Chapter no 26 -โ€Œ โ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€ŒI โ€™ M ALWAYS CAREFUL

Redeeming 6 (Boys of Tommen, #4)

AOIFE

โ€œWE NEED TO TALK,โ€ย Casey announced on Monday morning, as she stood in the middle of the empty girls changing room at school and glared at me.

We had a double class of P.E and I was sitting on the wooden bench, last as usual, attempting to tie the laces of my football boots and catch up with the rest of my class.

Meanwhile, Casey was fully kitted out in her training gear which consisted of a jersey, white GAA shorts, socks and boots.

She had her hurley in one hand and her pink helmet โ€“something I hadnโ€™t realized they sold in that color โ€“ in the other.

โ€œIโ€™ve tried to keep my nose out,โ€ she added, planting her hands on her hips. โ€œReally, I have. I figured that youโ€™d tell me when you were ready, but itโ€™s starting to get obvious now.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m a little lost here, Case,โ€ I admitted, adjusting my football socks before reaching for my hurling helmet โ€“ a staple item in every school-going Irish personโ€™s cupboard across the country.

โ€œListen.โ€ Sliding onto the bench alongside me, she set her hurley and helmet down before reaching for my hand and giving it a reassuring squeeze.

โ€œYou know that I love you, right?โ€ She gave me one of those supportive smiles. โ€œAnd thereโ€™s nothing on this planet that you canโ€™t tell me.โ€

โ€œObviously.โ€

โ€œGood.โ€ Another hand squeeze incurred. โ€œSo, if there was anything that you wanted to get off your chest, you would tell me, right?โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s this about, Case?โ€ I asked, brows furrowed in confusion. โ€œYou tell me.โ€

I stared blankly back at her. โ€œI have no idea.โ€

โ€œCome on, Aoife,โ€ she urged, eyeballing me with what I presumed was meant to be a meaningful stare, but only made her look psychotic. โ€œItโ€™sย okay. Iโ€™m your best friend. I wonโ€™t turn my back on you in your hour of need.โ€

โ€œTurn your back on me forย what?โ€ I laughed, at a loss, but finding her amusing just the same.

โ€œDoes your mother know?โ€ she demanded then, huffing out a breath. โ€œI presume Joe knows. Thatโ€™s a given โ€“ oh my god, does Katie know? Because I can understand your mam and Joey knowing, but I swear if you told Katie Wilmot before me then Iโ€™m going to be seriously pissed. I donโ€™t care if sheโ€™s your next-door neighbor, Iโ€™m the one whoโ€™s had your back from the dawn of time, bitch.โ€

โ€œCase, youโ€™re going to need to tellย meย what the hell youโ€™re talking about, because Iโ€™m genuinely lost here, babe.โ€

Casey stared at me for the longest moment before her blue eyes widened and her brows shot up. โ€œOfย courseย they donโ€™t know,โ€ she mumbled, pressing a hand to her brow like she had a sudden migraine. โ€œBecauseย youย donโ€™t know.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t know what?โ€

โ€œAoif.โ€ My best friend shrugged helplessly, before saying, โ€œI think you might be in the family way.โ€

I took in the sight of her comical expression and burst out laughing. โ€œAoif, Iโ€™m being totally serious here.โ€

โ€œI know you are,โ€ I agreed, still laughing. โ€œThatโ€™s what makes it so funny.โ€

โ€œAoife.โ€

โ€œOh my god, no. Iโ€™m not pregnant, Case,โ€ I choked out, trying to sober my features. โ€œWhy would you even think that?โ€

โ€œWhen was your last period?โ€ I gaped at her. โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œYour last period,โ€ she urged, tone serious. โ€œWhen was that exactly?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m due on,โ€ I told her.

โ€œNo.โ€ She shook her head. โ€œNo, youโ€™re not.โ€

โ€œI think Iโ€™d know when my period is due,โ€ I replied, tone defensive now, as the funny side of this conversation quickly faded.

โ€œYou would think,โ€ she muttered, pressing her fingers to her temples. โ€œListen to me. Since first year, weโ€™ve always been in sync. The third week of the month. Like clockwork.โ€

โ€œSo?โ€

โ€œSo, youโ€™re either two weeks late on last monthโ€™s one, or two weeks early for this monthโ€™s one.โ€

โ€œIโ€™mโ€ฆno, that canโ€™t be right.โ€ Shaking my head, I reached into my bag and grabbed my phone. โ€œIโ€™m due on.โ€ Tapping furiously on the buttons of my shiny new Nokia 3510i, my secret Santa Christmas present from Nana Healy, I searched through the calendar notes, panic rising in my chest at a rapid speed. โ€œIโ€™m not late โ€“ oh, thank Jesus!โ€ Exhaling a ragged breath when I found what I was looking for, I handed the phone to her and physically sagged in relief. โ€œSee?โ€

โ€œWhat am I looking at here?โ€

โ€œI knew I wasnโ€™t late,โ€ I told her, pointing at the saved note. โ€œI had a switch up a couple of months back, where it came early, but Iโ€™m fine, see? My last one started on the fourteenth.โ€

โ€œYeah, that was December, Aoif.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ I shook my head. โ€œNo, no, that was January.โ€

โ€œNo, babe,โ€ she corrected, tapping her long nail against the screen of my phone. โ€œIt was December.โ€

โ€œThat canโ€™t be right.โ€

โ€œTell me that you had a period last month?โ€ she begged, voice holding a note of anxiety similar to the feeling rising up inside of me. โ€œAoife, please. Tell me โ€”โ€

โ€œI did,โ€ I strangled out, snatching my phone back up, and furiously checking through every calendar note and outbox message I could find only to come up empty. โ€œOfย courseย I did. I had one at the end of Januaryโ€ฆ exceptโ€ฆโ€

โ€œExcept what?โ€

โ€œWell, it was weird,โ€ I strangled out, feeling my anxiety rise. โ€œIt was super light and only lasted a day or two. It was like some light spotting that just tapered off.โ€

โ€œDear Jesus,โ€ Casey cried, slapping the heel of her hand against her forehead. โ€œThat could have been implantation bleeding.โ€

โ€œWhat the hell is implantation bleeding?โ€ I demanded, eyes wide and full of terror. โ€œImplantation of what?โ€

โ€œOf Joeyโ€™s strongest fucking swimmer!โ€ Casey strangled out. โ€œSeriously, I know what Iโ€™m talking about. Itโ€™s like this teeny-tiny period like spotting that can trick you into thinking youโ€™re having a period. It happened to my cousin Lisa. You know Lisa, with the twins?โ€

โ€œYes, Jesus, I know Lisa,โ€ I wailed. โ€œBut thatโ€™s not happening to me.โ€

โ€œYou had a lot going on back at Christmas.โ€ My best friend gave me a worrying look. โ€œYou know, with Joey going off the rails and stuff. Maybe you missed a pill or something?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not pregnant, Casey!โ€ I practically hissed, feeling the blood rush to my head at record speed. Heat encompassed my body, flooding my cheeks, and making me want to run at top speed as far away from this conversation as I could get. โ€œIโ€™m not, okay? I canโ€™t be. And Iย neverย miss my pill.ย Never.โ€

โ€œI know you donโ€™t,โ€ she was quick to soothe, reaching out to place a hand on mine. โ€œI believe you.โ€ She exhaled heavily before continuing, โ€œItโ€™s just that you and Joey were going through all of that crap in the new year, and your head was a little screwed up. Maybe, it slipped your mind.”

โ€œNo,โ€ I snapped, rejecting any other thoughts. โ€œNothing slipped my mind.

Iโ€™m careful, Case.โ€

โ€œWere you on antibiotics?โ€ she offered then. โ€œBecause certain types can mess with the pill and make it ineffective? Because thatโ€™s how my own mam ended up with me.โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ I strangled out, feeling weak. โ€œNothing like that.โ€ โ€œWere you sick? Have you had any bugs?โ€

โ€œCasey!โ€

โ€œBecause your period has deserted you, youโ€™ve been eating like a horse for the past two months, and your boobs have definitely gotten biggerโ€ฆโ€œ Words trailing off, she reached for the hem of my jersey. โ€œAnd I mean, no offense, babe, but you do look like youโ€™ve packed a couple of pounds on your lower belly.โ€

โ€œStop it!โ€ I cried out, holding a hand up. โ€œJust stop, okay?โ€ โ€œIโ€™m trying to be supportive here, Aoif,โ€ she defended.

โ€œWell donโ€™t,โ€ I cried out. โ€œI did the right thing, Casey. I followed the rules. I waited for the right guy. I took my time. I took the damnย pill. This is not supposed to happen to me. Seriously, this is all a big mistake.โ€

โ€œMaybe?โ€ she offered with a grimace. โ€œOr maybe, you need to consider making an appointment with your doctor, because whether you want to believe it or not, Aoif, itโ€™s looking a lot likeโ€”โ€

โ€œShh. Donโ€™t say it. Just start praying.โ€ โ€œTo who?โ€

โ€œSt. Anthony,โ€ I strangled out, dropping to my knees, and clasping my hands together. โ€œHeโ€™s the saint weโ€™re supposed to pray to when things go missing, isnโ€™t he?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t think St. Anthony can help find your missing period, Aoif.โ€

โ€œYou never know.โ€œ

โ€œMr. Ryan sent me to tell you both that you need to get your asses out on the pitch,โ€ Danielle interrupted, stalking into the changing room. โ€œOr heโ€™ll save you both a seat in detention at lunchtime.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re coming,โ€ Casey mumbled, making no move to get up, eyes still glued to mine.

โ€œHe said now.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re coming,โ€ I snapped, springing up and hurrying for the door, needing to get as far away from this conversation as I could.

โ€œAoife,โ€ Casey called after me. โ€œWait.โ€ I didnโ€™t wait.

I didnโ€™t answer her, either.

I couldnโ€™t.

Not when my fear was paralyzing me.
