The words drained me like a plug being pulled from a basin.
I wiggled away from him and sat up against his headboard. โWhy did you just say that to me?โ
He sat back in the bed. โWhat?โ
โThat you love me. Why did you say it?โ โBecause I feel it?โ
โYouย canโtย feel it.โ
He looked amused. โWell, I do. And itโs not a big deal. If youโre not there yet, itโs fine.โ
But it wasnโt fine.
โWhat are you doing?โ I said. โWeโre not doing this.โ โDoing what?โ
โThis!โ I gestured between us. โAlexisโโ
I shook my head. โNo. We talked about this. You knew this wasnโt going to be a relationship. You knew this wasnโt going to last. I get the job tomorrow. It ends after that, so why throw that word around? What is the point?โ
He blinked at me. โThe point is that Iโm in love with you.โ My jaw set. โNo.โ
I got off the bed and started putting my clothes on. โAre you leaving?โ he asked, disbelief in his voice.
โYes.โ
โBecause I told you I love youโโ
โNo. Because youย thinkย you do. And you shouldnโt.โ I pulled on my yoga pants. โI should have ended this months ago. I should have gone with my gut.โ I pulled a shirt over my tangled wet hair.
Daniel was off the bed, jumping into jeans. โAlexisโฆโ I grabbed my bag and walked out of the room.
โAlexis!โ
I ignored him.
I came out into the sunlight to my car, and Daniel followed close on my heels. โHey!โ
โDaniel, this discussion is over.โ
โWe havenโt even had a discussion. How can it be over?โ he said to my back.
I chirped off my alarm.
โStop!โ He grabbed my wrist.
I whirled on him and yanked my arm down. โNo! You knew this was a temporary situation. Youย knewย this wasnโt going to have a happy ending.โ
He dragged a hand through his hair. โLook, I didnโt plan this either, but itโs happening now, and I canโt pretend that itโs not.โ
โItโsย not. Our lives donโtย work,โ I said. โThey donโt work together.โ
He shook his head. โHow do you know? Youโve never evenย triedย to make them work. You wonโt let me meet your friends or your family. I canโt know where you live. Give me a chance. Let me try. I can come to you. I can do everything.โ
I shook my head. โAnd how are you going to do everything, Daniel?
When you have to beย hereย to run this house.โ
โI wonโt buy it. Iโll move to Minneapolis to be near you.โ
My heartย broke. The declaration pushed the air right out of my lungs. โIโll get an apartment if you donโt want to live with me,โ he said. โIโll
get a job over there.โ
I let out a puff of air. โDaniel, you canโt leave Wakan. They need you.
You love it hereโโ
โI love you more. If you think I want any of this without you in it, you donโt knowย anythingย about me.โ His golden-green eyes held mine. โI canโt lose you. I wonโt. The job doesnโt have to end what we have. I wonโt let it.โ
I stood there, anguished. โItโs not even the job, Daniel. Thatโs just the logistics. Itโs myย life. My life isnโt compatible with your life.โ
He threw up his hands. โWhat the hell is the problem? Make me understand it. Weโre great together. What is this big, horrible thing that you think I canโt handle or we canโt figure out? Iโm your damn boyfriend, talk to me.โ
โYou areย notย my boyfriend.โ
I watched the words hit him like a smack.
โIf Iโm not your boyfriend, what the hell am I, Alexis?โ I didnโt answer.
โWhat am I? Nothing? Some fucking booty call? Really? Thatโs what you want to pretend this is?โ
Tears pricked my eyes. โThis could never work, Daniel. Not the way you want it toโโ
โWhy?โ
โOur lives are just too different. We donโt fit. You donโt know what I come from, the people Iโm around, the things they expect of meโthe way theyย are. I donโt know how to let you into my world,โ I said hopelessly. โIt feels more humane not to.โ
He put his hands on my arms. โLook me in the eye and tell me that you donโt love me. I want to hear you say that you donโt love me back. You say it and Iโll let you leave.โ
My chin quivered. โI canโt say it. Because I do love you. Andย thatย is the fucking problem.โ Tears spilled down my cheeks.
His eyes moved back and forth between mine. โIf you want something badly enough, Alexis, nothing else matters.โ
I shook my head. โThatโs not true,โ I whispered. โEverything matters.
All the time.โ
His sad eyes held mine, and I felt like I was going to crumble into dust. โItโs over, Daniel.โ
The words made him blow out a shaky breath.
I turned for the car, and his hands dropped away from me. Then a crack of lightning came out of nowhere.
Daniel grabbed me in a split second and pulled me into him, putting his back to the strike as it hit the oak by the entrance. An enormous branch broke off and fell across the driveway.
I stood there, my cheek pressed to Danielโs pounding chest. โDid you see that?โ he breathed.
I couldnโt even respond. It was like paddles had just shocked me back to life. I was instantly sobered.
โThereโs not even thunder,โ he said. โThereโs not evenย clouds.โ I peered around him.
The branch sat smoking in the driveway. I looked up at the sky. Nothing but blue. โWhat in the world?โ I whispered.
Then I pushed off him. โGo get your chain saw and move it. Iโm still leaving.โ
He shook his head. โNo. No way.โ
โWhat do you mean no way? I need to get out.โ
His eyes were wide. โIโm not messing with that. That was God.โ
โThat was notโโ I let a calming breath out through my nose. โDaniel, I do not believe that God had nothing better to do today than trap me in your driveway. I do not believe in cosmic interventions, I donโt believe in magic; that was a completely explainable weather phenomenon. You need to move that branch so I can leave.โ
Then a loud crack of thunder rolled, the heavens opened up, and rain poured over us. Sheets andย sheetsย of rain.
Rain. Without clouds.
I stood there, getting drenched, and Daniel crossed his arms in the downpour, looking amused. โThe universe doesnโt want you to leave,โ he shouted. โIn fact, Iโm going to say the universe wants you to go back inside.โ
โArrrrrg!โ I stomped to the garage in the mud.
I got into the door, and the second I did, I heard the deluge outside stop. Daniel came in after me and wrapped his arms around me from behind. It immediately de-escalated me, a robot powering down. I lost all the energy to fight him.
He stood there, holding me, his body curved around mine like it was made to fit me, and I felt like I was pressed against my other half. But heย couldnโtย be my other half, because if he was, wouldnโt we be made from the same thing? Why would we be as different as we were perfect for each other?
โI love you,โ he whispered. โWe areย together. This isnโt over. And even if you leave, it wonโt be over because youโll take the love with you and itโll bring you back.โ
He turned me, and I looked up at him, completely helpless. But it was okay that I was helpless because heโd never hurt me like Neil did. Heโd never do anything but what he does for all the people in his life. Heโd be devoted to me and cherish me and take care of me.
And he was right. I couldnโt escape this.
Love follows you. It goes where you go. It doesnโt know about social divides or distance or common sense. It doesnโt even stop when the person you love dies. It does what it wants.
Even if what you want is to not be in love.
