AOIFE
โITโS BEEN OVER A WEEK,โย Casey exclaimed, sliding onto the stool next to mine at our workstation in Biology on Friday. We were early for class, and, with the exception of a few stragglers at the other end of the lab, we were thankfully alone. โYouย haveย to tell him, Aoif.โ
Keeping my eyes trained on my pencil case, I didnโt even try to stop my hands from shaking. They hadnโt stopped since my world fell around me. โI know.โ
โAnd you have to go to the doctor.โ โI know.โ
โI can make the appointment and go with you.โ I shook my head. โNo.โ
She sighed heavily. โAoife.โ
โIโm not ready, okay?โ The tremor in my hand increased to the point where I couldnโt open the zip of my pencil case. โIโm just not.โ
โYou still have options, you know,โ she said softly, reaching over to open my pencil case for me. โFuck this country. Thereโs always England. We can get on a boat to Liverpool in the morning, if thatโs what you want. If you want it to be over, then it can be.โ
โI know,โ I whispered, biting down on my lip. โSo, youย haveย thought about it?โ
โOfย courseย Iโve thought about it.โ Blinking back my tears, I nodded
slowly. โItโs the best thing for both of us. Iโm not stupid, Case, I know itโs whatโs best in the long-term, but itโs too late for that.โ
โItโs not too late,โ she was quick to point out. โIf we leave tomorrowโโ โNo, no, it is for me, okay.โ Exhaling a ragged breath, I dropped my head
in my hand and buried a sob. โIโve thought about it and I canโt do it, Case. I
justย canโt, okay?โ
โOkay,โ she conceded, tone soothing โOkay, Aoif.โ
Slowly exhaling, I concentrated on keeping my breathing even, deep and slow, and not giving into the panic clawing at my throat.
โSo, youโre going to go through with this?โ she said softly. โYouโre really going to have Joey Lynchโs baby?โ
Words failed me and I clenched my eyes shut, barely managing to nod my head.
โAnd keep it?โ she asked cautiously. โYouโre going to keep it?โ
โYeah,โ I squeezed out, hand moving to rest on my stomach, only to think better of it and grip the desk instead. โI guess I am.โ
โThen you have me,โ she said, sliding her arm through mine, as the lab started to fill up with other students. โAnd Iโve got your back. Always.โ
โWeโre supposed to be going to the cinema tonight,โ I told her in a shaky tone, eyes trained on the front of the room. โHe texted me about it earlier.โ
โThen maybe you guys can have a conversation afterwards,โ she offered in a hopeful tone.
โHe wonโt be able to handle it, Case,โ I whispered, teeth chattering from nerves. โHeโll go off the rails again.โ
โYou donโt know that.โ
โI do.โ Knees bopping anxiously, I blinked away another batch of tears. โIt will wreck him. Heโs been doing so well. Better than I could have imagined. And this? This willย ruinย him.โ
โEither way, he has to be told,โ she replied gently. โYou know that, Aoif.โ
โYeah, I do.โ I nodded weakly. โBut my world is already collapsing around me. Can you blame me for wanting to delay that for him?โ
โWell, donโt delay it too long,โ she mumbled. โBecause youโre starting to show.โ
Those words were all it took for everything inside of my stomach to come rushing back up.
Bolting off my stool, I ran out of class, not stopping until I was on my knees in the girls bathroom, with my head in the bowl and my life in pieces around me.
