Seventeen Weeks Pregnant. Baby is the size of a pear.
โO
kay, buddy!โ I say, kneeling in the shallow end of the pool. โNow I want you to ball your hand up in a fist.โ I help Henry fold up his
bigger hand. โPerfect! Now weโre going to swim as normal, okay? I just want to try something.โ
Henry nods, presenting me two thumbs with both fists before he falls onto his tummy and starts swimming toward the far end of the pool. Cam hovers by the side of the pool, waiting for him there and shouting words of encouragement.
Henryโs smaller hand is a lot like mine but with a slightly less-developed thumb. Itโs on the opposite side of his body, too, so it takes some trial and error to find the right method for him.
But we do.
Forty minutes into his one hour of private swim, heโs swimming straight and maybe evenย fasterย than he was before.
Because of me.
โYou did an awesome job today, Henry!โ I say, kneeling next to the pool as he shakes water out of his floppy hair like a puppy, giggling.
โI was so fast!โ
โYou were!โ I say, smiling up at Cam over his shoulder as he approaches. โAnd Iโm not bumping into the rope anymore. I went like an arrow!
Straight!โ
โLike an arrow, exactly.โ I squish my face together, smiling so hard I canโt help it. โGreat job, buddy.โ
โThank you, Winnie!โ He throws his arms around my neck. โIโm gonna be a swimmer like you,โ he says quietly before letting go.
I stand up, watching Henry walk toward the glass door where his parents are waiting for him. I wave to Cam and turn to walk toward the womenโs changing rooms, but he stops me.
โHey, wait. Come meet his parents. Theyโre going to want to thank you.โ โOh, no, I donโtโโ
โWin, cโmon.โ Cam brings his hand up in the air, waving me toward them, in view of Henryโs parents. Itโd be rude not to now.
I follow behind, wrapping a towel around me as I do. Theyโre bustling with excited conversation by the time I make my way over, and Henry is bursting with pride as his mom wraps him in a towel and a hug.
โHi,โ I say, waving shyly. โTonya, Jamesโthis is Win.โ
โWin is the best swimmer of all time!โ Henry shouts.
His parents laugh. โWe saw that,โ Tonya says, smiling at me. โThanks so much for coming. We could see how much confidence it gave him from all the way out here.โ
โAnd Cam says youโre opening a camp?โ James asks.
โOh, well, not really. Itโs more of a dream at the moment. Weโre starting to make plans. Next step is finding investors, and then we have to find property. Itโs a big uphill climb, butโฆsomeday,โ I say.
They immediately look disappointed.
โIโm sorry. Iโd love to have Henry atย anyย camp. Maybe in a few years, huh, buddy?โ
Henry nods, hitting me with a beaming smile with missing teeth and a wrinkled nose.
His dad, James, clears his throat. โI, uh, I donโt normally do this, butโฆโ He pulls out his wallet and hands me a business card. โIf youโre looking for investors, please get in touch.โ I take the card hesitantly. โWeโve seen what you can do in an hour, and Iโm impressed. Other kids should get that chance.โ
โOh, Iโโ I almost dismiss myself. I nearly tell them every way in which Iโm unqualified, unprofessional, incapable. I even, almost, hand back the business card. But I donโt. I stop myself.
Maybe itโs because of the hope on their faces and the smile still stuck on Henryโs.
Maybe itโs because of Bo, telling me how capable I am. Howย possible
this is.
Mostly, I think, itโs because of me. Because of how much stronger I feel lately.
I let myself feel proud of everything I did with Henry today, the years of schooling that prepared me for this, the life Iโve lived with my hand and the experiences Iโve gathered just by having it. And I hold my head high.
โThank you,โ I say. โIโll definitely be in touch. Thank you,โ I add again
โbecause I canโt resist. โIt was great to meet you, buddy. Youโre going to
do great with Mr. Cam, here.โ
โThanks again,โ Tonya says as they usher Henry toward the changing rooms.
Cam shuts the door and then smiles at me withย I told you soย eyes.
I look at the business card in my hand and take a deep inhale.ย James Burrough, President of Burrough Financial Holdings.
โWin, I think youโre getting your camp.โ
โI mean, he could easily change his mind. I still have to make a proposal and findโโ I stop myselfย again. Sometimesโฆ things are just good things.ย I could spend my whole life waiting for the other shoe to drop, or I could begin training myself to expect the best. Embrace gratitude and drop the scepticism. โThisโฆ this is very cool, isnโt it? The chances of running into you here, meeting Henry and his parentsโฆ Itโsโฆโ
โVery cool,โ Cam says, starting to lead the way to the changing rooms. โYou said โweโ before. Do you have a business partner orย someoneย else?โ
โDid I?โ
โYeah. You said, โweโre starting to make plans,โ when Tonya asked just now.โ
โOh, Iโฆโ I consider what Bo and I are to each other and decide to simplify it as best I can. โMy roommate and me. Heโs in finance and is helping me out.โ
โOh, okay,โ Cam says, his smile crooked and his eyes narrowed in on me.ย Uh-oh.ย I know that look. โWould you maybe want to grab a drink, then? A late dinner?โ
Yep,ย thereย it is.
I grimace, putting a hand on Camโs shoulder and patting him just once before removing it. โSo, funny story about my roommate. Actuallyโฆโ
โGot it,โ Cam says, laughing under his breath. โItโs complicated, I take it?โ
โBeyond complicated.โ
โWant to grab a very platonic drink and talk about it, then?โ
I laugh, looking up to the ceiling. โSo, actually, I canโt drink either.โ โOh,โ Cam says, his eyes dropping down to my stomach.
โYepโฆโ
โThe roommateโs?โ
โYeah,โ I breathe out.
โThatย isย complicated.โ He winces, smiling even still. โIt is,โ I say.
โSo no Westcliff this year?โ he asks.
I shake my head, frowning. โNot this year.โ โAh, well, weโll miss you.โ
โIโll miss it too.โ
โYou know, if you wanted to, I bet Henryโs parents would rather have you teaching him. Iโve got a pretty full schedule already, and you could take over his lessons. Itโs two hundred bucks a week after the pool rental.โ
โTwo hundred?โ I nearly yell. โFor an hour?โ
โIโm telling youโฆโ Cam says, reaching down to grab his towel and flipping it over his shoulder. โJames has gotย campย money.โ
โIโd love that,โ I say. โAre you sure?โ
โJust remember me when itโs time to hire for that camp of yours,โ Cam says with a wink.
โAbsolutely,โ I say, smiling back at him.
โIโll text you the details, then,โ he says. โSee you around, Win.โ โThank you,โ I shout after him when he disappears from view.
