AOIFE

THE SMELL WASย the first thing that hit me when I jumped out of Dadโ€™s van at the bottom of the road and ran towards the crowds gathering on the street outside 95 Elkโ€™s Terrace.

Huge plumes of black smoke continued to rise into the sky as the fire brigade battled to extinguish the blaze that was devouring my boyfriendโ€™s house.

โ€œAoife!โ€ Casey called out. โ€œOh my god, Aoif!โ€ Slipping around a group of pajama clad women, she ran straight for me. โ€œYou have no idea how good it is to see you.โ€ Breathless and panting, she threw her arms around me when she reached me. โ€œI heard the sirens, and then I saw all the flames, and everyone started coming out of their houses. Jesus, I tried to call you, but your phoneโ€™s going straight to voicemail. I was terrified you might be in there. When I saw Joey losing his shitโ€”โ€

โ€œYou saw him?โ€ I demanded, chest heaving, as I struggled to make sense of what I was seeing. โ€œWhen? Where? Is he okay? Was heโ€””

โ€œYeah, I saw him. Heโ€™s okay โ€“ well, clearly, he wasnโ€™t okay. I mean, he was understandably losing his shit, trying to go back into the house, but Johnny Kavanagh showed up and hauled him away.โ€

And that was all it took.

Heโ€™s okay.

Two words.

โ€œHeโ€™s okay?โ€ Sobbing uncontrollably as a tsunami of relief washed over me, I felt my legs give out beneath me. โ€œJoeโ€™s okay?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re okay, too,โ€ Dad soothed, catching me before I hit the ground. โ€œYouโ€™re okay, too, pet.โ€ Turning to Casey, he asked, โ€œDid everyone get out?โ€

โ€œAll the kids got out,โ€ I heard her tell him. โ€œFrom what Iโ€™ve been hearing from the neighbors, Joe and all the kids have been taken to Shannonโ€™s boyfriendโ€™s house. Itโ€™s just his mother and father. Theyโ€™re the only ones who burnedโ€”โ€

โ€œRight, thatโ€™s enough,โ€ Dad interrupted, hooking an arm around me and pulling me to his chest. โ€œYouโ€™re coming home with me right now. Casey, pet, are you coming? I think Aoife could use her little sidekick tonight.โ€

โ€œFor sure, Daddy-T, Iโ€™m coming.โ€

โ€œWhat? No, no, no!โ€ Wide-eyed and horrified, I spun around to gape at me father. โ€œDad, no. I canโ€™t go home. I have to go to him. Heโ€™sโ€”โ€

โ€œNo.โ€ Cutting me off, my father wrapped a strong arm around my shoulders and led me back to the van. โ€œYouโ€™re not. Youโ€™re coming home with me and Casey, and youโ€™re going to stay home. Tomorrowโ€™s another day. You can go and see him then. I promise you faithfully I will take you to the Kavanaghโ€™s house myself, but right now, I need you to come home and rest.โ€

โ€œDad, you donโ€™t understandโ€”โ€

โ€œNo,ย youย donโ€™t understand, Aoife,โ€ he snapped, helping me into the passenger side of the van, and then waiting for Casey to climb in beside me

before slamming the door shut and rounding the driverโ€™s side. โ€œYouโ€™re pregnant, for Christโ€™s sake,โ€ he continued, climbing in alongside us and starting the engine. โ€œThis isnโ€™t good for you. I know you love the boy, and my heart is breaking for him, too. Iโ€™ve indulged you all night. Iโ€™ve done everything I can to help and support you, but Iโ€™m putting my foot down now. This isnโ€™t good for the baby, and I think itโ€™s high time you start putting theย babyย first.โ€
