MY PITIFUL ATTEMPTย at telling Joey about our little situation had resulted in him indirectly admitting that he would rather play with traffic on the M8 motorway than father a child with me.

Joking or not, it wasnโ€™t a risk that I was willing to take, especially when Friday night traffic was so heavy.

By the time we made it back to his house, I was fresh out of tears and he was fresh out of patience.

โ€œI donโ€™t know, Molloy,โ€ he said, parking the car, after I finished giving him a detailed rundown of the woes of womanhood and premenstrual syndrome, literally anything to buy myself more time from having to tell him the truth. โ€œItโ€™s not my area of expertise, but surely they can give you a prescription for that.โ€

โ€œYou think I need a prescription for mood swings?โ€

โ€œNo, not a prescription, per say,โ€ he hedged, climbing out of the car. โ€œMore like a light tranquilizer.โ€

โ€œWell, youโ€™d know all about those,โ€ I huffed, stepping out and slamming my door shut. โ€œWouldnโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œForget about it being light; a horse tranquilizer should do it,โ€ he muttered, slinging an arm over my shoulder. โ€œCome on, cranky.โ€

Sighing, I slid my hand into his back pocket, leaned into his side, and said, โ€œIโ€™m sorry for being such a bitch to you.โ€

โ€œMeh. Iโ€™m an addict, youโ€™re a bitch,โ€ he mused, pulling me close. โ€œNo relationship is perfect.โ€

I laughed. โ€œIt works, though, right?โ€

โ€œRight.โ€ Grinning, he leaned down and kissed me, as we rounded the garden wall and walked up the driveway. โ€œTwo of a very fucked up kind.โ€

โ€œHey, guys.โ€ Shannon greeted us in the doorway, with a sobbing Sean on her hip, and I felt my boyfriend stiffen when his eyes landed on her face.

Her very black and blue face.

โ€œWhat happened?โ€ Joey demanded, moving straight for his siblings. Scooping Sean into his arms, he quickly led his sister into the house, while I hurried after them.

โ€œHe lost it,โ€ Shannon explained, cracking her knuckles anxiously. โ€œOver that picture in the paper of me and Johnny Kavanagh. He wouldnโ€™t stop, Joe. No matter how much I begged him.โ€ With her small hands trembling, she walked over to the cooker, and retrieved a small foil-covered plate. โ€œMam came in and pulled him off me,โ€ she whispered, sniffling, as she removed the foil and put the plate in the microwave to heat up. โ€œBut then he hit her, too.โ€

โ€œHe hit Mam?โ€ Joeyโ€™s voice was deathly cold. โ€œSheโ€™s five months pregnant.โ€

โ€œI know,โ€ Shannon sobbed, rubbing her swollen cheek. โ€œWhen he left, he took everything with him. He filled up the car with everything he could get

his hands on โ€“ he even took the television in the sitting room.โ€

โ€œI paid for that,โ€ Joey bit out, body thrumming with tension, but trying to steady himself, as the small toddler in his arms clung tightly to his neck. Rubbing Seanโ€™s back in small, circular motions, he looked at his sister and asked, โ€œWhereโ€™s Mam now?โ€

โ€œThe boys are in bed,โ€ she hurried to tell him. โ€œThey eventually passed out, but I canโ€™t get this little guy to stop crying long enough to go to sleep.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll sort him,โ€ Joey replied before repeating, โ€œWhereโ€™s Mam?โ€ Shannon flinched. โ€œJoeโ€ฆโ€

โ€œWhereโ€™sย Mam, Shannon?โ€

โ€œGone,โ€ she squeezed out. โ€œShe left us.โ€

โ€œLeft you?โ€ He shook his head. โ€œLeft you how?โ€

โ€œShe packed a bag and climbed into a taxi,โ€ his sister confessed, jumping when the microwave pinged behind her. โ€œAbout an hour after Dad left.โ€ Shivering she opened the microwave door and withdrew the heated plate of spaghetti. โ€œThat was around half past six, and she hasnโ€™t called or answered her phone since.โ€

โ€œSo, what?โ€ Joey demanded. โ€œMam just left you here alone with the boys? No explanation or anything? She just upped and left?โ€

She offered her brother a sad smile and set the plate clearly meant for him down on the table. โ€œHere; I saved you some dinner.โ€

โ€œShannon.โ€

โ€œYou should eat it before it gets cold.โ€ โ€œIโ€™m not hungry. Answer me.โ€

โ€œAre you sure?โ€œ โ€œShannon!โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ she admitted quietly. โ€œI suppose she did.โ€

โ€œWhy didnโ€™t you call me?โ€

โ€œBecause you were going to the cinema.โ€ โ€œShannon!โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t want to trouble you again.โ€ She cringed, cheeks burning. โ€œI feel

like thatโ€™s all any of us do these days.โ€

โ€œBecause Iโ€™m yourย brother,โ€ he snapped, closing the space between them and tucking her under his arm. โ€œThatโ€™s what Iโ€™mย supposedย to do.โ€

I watched as both Shannon and Sean clung to Joey, a lot like I had earlier in the car.

โ€œYou call and I come running,โ€ he told them in a gruff tone, but his eyes were locked on mine as he spoke. โ€œEvery time.โ€
