Chapter no 47 – COLLIDING

Phantasma (Wicked Games, #1)

NIGHT NINE OF PHANTASMA

โ€œWe should come up with a team name,โ€ Genevieve suggested as they made it up to the sixth flight of the manor . They, being Ophelia, Genevieve, and a very amused Blackwell.

For the past three hours, theyโ€™d been going through as many floors and rooms of Phantasma as possible. Theyโ€™d yet to run into any other contestants that might be left, and it was making Ophelia anxious. She wanted to size up her opponents before the next trial.

Genevieve, on the other hand, didnโ€™t seem to have a care in the world other than grilling Blackwell about any and everything that popped into her mind.

Whatโ€™s it like being a ghost?

Do you ever worry your clothes are going to go out of style?

Or that youโ€™re egregiously behind on the latest technology?

Have you ever even seen a car?

How many people have you watched die in here?

How long is yourโ โ€”

Ophelia hadnโ€™t known where that last question was going, but she cut it off before Genevieve could even finish it. To Blackwellโ€™s credit, he took every question in stride. Even seemed to be enjoying Genevieveโ€™s antics as they wandered through the mansion. It made something deep within her ache. She ignored it, funneling all of her focus into their hunt.

All the corridors and hallways in the other wings lookedย nearly identical to the one Ophelia had been trapped in all this time. Complete with elaborate dining rooms, libraries, and random broom closets. It didnโ€™t take long for them to realize that theyย wereย the same rooms, somehow just operating on different linear planes, all layered on top of the other in different pockets of the universe. It was enough to make Opheliaโ€™s head spin, quite frankly, but it made more sense why, of all the wings in the manor, Ophelia found her fatherโ€™s name carved into a place within hers. Which technically meant if other contestants had figured that out, they couldโ€™ve left messages for other groups to see. A detail that made Ophelia irate after all the worrying sheโ€™d done about Genevieveโ€™s whereabouts.

โ€œI am open to team name suggestions,โ€ Blackwell humored Genevieve, his words cutting through Opheliaโ€™s thoughts and bringing her back into their ridiculous conversation.

โ€œLetโ€™s see, what do we all have in commonโ€ฆโ€ Genevieve trailed off, flitting down the hall ahead of them, to a new room. โ€œWeโ€™re all very attractive.โ€

Blackwellโ€™s grin grew. โ€œThatย isย true.โ€

Ophelia shot her sister a disparaging look. โ€œDonโ€™t inflate his ego any more than it already is, Iโ€™m begging you.โ€

โ€œWhich she does not like to do,โ€ Blackwell quipped. โ€œShe much prefers me in that position instead.โ€

Ophelia elbowed him in the ribs as her cheeks flamed. He tilted his head back and laughed, and she had to fight the pain welling up in her chest at the sight. Because there they were, she and Genevieve reunited, Blackwell laughing with abandon, and all she could think about was how in two days sheโ€™d never get to have this experience again.

โ€œWhat aboutโ€”โ€ Genevieve began as if neither of them had spoken, but was suddenly interrupted when something small and ghostly popped in by her feet. โ€œOh! Fluffy!ย Youโ€™re back.โ€

โ€œFluffy?โ€ Ophelia and Blackwell questioned in sync.

Genevieve looked back at them. โ€œWhat else was I supposed to call him?โ€

โ€œHis name is Poe.โ€ Blackwell smiled as he went over and scooped the cat up.

โ€œNo fair, you can pet him,โ€ Genevieve pouted.

โ€œDonโ€™t worry, youโ€™re not missing much,โ€ Blackwell assured. โ€œHeโ€™s a dreadful scoundrel most of the time.โ€

Poe launched himself out of Blackwellโ€™s embrace then, as if insulted.

Ophelia cleared her throat. โ€œAlright, I think we need to call it a night. Weโ€™ve walked up and down at least ten flights of stairs and have searched every room with no luck. I amย exhausted.โ€

Genevieve snorted. โ€œIโ€™m sure you are after all that energy the two of you probably burned earlier.โ€

Opheliaโ€™s face heated for the millionth time in the last hour, but Blackwell was grinning like a fiend.

He stepped up next to Ophelia, reaching over to brush a piece of hair out of her face and tuck it behind her ear as he told her, โ€œI enjoy your sister immensely.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m going to bed,โ€ Ophelia muttered as she playfully swatted his hand away and turned to stomp from the room. โ€œI should have known the two of you would be an unbearable pair.โ€

โ€œWait!โ€ Genevieve rushed past Blackwell to keep up with Ophelia. โ€œWeโ€™re going to share a room from now on, right?โ€

Ophelia looked back over her shoulder at Blackwell, and they shared a loaded look.

It was him who said, โ€œThatโ€™s probably the best idea.โ€

Of course, Ophelia didnโ€™t want to split up from Genevieve, but there was also a part of her, a very selfish part, that was devastated that the last time they were intimate together wasย theย lastย time.

โ€œIโ€™ll go get my things and meet you back at your room, Ophie,โ€ Genevieve said.

โ€œDo you want us to go with you?โ€ Ophelia offered, unsure if she wanted her sister to split up with them, but Genevieve waved off her concern.

โ€œIโ€™ll be fine!โ€ she assured as she rushed off.

Blackwell transported Ophelia back to her room a few seconds later.

โ€œThis is strange,โ€ Ophelia told him. โ€œLike two worlds colliding.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m glad you found her. Or rather, that she found us.โ€ Blackwell smiled, his arms circling her waist to bring her body closer to his. โ€œThough, I wish she had found us at least five minutes laterโ€ฆโ€

Ophelia hummed in agreement and let him press a sweet, lingering kiss to her lips.

โ€œI wish you could stay,โ€ she whispered.

โ€œMe too.โ€ He sighed. โ€œBut maybe this will be easier.โ€

She knew he was probably right, but it didnโ€™t stop the disappointment. He kissed her one last time before bidding her good night and vanishing, leaving her to change for bed and crawl beneath the covers while she waited for her sister.

Ophelia woke the next day with Genevieveโ€™s elbow in her back and all of her covers stolen to the other side of the bed.

โ€œI did not missย this,โ€ she muttered before getting up and stretching.

She didnโ€™t remember Genevieve returning the night beforeโ€”she must have fallen asleepโ€”but now the entire floor was covered inย things. One thing about Genevieve was that she was incapable of having a tidy room. Various articles of clothing and shoes and perfume bottles spilled from her twoย trunks, and Ophelia was in disbelief at how much her sister was able to fit in just two bags.

There was a movement from the bed as Genevieve yawned and stretched.

โ€œYou brought more than one pair of shoes, Vivi?โ€ Ophelia admonished. โ€œYou broughtย perfume?โ€

โ€œYou never know who you might meet,โ€ Genevieve grumbled at being judged so early in the morning. โ€œBesides, I didnโ€™t bring any of the expensive ones.โ€

โ€œYou are unbelievable.โ€ Ophelia shook her head. โ€œGet dressed before I summon Blackwell. I want to get as much searching in as we can before tonight.โ€

Genevieve hauled herself out of bed, and though it was deep into the afternoon because of the inverted sleeping schedule Phantasma had forced them all into, Genevieve still proved that she could never be a morning person. When they were both finally dressed, Ophelia called for Blackwell. It took several times before he finally heard her, which she had to quickly explain to Genevieve.

โ€œSee, this is why I hate magic,โ€ Genevieve muttered as they left Opheliaโ€™s room and headed down the corridor. โ€œToo many fucking rules.โ€

Blackwell popped in front of them a second later, a grave look on his face.

โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong?โ€ Ophelia asked.

โ€œA few of the last contestants from the other groups are trying to hunt down people to kill before the next level,โ€ he informed them. โ€œOnly one person can attempt level nine, so this is usually about the time this sort of thing starts to happen.โ€

Genevieve and Ophelia exchanged a look, and Ophelia knew what she needed toย say next.

โ€œViviโ€ฆโ€

โ€œNo.โ€ Genevieve shook her head vigorously. โ€œIโ€™m not leaving after all of this.โ€

โ€œBut if only one of us can get to level nine, why risk any more trials?โ€ Ophelia reasoned.

โ€œThen Iโ€™ll forfeit before level nine,โ€ Genevieve countered. โ€œBut Iโ€™mย notย leaving you before.โ€

โ€œWell, if there were any time to forfeit, it would be before level eight,โ€ Blackwell inserted. โ€œItโ€™s definitely the one with the most to lose sinceโ โ€”โ€

โ€œOh, Iโ€™m sure theyโ€™d be fine,โ€ a deep, sinister voice interrupted, and Ophelia immediately tensed.

Sinclair appeared with a smug smile on his face, and Blackwell stiffened with barely concealed rage. This was not going to be good.

โ€œItโ€™sย you!โ€ Genevieve exclaimed before swinging her gaze to Ophelia. โ€œHeโ€™s the one who told me where to find you, Ophie.โ€

โ€œOh,ย Ophieย and I go way back, I assure you,โ€ Sinclair said. โ€œIn fact, the last time we saw each other, my fingers were in herโ โ€”โ€

โ€œFinish that sentence and Iโ€™ll fucking kill you,โ€ Blackwell threatened.

Ophelia was ashamed that all she could think of in this moment was that Blackwell had been right beforeโ€”jealousyย wasย a s*xy color.

Genevieve, now realizing something much deeper was going on between the three of them, glanced around in shock.

Leaning into Ophelia with a proud grin, she whispered, โ€œPleaseย tell me theyโ€™re fighting over you.โ€

Ophelia threw a severe look at Genevieve that only made her sisterโ€™s grin grow wider.

Sinclair tilted his head. โ€œBe careful, Blackwell.ย One might think your jealousy is dangerously linked to something very much forbidden.โ€

โ€œWhat happened between the three of you, Ophie?โ€ Genevieve whispered conspiratorially.

โ€œDidnโ€™t your sister dearest tell you?โ€ Sinclair asked innocently. โ€œBlackwell isnโ€™t the only one around here she kissed.โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s the only one Iย enjoyedย kissing,โ€ Ophelia retorted, and Blackwellโ€™s grin turned wicked.

โ€œMeanwhile, no one has offered to kiss me once this entire competition,โ€ Genevieve pouted.

โ€œI can change that,โ€ Sinclair offered.

โ€œNo,โ€ Blackwell and Ophelia exclaimed at the same time.

โ€œI only came to make sure our dearest Grimm sisters found each other,โ€ Sinclair pressed on. โ€œIt would be such a shame if they were torn apart again just as they were reunited, donโ€™t you think, Blackwell?โ€

Ophelia narrowed her eyes at the Devil. โ€œWhatโ€™s your angle?โ€

Sinclair laughed. โ€œI suppose youโ€™ll have to figure that out for yourself.โ€

With that, he disappeared.

โ€œIโ€™ve got to admit, heโ€™s creepy, but in that irresistibly hot way, you know?โ€ Genevieve said.

โ€œI canโ€™t say that I do,โ€ Blackwell replied flatly.

โ€œHe and Blackwell are mortal enemies,โ€ Ophelia chimed in.

โ€œAnd you kissed both of them?โ€ Genevieve laughed. โ€œI never took you for the drama queen type, Ophie. Though, I kind of get itโ€”the whole jealousy thing is even hotter than the men themselves. Honestly, Iโ€™ve never been prouder.โ€

โ€œIf Sinclair wants you two to stay together, Iโ€™m willing to bet thatโ€™s a strong indication itโ€™s not a good idea,โ€ Blackwell added dryly.

โ€œUgh. Just because one cryptic Devil says something doesnโ€™t mean I should bow out,โ€ Ophelia scoffed.

โ€œHeโ€™s right, though,โ€ she continued, turning serious. โ€œSinclair didnโ€™t lead you to me with the best intentions, I promise. Heโ€™s got his own agenda. And heโ€™s got a personal grudge against Blackwell.โ€

Genevieve shook her head. โ€œHow could I leave you, Ophie? This whole mission was supposed to be mine, not yours.โ€

โ€œYou got me this far,โ€ Ophelia said, squeezing her sisterโ€™s hand. โ€œI couldnโ€™t have done any of this without you. You came all this way because you had toโ€”because I couldnโ€™t give up the idea of taking over Grimm Manor and Motherโ€™s business. Butโ€ฆโ€

Something in Genevieveโ€™s expression turned hopeful. โ€œBut what, Ophie?

Ophelia took a deep breath. โ€œThings have changed. Iโ€™ve changed. I donโ€™t want the same things anymore.โ€

โ€œThen what do you want?โ€ Genevieve pressed, reaching out to squeeze Opheliaโ€™s hand in encouragement.

It took everything in Ophelia to keep her eyes on her sisterโ€™s face and not look at Blackwell, despite the weight of his gaze burning into her from where he stood.

โ€œIโ€™m still making my mind up about that,โ€ Ophelia finally answered. โ€œBut what I know for sure is that your mission here is complete Genevieve. You led me here. And itโ€™s saved me from a future that would have drowned me. And I have Blackwell to protect me until I can reach the end. Why risk another level that you donโ€™t need to?โ€

Genevieve was quiet for a long moment, gaze searching for something in Opheliaโ€™s eyes. Whatever she was looking for, she mustย have found.

โ€œFine,โ€ Genevieve whispered. โ€œCan I at the very least stay with you until then?โ€

Opheliaโ€™s shoulders relaxed. She did it. Sheโ€™d found Genevieve and convinced her to leave. Everything was as it should be.

โ€œAlright, stay until dinner. And then we can say our farewells.โ€
