Chapter no 31 – Alexisโ€Œ

Part of Your World

The words drained me like a plug being pulled from a basin.

I wiggled away from him and sat up against his headboard. โ€œWhy did you just say that to me?โ€

He sat back in the bed. โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œThat you love me. Why did you say it?โ€ โ€œBecause I feel it?โ€

โ€œYouย canโ€™tย feel it.โ€

He looked amused. โ€œWell, I do. And itโ€™s not a big deal. If youโ€™re not there yet, itโ€™s fine.โ€

But it wasnโ€™t fine.

โ€œWhat are you doing?โ€ I said. โ€œWeโ€™re not doing this.โ€ โ€œDoing what?โ€

โ€œThis!โ€ I gestured between us. โ€œAlexisโ€”โ€

I shook my head. โ€œNo. We talked about this. You knew this wasnโ€™t going to be a relationship. You knew this wasnโ€™t going to last. I get the job tomorrow. It ends after that, so why throw that word around? What is the point?โ€

He blinked at me. โ€œThe point is that Iโ€™m in love with you.โ€ My jaw set. โ€œNo.โ€

I got off the bed and started putting my clothes on. โ€œAre you leaving?โ€ he asked, disbelief in his voice.

โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œBecause I told you I love youโ€”โ€

โ€œNo. Because youย thinkย you do. And you shouldnโ€™t.โ€ I pulled on my yoga pants. โ€œI should have ended this months ago. I should have gone with my gut.โ€ I pulled a shirt over my tangled wet hair.

Daniel was off the bed, jumping into jeans. โ€œAlexisโ€ฆโ€ I grabbed my bag and walked out of the room.

โ€œAlexis!โ€

I ignored him.

I came out into the sunlight to my car, and Daniel followed close on my heels. โ€œHey!โ€

โ€œDaniel, this discussion is over.โ€

โ€œWe havenโ€™t even had a discussion. How can it be over?โ€ he said to my back.

I chirped off my alarm.

โ€œStop!โ€ He grabbed my wrist.

I whirled on him and yanked my arm down. โ€œNo! You knew this was a temporary situation. Youย knewย this wasnโ€™t going to have a happy ending.โ€

He dragged a hand through his hair. โ€œLook, I didnโ€™t plan this either, but itโ€™s happening now, and I canโ€™t pretend that itโ€™s not.โ€

โ€œItโ€™sย not. Our lives donโ€™tย work,โ€ I said. โ€œThey donโ€™t work together.โ€

He shook his head. โ€œHow do you know? Youโ€™ve never evenย triedย to make them work. You wonโ€™t let me meet your friends or your family. I canโ€™t know where you live. Give me a chance. Let me try. I can come to you. I can do everything.โ€

I shook my head. โ€œAnd how are you going to do everything, Daniel?

When you have to beย hereย to run this house.โ€

โ€œI wonโ€™t buy it. Iโ€™ll move to Minneapolis to be near you.โ€

My heartย broke. The declaration pushed the air right out of my lungs. โ€œIโ€™ll get an apartment if you donโ€™t want to live with me,โ€ he said. โ€œIโ€™ll

get a job over there.โ€

I let out a puff of air. โ€œDaniel, you canโ€™t leave Wakan. They need you.

You love it hereโ€”โ€

โ€œI love you more. If you think I want any of this without you in it, you donโ€™t knowย anythingย about me.โ€ His golden-green eyes held mine. โ€œI canโ€™t lose you. I wonโ€™t. The job doesnโ€™t have to end what we have. I wonโ€™t let it.โ€

I stood there, anguished. โ€œItโ€™s not even the job, Daniel. Thatโ€™s just the logistics. Itโ€™s myย life. My life isnโ€™t compatible with your life.โ€

He threw up his hands. โ€œWhat the hell is the problem? Make me understand it. Weโ€™re great together. What is this big, horrible thing that you think I canโ€™t handle or we canโ€™t figure out? Iโ€™m your damn boyfriend, talk to me.โ€

โ€œYou areย notย my boyfriend.โ€

I watched the words hit him like a smack.

โ€œIf Iโ€™m not your boyfriend, what the hell am I, Alexis?โ€ I didnโ€™t answer.

โ€œWhat am I? Nothing? Some fucking booty call? Really? Thatโ€™s what you want to pretend this is?โ€

Tears pricked my eyes. โ€œThis could never work, Daniel. Not the way you want it toโ€”โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œOur lives are just too different. We donโ€™t fit. You donโ€™t know what I come from, the people Iโ€™m around, the things they expect of meโ€”the way theyย are. I donโ€™t know how to let you into my world,โ€ I said hopelessly. โ€œIt feels more humane not to.โ€

He put his hands on my arms. โ€œLook me in the eye and tell me that you donโ€™t love me. I want to hear you say that you donโ€™t love me back. You say it and Iโ€™ll let you leave.โ€

My chin quivered. โ€œI canโ€™t say it. Because I do love you. Andย thatย is the fucking problem.โ€ Tears spilled down my cheeks.

His eyes moved back and forth between mine. โ€œIf you want something badly enough, Alexis, nothing else matters.โ€

I shook my head. โ€œThatโ€™s not true,โ€ I whispered. โ€œEverything matters.

All the time.โ€

His sad eyes held mine, and I felt like I was going to crumble into dust. โ€œItโ€™s over, Daniel.โ€

The words made him blow out a shaky breath.

I turned for the car, and his hands dropped away from me. Then a crack of lightning came out of nowhere.

Daniel grabbed me in a split second and pulled me into him, putting his back to the strike as it hit the oak by the entrance. An enormous branch broke off and fell across the driveway.

I stood there, my cheek pressed to Danielโ€™s pounding chest. โ€œDid you see that?โ€ he breathed.

I couldnโ€™t even respond. It was like paddles had just shocked me back to life. I was instantly sobered.

โ€œThereโ€™s not even thunder,โ€ he said. โ€œThereโ€™s not evenย clouds.โ€ I peered around him.

The branch sat smoking in the driveway. I looked up at the sky. Nothing but blue. โ€œWhat in the world?โ€ I whispered.

Then I pushed off him. โ€œGo get your chain saw and move it. Iโ€™m still leaving.โ€

He shook his head. โ€œNo. No way.โ€

โ€œWhat do you mean no way? I need to get out.โ€

His eyes were wide. โ€œIโ€™m not messing with that. That was God.โ€

โ€œThat was notโ€”โ€ I let a calming breath out through my nose. โ€œDaniel, I do not believe that God had nothing better to do today than trap me in your driveway. I do not believe in cosmic interventions, I donโ€™t believe in magic; that was a completely explainable weather phenomenon. You need to move that branch so I can leave.โ€

Then a loud crack of thunder rolled, the heavens opened up, and rain poured over us. Sheets andย sheetsย of rain.

Rain. Without clouds.

I stood there, getting drenched, and Daniel crossed his arms in the downpour, looking amused. โ€œThe universe doesnโ€™t want you to leave,โ€ he shouted. โ€œIn fact, Iโ€™m going to say the universe wants you to go back inside.โ€

โ€œArrrrrg!โ€ I stomped to the garage in the mud.

I got into the door, and the second I did, I heard the deluge outside stop. Daniel came in after me and wrapped his arms around me from behind. It immediately de-escalated me, a robot powering down. I lost all the energy to fight him.

He stood there, holding me, his body curved around mine like it was made to fit me, and I felt like I was pressed against my other half. But heย couldnโ€™tย be my other half, because if he was, wouldnโ€™t we be made from the same thing? Why would we be as different as we were perfect for each other?

โ€œI love you,โ€ he whispered. โ€œWe areย together. This isnโ€™t over. And even if you leave, it wonโ€™t be over because youโ€™ll take the love with you and itโ€™ll bring you back.โ€

He turned me, and I looked up at him, completely helpless. But it was okay that I was helpless because heโ€™d never hurt me like Neil did. Heโ€™d never do anything but what he does for all the people in his life. Heโ€™d be devoted to me and cherish me and take care of me.

And he was right. I couldnโ€™t escape this.

Love follows you. It goes where you go. It doesnโ€™t know about social divides or distance or common sense. It doesnโ€™t even stop when the person you love dies. It does what it wants.

Even if what you want is to not be in love.
