โI
fuckingย knew it!โ Sarah says, whispering inches from my face, her finger wagging.
โWhatever happened to hello?โ I ask, looking around the hallway she dragged me into the moment Bo and I stepped through her front door for DND night.
โYou want hello? Fine. Hi! How are you? When did you two start sleeping together?โ Sarah shakes my shoulders, her smile open and wide.
โWhat? We areย not,โ I say, shrugging her off. โStep back, weirdo!โ I whisper-yell.
She opens the door to Calebโs office and shoves me through it. โTell me everything.โ
โLiterally nothing has happened, Sarah,โ I say, taking a few steps to get my balance after being pushed. โWould you calm down? Fucking hell.โ
โThere was aย look. I saw it.โ She points to her eyes in a fury.
โWhat look?โ I ask, falling across the two-seater couch across from Calebโs desk in front of a dark oakโpanelled wall.
โYou two walked in, and Bo looked toward the table where we set everything up. Then he checked in with you. A tilt of his head and a sweet little smile, then you nodded. He was getting permission to walk over there. Thatโs the look of a man on someoneโs leash. Pussy-whipped!โ
โYou didย notย just say pussy-whipped. Please, please, please tell me you didnโt,โ I say, covering my face.
โSo you do not deny,โ Sarah says, dropping into Calebโs chair and throwing her feet up onto the desk in the centre of the room.
โIย doย deny. The most weโve done since Halloween is hug.โย Dancing is hugging, just extended, right?ย It doesnโt count.
Sarahโs eyes narrow on me in suspicion. โYou do give great hugs,โ she whispers. โBut notย thatย good.โ
โBoโs thoughtful. He was just making sure I was cool before he ditched me to see his friends. Simple as that.โ
โSo youโre telling me that I havenโt seen you in forty yearsโโitโs been twelve daysโโbecause youโve been held up in your house with himย notย boinking?โ
I choose to let her use of the wordย boinkingย slide. โWeโve been hanging out,โ I say defensively. โWe go for walks to the water to talk. We hang out on the couch and watch nerdy movies that Bo likes. Iโm also still workingย andย growing a human. So yes, thatโs all weโve been doing. Sorry to disappoint.โ
โHow much talking do yโall need to do until you figure it out?โ
I level her with a fierce glare. โWe had to get to know each other, right?
That was the whole fucking point of moving in together.โ โAnd?โ Sarah asks.
โAnd what?โ
โDo you know each other?โ She throws her arms up, apparently exasperated.
โYes.โ
โAnd?โ
โAndย what?โ I snap, crossing my arms in front of my chest tightly. โIs he a good guy?โ
โYes, obviously.โ โAnd?โ
โOh my god, what now?โ โDo you feel safe with him?โ โYes.โ
โSo?โ
โSoย what?โ I yell.
โAre you in love with him?โ โYes!โ
Wait,ย what?
โNo!โ I say, panic-stricken. โNo, no, noโโ But itโs too late. Sarah is up from her seat, slapping the desk with both palms like a drum.
โVindication!โ she shouts, her hands like claws pointed at the ceiling. โShut up,โ I whisper, rubbing my forehead. โPlease,โ I beg pathetically.
โDonโt.โ
โI was right,โ she says, sitting back down. โWinnifred McNulty is in
love.โ
โSarah, I love him, but Iโm notย inย love with him.โ โBullshit,โ she spits, shaking her head.
โI mean it,โ I say, my voice involuntarily pitching higher. โI mean it,โ I repeat, steadier.
Sarah narrows her eyes on me, swiping her tongue across her teeth under closed lips. โOkay, then. Letโs play worst-case scenario.โ
โWhy?โ I sigh out.
โHumour me,โ she says, pushing the wheeled desk chair around the room until sheโs directly across from me, our knees almost touching. Sheโs ridiculous but entertaining. Iโll give her that. โWorst-case scenarioโa year from now. Baby is happy and healthy. Just think aboutย you. Tell me; no hesitation.โ
โUmโฆโ Iย immediatelyย hesitate.
โNo!โ She flicks the side of my head, and I swat her away. โJust speak!โ
Fuck.
โThis is stupid,โ I say, tightening my arms across my chest.
โYouโre being a child. Grow up and face your feelings. You love Bo.
Youโreย inย love with Bo. Admit it.โ โNo!โ
โWhy?โ she yells.
โI wasย hurt, Sarah. I was hurt so badly, and you donโt even know the half of it.โ The moment the words leave me, all the breath in my lungs goes with them.
โSoย tellย me, Win. Fucking tell me so we can work through it. Iโve been asking forย yearsย what happened.ย Or tell someone. Anyone. A professional, preferably. Or, Bo, maybeโsince heย shouldย know.โ
โHe made me feel smallโ is all I manage to say, tears threatening to pour. โJack made me feel small and stupid and incapable, and Iย neverย want to feel that way again. I gave him my self-esteem on a goddamn silver platter, and like a fucking idiot, I was surprised when he took it and ate me whole.โ
โJack is a fuckwad who will burn every bridge he ever builds. You are
notย any of those things, Win.โ
โYeah, I know thatย now.ย It took me all these years since Jack to remember who I am and what Iโm not. I donโtโฆ I donโt want to forget again.โ
โYou wonโt.โ
โI might! Because I keep forgetting a lot of things, apparently! Like, for example, the fact that Bo is most likelyย stillย in love with your sister-in-law. That night we spent togetherย meantย something to us both, but thatโs just it. It was aย night.ย He was with Cora forย years.ย And even though she broke his heart and left him during the worst possible time of his life, he still cares for her. Still. That loyalty. Thatโฆ type of connectionโฆ I canโt expect him to feel more for me after just a few months of being thrust into this situation together. I canโt live with the thought that he might wish I was her. That I was just the available option.โ
Sarah sighs, her eyes held on me as her chest falls. โWinโฆโ โNo, itโs fine. Iโve got it handled.โ
โWinโฆ youโveย gotย to talk to him.โ
โI canโt,โ I whisper, my voice breaking. โI canโt do it again. I canโt talk to him. I canโt put my heart on another platter and expect a different result.โ
โJust, tell me this. Whatย isย your worst-case scenario?โ she asks, her eyes heavy and lips pouted in concentration. โA year from now, you wake up andโฆโ she adds, waving me on.
Thatโs the scary thing. At first, I wanted to answer that it was letting Boย in,ย just to be proven right. A type of right Iโd never want to be. That heโd be careless with my heart and my feelings, and that a year from now, Iโd wake
up and realise Iโd done it againโfallen for the wrong type of man. But thatโs no longer it.
Theย worst-case scenario is not having found out what being with Bo
couldย be like.
โSeeing Bo in love with someone else. That heโll have a beautiful girlfriend who loves my kid too, and theyโll take them for walks on the beach, and dance in his dining room, andโand Iโll be somewhere else. Alone. Missing him. Missing whatย couldย have been. Realising that he was ready to move onโฆ and I wasnโt his first choice.โ
โDo you really think Bo would let it play out that way if he knew? Because, from where Iโm standing, that man looks at you like you hung the moon. More than that. The sun too. Iโve never seenย anyoneย look at another person like that.โ
โI donโt think heโd intend to hurt me,โ I whisper, mostly to myself. โBut we donโt know if he feels the same. I donโt know if itโs justโฆ attraction.โ
โItโs not lust in his eyes, Win. Itโs so much more than that.โ
โWhat if itโs just hormones? What if itโs just some primal, lizard part of my brain telling me to stay close to the man I procreated with? What if I pop this baby out, and suddenly, heโs some intolerable toad?โ
โDo youย seriouslyย think that, Win? That women are just skin suits operated by poor instinct and hormones?โ She rolls her eyes, sitting straighterโin a manโs wide-spread posture. โWomen areย too emotional,โ Sarah says in a deeper voice. โThey canโt be in charge when their bodies make them go crazy once a month.โ
โNo,โ I say pointedly, glaring at her.
โAnd why are we acting likeย hisย emotions should dictate yours? Iโm asking whatย youย feel. Not him.โ
โRight. Yeah,โ I respond weakly.
โSo say it. Say it out loud. Be honest with yourselfย andย me.โ
I take a deep breath in, straightening my shoulders. Still, my voice comes out soft and timid. โI love Bo.โ
โEven if heโs in love with someone else?โ โYes,โ I say, pathetic as it may be.
โEven if heโs not ready to love you back the same?โ
I nod, staring up at the ceiling as I place my hands on my neck. โBut isnโt thatย beyondย stupid?โ
โLoveย isย stupid, Win,โ she says softly. โSo what are you going to do about it?โ
I crumple into myself with a pathetic whine. โDo youย reallyย think he looks at me like that? Youโd truly betโโ
โI do, Win. I do, and I love it so much.โ Sarah reaches out, untangling my arms folded tight against my chest. She grips both of my hands and holds them. โYou deserve this!โ she says, shaking me a little until I smile for her, as forced as it may feel. โAnd I know this is also aย pregnantย thing, but youโre glowing. You seem so much lighter. When you two stepped in here together, it wasnโt like it was a few months ago. Then, it was like two people with chemistry and a sexy secret. Now, you look like the real deal.โ
โIโm scared,โ I whisper, crinkling my nose as we hold eye contact lightly. โI know,โ Sarah says, brushing her thumb over the back of my hand.
โBut I think if you ask him, heโll be gentle with your heart.โ I nod, inhaling deeply.
โI also think youโre not that girl with the silver platter anymore. Youโve grown past that version of yourself. And I think assholes like Jack would take anyone as kind as you and try to twist them into something ugly. Thatโs
what people like him do. It isnโt your fault you tried to see the best in him. Or that you didnโt want to be alone. Youโve gotta forgive yourself for that.โ
I roll my eyes up, feeling a tear slip out. โFucking hell,โ I whimper, half laughing.
โToo much?โ Sarah asks, laughing softly at me.
I shake my head, lifting off the couch and throwing my arms around her shoulders. โI love you,โ I say.
โI love you,โ she repeats back to me. โAnd thatโs never going to change.โ When I sit again, neither of us moves or speaks. We just let the moment linger, encouraging smiles reflected back at one another. โIโm gonna try,โ I say, sniffling. โIโm not sure when, because doing it sober will be a challenge and a half. But Iโm going to tell him how I feel. Eventually. Soon,
if I can.โ
โAnd Iโll be there to say I told you so when that man tries to get you knocked up all over again.โ
I roll my eyes, but I canโt help but grin, all the while imagining what could be. Theย best-case scenario, for once.
The version of life where Bo and I walk hand in hand into something new for us both. Slow, assured, and delicate with one another. Where maybe weย wouldย do this on purpose. Maybe aย fewย timesโif weโre any good at the parenting side of things.
And I can see it, clear as any memory. Weโd build our kid a treehouse in the spring and drink wine on unhurried summer evenings on the back porch. Our limbs intertwined as we sit on a swinging bench, watching them play. A life where weโd make love as many times as we find each other with teeth and force and passion. Years and years spent still getting to know one another, unlearning and relearning each other as the decades go by.
Uncovering the intricate layers and deepest spots until every darkened corner is found. The mess and the chaos and the beauty of a life well lived
โa life shared.
Iโd like it very much.
So much it scares me even more. But not enough to not try.
โMaybe you could tell Bo how you feel on his birthday? Tie a bow around your tits and let him unwrap you. You must beย dyingย to fog up those glasses of his.โย And sheโs back.
โI need your help with that, actually.โ Sarah gapes. โNo,โ I say sharply, silencing her. โNotย that.ย A party. Iโm going to ask Boโs dad to keep him busy during the day so I can set up and have a few of Boโs friends over. He deserves something to celebrate him. Will you help me?โ
โObviously! Boโs one of us now. I canโt be caught slacking on a birthday.โ
I smile up at her before looking around the room absently, then to the door on a steadying inhale. โShould we get back out there?โ
โNah, let them miss us.โ She smiles mischievously. โOh, I forgot in all the chaosโฆ Did you want to take a bath while youโre here? I picked up your favourite stuff, just in case.โ
โI could kiss you right now,โ I say to her, reaching to gently pat her cheek.
โIโll take that as a yes,โ she says, pushing off her knees to stand. โAnd save the kissing for Bo.โ She snickers, walking toward the door.
