Chapter no 46 – MOTHERโ€™S DAUGHTER

Phantasma (Wicked Games, #1)

Genevieve pushed her way inside the door just as Blackwell clothed himself and Ophelia.

One look at their compromising position and Genevieve huffed. โ€œYouย wouldย follow me here and then end up having a more fun time than me.โ€

Ophelia scrambled off Blackwellโ€™s lap. Her sister was clad in a dress sheโ€™d brought from home: pink chiffon that hugged her voluptuous curves sweetly. Opheliaโ€™s brain struggled to compute that Genevieve was really here, right in front of her, after all this time.

โ€œOphie? Would you like to make introductions?โ€ Genevieve prompted sweetly.

โ€œVivi, this is Blackwell.โ€ Ophelia gestured to the Ghost who was watching them with intrigue. โ€œBlackwell, this is my sister. Genevieve Grimm.โ€

Genevieve held her hand out to him, and he bowed formally at the waist as he took it and pressed a chaste kiss to her knuckles.

Ophelia rolled her eyes. โ€œSuck-up.โ€

Blackwell grinned over at her as he straightened himself up.

โ€œTell me, Blackwell,โ€ Genevieve said in a saccharine tone. Warning bells immediately sounded off in Opheliaโ€™s head. โ€œWhat are your intentions with my sister? Besides fucking her stupid, I mean.โ€

Blackwell nearly choked at the bluntness of Genevieveโ€™sย words, but he quickly recovered with a laugh. โ€œI think I should leave you both to have a conversation.โ€

Opheliaโ€™s face dropped at his words, and she knew her sister had caught the disappointment immediately.

Blackwell leaned down to press a kiss to Opheliaโ€™s temple in reassurance. โ€œIโ€™m a call away. The two of you have a lot to catch up on and donโ€™t need me getting in the middle of it.โ€

With that, he disappeared.

Ophelia and Genevieve stood, staring at each other for what felt like an hour before Genevieve finally sighed and broke the silence.

โ€œYouย wouldย follow me here even though I said Iโ€™d take care of things,โ€ she carped.

Ophelia gawked in disbelief. โ€œOfย course, I was going to follow you! Youโ€™re my baby sister! What on earth were youย thinkingย entering a place like this? You hate anything even remotely related to the paranormal, and yet you comeย here?โ€

โ€œI was thinking that Iโ€™m perfectly capable of taking care of myself and wasnโ€™t going to sit by and watch you make yourself sick with worry about how we were going to get on without Momma.โ€ She took a deep breath. Then, โ€œAnd I donโ€™tย hateย the paranormal, Ophie. What I hated was having it forced into every aspect of our lives growing up.โ€

โ€œBecause making myself sick with worry for your well-being in this hellish place is much better?โ€ Ophelia scoffed, ignoring that last bit of Genevieveโ€™s speech. That was a lot more than they had time to unpack right this second.

โ€œI didnโ€™t think you would figure out where I was going,โ€ she muttered. Then, as if it just dawned on her, asked, โ€œHowย didย you know I came here?โ€

โ€œIโ€ฆย might have found your diary.โ€ Ophelia looked down at her hands with guilt.

โ€œYou read my diary?โ€ Genevieve half screeched. โ€œI am going toย killย you, Ophelia Grimm!โ€

Opheliaโ€™s fists balled at her sides. โ€œI wouldnโ€™t have had to read it if you were just honest with me! You knew about our father, and you never told me, Genevieve. How could you keep such a thing from me? I thought we were closer than that, but all this time youโ€™ve been living a completely different life.โ€

Genevieveโ€™s face softened now, a look of regret in her eyes. โ€œI didnโ€™t want to get your hopes up. Our fatherโ€ฆย he was so hard to track down. It took me a whole year of sneaking through Mommaโ€™s records and hidden journals to determine who he was and where theyโ€™d met. And then when I found out it was this placeโ€ฆโ€

Ophelia swallowed and nodded. โ€œAfter all of Motherโ€™s rules and warnings, this was the last place I thought our legacy would be tied to. And to find out about the cursesโ€ฆโ€

Genevieveโ€™s eyes widened. โ€œYou know about that part?โ€

โ€œI know a lot more than you think,โ€ Ophelia affirmed.

Genevieve sighed. โ€œAlright. Why donโ€™t we both start from the beginning?โ€

And they did.

The two of them were sitting, face to face, cross-legged atop Opheliaโ€™s comforter. Just like they used to when they were supposed to be asleep, and Genevieve would sneak into Opheliaโ€™s room to talk until they passed out well into the witching hours.

Now, instead of gossiping about which boy Genevieve kissed in the French Quarter, or which of their motherโ€™s customers definitely murdered the very relatives they were trying to summon, the two of them divulged every detail of their experience in the Devilโ€™s Manor.

Genevieve explained how she had been trackingย Phantasma ever since she figured out that their parents had met here, and the curse that had befallen them. She had intercepted several letters from a man named Gabriel White a couple years ago and kept tabs on his every move since. Sheโ€™d last tracked him to New Yorkโ€”Phantasmaโ€™s previous location before it had appeared in New Orleans.

Genevieve also explained how sheโ€™d accidentally found out they were in financial debt from a friend of a friend whose mother worked at New Orleans City Bank; when she confronted their mother about it, she was sworn to secrecy.

โ€œShe was afraid you were already under too much pressure,โ€ Genevieve admitted. โ€œShe was hoping to pay everything off in a few months. She even had me deliver some of the checks to the bank, so as not to tip you off since the two of you always went to town together. But then things gotโ€ฆย worse.โ€

โ€œWhat things?โ€ Ophelia pressed.

โ€œNo matter how many times I begged Mother to tell me why we were in debt, she wouldnโ€™t. Only that she had priorities that mattered more than the house. It was driving me mad not knowing the full story. You know how Iโ€™m nosyโ โ€”โ€

Ophelia snorted. An understatement.

โ€œโ€”and so I followed her.โ€

โ€œWhat do you mean, you followed her?โ€

โ€œIt was several months ago. You were sick with a head coldโ€”remember?โ€”and she said she was going into town to get you some healing herbs from that apothecary on Magazine Street she liked so much.โ€

Opheliaย didย remember that head cold. She got one almost every year from New Orleansโ€™s erratic winter temperatures.

โ€œWell, I knew something was going on when I found the exact herbs she was claiming she was out of stuffed in the back drawer of our medicine cabinet,โ€ Genevieve continued. โ€œNot to mention she had been checking for the mail boy fifty times a dayโ€”there was no doubt in my mind she was receiving letters from our father again and didnโ€™t want us to accidentally get ahold of them. So, when she said she was going to the apothecary, I followed her.โ€

โ€œAnd where did she really go?โ€

Genevieveโ€™s tone grew more serious. โ€œTo meet a Devil.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

Genevieve nodded. โ€œShe was bringing some sort of rare items the Devil had requested in payment for their dealโ€”the deal in which he erased our fatherโ€™s memory of us. But because of Phantasmaโ€™s curse, the Devil couldnโ€™t fully eradicate Gabrielโ€™s memory of our mother. The last thing Gabriel wrote to her was that he was going back to win Phantasma and would ask to be reunited with her as his prize. Weโ€™re in debt because she used most of the familyโ€™s fortune to secure a second home in case we needed to leave at a momentโ€™s notice. One that would be much harder for him to locate.โ€

โ€œYou mean we own a home thatโ€™s not Grimm Manor?โ€ Ophelia asked.

Genevieve nodded. โ€œShe made sure to have it warded by extremely powerful magic so our father wouldnโ€™t be able to pay a Witch or Seer to look for us anymore. The only problem is that she died before she was able to tell us about it andโ€ฆย I never found out where itโ€™s located.โ€

Ophelia sighed deeply. Another wild goose chase.

โ€œNow, how didย youย find out about our parents?โ€ Genevieve pressed.

โ€œBlackwell,โ€ Ophelia stated and then took a deep breath. She went through every point of almost every hour that sheโ€™d spent in Phantasma over the last weekโ€”leaving out a few of the more scandalous details here and thereโ€”and it felt good to get it all offย her chest.

When she was finished, Genevieve gave a low whistle. โ€œMother would be having another heart attack if she knew you made a blood oath.โ€

Ophelia winced and looked away.

Genevieve reared back. โ€œYouโ€™ve spoken to her?โ€

โ€œThat partโ€ฆย thereโ€™s this place called the Whispering Gate that Iโ€™m apparently able to summon if thereโ€™s someone on the other side waiting to talk to me. She was.โ€

Genevieveโ€™s eyes swelled with tears. โ€œHow was she? Was she okay?โ€

Ophelia nodded and grabbed her sisterโ€™s hand, squeezing it with affection. โ€œShe wanted me to tell you she loves you. Very much.โ€

Genevieve nodded, tucking a strand of her golden-brown hair behind her ear. โ€œYouโ€™ll have to explain more about that later. Right now, I want to know more about the Phantom and what the Hell you were doing when I found the two of you.โ€

Ophelia flushed but only asked, โ€œHow did you even find me?โ€

โ€œOh!โ€ Genevieve exclaimed. โ€œAย Devilย told me that there was a Necromancer here whose face looked an awful lot like mine. Isnโ€™t that odd?โ€

โ€œVery. Why would a Devil seek you out just to tell you that?โ€

โ€œIย meant,โ€ Genevieve corrected, โ€œisnโ€™t it odd they noticed our resemblance? No one ever discerns that unless weโ€™re next to each other.โ€

โ€œVivi.โ€ Ophelia sighed, exasperated. Of course that was what her sister was focusing on. โ€œGo back to the Devil. What did they look like?โ€

โ€œHot,โ€ Genevieve smiled. โ€œDark hair, handsome face, an ass like you wouldnโ€™tโ โ€”โ€

โ€œGenevieve Grimm.โ€

โ€œHe had creepy eyes, though,โ€ Genevieve continued. โ€œScarlet, with pupilsย like a catโ€™sโ โ€”โ€

Ophelia froze. Sinclair.

โ€œWhat, exactly, was your conversation with him?โ€ Ophelia demanded.

Genevieve gave Ophelia an odd look. โ€œWhen I got out of that last level, he found me in the hallway. He told me that thing about us looking alike, and I knew right away you were here. He told me what room you were in, so I came to find you. Whatโ€™s going on? Do you know him or something?โ€

โ€œOr something,โ€ Ophelia muttered before questioning, โ€œHow did you manage to get through all those levels? If I hadnโ€™t had Blackwellโ€ฆโ€

Genevieve took a deep breath. โ€œThereโ€™s one more secret about me that Iโ€™ve never shared, Ophie.โ€

Ophelia held her breath as she waited for her sisterโ€™s explanation, but Genevieve didnโ€™t speak. No, she disappeared. Entirely.

Ophelia gasped. โ€œYouโ€™re a Specter, too.โ€

Genevieve reappeared with a look of surprise. โ€œA Specter? You meanโ โ€”?โ€

Ophelia demonstrated her own ability, then explained, โ€œWe get it from our father, according to Blackwell.โ€

โ€œI still canโ€™t believe the Phantom youโ€™ve been fucking actually met our father.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t be crude.โ€ Ophelia blushed.

โ€œUh-oh, I know that face.โ€ Genevieve pointed at her, a look of fear in her eyes. โ€œItโ€™s not just fucking. You haveย feelingsย for him?โ€

โ€œI have an array of emotions for him,โ€ Ophelia muttered. โ€œHe can be quite the pain in the ass, I assure you.โ€

Genevieveโ€™s grin was absolutely scandalized. โ€œOh, I bet he can beโ โ€”โ€

โ€œVivi!โ€ Ophelia scolded, playfully hitting her sister on theย shoulder.

Genevieve tilted her head back and laughed. โ€œIโ€™m sorry, Ophie, I canโ€™t help but tease. Iโ€™ve never seen you like this! The juiciest thing you ever did was Elliott Trahan, and Iโ€™ve had more chemistry with a slice of bread pudding than you ever did with that stick in the mud.โ€

Ophelia grumbled good-naturedly before redirecting the conversation back to her original question. โ€œSo, you got through the levels by disappearing the entire time?โ€

Genevieve sobered. โ€œMore or less. You shouldโ€™ve seen me during that true or false one. If I hadnโ€™t been able to unshackle myself, I absolutely wouldโ€™ve been pummeled to mush. Turns out that Iโ€™m not too great at telling if people are lying.โ€

โ€œWhat about all the manorโ€™s haunts?โ€ Ophelia asked.

Genevieve shrugged. โ€œEasy to get out of those when you can walk through walls.โ€

โ€œYou mean, you can control your powers that well?โ€ Ophelia asked, slightly shocked.

Genevieve bit her lip. โ€œYes. Iโ€™ve been doing it since we were children. Itโ€™s second nature to me now. Itโ€™s how I always got away with things at home.โ€

โ€œIย knewย you were the one who stole that expensive bottle of liquor out of the cabinet during Mardi Gras all those years ago! No wonder Mother was so confusedโ€”you didnโ€™t need her key to do it.โ€

โ€œWell, she almost caught me that time,โ€ Genevieve muttered. โ€œActually, Iโ€™m pretty sure she figured it out, but she never even bothered to confront me about it. I guess it wasnโ€™t the right type of magic to make her notice me.โ€

โ€œViviโ€ฆโ€ Ophelia whispered. โ€œWhy didnโ€™t you ever tell me you could do such things?โ€

โ€œBecauseโ€ฆโ€ Genevieve looked mournful. โ€œI trust you, Ophie, truly, but when we were younger, I couldnโ€™t risk you slipping up and telling Momma. The way she sheltered youโ€”I didnโ€™t want that. I was always afraid sheโ€™d find out I had magic and take away my freedom like she did yours. If only Iโ€™d known she probably wouldnโ€™t have cared at all.โ€

โ€œShe didnโ€™t take away my freedomโ โ€”โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ Genevieve interrupted. โ€œShe fucking did.โ€

โ€œI had a good childhood, Vivi. I justโ€ฆย had different responsibilities and expectations than you.โ€

โ€œYou will never be able to fully understand how grateful I am that you are my big sister,โ€ Genevieve said. โ€œIf it had been anyone less selfless than you, I donโ€™t think weโ€™d be as close. But Iโ€™ve always struggled to watch you put off your dreams and interests andโ€ฆย your whole life because of your sense of duty toward our familyโ€™s legacy. I want you to be whoย youย want to be, Ophie.โ€

โ€œAreย we close?โ€ Ophelia whispered. โ€œThere was this girl in my groupโ€ฆย Luci.โ€

Genevieve reared back. โ€œLuci Veil?โ€

Ophelia nodded. โ€œShe told me you were friends. A whole group of you. I had never even heard their names beforeโ€”it felt like you were living an entire life without me. Like you were leaving me behind.โ€

Genevieve swallowed. โ€œI never wanted to rub my social life in your face when it made you so sad. I wanted to tell you about my friends. Iย willย tell you about them. Iโ€™ll tell you everything, Ophie. Youโ€™re the person I care most about in this worldโ€”you know that, donโ€™t you?โ€

Tears pricked the corner of Opheliaโ€™s eyes now. โ€œPlease donโ€™t ever drift away from me. I need you. Itโ€™s us. Forever. Right?โ€

โ€œPromise,โ€ Genevieve whispered as she leaned forward and wrapped Ophelia in a hug.

They stayed that way for what felt like hours,ย holding onto each other tightly as if to make sure that this was real, they were real and together, and it was alright now.

When Genevieve finally pulled back, she asked, โ€œWhat happened to Luci?โ€

Ophelia winced. โ€œSheโ€™s alive.โ€

Genevieve sighed in relief.

โ€œSheโ€™s alsoโ€ฆย cursed,โ€ Ophelia revealed before going into that entire story as well.

โ€œLuci is one of the best people Iโ€™ve ever met,โ€ Genevieve said. โ€œThatโ€™s devastating.โ€

โ€œShe was always nice. Her cousin, on the other handโ€ฆโ€

โ€œDo you mean Cade?โ€ Genevieveโ€™s eyes sparked with anger. โ€œCadeย was here? Heโ€™s possibly one of the most egregiously awful people Iโ€™ve ever had the displeasure of meeting. And that was in passing.โ€

โ€œGood to see his reputation really does precede him.โ€ Ophelia nodded. โ€œEspecially considering I killed him.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ Genevieve screeched.

โ€œIt was him or me in that last level, and I chose me.โ€

Genevieve looked at Ophelia as if she were seeing her anew. โ€œYouโ€™ve changed so much in so little time.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve never felt surer about who I am than I do now,โ€ Ophelia admitted. โ€œI know thatโ€™s strange. This is the last place I ever thought Iโ€™d find myself. But itโ€™s true.โ€

โ€œWell, itย isย the place of your origin,โ€ Genevieve joked. โ€œPoetic, if you think about it. Or perhaps thereโ€™s just something in the water here.โ€

Ophelia gave a soft laugh. โ€œOr that Iโ€™m just our motherโ€™s daughter.โ€

Then Genevieve offered, โ€œIโ€™m proud of you, Ophie.โ€

Ophelia couldโ€™ve sobbed right then. โ€œIโ€™mย sorry for what I said to you that day, in the alleyway. We had just said goodbye to Mother, and I was upset and stressed and Iโ€™m so sorry I drove you to come here.โ€

โ€œOh, Ophelia.โ€ Genevieve shook her head. โ€œIโ€™m sorry if you ever thought for a second you drove me here. I was coming here either way. It had always been my plan. What you said that dayโ€ฆย you werenโ€™t wrong. Youโ€™ve always cleaned up my messes, and I just wanted to do something forย youย for once.โ€

A weight lifted off Opheliaโ€™s shoulders at her sisterโ€™s words.

โ€œAlright.โ€ Genevieve clapped her hands together before climbing off the bed. โ€œNext item on the agendaโ€”we have forty-eight hours to make sure you donโ€™t have to give up a decade of your life to a s*xy Ghost. Where do we begin?โ€

Ophelia smiled. Sheโ€™d found her hope again.
