Chapter no 10 -โ€Œ DONโ€™ T SAY I T I F YOU DONโ€™ T MEAN I T

Redeeming 6 (Boys of Tommen, #4)

AOIFE

โ€œITโ€™Sย time to pick your poison, Joey Lynch.โ€ Trembling, I stood in front of the only boy I had ever loved, with an ultimatum hanging heavily in the air between us.

What I said was true.

I genuinely couldnโ€™t live another day feeling like this. I needed to know where I stood with him.

I couldnโ€™t cope with the unknown.

Itย terrifiedย me.

โ€œThereโ€™s no decision to make,โ€ he blew my mind by saying, green eyes blazing with heat. โ€œYou already know itโ€™s you.โ€

His response caused a shiver of delight to roll through my body, but my heart was still wary.

โ€œNo, Iย donโ€™t,โ€ I choked out, heart racing violently.ย Because if I did, I wouldnโ€™t be standing here, putting my heart and pride on the line.ย โ€œIย donโ€™tย know, Joey.โ€

โ€œThen let me be very clear about it,โ€ he replied, reaching up to cup the side of my face. โ€œItโ€™s you, Molloy.โ€ He tipped my chin up, forcing me to look

at him. โ€œItโ€™s you.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t say it if you donโ€™t mean it.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s you,โ€ he repeated gruffly, fingers tightening on my waist. โ€œI pick you. Every single time.โ€

โ€œI mean it,โ€ I warned, shaking my head. โ€œIโ€™m a big girl and I knew what I was getting myself into when I kissed you that day outside your house. You have this warped notion that you need to shield me from your life whenย nothingย about your life has come as a surprise to me. I walked into this relationship with my eyes wide open, and guess what; my eyes are still open, and I still want in.โ€

โ€œI still want in, too,โ€ he replied gruffly. โ€œI justโ€ฆโ€ He blew out a ragged breath. โ€œYou mean the world to me,โ€ he confessed, voice pained. โ€œI know I have a fucked-up way of expressing myself, and I donโ€™t show it like I should. But itโ€™s true. Iย donโ€™tย want to do anything to hurt you, yet most of the time, thatโ€™s exactly what I end up doing.โ€

His words, his touch, his scent, it was all too much in the moment. โ€œJoe.โ€ “I’ll love you the right way this time,” he whispered, and his breath

fanned my cheek. “If you show me how.โ€

My hand shot out of its own accord, knotting in the front of his shirt and pulling him closer when I needed to push him away. โ€œJoe.โ€

โ€œWhat I did at Christmas? How far I went? It scared theย shitย out of me, and all I could think about was if I didnโ€™t get you away from me, I would end up destroying my world, because thatโ€™s what you are to me, Aoif. Youโ€™re my whole goddamn world wrapped up in one girl. So, yeah, maybe Iโ€™ve gone about it entirely the wrong way, but all Iโ€™ve ever tried to do is protect you.โ€

โ€œSee, thatโ€™s a huge part of our problem right there, Joe, because Iโ€™ve never needed your protection,โ€ I croaked out. โ€œIโ€™m not your mother or your sister. Iโ€™m not another girl who needs something from you. Iโ€™m the girl who wholeheartedlyย wantsย you. Iโ€™m the girl who wholeheartedlyย lovesย you. The hurler. The mechanic. The boy. The protector. The asshole. The lover. The addict.โ€ Sniffling, I added, โ€œAll of your versions. All of your shapes and colors. I accept them all. So, I donโ€™t care how fucked up in the head you get, or how bad of an idea you decide you are for me. If you canโ€™t be with me, warts and all, then walk away now, because I wonโ€™t go through this again with you.โ€

โ€œI hear you, Molloy,โ€ he replied, tone strained, as he rested both hands on my waist.

โ€œDo you?โ€ I implored him with my eyes to be honest. โ€œDo you really hear me, Joe?โ€

He nodded slowly. โ€œI hear you, baby.โ€

โ€œGood.โ€ Trembling, I clenched my eyes shut, losing the battle with both my emotions and my pride, as I dropped my forehead to rest against his chest. โ€œBecause you canโ€™t take it back this time, Joe. Do you hear me? You donโ€™t get to walk away again for any other reason than you donโ€™t want to be with me, and trust that I will do the same.โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€ His hands slid from my waist to my shoulders, and then moved to cup my face, hands tangling in my hair, evoking a shiver of pleasure from my body that only he could. โ€œI can do that.โ€

Illicit sensations and feelings roared to the surface when he stroked his nose against mine, nuzzling me with the kind of affection I knew he held only for me. It was empowering and terrifying all in one breath. โ€œI love you.โ€

He said it so easily now that it sounded foreign to my ears. A shaky breath escaped my parted lips.

โ€œI love you,โ€ he repeated slowly, leaning in to give me an innocent,

sweet, soul-destroying kiss.

โ€œNo more walls, Joe.โ€ My arms came around his waist, fingers digging into the fabric of his shirt, as I clung to him like a prayer. โ€œNo more secrets and coverups, okay? Weโ€™re way past those. Because Iโ€™ve never been your enemy,โ€ I squeezed out. โ€œIโ€™ve always been your teammate.โ€

He stilled for a moment before releasing a heavy sigh. โ€œThen in the spirit of full disclosure, I should probably tell you that I didnโ€™t just come here because I was invited.โ€

โ€œOkayโ€ฆโ€ I narrowed my eyes, instantly suspicious. โ€œWhat did you do?โ€

Shaking his head, he caught ahold of my hand and led me outside to a quiet part of the garden. โ€œDonโ€™t flip out.โ€

I folded my hands across my chest and glared up at him. โ€œDonโ€™t give me a reason to flip out and I wonโ€™t.โ€

He scrunched his nose up before muttering, โ€œI sold Biggs an eighth.โ€ โ€œOfย joy?โ€

He squirmed in discomfort. โ€œOf weed.โ€

โ€œJesus, Joey!โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t go to Shane,โ€ he was quick to offer up. โ€œI havenโ€™t gone near him since that night.โ€

โ€œThen whereโ€™d you get it?โ€ I demanded. โ€œYour personal stash?โ€ He offered me a sheepish shrug.

โ€œJesus.โ€ I shook my head. โ€œWhat am I saying?ย Of courseย you have a personal stash.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s all I have, I swear.โ€ โ€œDonโ€™t lie to meโ€”โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not,โ€ he interrupted. โ€œThatโ€™s all I had. Thatโ€™s it, Molloy. I swear.โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€ โ€œWhy what?โ€

โ€œWhyโ€™d you do something as incredibly stupid as selling weed to a bunch of private school kids?โ€

He eyed me warily, but didnโ€™t answer. โ€œWhy?โ€ I repeated, not backing down. โ€œBecause they asked me to?โ€

I gave him a look that saidย wrong answer.

He released a frustrated growl and tried again. โ€œBecause I needed the money.โ€

Now we were getting somewhere. โ€œFor?โ€ โ€œMy family.โ€

โ€œBecause?โ€

He looked up to the sky and shook his head before saying, โ€œBecause my old man blew every penny my mother had, and when he was finished spending her money, she handed him mine.โ€

โ€œAre you serious?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s my own fault,โ€ he replied in a resigned tone. โ€œI always give her half of my wages at the end of the week to help with the bills, and a few extra

quid at Christmas to get what she needs for the kids.โ€ Frowning, he added, โ€œYour father gave me an extra couple of hundred in my wage packet for Christmas this year, and I was either too stupid or too high to consider the repercussions when I handed it over to her.โ€

โ€œYou gave her all of your money?โ€

โ€œEvery cent,โ€ he admitted before quickly backpedaling with a frown. โ€œI got those slouch boots you wanted for Christmas first. Theyโ€™re under my bed.โ€

My heart squeezed in my chest. โ€œJoe.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve been staying out of trouble, Molloy, really, I have,โ€ he urged. โ€œHughie Biggs approachedย me. He and his friends were looking for a smoke and throwing around more cash than sense.โ€ He shrugged before adding, โ€œI took the opportunity with both hands, and I wonโ€™t apologize for it. I needed that cash for my sister and the boys. For the baby. I couldnโ€™t see Seany go without.โ€ He shook his head, eyes awfully full of regret for a guy who refused to apologize. โ€œIโ€™m not a dealer, Molloy โ€“ you know Iโ€™m not. But I couldnโ€™t turn my nose up at a one-time offer like that. I couldnโ€™t afford to.โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€ Curiosity got the better of me and I asked, โ€œHow much did they offer you?โ€

โ€œTwo hundred euro for a bag that cost me sixty.โ€

โ€œAre you serious?โ€ My mouth fell open. โ€œDo you know how many hours I have to work at the pub to make that kind of money?โ€

โ€œI know.โ€ He nodded, wide-eyed. โ€œItโ€™s the same for me at the garage.

Thatโ€™s exactly what I thought. See? This is why I love you. You get it.โ€

โ€œYeah, I get it, but thatโ€™s not the point,โ€ I hurried to add, giving him a warning stare. โ€œThat shit stops.โ€ Narrowing my eyes, I said, โ€œNever again, do you hear me? If you so much as considerโ€”โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t worry,โ€ he was quick to interject. โ€œIโ€™ve made the mistake of handing over my wages to a bum for the last time.โ€

That was a lie.

The minute his next wage packet landed in his hands, Joey would go right ahead and hand it over to her again.

It was one of the reasons I loved him so much. And a huge reason why I despised his mother.

โ€œSo, Iโ€™m sort of freezing out here,โ€ I told him, gesturing around us.

โ€œShit, yeah,โ€ he muttered, reaching for the hem of his hoodie, only to realize that this was one of the rare occasions in which he wasnโ€™t wearing one. โ€œDo you have a coat?โ€ he asked, pulling me in close and splaying his big hand across my bare back.

โ€œNo, but I donโ€™t need one,โ€ I replied, just about done with all of the heavy. โ€œBecause I have an unlimited supply of free alcohol to warm my belly, and this asshole guy Iโ€™m sort of in love with to warm everywhere else.โ€

He smirked. โ€œIs that so?โ€

โ€œUh-huh. Come on, Tony Soprano.โ€ Wrapping my arm around his waist, I slid my hand into his back pocket leaned in to his warm side. โ€œThis time, you can look after me.โ€
