AOIFE
NEITHER ONE OFย Joeyโs parents had returned to the house by the following night.
Alone to bear the huge weight of responsibility they had unceremoniously dropped on his shoulders, I had tried to help as he, once again, parented his siblings with a proficiency a grown adult would envy.
Going from hauling them around to their extracurricular activities, to cooking and cleaning up after them, and then bath-time to bedtime; it was exhausting watching him go through the motions.
No wonder he would rather throw himself into traffic than have a child, I thought to myself,ย he already has four.
When Joey eventually did sit down, a little after eleven, looking bone- weary and close to breaking point, the very last thing I wanted to do was give him that push.
Slumped at the kitchen table, he let his head rest in his hands and exhaled a heavy sigh. โPretty shit date night, huh, Molloy?โ
โOh, I donโt know.โ Walking over to where he was sitting, I set two mugs of coffee down and wrapped my arms around him from behind. โI wouldnโt
say it was that terrible,โ I replied, pressing a kiss to the side of his neck. โI mean, the companyโs pretty epic.โ
Grunting in response, he reached a hand up and gave mine a squeeze.
โSo.โ Taking the seat next to his, I reached for my mug and blew the rim before taking a sip. โWhatโs the plan?โ
โI donโt have one,โ he admitted honestly, reaching for his mug. โI have no idea what Iโm doing, or how long Iโll have to do it for.โ
I thought about what he said for a long time before saying, โI think youโre quite possibly the most incredible human being Iโve ever known.โ
He shook his head and chuckled. โFuck off.โ
โIโve never meant anything more in my life,โ I urged. โWho you are? What you do? The knocks youโve taken? The blows you continue to receive? How hard you love those kids? How much you sacrifice so that they donโt have to?โ I shook my head. โItโs mind-blowing, Joe. Your selflessness is staggering.โ
โDonโt say shit like that, Molloy,โ he muttered, taking a swig of his coffee.
โWhy not?โ I pressed. โAre you afraid someone might hear me and realize how amazing you are, too?โ
โIโm far from amazing,โ he replied quietly, brows furrowed. โSeriously. Donโt put me on a pedestal. I wasnโt built for one. Iโll only end up letting you down.โ
โIโd say youโre doing a pretty good job of doing the opposite,โ I offered. โIโm so proud of you, Joe.โ
โDonโt be proud of me, Molloy,โ he bit out. โDonโt be. Because Iโm not better. Iโm not cured.โ He blew out an agitated breath. โIโm justโฆโ
โTrying?โ
โYeah.โ Shoulders slumping, he nodded slowly. โTrying.โ
โThatโs enough for me,โ I told him, voice thick with emotion. โYouโreย enough for me.โ
โI need to talk to you about something,โ he said then, expelling another frustrated breath. โSomething important that happened today at the GAA grounds.โ
โYeah,โ I agreed shakily. โI need to talk to you about something important, too.โ
โHey guys.โ
It was at that exact moment that Shannon walked into the kitchen, causing us both to turn away from the other in relief.
โHowโs the face, Shan?โ Joey asked, eyes trailing over the bruises. โJesus.โ
I looked at her, taking in the sight of her black eye and winced, feeling sick to my stomach.
โItโs okay Joe,โ she told him, offering him a weary smile. โIt looks worse than it feels.โ
โIโm so fucking sorry, Shan.โ He dropped his head in shame. โI should have been here.โ
โItโs not your fault,โ she told him before I could. โNone of what happened last night was your fault. Youโre entitled to have a life, Joey.โ
Yeah, he was, but that didnโt make it any easier for him.
โDid you manage to get Sean to go back to sleep?โ I asked, tone soft. โFinally,โ Shannon replied. โTadhg and Ollie are out for the count, but
Sean? God, heโs in an awful way over Mam. He was sobbing his heart out for
hours. He ended up crying himself to sleep.โ
โFucking cunts,โ Joey choked out, vibrating with tension again. โJoe,โ I whispered. โDonโt say that.โ
โSay what?โ he argued โThe truth? Because thatโs what they are; a pack of fucking cunts.โ
โSheโs still your mother,โ I said, not because I didnโt feel the same way as he did. I simply knew that his words, no matter how true or sincere, would haunt him later, because his mother held power over him in a way that I could never understand.
โSheโs worse than him,โ he snapped, running a hand through his hair. โLeaving those kids here on their own. She could pick up the phone and talk to the boys, but no, like always, she runs and buries her head in the sand.โ
Yes, sheย wasย worse than him, but Joey didnโt really feel that way. He was anxious and frightened, and feeling cornered.
He was reacting to his trauma by using his words as bullets.
Same as always.
But those bullets were made of buckshot that splintered and ricocheted through him, too.
โLetโs see what weโre dealing with,โ he said then, emptying his pockets on the kitchen table. “I donโt get paid again until next week. Which leaves us
with exactlyโฆโ His voice trailed off as he counted his cash and stacked a few rogue coins. โEighty-seven euro and thirty cents for the next six days.โ
โThatโs good, right?โ โIt should work.โ
โYou know Iโd help if I could,โ Shannon blurted out, looking guilty. โBut
he wonโt let me get a job.โ
โStop. Donโt even think about taking on blame for this, Shan,โ Joey warned, holding a hand up. And then, with a wince, he added, โCheck the fridge for me, will ya?โ When she obliged, showing us that it was completely bare, I watched as my boyfriend balled his hands into fists and growled. โFucking cunts.โ
โThe cupboards are the same,โ Shannon said quietly. โMam usually does the shopping on Saturday.”
“Usually,” Joey sneered, hands in his hair as he slumped over the table, staring down at the stacked coins.
โShe wouldnโt leave like this, Joe,โ Shannon offered quietly, worrying on her lip. โSheโd never leave us without the shopping.โ
โWell, she did,โ Joey shot back, tone hot and full of resentment. โFuck it; itโs grand. Weโll manage.โ
โYeah?โ
โYeah.โ
โOkay,โ his sister replied, looking upset and sounding unconvinced.
โIโll give Mark a buzz in the morning,โ Joey offered then. โHe has a conservatory job lined up in the city next week. Iโll ask if he needs a laborer.โ
โNo way,โ I argued. Mark was one of Dadโs clients that used the garage. Every time he came in for a service, he tried to poach Joey to work construction for him. It drove my father crazy. โYou canโt miss school. Itโs the leaving cert.โ
โNo,โ he replied, tone hard and unyielding. โI canโt let the kids go hungry. And God only knows when that bitch will come back.โ
โJoe, I can help withโโ
โI am not taking your money, Aoife,โ he all but spat, looking mortally offended at the very thought. โSo, please donโt offer.โ
โJoey.โ I shook my head, feeling at a loss. โIย wantย to help you.โ
โAnd I love you for that, but Iโm not taking handouts from my girlfriend.โ The look on his face assured me that the topic of conversation, for him,
was over and done with.
โDo you know where she is?โ I asked instead. โYour mam, I mean?โ
โI presume sheโs gone to find him,โ Shannon replied, looking so small and lost.
โOkay, donโt bite my head off for this,โ I said, choosing my words carefully, fully aware that I was poking a bear. โBut should you maybe think about calling in the authorities?โ
Joey glared at me. Shannon gaped in horror.
โThey canโt keep doing this to you,โ I tried to persuade, feeling sick to my stomach, and hating the look of betrayal in their eyes as they looked at me. โAnd youโre both here alone looking after three small children.โ I shook my head. โItโs not right or fair on any of you.โ
โNo, itโs not right or fair on us, but Shannon and I have been down that road before and thereโs no fucking way that weโre going back there,โ Joey blurted out, stunning me.
Back there?
Back where?
โJoey!โ Shannon hissed, horrified that he spoke so freely around me.
โLook at us, Shan,โ he replied wearily. โShe can already see how fucked up we are!โ
โWhat do you mean?โ I asked, giving my boyfriend my full attention. โBack where? What are you saying, Joe?โ
โWhen we were small, before the boys were born, when it was just Darren, Shannon, and myself, the three of us were put into care for six months,โ he blew my mind by revealing.
โOh my god.โ My heart seized in my chest. โYou never told me that.โ
โYeah, well, itโs not something I go around talking about. Besides, I was only six at the time,โ he muttered, dragging a hand through his hair. โShan was three. Mam placed us in voluntary care โ said she was tooย sickย to care for us at the time.โ His tone was dripping with disgust as he spoke. โDropped us off and walked the fuck away. Shannon and I got lucky. We were placed together with a nice family. Darren was eleven at the time and wasnโt so lucky.โ
โJoe, please donโt,โ I heard his sister say, pleading with him to block me out of their world.
โHe was sent to a care home where things happened to him,โ Joey continued, giving me his truth. โThings that arenโt supposed to happen to
children.โ
โAre you saying he wasโฆโ He nodded.
I felt my hand shoot up to cover my mouth; a knee-jerk reaction to hearing something so incomprehensible. โOhโโ
โDonโt,โ he warned, holding a shaky hand up. โIt didnโt happen to me.โ โI know,โ I choked out, reaching for his hand. โI justโฆitโs awful.โ
โAnyway, when Mamโs health improved, she went to court and managed to get us back,โ he explained, brushing my sympathy aside. โIt all came out in court about what had happened in that care home to my brother, and because sheโd voluntarily given us up, because of health problems, she was somehow re-awarded custody.โ
โOh my god.โ
Joey shrugged. โDarren was never the same again, and neither was our father.โ Brows furrowing, he scratched his chin before adding, โHe actually wasnโt too bad of a guy before that. But after it all came out about Darren; the old man lost his fucking mind. He couldnโt get over it and turned to the drink worse than ever. Got this ridiculous fucking notion into his head that what happened to Darren had somehow turned him.โ Joey shook his head. โHad he paid an ounce of attention to us growing up then he would have known better.โ
Reeling.
I was completely reeling. It all made sense now.
Jesus.
โI donโt know what to say,โ I confessed.
โItโs not right what happens in this house,โ he said, clearing his throat and drumming his fingers on the table. โBut itโs better than whatโs out there in some of those care homes. Thereโs no fucking way Iโm letting my sister and brothers go into care. No goddamn way. At least when theyโre here, theyโre all in one place, and I can keep them somewhat safe.โ
The irrational fear he had about the authorities finding out the truth wasnโt so irrational after all.
It was totally justified in his mind. In all of their minds.
Because the Lynch children had been let down by both the state and their
parents in all of the worst possible ways.
โDo you guys have someone you can call?โ I heard myself ask. โA relative or family member?โ
โNanny is eighty-one,โ Shannon explained. โSheโs too old and fragile to
โโ
it.โ
โMyself and Shannon have each other,โ Joey cut her off, tone flat. โThatโs โNot anymore,โ I replied, squeezing his hand. โYou have me.โ I looked at
his baby sister and smiled sadly. โAll of you.โ
They were both quiet for a long moment before Joey snatched my hand up. โChrist,โ he muttered, pressing a kiss to my knuckles. โI love you.โ
This was the first time that Joey had ever openly admitted his feelings in front of another person, and I felt the gravity of his admission in the deepest part of my heart.
โOkay.โ Standing up before I collapsed in a heap and cried in sadness for them, I clapped my hands together and smiled brightly. โI amย starving, and I know you both must be, too. So, Iโm going to make a food run to the chipper and it will be my treat.โ
โAoife,โ Joey began to say. โI told youโโ
โMyย treat,โ I warned, cutting him off, and casting him a warning glare. He could fight with me about everything else, but not this. โNow, are you coming with me?โ
โYeah, Iโll come,โ he muttered, rising to his feet. โYouโre not driving around town in the middle of the night by yourself.โ
โWELL, at least youโre finally eating again,โ Joey noted, half an hour later, as we sat in one of the empty booths at the local chipper, scarfing down a monster-sized bag of chips. โYou had me worried for a while there.โ
โBelieve me, Joe, taking into account the amount of crap going on in your life right now, my appetite is the least of your worries,โ I assured him, dabbing a chip in mayonnaise before popping it into my mouth.
โKevโs right,โ he mused, eyeing me curiously. โThis new-found love of mayonnaise is weird as fuck, baby.โ
Cheeks flushing, I averted my eyes from his, both unwilling and unable to delve deeper into the origins of my new-found cravings.
That was a conversation for another day.
A day when your boyfriendโs life isnโt unraveling around him.
โShould we head back?โ I asked, changing the subject. โTo the kids?โ He shrugged. โProbably.โ
โWhat?โ I asked, eyeing him warily when he continued to stare at me, making no move to leave. โHave I got something on my face?โ
He shook his head slowly. โIโm just thinking.โ
Oh shit.
โAbout what?โ
โHow different you look.โ
Oh, double shit.
โDifferent how?โ
โIโm not sure,โ he mused, tilting his head to one side, studying me with razor-sharp eyes. โBut you do.โ
โIs that a bad thing?โ I chuckled nervously.
โNothing about the way you look is ever bad, Molloy,โ he replied, tone thoughtful. โYou just look sort of shiny.โ
I swallowed deeply. โShiny?โ
โYeah.โ He nodded. โKind of like youโre glowing.โ
That would be your baby.
โThat would be my halo,โ I joked, as I quickly stood up and grabbed all of our empty food wrappings. Walking over to the bin, I tossed our rubbish inside and quickly wiped my hands together. โItโs shinier than yours, remember?โ
โItโs a good look,โ he assured me, pulling me close to give my ass a squeeze, before leading us out the door. โVery sexy.โ
โJoe.โ I couldnโt repress the illicit shiver that rolled through me if I tried. โDonโt.โ
โDonโt what?โ he purred, pushing me up against the wall outside. โDonโt tell my girlfriend that I think sheโs sexy as fuck?โ Pinning me with his hips, he cupped my face in his hands and kissed me hard. โYou drive me crazy,โ he growled against my lips. โYou twist me up in knots, queen.โ
โRight back at you, stud,โ I breathed, relinquishing all power over to him, as I wrapped my arms around his neck and pulled him closer.
โHow do you feel about getting naked tonight?โ he said against my lips. โJoe, Iโmโฆโ I exhaled a ragged breath. โIโmโโ
โWhatever it is, I donโt care,โ he cut me off by saying. โI need in you so
fucking bad, Molloy.โ
โI donโt know who you bleeding are!โ A nearby voice boomed, and we both turned our heads in unison to see an absolute giant of a boy slumped against the glass front of the chipper, talkingย atย his phone, while he inhaled an abnormal number of burgers. โI donโt know any bleeding King Clit!โ
โWell shit,โ Joey mused, stepping back. โThatโs him.โ โWho?โ
โThatโs the lad Shannon has her eye on.โ
โThe one you said beat up Ciara Maloneyโs boyfriend?โ โThatโs the one.โ
โWell, go Shannon,โ I said, taking in the sight of the ridiculously attractive boy, who was making a ridiculouslyย unattractiveย attempt at swallowing a quarter pounder in two bites. โHeโs a little ridey, isnโt he?โ
Joey snorted in disgust.
โDonโt worry,โ I teased, patting his chest. โThe steroid-head look doesnโt appeal to me.โ
โNo?โ
โNope.โ Grinning up at him, I added, โIโm more into the lean, mean, cocaine snorting machine type.โ
He smirked. โFunny.โ โLetโs go say hi.โ
โWhat?โ Joey gaped at me like Iโd grown three heads. โWhy would we sayย hi?โ
โBecause he could be your future brother-in-law.โ His brows furrowed. โLike fuck.โ
โCome on,โ I laughed, catching ahold of his hand. โLive a little โ but be nice about it. Donโt even think about scaring him off your sister.โ
โShe could do better.โ
โShe could do a lot worse,โ I laughed. โGo on, Joe. Go and say hi to him.โ
He gaped at me. โWhy me?โ
I shrugged. โBecause sheโs your sister, not mine.โ โSo?โ
โSo, shut up and do it already!โ
โWhy am I constantly being ruled by the women in my life?โ Joey muttered, trailing after me. โJohnny Kavanagh?โ
โNo pictures tonight, kids,โ the boy replied, shoulders slumped. โJohnnyโs on a time-out.โ
Joey gave me a look that saidย what a dickhead.
I gave him an encouraging nod.
โI spoke to you on the phone the other week,โ Joey offered then, giving me a pointed look. โYou know my sister, Shannon. You dropped her home.โ
The boyโs attention quickly sparked to life at the sound of Shannonโs name, and I watched the fog dissipate from his steel blue eyes.
โYouโre the hurler.โ Johnny straightened his brick shit-house shoulders. โJoey.โ Smiling proudly to himself, he added, โShannon like the river, and Joey the hurler.โ
Joey gave me aย what the fuckย look.
I choked out a laugh in response. โLike the river?โ I grinned. โGod, how much have you had to drink?โ
โA river load by the looks of it,โ Joey said dryly, nudging my shoulder with his. โDo you think you should head home? You look fairly well oiled, lad.โ
โWould if I could,โ Johnny grumbled, looking a little lost. โNo taxi.โ
I opened my mouth to speak when Joey shook his head, giving me a warning look that saidย donโt do it.
โSure we could give you a lift home, couldnโt we,ย babe?โ I said, doing it anyway, and reveling in theย fuck youย expression on his face. โWeโre only parked down the road.โ
โThat would be great,โ Johnny replied, voice slurred, but eyes full of relief. โThanks.โ
โYeah, sure,โ Joey said flatly. โNoย problem.โ
I snickered.
Joey glared at me.
I beamed back at him.
This would be fun.
โIโm Aoife Molloy, by the way,โ I said, amused at how this giant of a boy tried and failed to walk a straight line down the footpath towards the car. Rounding the car, I yanked the door open and snickered, โJoey theย hurlerโsย girlfriend,โ before climbing inside.
โNice to meet you,โ Johnny replied, manners impeccable, even though he was having a hard time keeping himself upright.
โThree-door,โ Joey explained, gesturing for our passenger to maneuver over his seat to get into the back. โYouโre going to have to climb into the back.โ
โItโs fine, lad,โ Johnny replied ever so politely.
And then I watched as, quite possibly, the biggest boy Iโd ever seen in my life tried and failed to wedge himself into the backseat of my poor Opel Corsa.
Rolling his eyes, Joey shoved him into the back seat with an impatient, โfor fuckโs sake,โ growl.
โChrist,โ Johnny muttered when he was inside, taking up the entire back row of my car with his shoulders alone.
Climbing into the driverโs seat, Joey shoved his seat back as far as it would go, causing the big lad in the back to wheeze out a breath. โYou good?โ
โAll good,โ Johnny strangled out, clearly crushed. โThanks again for the lift.โ
โNo problem.โ Joey leaned in close and mouthed the wordsย youโre dead
before brushing a quick peck to my lips. โWhere are we heading?โ
โAbout four miles the other side of Tommen College,โ Johnny slurred. โHead out the main road for the city. Iโll call the turn offs when we get to them.โ
Joey had just pulled onto the road when he had to slam on the brakes when a big, blond bastard all but threw himself on the bonnet of my car.
โWhat the fuck?โ we both roared in unison, gaping at the lunatic hugging my car like he was superman.
โGet off the car, asshole!โ Joey roared, rolling down his window.
โYouโre stealing my center! Give him back,โ the boy called out, coming around to the side of the car to poke his head through the driverโs window. โHey, Cap, howโs it going?โ he said then, smiling into the backseat at Johnny. โIโve been looking everywhere for you.โ
Joey and I looked at each other, instantly recognizing the mad bastard as none other than Gibsie Gibberson or whatever his name was from the Tommen party.
โAnd this clown is?โ my boyfriend asked, knowing full well who he was.
The look he gave me told me toย go with it.
โHeโs my flanker,โ Johnny replied with a groan, as he leaned between the seats and hissed, โGibs, what the fuck are you doing, lad? Youโre supposed to be gone home with Hughie.โ
Joey and I looked at each other again, and I knew he was thinking the same thing I was when we mouthed the wordย champagneย in unison.
Aw, crap.
โThe Gards pulled him over for tax and insurance,โ Gibsie declared, clearly intoxicated, as he staggered and swayed on his feet.
โSo?โ Johnny hissed. โHughieโs above board.โ
โHe looked at me, Johnny! He shone his big fucking torch right in my eyes,โ Gibsie slurred, wide-eyed. โI panicked and jumped out of the car. Iโve been running around town ever since. I tried to call you but you kept cutting me off.
โYouโreย King Clit?โ
โOh yeah. I forgot about that.โ โWhatโs Hughie down as?โ โGinger pubes.โ
โHeโs blond.โ
โHis girlfriend isnโt.โ โJesus Christ, Gibs.โ
โWhat do you want me to do with him?โ Joey asked, sounding bored, while I was thoroughly amused by their antics.
โI should probably bring him back to my place,โ Johnny muttered, rubbing his jaw. โOr to a secured hospital.โ
โSee what bullshit you got us into?โ Joey told me under his breath, before throwing the door open and climbing out to move his seat forward.
With none of the grace or consideration his friend had shown for the shocks of my car, Gibsie threw himself into the backseat, sprawling out on top of his friendโs lap.
โFuck!โ
โShit, man, did I get your dick? Iโll get ice for your balls when we get home.โ
โGet. Off. Me.โ
โChrist, this is the tightest hole Iโve been inside for months.โ
โI hope thereโs no more of ye,โ Joey muttered, climbing back into the driverโs seat and pulling off. โThe carโs weighing down in the back.โ
โSorry,โ Johnny replied, clearly embarrassed.
โItโs his fault; the fat bastard,โ Gibsie declared and then turned his attention back to his buddy and asked, โHey, is your dick okay, man? Iโm really sorry about that. I hope I didnโt squash your balls.โ
โGo fuck yourself, Gerard.โ
โI was being sincere, Jonathan. For that, you can get your own ice tonightโฆhold up! You traitor! You went to the chipper!โ
โYeah, I did, and it was fucking delicious, and I have no regrets.โ โWhat did you have?โ
โA few cheeseburgers and a curry-chips.โ โHow did it taste?โ
โBetter than sex.โ
Joey snorted and muttered, โClearly, he doesnโt have a clue about sex, if heโs willing to trade pussy for a burger,โ under his breath.
โBe nice,โ I scolded, slapping his shoulder.
โI wouldnโt trade you for all the steak in Ireland.โ I grinned. โFlattery will get you everywhere.โ Winking, Joey turned his attention back to road.
โWeโre supposed to be on a diet,โ Gibsie accused, dragging my attention back to their banter. โDid you get me something?โ
โYeah, I got you a burger.โ โThanks, Johnny.โ
โAnd then I got hungry, so I ate it.โ
โYouโre aย monster!โ
โYou two are so weird,โ I laughed, shaking my head, as I turned back to my boyfriend. โArenโt they funny, Joe?โ
โTheyโre something alright,โ he muttered, shaking his head, letting me know that he was entirely unimpressed with his future-bro-in-lawโs antics.
โHey.โ Gibsie sprang forward between the seats to gape at us. โWho the fuck are you guys?โ he asked, though the expression on his face assured me that he knewย exactlyย who we were.
โNot a word about the weed,โย he mouthed, begging me with his eyes to keep schtum. โHeโs the captain I tried to drug. Heโll kill me!โ
โJohnnyโs friends with my boyfriendโs sister,โ I threw him a lifeline by offering.
โSister?โ Now, Gibsie really did frown in confusion. โWhat sister?โ โShannon,โ Johnny chimed in.
Gibsieโs eyes widened to saucers. โShannon?โ He gaped at the back of Joeyโs head and mouthed, โoh, Jesus, thatโsย hisย sister? Capโs obsessed with his sister!โ
Snickering, I nodded.
โYes,ย Shannon,โ Johnny bit out.
โOh shit,โย Gibsie mouthed before turning back to his buddy.
They fell into a blatantly obvious double-meaning conversation then, where the only people in the car that they were fooling were themselves.
โOh, yeah,โ I leaned close and whispered in Joeyโs ear. โThat big gorilla of a boy definitely wants in your baby sister.โ
โJesus Christ, do you want me to crash the car?โ Joey choked out with a shudder. โThat is a hideous thing to say to me, baby!โ
โItโs true, though,โ I mused. โMaybe theyโve already done the deed.โ โMolloy.โ
โSheโs so tiny, and heโs so big โโ
โAoife!โ
