AOIFE
โWE NEED TO TALK,โย Casey announced on Monday morning, as she stood in the middle of the empty girls changing room at school and glared at me.
We had a double class of P.E and I was sitting on the wooden bench, last as usual, attempting to tie the laces of my football boots and catch up with the rest of my class.
Meanwhile, Casey was fully kitted out in her training gear which consisted of a jersey, white GAA shorts, socks and boots.
She had her hurley in one hand and her pink helmet โsomething I hadnโt realized they sold in that color โ in the other.
โIโve tried to keep my nose out,โ she added, planting her hands on her hips. โReally, I have. I figured that youโd tell me when you were ready, but itโs starting to get obvious now.โ
โIโm a little lost here, Case,โ I admitted, adjusting my football socks before reaching for my hurling helmet โ a staple item in every school-going Irish personโs cupboard across the country.
โListen.โ Sliding onto the bench alongside me, she set her hurley and helmet down before reaching for my hand and giving it a reassuring squeeze.
โYou know that I love you, right?โ She gave me one of those supportive smiles. โAnd thereโs nothing on this planet that you canโt tell me.โ
โObviously.โ
โGood.โ Another hand squeeze incurred. โSo, if there was anything that you wanted to get off your chest, you would tell me, right?โ
โWhatโs this about, Case?โ I asked, brows furrowed in confusion. โYou tell me.โ
I stared blankly back at her. โI have no idea.โ
โCome on, Aoife,โ she urged, eyeballing me with what I presumed was meant to be a meaningful stare, but only made her look psychotic. โItโsย okay. Iโm your best friend. I wonโt turn my back on you in your hour of need.โ
โTurn your back on me forย what?โ I laughed, at a loss, but finding her amusing just the same.
โDoes your mother know?โ she demanded then, huffing out a breath. โI presume Joe knows. Thatโs a given โ oh my god, does Katie know? Because I can understand your mam and Joey knowing, but I swear if you told Katie Wilmot before me then Iโm going to be seriously pissed. I donโt care if sheโs your next-door neighbor, Iโm the one whoโs had your back from the dawn of time, bitch.โ
โCase, youโre going to need to tellย meย what the hell youโre talking about, because Iโm genuinely lost here, babe.โ
Casey stared at me for the longest moment before her blue eyes widened and her brows shot up. โOfย courseย they donโt know,โ she mumbled, pressing a hand to her brow like she had a sudden migraine. โBecauseย youย donโt know.โ
โDonโt know what?โ
โAoif.โ My best friend shrugged helplessly, before saying, โI think you might be in the family way.โ
I took in the sight of her comical expression and burst out laughing. โAoif, Iโm being totally serious here.โ
โI know you are,โ I agreed, still laughing. โThatโs what makes it so funny.โ
โAoife.โ
โOh my god, no. Iโm not pregnant, Case,โ I choked out, trying to sober my features. โWhy would you even think that?โ
โWhen was your last period?โ I gaped at her. โWhat?โ
โYour last period,โ she urged, tone serious. โWhen was that exactly?โ
โIโm due on,โ I told her.
โNo.โ She shook her head. โNo, youโre not.โ
โI think Iโd know when my period is due,โ I replied, tone defensive now, as the funny side of this conversation quickly faded.
โYou would think,โ she muttered, pressing her fingers to her temples. โListen to me. Since first year, weโve always been in sync. The third week of the month. Like clockwork.โ
โSo?โ
โSo, youโre either two weeks late on last monthโs one, or two weeks early for this monthโs one.โ
โIโmโฆno, that canโt be right.โ Shaking my head, I reached into my bag and grabbed my phone. โIโm due on.โ Tapping furiously on the buttons of my shiny new Nokia 3510i, my secret Santa Christmas present from Nana Healy, I searched through the calendar notes, panic rising in my chest at a rapid speed. โIโm not late โ oh, thank Jesus!โ Exhaling a ragged breath when I found what I was looking for, I handed the phone to her and physically sagged in relief. โSee?โ
โWhat am I looking at here?โ
โI knew I wasnโt late,โ I told her, pointing at the saved note. โI had a switch up a couple of months back, where it came early, but Iโm fine, see? My last one started on the fourteenth.โ
โYeah, that was December, Aoif.โ
โWhat?โ I shook my head. โNo, no, that was January.โ
โNo, babe,โ she corrected, tapping her long nail against the screen of my phone. โIt was December.โ
โThat canโt be right.โ
โTell me that you had a period last month?โ she begged, voice holding a note of anxiety similar to the feeling rising up inside of me. โAoife, please. Tell me โโ
โI did,โ I strangled out, snatching my phone back up, and furiously checking through every calendar note and outbox message I could find only to come up empty. โOfย courseย I did. I had one at the end of Januaryโฆ exceptโฆโ
โExcept what?โ
โWell, it was weird,โ I strangled out, feeling my anxiety rise. โIt was super light and only lasted a day or two. It was like some light spotting that just tapered off.โ
โDear Jesus,โ Casey cried, slapping the heel of her hand against her forehead. โThat could have been implantation bleeding.โ
โWhat the hell is implantation bleeding?โ I demanded, eyes wide and full of terror. โImplantation of what?โ
โOf Joeyโs strongest fucking swimmer!โ Casey strangled out. โSeriously, I know what Iโm talking about. Itโs like this teeny-tiny period like spotting that can trick you into thinking youโre having a period. It happened to my cousin Lisa. You know Lisa, with the twins?โ
โYes, Jesus, I know Lisa,โ I wailed. โBut thatโs not happening to me.โ
โYou had a lot going on back at Christmas.โ My best friend gave me a worrying look. โYou know, with Joey going off the rails and stuff. Maybe you missed a pill or something?โ
โIโm not pregnant, Casey!โ I practically hissed, feeling the blood rush to my head at record speed. Heat encompassed my body, flooding my cheeks, and making me want to run at top speed as far away from this conversation as I could get. โIโm not, okay? I canโt be. And Iย neverย miss my pill.ย Never.โ
โI know you donโt,โ she was quick to soothe, reaching out to place a hand on mine. โI believe you.โ She exhaled heavily before continuing, โItโs just that you and Joey were going through all of that crap in the new year, and your head was a little screwed up. Maybe, it slipped your mind.”
โNo,โ I snapped, rejecting any other thoughts. โNothing slipped my mind.
Iโm careful, Case.โ
โWere you on antibiotics?โ she offered then. โBecause certain types can mess with the pill and make it ineffective? Because thatโs how my own mam ended up with me.โ
โNo,โ I strangled out, feeling weak. โNothing like that.โ โWere you sick? Have you had any bugs?โ
โCasey!โ
โBecause your period has deserted you, youโve been eating like a horse for the past two months, and your boobs have definitely gotten biggerโฆโ Words trailing off, she reached for the hem of my jersey. โAnd I mean, no offense, babe, but you do look like youโve packed a couple of pounds on your lower belly.โ
โStop it!โ I cried out, holding a hand up. โJust stop, okay?โ โIโm trying to be supportive here, Aoif,โ she defended.
โWell donโt,โ I cried out. โI did the right thing, Casey. I followed the rules. I waited for the right guy. I took my time. I took the damnย pill. This is not supposed to happen to me. Seriously, this is all a big mistake.โ
โMaybe?โ she offered with a grimace. โOr maybe, you need to consider making an appointment with your doctor, because whether you want to believe it or not, Aoif, itโs looking a lot likeโโ
โShh. Donโt say it. Just start praying.โ โTo who?โ
โSt. Anthony,โ I strangled out, dropping to my knees, and clasping my hands together. โHeโs the saint weโre supposed to pray to when things go missing, isnโt he?โ
โI donโt think St. Anthony can help find your missing period, Aoif.โ
โYou never know.โ
โMr. Ryan sent me to tell you both that you need to get your asses out on the pitch,โ Danielle interrupted, stalking into the changing room. โOr heโll save you both a seat in detention at lunchtime.โ
โWeโre coming,โ Casey mumbled, making no move to get up, eyes still glued to mine.
โHe said now.โ
โWeโre coming,โ I snapped, springing up and hurrying for the door, needing to get as far away from this conversation as I could.
โAoife,โ Casey called after me. โWait.โ I didnโt wait.
I didnโt answer her, either.
I couldnโt.
Not when my fear was paralyzing me.
