AOIFE
โITโSย time to pick your poison, Joey Lynch.โ Trembling, I stood in front of the only boy I had ever loved, with an ultimatum hanging heavily in the air between us.
What I said was true.
I genuinely couldnโt live another day feeling like this. I needed to know where I stood with him.
I couldnโt cope with the unknown.
Itย terrifiedย me.
โThereโs no decision to make,โ he blew my mind by saying, green eyes blazing with heat. โYou already know itโs you.โ
His response caused a shiver of delight to roll through my body, but my heart was still wary.
โNo, Iย donโt,โ I choked out, heart racing violently.ย Because if I did, I wouldnโt be standing here, putting my heart and pride on the line.ย โIย donโtย know, Joey.โ
โThen let me be very clear about it,โ he replied, reaching up to cup the side of my face. โItโs you, Molloy.โ He tipped my chin up, forcing me to look
at him. โItโs you.โ
โDonโt say it if you donโt mean it.โ
โItโs you,โ he repeated gruffly, fingers tightening on my waist. โI pick you. Every single time.โ
โI mean it,โ I warned, shaking my head. โIโm a big girl and I knew what I was getting myself into when I kissed you that day outside your house. You have this warped notion that you need to shield me from your life whenย nothingย about your life has come as a surprise to me. I walked into this relationship with my eyes wide open, and guess what; my eyes are still open, and I still want in.โ
โI still want in, too,โ he replied gruffly. โI justโฆโ He blew out a ragged breath. โYou mean the world to me,โ he confessed, voice pained. โI know I have a fucked-up way of expressing myself, and I donโt show it like I should. But itโs true. Iย donโtย want to do anything to hurt you, yet most of the time, thatโs exactly what I end up doing.โ
His words, his touch, his scent, it was all too much in the moment. โJoe.โ “I’ll love you the right way this time,” he whispered, and his breath
fanned my cheek. “If you show me how.โ
My hand shot out of its own accord, knotting in the front of his shirt and pulling him closer when I needed to push him away. โJoe.โ
โWhat I did at Christmas? How far I went? It scared theย shitย out of me, and all I could think about was if I didnโt get you away from me, I would end up destroying my world, because thatโs what you are to me, Aoif. Youโre my whole goddamn world wrapped up in one girl. So, yeah, maybe Iโve gone about it entirely the wrong way, but all Iโve ever tried to do is protect you.โ
โSee, thatโs a huge part of our problem right there, Joe, because Iโve never needed your protection,โ I croaked out. โIโm not your mother or your sister. Iโm not another girl who needs something from you. Iโm the girl who wholeheartedlyย wantsย you. Iโm the girl who wholeheartedlyย lovesย you. The hurler. The mechanic. The boy. The protector. The asshole. The lover. The addict.โ Sniffling, I added, โAll of your versions. All of your shapes and colors. I accept them all. So, I donโt care how fucked up in the head you get, or how bad of an idea you decide you are for me. If you canโt be with me, warts and all, then walk away now, because I wonโt go through this again with you.โ
โI hear you, Molloy,โ he replied, tone strained, as he rested both hands on my waist.
โDo you?โ I implored him with my eyes to be honest. โDo you really hear me, Joe?โ
He nodded slowly. โI hear you, baby.โ
โGood.โ Trembling, I clenched my eyes shut, losing the battle with both my emotions and my pride, as I dropped my forehead to rest against his chest. โBecause you canโt take it back this time, Joe. Do you hear me? You donโt get to walk away again for any other reason than you donโt want to be with me, and trust that I will do the same.โ
โOkay.โ His hands slid from my waist to my shoulders, and then moved to cup my face, hands tangling in my hair, evoking a shiver of pleasure from my body that only he could. โI can do that.โ
Illicit sensations and feelings roared to the surface when he stroked his nose against mine, nuzzling me with the kind of affection I knew he held only for me. It was empowering and terrifying all in one breath. โI love you.โ
He said it so easily now that it sounded foreign to my ears. A shaky breath escaped my parted lips.
โI love you,โ he repeated slowly, leaning in to give me an innocent,
sweet, soul-destroying kiss.
โNo more walls, Joe.โ My arms came around his waist, fingers digging into the fabric of his shirt, as I clung to him like a prayer. โNo more secrets and coverups, okay? Weโre way past those. Because Iโve never been your enemy,โ I squeezed out. โIโve always been your teammate.โ
He stilled for a moment before releasing a heavy sigh. โThen in the spirit of full disclosure, I should probably tell you that I didnโt just come here because I was invited.โ
โOkayโฆโ I narrowed my eyes, instantly suspicious. โWhat did you do?โ
Shaking his head, he caught ahold of my hand and led me outside to a quiet part of the garden. โDonโt flip out.โ
I folded my hands across my chest and glared up at him. โDonโt give me a reason to flip out and I wonโt.โ
He scrunched his nose up before muttering, โI sold Biggs an eighth.โ โOfย joy?โ
He squirmed in discomfort. โOf weed.โ
โJesus, Joey!โ
โI didnโt go to Shane,โ he was quick to offer up. โI havenโt gone near him since that night.โ
โThen whereโd you get it?โ I demanded. โYour personal stash?โ He offered me a sheepish shrug.
โJesus.โ I shook my head. โWhat am I saying?ย Of courseย you have a personal stash.โ
โThatโs all I have, I swear.โ โDonโt lie to meโโ
โIโm not,โ he interrupted. โThatโs all I had. Thatโs it, Molloy. I swear.โ
โWhy?โ โWhy what?โ
โWhyโd you do something as incredibly stupid as selling weed to a bunch of private school kids?โ
He eyed me warily, but didnโt answer. โWhy?โ I repeated, not backing down. โBecause they asked me to?โ
I gave him a look that saidย wrong answer.
He released a frustrated growl and tried again. โBecause I needed the money.โ
Now we were getting somewhere. โFor?โ โMy family.โ
โBecause?โ
He looked up to the sky and shook his head before saying, โBecause my old man blew every penny my mother had, and when he was finished spending her money, she handed him mine.โ
โAre you serious?โ
โItโs my own fault,โ he replied in a resigned tone. โI always give her half of my wages at the end of the week to help with the bills, and a few extra
quid at Christmas to get what she needs for the kids.โ Frowning, he added, โYour father gave me an extra couple of hundred in my wage packet for Christmas this year, and I was either too stupid or too high to consider the repercussions when I handed it over to her.โ
โYou gave her all of your money?โ
โEvery cent,โ he admitted before quickly backpedaling with a frown. โI got those slouch boots you wanted for Christmas first. Theyโre under my bed.โ
My heart squeezed in my chest. โJoe.โ
โIโve been staying out of trouble, Molloy, really, I have,โ he urged. โHughie Biggs approachedย me. He and his friends were looking for a smoke and throwing around more cash than sense.โ He shrugged before adding, โI took the opportunity with both hands, and I wonโt apologize for it. I needed that cash for my sister and the boys. For the baby. I couldnโt see Seany go without.โ He shook his head, eyes awfully full of regret for a guy who refused to apologize. โIโm not a dealer, Molloy โ you know Iโm not. But I couldnโt turn my nose up at a one-time offer like that. I couldnโt afford to.โ
โWhy?โ Curiosity got the better of me and I asked, โHow much did they offer you?โ
โTwo hundred euro for a bag that cost me sixty.โ
โAre you serious?โ My mouth fell open. โDo you know how many hours I have to work at the pub to make that kind of money?โ
โI know.โ He nodded, wide-eyed. โItโs the same for me at the garage.
Thatโs exactly what I thought. See? This is why I love you. You get it.โ
โYeah, I get it, but thatโs not the point,โ I hurried to add, giving him a warning stare. โThat shit stops.โ Narrowing my eyes, I said, โNever again, do you hear me? If you so much as considerโโ
โDonโt worry,โ he was quick to interject. โIโve made the mistake of handing over my wages to a bum for the last time.โ
That was a lie.
The minute his next wage packet landed in his hands, Joey would go right ahead and hand it over to her again.
It was one of the reasons I loved him so much. And a huge reason why I despised his mother.
โSo, Iโm sort of freezing out here,โ I told him, gesturing around us.
โShit, yeah,โ he muttered, reaching for the hem of his hoodie, only to realize that this was one of the rare occasions in which he wasnโt wearing one. โDo you have a coat?โ he asked, pulling me in close and splaying his big hand across my bare back.
โNo, but I donโt need one,โ I replied, just about done with all of the heavy. โBecause I have an unlimited supply of free alcohol to warm my belly, and this asshole guy Iโm sort of in love with to warm everywhere else.โ
He smirked. โIs that so?โ
โUh-huh. Come on, Tony Soprano.โ Wrapping my arm around his waist, I slid my hand into his back pocket leaned in to his warm side. โThis time, you can look after me.โ
