JOEY
LIKE A FLURRYย of unrestrained blonde energy, Edel Kavanagh strutted into the room the morning after our phone call, reminding me of a glammed- up version of Sarah Connor fromย The Terminator.
Flanking her in his usual attire, which consisted of a top end, tailored suit, with an amused expression etched on his face, and a briefcase in hand, was John Sr.
โJoey,โ Edel exclaimed when she spotted me leaning over the windowsill, thoroughly enjoying the cigarette Iโd managed to snag from one the security guards Iโd become friendly with after giving him a hand to change a flat, while trying not to set off the smoke alarm.
As soon as her eyes landed on me, the hard expression sheโd been wearing melted away. โOh love, would you look at you.โ Shaking her head, she smiled widely, as she rushed towards me. โLook at him, John. Isnโt he only handsome?โ
โSweetheart, weโve talked about this,โ John tried to interject, but she was already up in my personal space with her arms wrapped tightly around me.
โI ahโฆโ Feeling awkward, I quickly tossed the butt out the window patted her back, mentally counting down from five before escaping from her
stranglehold. โWhen I said I could use your help, I didnโt mean you had to drive halfway across the country to see me.โ
โExcuse me,โ one of the porters rushed into my room, all red-faced and flushed. โAll visitors need to report to reception. And like I told you already, lady, patients are forbidden to have guests in their room.โ
โAh, would you cool your jets, detective inspector,โ Edel drawled sarcastically, dismissing him with a flick of her wrist. โDo I look like Iโm smuggling contraband up my backside?โ
โEdel,โ John said wearily.
โNow.โ Turning her attention back to me, she reached up and pushed my hair off my face and smiled. โLetโs go, love.โ
โGo where?โ
โTo sort this mess out.โ
โAS YOUโRE WELL AWARE, my husband and I have been awarded guardianship of the Lynch children,โ Edel declared a little while later, as she paced the visitorsโ room, while John looked on from his perch on the leather couch with his usual amused expression. Sitting beside him was a stressed looking Darren. โIf Joey was under eighteen, then he would be legally under our care, too.โ She turned to stare at Dr. B. โHowever, I consider age to be just a number, doctor. That boy belongs with us. He has a home with our family โย hisย family โ for the rest of his life. If you have concerns about his ability to cope after leaving treatment, then be rest assured that he will have the world of support at his fingertips.โ
โHis brother has voiced some concerns about the pressures he feels Joey will be exposed to upon discharge.โ
โMy brotherโs a dick,โ I sneered, glaring across the room at enemy number one.
Darren sighed heavily. โJoey.โ
โWhat?โ I shrugged unapologetically. โYouย are.โ
โIโm not doing any of this to hurt you,โ my brother was quick to defend. โIโm trying to protect your sobriety, Joe.โ
โItโs not yours to protect,โ I snapped. โItโs mine, Darren. Staying clean isย myย responsibility. Looking after myself is my goddamn responsibility, not yours, and no offense, but Iโve been doing it for long enough without ya.โ
โYeah,โ he muttered, rubbing his jaw. โAnd look where being left to your own devices got you.โ
I narrowed my eyes in disgust. โItโs a good thing Iโmย reformed, because that snide comment deserves a smack in the mouth.โ
โOkay, everyone,โ Dr. B interjected. โLetโs just take a breather, shall we?โ
โIf he wants to come home with us, then I really donโt see why you would want to stop him โ or how, for that matter,โ Edel interjected hotly.
Everyone started speaking over each other then. The doctors.
The therapists.
The social workers.
The bulldozing blonde.
My brother.
โAll Iโm trying to do is protect him,โ Darren exclaimed, throwing his hands up in defeat. โThatโs it.โ
โNobody is questioning your intentions, Darren.โ
โI am.โ I held a hand up and waved it around. โIโmย questioning his intentions.โ
โDarren is concerned that without schooling or college to focus on, Joey will fall back into old patterns,โ another member of my team offered, turning to the Kavanaghs. โHeโs also worried that Aoife belongs to the same friendship circle where Joey was exposed to substance abuse in the first place.โ
โWell, I donโt believe that for a second,โ Edel was quick to defend. โAnd if you met the girl, youโd wholeheartedly agree with me.โ
โShe was never a part of the problem,โ I repeated for what felt like the millionth time. โShe was never a part of the drug scene. Iโveย toldย you this.โ
โNot to mention the pressure of a newborn baby,โ Greg, my turncoat counsellor chimed in. โItโs a lot to put on his shoulders.โ
โAnd what aboutย herย shoulders?โ I demanded, glaring at him. โAoifeโs fuckingย shoulders? Sheโs the one at home having to deal with all of this on her own. Have you thought about that?โ
โOur job is to consider your welfare.โ โAnd my job is to considerย hers!โ
โAoife has her family to look after her, Joey,โ I heard Darren say. โWhy
canโt you let yours look after you?โ
โBecause sheย isย my family, Darren!โ I roared, losing my cool. โHow do you notย getย that? Youโre a smart fella Christ, you have a fancy education and a shiny college degree under your belt, so how can you be so fucking dense?โ
โJoe โโ
โHow can you not see that what youโre doing here is wrong?โ โJoey, please calm down.โ
Like hell I was calming down.
โYou know Iโd be dead without her, right?โ I declared hoarsely. โThis entire conversation wouldnโt be happening because I wouldnโt beย hereย to argue about if it wasnโt for Aoife Molloy.โ
โJesus.โ My brother winced like my words caused him physical pain. โDonโt say that, Joe.โ
โItโs the truth, Dar,โ I retorted hoarsely. โI wouldnโt have made it to eighteen without her. Hell, I probably wouldnโt have made it to fifteen without her. You werenโt there. You didnโt see. I was a piece of shit. Sincerely. I was fucking terrible. To myself. To her. My behavior towards her was horrendous. I was the worst possible version of myself. And still, she stuck it out with me. She saw something worth saving in me, and she decided to love me anyway, and I am so fucking thankful that she did.โ I shook my head. โYou will never understand how much I owe that girl. How much I fucking worship the ground she walks on!โ
โI know you love her,โ he groaned, sounding pained. โI can see it, but it scares the hell out of me.โ
โWhy?โ
โBecauseโฆโ he stopped short and shook his head.
โSay it,โ I pushed, already knowing what was on the tip of his tongue. โTell them all how much I remind you ofย him. Just like I reminded Mam ofย him. You know, if you had said that to me three months ago, I would have crumbled,โ I shot back. โBut not anymore because I might not know who I am, Darren, but I sure as hell know who Iโm not!โ
โNo, itโs not that,โ he tried to coax. โItโs not you individually. Itโs the two of you as a couple. When you get out of here, you donโt have a job, or school, or hurling anything to focus on except her. To me, that reeks of toxicity. It scares the damn hell out of me, Joey, because weโve both seen what happens when teenagers who are obsessed with each other shack up and play house. Weโve lived through it, Joey, and I donโt want that for you. I donโt want you and Aoife becoming a second-generation version ofย them.โ
โJesus Christ.โ
โLook, maybe Iโm projecting my own trauma on your relationship here, Joe, but Iโm so fucking scared for you. Iโm so afraid of sitting back and watching you follow in Mam and Dadโs footsteps. Itโs the only reason Mam and I tried to put a stop to it.โ
โPut a stop to our relationship?โ
When he didnโt respond, my blood ran cold. โThe pregnancy.โ
โIt was at the start.โ His face reddened. โEarly on.โ
Of course they did.
โYou tried to put a stop to my baby?โ I bit out through clenched teeth. โIs that what youโre saying? You and Mam tried to convince Aoife to get rid ofย myย baby?โ
โOkay, I think we should take a short break.โ
โI think he should answer the fucking question,โ I snapped, ignoring my social workerโs attempts to diffuse the situation. โWhat did you and Mam do to my girlfriend, Darren?โ
โWe didnโt do anything to your girlfriend,โ he explained with a weary sigh. โI offered her an alternative.โ
โMeaning you offered to foot the bill for an abortion?โ When he didnโt reply, I choked out a humorless laugh. โI donโt fucking believe this.โ
โJoey, please calm down.โ
โAnd people wonder why I sank into addiction.โ I shook my head and looked around the room. โTake a good fucking look, people. This right here is what Iโve been dealing with. My own mother and brother tried to do that to me!โ
โI was trying to help you,โ Darren tried to explain. โYouโre too young to be a father.โ
โIโve alwaysย beenย a father!โ I roared back, chest heaving. โAnd Iโve done a pretty fucking good job with the four Iโve raised. And yeah, Iโm a mess, and yeah, Iโm an addict, but Iโm a good father! Iโm a good fucking parent, Darren. I kept them alive. I kept them fed, and loved, and nurtured and goddamn educated. I did that. Not you. Not him. Not Mam. Me. So, call me a junkie and whatever the hell else you want to call me, but donโt say that Iโm too young to be a father!โ
โI didnโt mean it like that,โ he argued. โI meant that I didnโt want you saddled down with โโ
โIย wantย my baby, Darren!โ
You could have heard a pin drop in the room. Everything went eerily quiet.
Finally, Darren broke the silence when he said, โYou do?โ
โDamn straight I do,โ I confirmed, furious. โHow fucking dare you and Mam try to take that away from me.โ
โI realize now that it wasnโt my place to get involved.โ
โNo, it wasnโt your place,โ I sneered, beyond furious. โAnd youโre goddamn lucky Aoife didnโt fold under the pressure I have no doubt you put her under.โ I shook my head in disgust. โJesus Christ, Dar. I wouldย neverย do that to you. Never. Every choice youโve ever made, Iโve had your back. Iโve alwaysย supportedย you.ย Defendedย you.โ
โI know you have.โ
โThen why couldnโt you do the same for me?โ โI thought thatโs what Iย wasย doing.โ
โBy hating on my girlfriend?โ I spat. โJesus, Darren. After all the shit
weโve been through,ย whyย would you do that to me? Why would you try to scare off the one good thing in my life?โ
โI donโt hate Aoif, Joe. Christ, I donโt even know the girl. Not really. Iโm justโฆ I wanted aย differentย life for you.โ
โWell, it doesnโt matter what you want, Dar, because this right hereย isย my life,โ I shot back, shaking. โItโs mine to live, and I plan on living it side by side with her. Because newsflash, asshole, that girlย isย my life. Her and our baby. And if she wants a ring, sheโll get it. And a house, sheโll get that, too. And if the time comes where she wants more kids, then Iโll give them to her. Whatever she wants. Because weโre mirrors. Her and I. Weโre aligned.ย Thatโs
my future, Darren, and if you keep meddling in it, then you wonโt be a part of it.โ
โYou donโt mean that.โ
โI have never been more serious in my life.โ
โThis is a disaster,โ Darren mumbled, dropping his head in his hands. โOn the contrary,โ Dr. B said. โI think this conversation was long
overdue.โ
โDamn straight,โ I agreed as six years of resentment and pain burst to the surface. โYou left me, Darren. You fuckingย leftย me with them. I loved you most. I looked up to you. I worshipped the goddamn ground you walked on, and you justย disappearedย from my life.โ
โI know,โ he choked out. โJesus, I know.โ
โI was twelve.โ My voice was strangled and my chest heaving, as I spilled my pain. โTwelve, Darren. When you were twelve, you hadย me. When I was twelve, I hadย nobody.โ
โIโm so sorry, Joe.โ
โSaying youโre sorry doesnโt fix it,โ I choked out. โItโs aย word. I know you mean it; I know youโre sorry, but itโs a fucking word, Darren. It doesnโt fix theย holeย you left in me.โ
He flinched. โJoe.โ
โWhat hurts the most isnโt the fact that you left,โ I admitted, wiping a tear from my cheek. โI know you had to go. You were dying in that house. I get it. I understand that. What hurts the most is the fact that I stayed, and sheย stillย loved you more! And Iโm jealous of that. Iโm jealous and Iโm resentful and Iโm so fucking hurt that nothing I ever did was enough for her! And then you
came back,โ I quickly continued. โAnd it was as if everything I did for her, every sacrifice I made, every slap I took, was irrelevant.ย Iย was irrelevant because you were all she could see. I mean, letโs face it, Dar; you were all she ever saw, even when we were kids, but it never bothered me until you left. She put you on this pedestal, her precious, perfect first born, and nothing I did in the flesh could match her memory of you!โ
โYes,โ Dr. B exclaimed, almost punching the air with excitement. โFantastic, Joey.โ
Darren and I both turned to gape at her. โExcuse me?โ
โVerbalization,โ she quickly explained. โFantastic verbalization of your feelings. We have been working on this for months.โ She smiled up at me like I was her favorite student and offered me a supportive thumbโs up, while every other member of my medical team looked on in horror.
โListen, if I could interrupt for a moment,โ John Sr. interjected in that cool, calm, and collected tone of voice, ready to steady the ship. โI may have a solution that could be of benefit to everyone.โ
โOh?โ Edel sank down on the edge of the couch beside her husband and placed a hand on his knee. โDo tell, love?โ
Cool as a breeze, John squeezed his wifeโs hand affectionately before turning his attention to the many faces watching him. โYou want to extend Joeyโs treatment under the guise of uncertainty around his ability to cope under the pressures facing him when he returns home to Ballylaggin.โ Turning to Darren, he added, โFrom what Iโm gathering, one of your greatest concerns is your brotherโs lack of prospects.โ
โHe doesnโt have any qualifications,โ Darren replied with a grateful nod. โHe hasnโt even finished school. He doesnโt have a trade. He doesnโt have a
well-paying job. Hurling is out of the question for him. They wonโt have him back. Iโve tried. Neither will BCS. Theyโre standing firm on their decision. There isnโt a school in the area who will consider taking him in.โ
โLike I give a fuck,โ I snorted.
โYou should,โ Darren growled. โYouโve got a baby to look after โ something youโve been extremely vocal about telling everyone. How do you propose to do that on a minimum wage job. Because letโs face it, Joe, you with your record, you would be lucky to get a job stacking shelves.โ
โIโm aย goodย worker.โ
โI never said you werenโt,โ my brother argued. โBut you have a record as long as your arm stacked up against you.โ
โWhat if there was an alternative?โ John suggested calmly. โWhat if I could guarantee Joey a place in sixth year at the same school his siblings attend. Would that appease everyoneโs concerns?โ
โThe fuck?โ I frowned. โWhat are youโฆ?โ
โTommen?โ Darrenโs eyes widened. โThey wonโt have him, John. Especially not after the spectacle back in May. Do you think I havenโt tried? He was removed from the school by the Gards for physically assaulting pupils from Tommen.โ
โItโs already done,โ John replied calmly, this time turning to me. โYou have a place at Tommen College to complete your studies, Joey. Itโs yours for the taking.โ Shrugging, he added, โIf youโllย takeย it.โ
โTommen.โ I stared blankly at him. โYou want me to go toย Tommen?โ โI want you to consider it.โ
โAre you serious?โ Excitement filled my brotherโs voice. โHow in Godโs name did you manage to pull that off?โ
โHow do you think, Darren?โ I deadpanned. โMoney.โ โHeโll take it,โ my brother answered for me.
โHe wonโt,โ I was quick to argue, turning back to John. โIโm not going
back to secondary school, John. I need to find work that brings home a steady paycheck at the end of the week.โ
โNo, no, no, it makes sense,โ Edel hurried to say, turning to face me. โThe new school term resumes on September 1st, Joey love. If you were to be enrolled at Tommen, then you would need to be discharged beforeโฆโ
โBefore the baby comes,โ I filled in, as my brain churned into gear.
โIt would be a wonderful foundation to build your future on, Joey,โ Dr. B offered up her two cents. โStability and friendship, and a solid education.โ
โIโll send you money,โ Darren blurted out. โEvery week. Straight into your bank account. Whatever it takes.โ
โPocket money?โ I stared blankly. โDo you think Iโm a little kid?โ
โNo, I think youโre one of the smartest people I know, and the prospect of you having an actual shot at this โ at anย educationย โ is too important to turn your nose up. I want this for you, Joe. Think about the job opportunities. Think about college. Your future, brother.โ
โIโm not going to college,โ I argued, feeling overwhelmed. โItโs not on the cards for me.โ
โItย wasnโtย on the cards for you before, but itย canย be now,โ he argued thickly. โWhy shouldnโt you have the same opportunities as the rest of us? You deserve this just as much as Shannon and Tadhg. Heโs starting first year
there too, you know. At Tommen. You would be there to look out for him. To show him the way. Think about it, Joe. This could be life changing for you.โ
โAre you alright, Joey love?โ
โNo, Edel, Iโm not,โ I admitted, knees bopping restlessly, as I sat opposite her and John at one of the picnic tables in the communal gardens after the meeting.
โYou can thank Gerard for those,โ she said, pointing disapprovingly to the cigarette in my hand. โHe smuggled three packets into the bags I packed for you today.โ
Good man, Gussie.
Taking a deep drag of my cigarette, I looked around the garden, feeling beyond agitated.
โI planted those,โ I decided to tell them, pointing to a bed of Black-Eyed Susans, standing alone amongst a flurry of pink Dahlias and Hydrangeas. โThose ones are mine.โ
โYouโve spent time working in the garden?โ
โItโs a part of the treatment,โ I explained, waving a hand around aimlessly. โWe talk, we sit around in circles during group therapy and cry, we plant flowers, we paint shit.โ I took another drag of my smoke before saying, โItโs all very woe-is-me around here. Just one big competition to see whose life is the most fucked-up really.โ
John smirked. โWell then, Iโm sure youโre in the lead by a country mile.โ I snorted. โYou know it.โ
โJoey love,โ Edel began, tapping her perfectly manicured nails on the table. โAbout Tommen. I know your first instinct is to say no, but please donโt do that. Just give yourself some time to mull it over before deciding.โ
โOkay,โ I replied, feeling overwhelmed at the prospect. โIโll think about
it.โ
