜Not a word about the weed,โ€™ย he mouthed, begging me with his eyes to keep schtum. โ€˜Heโ€™s the captain I tried to drug. Heโ€™ll kill me!โ€™

โ€œJohnnyโ€™s friends with my boyfriendโ€™s sister,โ€ I threw him a lifeline by offering.

โ€œSister?โ€ Now, Gibsie really did frown in confusion. โ€œWhat sister?โ€ โ€œShannon,โ€ Johnny chimed in.

Gibsieโ€™s eyes widened to saucers. โ€œShannon?โ€ He gaped at the back of Joeyโ€™s head and mouthed, โ€˜oh, Jesus, thatโ€™sย hisย sister? Capโ€™s obsessed with his sister!โ€™

Snickering, I nodded.

โ€œYes,ย Shannon,โ€ Johnny bit out.

โ€˜Oh shit,โ€™ย Gibsie mouthed before turning back to his buddy.

They fell into a blatantly obvious double-meaning conversation then, where the only people in the car that they were fooling were themselves.

โ€œOh, yeah,โ€ I leaned close and whispered in Joeyโ€™s ear. โ€œThat big gorilla of a boy definitely wants in your baby sister.โ€

โ€œJesus Christ, do you want me to crash the car?โ€ Joey choked out with a shudder. โ€œThat is a hideous thing to say to me, baby!โ€

โ€œItโ€™s true, though,โ€ I mused. โ€œMaybe theyโ€™ve already done the deed.โ€ โ€œMolloy.โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s so tiny, and heโ€™s so big โ€“โ€

โ€œAoife!โ€
