VIOLET

โ€œViolet!โ€ Brennan shouts, racing down the steps of Riorson House and into the moonlit courtyard.

Sounds of celebration stream through the open doors.

I groggily rise to my feet beside Imogen, and a shape moves in the shadows to the right.

โ€œI will not let them burn you,โ€ย Andarna vows.

โ€œWhat?โ€ย My head whips her way.ย โ€œWhy would my brother burn me?โ€ย And why in Dunneโ€™s name would I be sitting on gravel in the courtyard? My thoughts areโ€ฆslow. Somethingโ€™s off.

Somethingโ€™s wrong.

โ€œAre you all right?โ€ I ask Brennan as he reaches us.

โ€œAmย Iย all right?โ€ His eyes bulge, and he looks me over for injury. โ€œItโ€™s three oโ€™clock in the morning! Where have you been?โ€ His voice rises, and a group of riders I donโ€™t recognize comes through the gate at our left. โ€œWeilsen?โ€ Brennan asks, and the taller one walks our way. โ€œReport.โ€ He glances over his shoulder. โ€œQuietly.โ€

My mouth opens, then shuts. Whereย haveย I been?

โ€œWeโ€™veโ€”โ€ The officerโ€™s gaze darts over me.

โ€œItโ€™s fine,โ€ Brennan assures him.

โ€œOfficial numbers are four riders, their dragons, and three elders murdered in the valley in what weโ€™re estimating is the last few hours,โ€ Weilsen says. โ€œAnd we still have five riders missingโ€”four now,โ€ he adds, looking at me. His mouth tenses. โ€œBut after that display, we all know Riorson did this. I bet the other three are already dead.โ€

My stomach lurches, and Imogen tenses so hard she might as well be stone.

Wait. Is this a dream? I clench my right fist and prick my palm with my fingernails just enough to feel pain, but I donโ€™t wake.

โ€œThe wards are holding in Draithus as of the last report, but who knows how many of those desiccations during the battle were actually him,โ€ Weilsen continues. โ€œAnd so far, the tally is at six missing eggs from the hatching ground, but theyโ€™re double-checking.โ€

Missing eggs? I reach for Tairn, but the bond feels foggy, like heโ€™s asleep.

โ€œHe needs a cycle of rest to recover,โ€ย Andarna clarifies.

โ€œRecover fromย what?โ€ He was fine when I saw him last, which was about five minutes ago, in the woods at the edge of the fieldโ€”

Where I killed Theophanie.

Xaden.

The wall of shadowsโ€ฆ My heart sinks. What the fuck is happening? How did I get here? Why is my head so hazy? Am I concussed?

โ€œYouโ€™re dismissed,โ€ Brennan tells the rider. โ€œKeep this classified until we have a full report.โ€

โ€œJust because sheโ€™s your sister doesnโ€™t mean sheโ€™s not the fastest wayโ€”โ€

โ€œDismissed!โ€ Brennan snaps, and the rider backs away.

โ€œDo you know where he is?โ€ Brennan asks me softly once the other rider is fully out of earshot. โ€œRiorson? You heard what Weilsen said. We have dead dragons and riders and missing eggs, and if youโ€™ve seen Riorson, I need to know, Violet.โ€

โ€œIโ€ฆโ€ Words fail me. Why canโ€™t Iย think? โ€œI donโ€™t know.โ€ I raise my hands to my mouth, and a piece of parchment in my front pocket catches on my arm, then falls.

Brennan catches it. โ€œCardulo?โ€ He lifts his eyes to Imogen.

โ€œI havenโ€™t seen him since yesterday,โ€ she says, her voice low, almost monotone. โ€œLieutenant Tavis?โ€

โ€œAmong the missing,โ€ Brennan answers gently, then glances my way and does a double take. โ€œHoly shit, Violet.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ I lower my arms. Garrick is missing, too? Who else makes up the four riders Weilsen mentioned?

โ€œYour finger,โ€ Imogen says, then stares at the ground.

My finger?ย The snap.ย Right. โ€œI think I broke my arm.โ€ I glance down and stare.

My left arm is splinted, and a beautiful gold ring with an emerald the size of my thumbnail sits on my hand. Oh gods, I know that stone. It matches the others from the Blade of Aretia upstairs on Xadenโ€™s nightstand. Is it the missing one? โ€œWhat is happening right now?โ€ I ask slowly.

โ€œYou donโ€™t know?โ€ Brennan lowers his voice.

I shake my head.

Brennan turns to the paper from my pocket. โ€œThis carries the seal of Dunne,โ€ he says. โ€œMay I open it?โ€

I nod, gawking at the ring. Itโ€™s not just any ring on any finger. Itโ€™sย theย finger. But how? I was in the field battling Theophanie this afternoon, and then she desiccated and I burned myself straight into unconsciousness. Now itโ€™s three a.m. and Iโ€™m in Aretia, and there are murdered dragons and riders, missing riders and missing eggs? Xaden wouldnโ€™t do that.

Would he?

The storm of shadows.ย My blood chills. How far had he gone? I fling myself down the bond, but thereโ€™s nothing there. Itโ€™sย gone.

Or heโ€™s too far away to feel it, I remind myself to keep from panicking. When had he put this ring on my hand?

โ€œItโ€™s an official blessing of your legal, binding marriage,โ€ Brennan whispers, stunned, then quickly rolls the parchment. โ€œBy the head priestess of Dunneโ€™s temple.โ€

โ€œTo Xaden?โ€ Gravity bends, warping everything I thought I knew into whatever this reality is.

Brennan nods.

My eyes flare. Weโ€™reย married? A thousand emotions try to force their way through my jumbled thoughts, but the immediate rush of awe trips right over the logic ofย how.ย Thereโ€™s no fucking way Iโ€™d forget something like that. Why isnโ€™t he here? Where did he go? And why?

โ€œI think the note on the outside is meant for you.โ€ Brennan hands back the parchment.

I flip the missive over to see two sentences written in Xadenโ€™s handwriting.

Donโ€™t look for me. Itโ€™s yours now.

Heโ€™s gone.

I try to fumble my foggy brain through the overwhelming shock, but I canโ€™t think straight. Itโ€™s like someone has fucked with myโ€”

No.

My chest draws tight. โ€œHow long have I been missing?โ€

โ€œTwelve hours,โ€ Brennan answers.

โ€œWhat did you do?โ€ My head snaps toward Imogen, and a deep sense of foreboding takes root in my chest.

She slowly lifts her gaze to mine. โ€œWhat you asked me to.โ€
