Chapter no 129 -โ€Œ โ€ŒMEET THE PARENTSโ€ฆ KIND OF

Redeeming 6 (Boys of Tommen, #4)

JOEY

LIKE A FLURRYย of unrestrained blonde energy, Edel Kavanagh strutted into the room the morning after our phone call, reminding me of a glammed- up version of Sarah Connor fromย The Terminator.

Flanking her in his usual attire, which consisted of a top end, tailored suit, with an amused expression etched on his face, and a briefcase in hand, was John Sr.

โ€œJoey,โ€ Edel exclaimed when she spotted me leaning over the windowsill, thoroughly enjoying the cigarette Iโ€™d managed to snag from one the security guards Iโ€™d become friendly with after giving him a hand to change a flat, while trying not to set off the smoke alarm.

As soon as her eyes landed on me, the hard expression sheโ€™d been wearing melted away. โ€œOh love, would you look at you.โ€ Shaking her head, she smiled widely, as she rushed towards me. โ€œLook at him, John. Isnโ€™t he only handsome?โ€

โ€œSweetheart, weโ€™ve talked about this,โ€ John tried to interject, but she was already up in my personal space with her arms wrapped tightly around me.

โ€œI ahโ€ฆโ€ Feeling awkward, I quickly tossed the butt out the window patted her back, mentally counting down from five before escaping from her

stranglehold. โ€œWhen I said I could use your help, I didnโ€™t mean you had to drive halfway across the country to see me.โ€

โ€œExcuse me,โ€ one of the porters rushed into my room, all red-faced and flushed. โ€œAll visitors need to report to reception. And like I told you already, lady, patients are forbidden to have guests in their room.โ€œ

โ€œAh, would you cool your jets, detective inspector,โ€ Edel drawled sarcastically, dismissing him with a flick of her wrist. โ€œDo I look like Iโ€™m smuggling contraband up my backside?โ€

โ€œEdel,โ€ John said wearily.

โ€œNow.โ€ Turning her attention back to me, she reached up and pushed my hair off my face and smiled. โ€œLetโ€™s go, love.โ€

โ€œGo where?โ€

โ€œTo sort this mess out.โ€

โ€œAS YOUโ€™RE WELL AWARE, my husband and I have been awarded guardianship of the Lynch children,โ€ Edel declared a little while later, as she paced the visitorsโ€™ room, while John looked on from his perch on the leather couch with his usual amused expression. Sitting beside him was a stressed looking Darren. โ€œIf Joey was under eighteen, then he would be legally under our care, too.โ€ She turned to stare at Dr. B. โ€œHowever, I consider age to be just a number, doctor. That boy belongs with us. He has a home with our family โ€“ย hisย family โ€“ for the rest of his life. If you have concerns about his ability to cope after leaving treatment, then be rest assured that he will have the world of support at his fingertips.โ€

โ€œHis brother has voiced some concerns about the pressures he feels Joey will be exposed to upon discharge.โ€

โ€œMy brotherโ€™s a dick,โ€ I sneered, glaring across the room at enemy number one.

Darren sighed heavily. โ€œJoey.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ I shrugged unapologetically. โ€œYouย are.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not doing any of this to hurt you,โ€ my brother was quick to defend. โ€œIโ€™m trying to protect your sobriety, Joe.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not yours to protect,โ€ I snapped. โ€œItโ€™s mine, Darren. Staying clean isย myย responsibility. Looking after myself is my goddamn responsibility, not yours, and no offense, but Iโ€™ve been doing it for long enough without ya.โ€

โ€œYeah,โ€ he muttered, rubbing his jaw. โ€œAnd look where being left to your own devices got you.โ€

I narrowed my eyes in disgust. โ€œItโ€™s a good thing Iโ€™mย reformed, because that snide comment deserves a smack in the mouth.โ€

โ€œOkay, everyone,โ€ Dr. B interjected. โ€œLetโ€™s just take a breather, shall we?โ€

โ€œIf he wants to come home with us, then I really donโ€™t see why you would want to stop him โ€“ or how, for that matter,โ€ Edel interjected hotly.

Everyone started speaking over each other then. The doctors.

The therapists.

The social workers.

The bulldozing blonde.

My brother.

โ€œAll Iโ€™m trying to do is protect him,โ€ Darren exclaimed, throwing his hands up in defeat. โ€œThatโ€™s it.โ€

โ€œNobody is questioning your intentions, Darren.โ€

โ€œI am.โ€ I held a hand up and waved it around. โ€œIโ€™mย questioning his intentions.โ€

โ€œDarren is concerned that without schooling or college to focus on, Joey will fall back into old patterns,โ€ another member of my team offered, turning to the Kavanaghs. โ€œHeโ€™s also worried that Aoife belongs to the same friendship circle where Joey was exposed to substance abuse in the first place.โ€

โ€œWell, I donโ€™t believe that for a second,โ€ Edel was quick to defend. โ€œAnd if you met the girl, youโ€™d wholeheartedly agree with me.โ€

โ€œShe was never a part of the problem,โ€ I repeated for what felt like the millionth time. โ€œShe was never a part of the drug scene. Iโ€™veย toldย you this.โ€

โ€œNot to mention the pressure of a newborn baby,โ€ Greg, my turncoat counsellor chimed in. โ€œItโ€™s a lot to put on his shoulders.โ€

โ€œAnd what aboutย herย shoulders?โ€ I demanded, glaring at him. โ€œAoifeโ€™s fuckingย shoulders? Sheโ€™s the one at home having to deal with all of this on her own. Have you thought about that?โ€

โ€œOur job is to consider your welfare.โ€ โ€œAnd my job is to considerย hers!โ€

โ€œAoife has her family to look after her, Joey,โ€ I heard Darren say. โ€œWhy

canโ€™t you let yours look after you?โ€

โ€œBecause sheย isย my family, Darren!โ€ I roared, losing my cool. โ€œHow do you notย getย that? Youโ€™re a smart fella Christ, you have a fancy education and a shiny college degree under your belt, so how can you be so fucking dense?โ€

โ€œJoe โ€”โ€

โ€œHow can you not see that what youโ€™re doing here is wrong?โ€ โ€œJoey, please calm down.โ€

Like hell I was calming down.

โ€œYou know Iโ€™d be dead without her, right?โ€ I declared hoarsely. โ€œThis entire conversation wouldnโ€™t be happening because I wouldnโ€™t beย hereย to argue about if it wasnโ€™t for Aoife Molloy.โ€

โ€œJesus.โ€ My brother winced like my words caused him physical pain. โ€œDonโ€™t say that, Joe.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s the truth, Dar,โ€ I retorted hoarsely. โ€œI wouldnโ€™t have made it to eighteen without her. Hell, I probably wouldnโ€™t have made it to fifteen without her. You werenโ€™t there. You didnโ€™t see. I was a piece of shit. Sincerely. I was fucking terrible. To myself. To her. My behavior towards her was horrendous. I was the worst possible version of myself. And still, she stuck it out with me. She saw something worth saving in me, and she decided to love me anyway, and I am so fucking thankful that she did.โ€ I shook my head. โ€œYou will never understand how much I owe that girl. How much I fucking worship the ground she walks on!โ€

โ€œI know you love her,โ€ he groaned, sounding pained. โ€œI can see it, but it scares the hell out of me.โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œBecauseโ€ฆโ€ he stopped short and shook his head.

โ€œSay it,โ€ I pushed, already knowing what was on the tip of his tongue. โ€œTell them all how much I remind you ofย him. Just like I reminded Mam ofย him. You know, if you had said that to me three months ago, I would have crumbled,โ€ I shot back. โ€œBut not anymore because I might not know who I am, Darren, but I sure as hell know who Iโ€™m not!โ€

โ€œNo, itโ€™s not that,โ€ he tried to coax. โ€œItโ€™s not you individually. Itโ€™s the two of you as a couple. When you get out of here, you donโ€™t have a job, or school, or hurling anything to focus on except her. To me, that reeks of toxicity. It scares the damn hell out of me, Joey, because weโ€™ve both seen what happens when teenagers who are obsessed with each other shack up and play house. Weโ€™ve lived through it, Joey, and I donโ€™t want that for you. I donโ€™t want you and Aoife becoming a second-generation version ofย them.โ€

โ€œJesus Christ.โ€

โ€œLook, maybe Iโ€™m projecting my own trauma on your relationship here, Joe, but Iโ€™m so fucking scared for you. Iโ€™m so afraid of sitting back and watching you follow in Mam and Dadโ€™s footsteps. Itโ€™s the only reason Mam and I tried to put a stop to it.โ€

โ€œPut a stop to our relationship?โ€

When he didnโ€™t respond, my blood ran cold. โ€œThe pregnancy.โ€

โ€œIt was at the start.โ€ His face reddened. โ€œEarly on.โ€

Of course they did.

โ€œYou tried to put a stop to my baby?โ€ I bit out through clenched teeth. โ€œIs that what youโ€™re saying? You and Mam tried to convince Aoife to get rid ofย myย baby?โ€

โ€œOkay, I think we should take a short break.โ€

โ€œI think he should answer the fucking question,โ€ I snapped, ignoring my social workerโ€™s attempts to diffuse the situation. โ€œWhat did you and Mam do to my girlfriend, Darren?โ€

โ€œWe didnโ€™t do anything to your girlfriend,โ€ he explained with a weary sigh. โ€œI offered her an alternative.โ€

โ€œMeaning you offered to foot the bill for an abortion?โ€ When he didnโ€™t reply, I choked out a humorless laugh. โ€œI donโ€™t fucking believe this.โ€

โ€œJoey, please calm down.โ€œ

โ€œAnd people wonder why I sank into addiction.โ€ I shook my head and looked around the room. โ€œTake a good fucking look, people. This right here is what Iโ€™ve been dealing with. My own mother and brother tried to do that to me!โ€œ

โ€œI was trying to help you,โ€ Darren tried to explain. โ€œYouโ€™re too young to be a father.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve alwaysย beenย a father!โ€ I roared back, chest heaving. โ€œAnd Iโ€™ve done a pretty fucking good job with the four Iโ€™ve raised. And yeah, Iโ€™m a mess, and yeah, Iโ€™m an addict, but Iโ€™m a good father! Iโ€™m a good fucking parent, Darren. I kept them alive. I kept them fed, and loved, and nurtured and goddamn educated. I did that. Not you. Not him. Not Mam. Me. So, call me a junkie and whatever the hell else you want to call me, but donโ€™t say that Iโ€™m too young to be a father!โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t mean it like that,โ€ he argued. โ€œI meant that I didnโ€™t want you saddled down with โ€”โ€

โ€œIย wantย my baby, Darren!โ€

You could have heard a pin drop in the room. Everything went eerily quiet.

Finally, Darren broke the silence when he said, โ€œYou do?โ€

โ€œDamn straight I do,โ€ I confirmed, furious. โ€œHow fucking dare you and Mam try to take that away from me.โ€

โ€œI realize now that it wasnโ€™t my place to get involved.โ€

โ€œNo, it wasnโ€™t your place,โ€ I sneered, beyond furious. โ€œAnd youโ€™re goddamn lucky Aoife didnโ€™t fold under the pressure I have no doubt you put her under.โ€ I shook my head in disgust. โ€œJesus Christ, Dar. I wouldย neverย do that to you. Never. Every choice youโ€™ve ever made, Iโ€™ve had your back. Iโ€™ve alwaysย supportedย you.ย Defendedย you.โ€

โ€œI know you have.โ€

โ€œThen why couldnโ€™t you do the same for me?โ€ โ€œI thought thatโ€™s what Iย wasย doing.โ€

โ€œBy hating on my girlfriend?โ€ I spat. โ€œJesus, Darren. After all the shit

weโ€™ve been through,ย whyย would you do that to me? Why would you try to scare off the one good thing in my life?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t hate Aoif, Joe. Christ, I donโ€™t even know the girl. Not really. Iโ€™m justโ€ฆ I wanted aย differentย life for you.โ€

โ€œWell, it doesnโ€™t matter what you want, Dar, because this right hereย isย my life,โ€ I shot back, shaking. โ€œItโ€™s mine to live, and I plan on living it side by side with her. Because newsflash, asshole, that girlย isย my life. Her and our baby. And if she wants a ring, sheโ€™ll get it. And a house, sheโ€™ll get that, too. And if the time comes where she wants more kids, then Iโ€™ll give them to her. Whatever she wants. Because weโ€™re mirrors. Her and I. Weโ€™re aligned.ย Thatโ€™s

my future, Darren, and if you keep meddling in it, then you wonโ€™t be a part of it.โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t mean that.โ€

โ€œI have never been more serious in my life.โ€

โ€œThis is a disaster,โ€ Darren mumbled, dropping his head in his hands. โ€œOn the contrary,โ€ Dr. B said. โ€œI think this conversation was long

overdue.โ€

โ€œDamn straight,โ€ I agreed as six years of resentment and pain burst to the surface. โ€œYou left me, Darren. You fuckingย leftย me with them. I loved you most. I looked up to you. I worshipped the goddamn ground you walked on, and you justย disappearedย from my life.โ€

โ€œI know,โ€ he choked out. โ€œJesus, I know.โ€

โ€œI was twelve.โ€ My voice was strangled and my chest heaving, as I spilled my pain. โ€œTwelve, Darren. When you were twelve, you hadย me. When I was twelve, I hadย nobody.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m so sorry, Joe.โ€

โ€œSaying youโ€™re sorry doesnโ€™t fix it,โ€ I choked out. โ€œItโ€™s aย word. I know you mean it; I know youโ€™re sorry, but itโ€™s a fucking word, Darren. It doesnโ€™t fix theย holeย you left in me.โ€

He flinched. โ€œJoe.โ€

โ€œWhat hurts the most isnโ€™t the fact that you left,โ€ I admitted, wiping a tear from my cheek. โ€œI know you had to go. You were dying in that house. I get it. I understand that. What hurts the most is the fact that I stayed, and sheย stillย loved you more! And Iโ€™m jealous of that. Iโ€™m jealous and Iโ€™m resentful and Iโ€™m so fucking hurt that nothing I ever did was enough for her! And then you

came back,โ€ I quickly continued. โ€œAnd it was as if everything I did for her, every sacrifice I made, every slap I took, was irrelevant.ย Iย was irrelevant because you were all she could see. I mean, letโ€™s face it, Dar; you were all she ever saw, even when we were kids, but it never bothered me until you left. She put you on this pedestal, her precious, perfect first born, and nothing I did in the flesh could match her memory of you!โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ Dr. B exclaimed, almost punching the air with excitement. โ€œFantastic, Joey.โ€

Darren and I both turned to gape at her. โ€œExcuse me?โ€

โ€œVerbalization,โ€ she quickly explained. โ€œFantastic verbalization of your feelings. We have been working on this for months.โ€ She smiled up at me like I was her favorite student and offered me a supportive thumbโ€™s up, while every other member of my medical team looked on in horror.

โ€œListen, if I could interrupt for a moment,โ€ John Sr. interjected in that cool, calm, and collected tone of voice, ready to steady the ship. โ€œI may have a solution that could be of benefit to everyone.โ€

โ€œOh?โ€ Edel sank down on the edge of the couch beside her husband and placed a hand on his knee. โ€œDo tell, love?โ€

Cool as a breeze, John squeezed his wifeโ€™s hand affectionately before turning his attention to the many faces watching him. โ€œYou want to extend Joeyโ€™s treatment under the guise of uncertainty around his ability to cope under the pressures facing him when he returns home to Ballylaggin.โ€ Turning to Darren, he added, โ€œFrom what Iโ€™m gathering, one of your greatest concerns is your brotherโ€™s lack of prospects.โ€

โ€œHe doesnโ€™t have any qualifications,โ€ Darren replied with a grateful nod. โ€œHe hasnโ€™t even finished school. He doesnโ€™t have a trade. He doesnโ€™t have a

well-paying job. Hurling is out of the question for him. They wonโ€™t have him back. Iโ€™ve tried. Neither will BCS. Theyโ€™re standing firm on their decision. There isnโ€™t a school in the area who will consider taking him in.โ€

โ€œLike I give a fuck,โ€ I snorted.

โ€œYou should,โ€ Darren growled. โ€œYouโ€™ve got a baby to look after โ€“ something youโ€™ve been extremely vocal about telling everyone. How do you propose to do that on a minimum wage job. Because letโ€™s face it, Joe, you with your record, you would be lucky to get a job stacking shelves.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m aย goodย worker.โ€

โ€œI never said you werenโ€™t,โ€ my brother argued. โ€œBut you have a record as long as your arm stacked up against you.โ€

โ€œWhat if there was an alternative?โ€ John suggested calmly. โ€œWhat if I could guarantee Joey a place in sixth year at the same school his siblings attend. Would that appease everyoneโ€™s concerns?โ€

โ€œThe fuck?โ€ I frowned. โ€œWhat are youโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œTommen?โ€ Darrenโ€™s eyes widened. โ€œThey wonโ€™t have him, John. Especially not after the spectacle back in May. Do you think I havenโ€™t tried? He was removed from the school by the Gards for physically assaulting pupils from Tommen.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s already done,โ€ John replied calmly, this time turning to me. โ€œYou have a place at Tommen College to complete your studies, Joey. Itโ€™s yours for the taking.โ€ Shrugging, he added, โ€œIf youโ€™llย takeย it.โ€

โ€œTommen.โ€ I stared blankly at him. โ€œYou want me to go toย Tommen?โ€ โ€œI want you to consider it.โ€

โ€œAre you serious?โ€ Excitement filled my brotherโ€™s voice. โ€œHow in Godโ€™s name did you manage to pull that off?โ€

โ€œHow do you think, Darren?โ€ I deadpanned. โ€œMoney.โ€ โ€œHeโ€™ll take it,โ€ my brother answered for me.

โ€œHe wonโ€™t,โ€ I was quick to argue, turning back to John. โ€œIโ€™m not going

back to secondary school, John. I need to find work that brings home a steady paycheck at the end of the week.โ€

โ€œNo, no, no, it makes sense,โ€ Edel hurried to say, turning to face me. โ€œThe new school term resumes on September 1st, Joey love. If you were to be enrolled at Tommen, then you would need to be discharged beforeโ€ฆโ€

โ€œBefore the baby comes,โ€ I filled in, as my brain churned into gear.

โ€œIt would be a wonderful foundation to build your future on, Joey,โ€ Dr. B offered up her two cents. โ€œStability and friendship, and a solid education.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll send you money,โ€ Darren blurted out. โ€œEvery week. Straight into your bank account. Whatever it takes.โ€

โ€œPocket money?โ€ I stared blankly. โ€œDo you think Iโ€™m a little kid?โ€

โ€œNo, I think youโ€™re one of the smartest people I know, and the prospect of you having an actual shot at this โ€“ at anย educationย โ€“ is too important to turn your nose up. I want this for you, Joe. Think about the job opportunities. Think about college. Your future, brother.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not going to college,โ€ I argued, feeling overwhelmed. โ€œItโ€™s not on the cards for me.โ€

โ€œItย wasnโ€™tย on the cards for you before, but itย canย be now,โ€ he argued thickly. โ€œWhy shouldnโ€™t you have the same opportunities as the rest of us? You deserve this just as much as Shannon and Tadhg. Heโ€™s starting first year

there too, you know. At Tommen. You would be there to look out for him. To show him the way. Think about it, Joe. This could be life changing for you.โ€

โ€œAre you alright, Joey love?โ€

โ€œNo, Edel, Iโ€™m not,โ€ I admitted, knees bopping restlessly, as I sat opposite her and John at one of the picnic tables in the communal gardens after the meeting.

โ€œYou can thank Gerard for those,โ€ she said, pointing disapprovingly to the cigarette in my hand. โ€œHe smuggled three packets into the bags I packed for you today.โ€

Good man, Gussie.

Taking a deep drag of my cigarette, I looked around the garden, feeling beyond agitated.

โ€œI planted those,โ€ I decided to tell them, pointing to a bed of Black-Eyed Susans, standing alone amongst a flurry of pink Dahlias and Hydrangeas. โ€œThose ones are mine.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ve spent time working in the garden?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s a part of the treatment,โ€ I explained, waving a hand around aimlessly. โ€œWe talk, we sit around in circles during group therapy and cry, we plant flowers, we paint shit.โ€ I took another drag of my smoke before saying, โ€œItโ€™s all very woe-is-me around here. Just one big competition to see whose life is the most fucked-up really.โ€

John smirked. โ€œWell then, Iโ€™m sure youโ€™re in the lead by a country mile.โ€ I snorted. โ€œYou know it.โ€

โ€œJoey love,โ€ Edel began, tapping her perfectly manicured nails on the table. โ€œAbout Tommen. I know your first instinct is to say no, but please donโ€™t do that. Just give yourself some time to mull it over before deciding.โ€

โ€œOkay,โ€ I replied, feeling overwhelmed at the prospect. โ€œIโ€™ll think about

it.โ€
