Chapter no 128 -โ€Œ FOSTER MOTHERS

Redeeming 6 (Boys of Tommen, #4)

JOEY

RIDICULOUSLY NERVOUS,ย I dialed the number on the piece of paper in my hand and listened as it rang.

Ring. Ring. Ring. Ring.

โ€œHello?โ€ The sound of her thick Dublin accent was momentarily foreign to my ears. After all, it had been a while since I had heard her.

โ€œEdel?โ€ I cleared my throat. โ€œItโ€™s ah, itโ€™s Joey Lynch.โ€

โ€œJoey!โ€ she squealed โ€“ actually fucking squealed โ€“ down the line. โ€œOh love, itโ€™s so good to hear your voice. How are you? Are you well? Are you eating? Have they been treating you kindly? Howโ€™s the detox going? Now, donโ€™t you worry about a thing down here. The boys and Shannon are in safe hands. How are you fixed for underpants, pet? Do you have enough of them? And socks? I sent up more tracksuits, but it you need more, I can โ€”โ€

โ€œIโ€™m grand,โ€ I quickly said, preventing her from continuing her ramble. โ€œIโ€™m ah, Iโ€™m better than grand, actually.โ€

โ€œAh, love, thatโ€™s the best news Iโ€™ve heard all year.โ€ Her tone was laced with affection and emotion. โ€œJohn and I never doubted you for a second.โ€

Her response momentarily took me aback, and I had to compose myself before I could speak. โ€œI just, ah, I finally earned phone privileges, and I, ah, I wanted to call to check in.โ€

โ€œWell, Iโ€™m delighted to hear your voice,โ€ she replied. โ€œYou sound so well in yourself, pet.โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€ Feeling like a tool, I leaned against the phone attached to the wall of the day room and clenched my eyes shut, second guessing myself throughout the entire conversation. โ€œIโ€™m a lot more clear-headed these days.โ€

โ€œWell, John and I have a big surprise for you when you get home next week.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s actually what I wanted to talk to you about.โ€

โ€œJoey.โ€ Her voice was laced with concern now. โ€œYouโ€™re coming to live with us, and thatโ€™s final. I donโ€™t want to hear a word of protest, and if you even think about going out on your own, I should warn you now that I have the nose of a bloodhound. You need only ask Johnny and Gerard. Iย willย sniff you out and bring you home.โ€

โ€œNo, thatโ€™s not what Iโ€™mโ€ฆโ€ I paused, pinching the bridge of my nose as I tried to find the right words. โ€œI donโ€™t have any plans to go out on my own anytime soon.โ€ Not that I could even if I wanted to. โ€œIโ€™m thankful for the roof over my head that youโ€™re offering,โ€ I added, chewing on my lip. โ€œI donโ€™t want to be separated from them.โ€ The kids.

โ€œYouโ€™ll never have to be,โ€ she reassured me. โ€œOnce youโ€™re home, love, youโ€™ll stay home. With your family.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s the issue.โ€ I bit down on my knuckle as a surge of anger welled up inside me. โ€œDarren went behind my back and talked to my team.โ€

โ€œDarren?โ€ I could hear the surprise in her voice. โ€œWhat did he say to them, love?โ€

โ€œHe discussed my treatment plan with them. Apparently, heโ€™s listed as my next of kinโ€”by the way, can you get that changed for me? Itโ€™s supposed to be Aoife.โ€

โ€œOf course, I can. That makes sense.โ€

โ€œThanks. Anyway, they were talking, and now they want me to stay on in rehab.โ€

She was silent for a moment before asking, โ€œAnd what do you think, Joey, love?โ€

โ€œHonestly?โ€

โ€œAlways.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m ready to go home now, but the fact that the doctor is agreeing with Darren has me second-guessing myself.โ€

โ€œIn what way?โ€

โ€œShe hasnโ€™t steered me wrong yet.โ€ I anxiously chewed on my nails. โ€œWhat if sheโ€™s right? What if Iโ€™m wrong? What if I screw this up?โ€

โ€œHow long are they asking you to stay?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know, Edel,โ€ I forced myself to admit. โ€œBut I canโ€™t do it. I canโ€™t stay any longer than I already have. I canโ€™t do that to Aoife. Not after everything Iโ€™ve put her through.โ€

โ€œIs there room to negotiate?โ€ she suggested. โ€œMaybe stay for another two weeks? But if you feel ready to come home on the 22nd like we originally planned, then youโ€™re ready. You have great instincts, love. Donโ€™t let anyone shake your confidence.โ€

โ€œI think the doctors expected Darren to vouch for me when he visited, and when he didnโ€™t, it raised some red flags for them.โ€

โ€œCan I help in any way?โ€ she offered. โ€œI would never overstep in your personal life, Joey, love. Youโ€™re a brilliant, capable young man, and I respect that youโ€™re not a child. Thatโ€™s not the kind of relationship I want us to have. But if you need me to step in on your behalf, Iโ€™m here and ready to fight for you.โ€

โ€œYou could vouch for me?โ€ I said, exhaling a shaky breath before admitting, โ€œBecause I could really use your help.โ€
