AOIFE
MY PITIFUL ATTEMPTย at telling Joey about our little situation had resulted in him indirectly admitting that he would rather play with traffic on the M8 motorway than father a child with me.
Joking or not, it wasnโt a risk that I was willing to take, especially when Friday night traffic was so heavy.
By the time we made it back to his house, I was fresh out of tears and he was fresh out of patience.
โI donโt know, Molloy,โ he said, parking the car, after I finished giving him a detailed rundown of the woes of womanhood and premenstrual syndrome, literally anything to buy myself more time from having to tell him the truth. โItโs not my area of expertise, but surely they can give you a prescription for that.โ
โYou think I need a prescription for mood swings?โ
โNo, not a prescription, per say,โ he hedged, climbing out of the car. โMore like a light tranquilizer.โ
โWell, youโd know all about those,โ I huffed, stepping out and slamming my door shut. โWouldnโt you?โ
โForget about it being light; a horse tranquilizer should do it,โ he muttered, slinging an arm over my shoulder. โCome on, cranky.โ
Sighing, I slid my hand into his back pocket, leaned into his side, and said, โIโm sorry for being such a bitch to you.โ
โMeh. Iโm an addict, youโre a bitch,โ he mused, pulling me close. โNo relationship is perfect.โ
I laughed. โIt works, though, right?โ
โRight.โ Grinning, he leaned down and kissed me, as we rounded the garden wall and walked up the driveway. โTwo of a very fucked up kind.โ
โHey, guys.โ Shannon greeted us in the doorway, with a sobbing Sean on her hip, and I felt my boyfriend stiffen when his eyes landed on her face.
Her very black and blue face.
โWhat happened?โ Joey demanded, moving straight for his siblings. Scooping Sean into his arms, he quickly led his sister into the house, while I hurried after them.
โHe lost it,โ Shannon explained, cracking her knuckles anxiously. โOver that picture in the paper of me and Johnny Kavanagh. He wouldnโt stop, Joe. No matter how much I begged him.โ With her small hands trembling, she walked over to the cooker, and retrieved a small foil-covered plate. โMam came in and pulled him off me,โ she whispered, sniffling, as she removed the foil and put the plate in the microwave to heat up. โBut then he hit her, too.โ
โHe hit Mam?โ Joeyโs voice was deathly cold. โSheโs five months pregnant.โ
โI know,โ Shannon sobbed, rubbing her swollen cheek. โWhen he left, he took everything with him. He filled up the car with everything he could get
his hands on โ he even took the television in the sitting room.โ
โI paid for that,โ Joey bit out, body thrumming with tension, but trying to steady himself, as the small toddler in his arms clung tightly to his neck. Rubbing Seanโs back in small, circular motions, he looked at his sister and asked, โWhereโs Mam now?โ
โThe boys are in bed,โ she hurried to tell him. โThey eventually passed out, but I canโt get this little guy to stop crying long enough to go to sleep.โ
โIโll sort him,โ Joey replied before repeating, โWhereโs Mam?โ Shannon flinched. โJoeโฆโ
โWhereโsย Mam, Shannon?โ
โGone,โ she squeezed out. โShe left us.โ
โLeft you?โ He shook his head. โLeft you how?โ
โShe packed a bag and climbed into a taxi,โ his sister confessed, jumping when the microwave pinged behind her. โAbout an hour after Dad left.โ Shivering she opened the microwave door and withdrew the heated plate of spaghetti. โThat was around half past six, and she hasnโt called or answered her phone since.โ
โSo, what?โ Joey demanded. โMam just left you here alone with the boys? No explanation or anything? She just upped and left?โ
She offered her brother a sad smile and set the plate clearly meant for him down on the table. โHere; I saved you some dinner.โ
โShannon.โ
โYou should eat it before it gets cold.โ โIโm not hungry. Answer me.โ
โAre you sure?โ โShannon!โ
โYes,โ she admitted quietly. โI suppose she did.โ
โWhy didnโt you call me?โ
โBecause you were going to the cinema.โ โShannon!โ
โI didnโt want to trouble you again.โ She cringed, cheeks burning. โI feel
like thatโs all any of us do these days.โ
โBecause Iโm yourย brother,โ he snapped, closing the space between them and tucking her under his arm. โThatโs what Iโmย supposedย to do.โ
I watched as both Shannon and Sean clung to Joey, a lot like I had earlier in the car.
โYou call and I come running,โ he told them in a gruff tone, but his eyes were locked on mine as he spoke. โEvery time.โ
