Chapter no 6

Onyx Storm (The Empyrean, #3)

Never turn your back on a rider.

โ€”Major Afendraโ€™s Guide to the Riders Quadrant (Unauthorized Edition)

โ€œYou dareโ€”โ€ Aura turns to fully face me, yanking off her other glove.

โ€œI dare.โ€ I lift my open palms skyward, and heat streaks along my arms as I release a wave of power, forcing it upward and letting it go.

Lightning splits the sky, flashing bright above our heads and branching outward into the clouds. Thunder follows instantly, so loud it shakes the masonry.

The crowd quiets, and Auraโ€™s mouth hangs for a moment before she lowers her hands.

โ€œYou see, Dainโ€™s too honorable to wield in a challenge, but youโ€™ll find that my sense of morality has learned toโ€ฆwaver.โ€ I retrieve another dagger and shake it in her direction. โ€œYou lift your hand against him again, and the next one goes through it. Heโ€™s the reason youโ€™re alive. The reason youโ€™reย allย alive!โ€ Powerย thrums through me, buzzing with readiness, and I slip my left hand into the pocket of my flight jacket and remove the conduit.

โ€œViolet,โ€ Rhiannon warns softly from my right.

โ€œShh, itโ€™s more fun when she blows shit up,โ€ Ridoc whispers.

I turn slightly and draw on lesser magic to allow my voice to carry to the Navarrian riders while keeping an eye on Aura. Theyโ€™ve closed in, taking this situation from dangerous to lethal. โ€œThe only reason you survived the attack is because we gained access to the knowledge Navarre purposely hid from us. We stole it. We translated it. We saved your ass.โ€ Warmth streaks down my arm, the conduit beginning to hum. โ€œAnd yes, we expect you to recognize that we need this alliance to survive whatโ€™s coming for us!โ€

โ€œYou expect us to trust them?โ€ Caroline calls out.

Aura retreats a step, eyeing my conduit.

โ€œYou have to,โ€ I answer, pushing against the heat that flushes my skin as power gathers within me again. โ€œBut more importantly, youย can. Theyโ€™ve fought by our side for months, even after weโ€™ve spent centuries condemning their people to death because weโ€™re unwilling to share the one resource that could have saved them. We donโ€™t have to like each other, but we do have to trust each other, and we canโ€™t keep doing this, canโ€™t keep accepting needless casualties in the quadrant in the name of strengthening the wing, not when every single one of us is needed in this war.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s their war!โ€ Aura challenges. โ€œDo you really believe we should weaken our wards, endanger our own people just to arm theirs? You choose Poromiel over Navarre?โ€

โ€œWe can choose both.โ€ I slip my dagger back into place and free my hand to wield.

Aaric lifts his sword as Ewan Faber comes a little too close.

โ€œThe riders who came before us failed to protect the innocent just because they were on the other side of our border,โ€ I argue.ย โ€œThey lied and hid.ย Theyย were the cowards! But we donโ€™t have to be. We can choose to stand together and fight. Leadership is locked behind doors right now trying to forge a treaty.โ€ My gaze skims over the riders who stayed when we fled for Aretia three months ago. โ€œBut theyโ€™re failing, just like every generation before us has failed, and if we do the sameโ€ฆโ€ I shake my head, fumbling for words. โ€œYouโ€™ve seen whatโ€™s out there. Either this alliance begins right here with us, withย ourย generation, or we will be the last dragon riders and gryphon fliers on the Continent.โ€ Sweat beads along the back of my neck, my temperature rising with every second I keep my power ready. โ€œWell?โ€ I ask.

Silence falls, thick and heavy, but no one moves.

โ€œIs this what you do when we give you a break from classes?โ€

Everyone turns toward the rotunda at the sound of Deveraโ€™s voice. The professor stands with her feet braced apart, flanked by Professors Emetterio and Kaori. All three look in desperate need of a bath and a good nightโ€™s rest.

Thank you, Dunne.ย I force the Archives door to Tairnโ€™s power shut and note the steam rising from my hand before the conduit dims.

โ€œSorrengail is right,โ€ Devera shouts. โ€œThere is every chance we will all meet Malek in the coming months, but you must decide if youโ€™d rather die fighting each other or facing our shared enemy.โ€ She rocks back on her heels. โ€œGo ahead and choose. Weโ€™ll wait.โ€

โ€œDie now or die later, whatโ€™s the difference?โ€ someone from Second Wing asks.

โ€œDie now, and the scribes will call your name in the morning.โ€ Emetterio shrugs. โ€œChoose to fight your common enemy, and thereโ€™s a chance youโ€™ll live to graduate. Personallyโ€โ€”he scratches his beardโ€”โ€œI like our odds. The last time a shadow and lightning wielder fought side by side, they managed to driveย the venin back into the Barrens for a few hundred years. Weโ€™ll figure out how to do it again.โ€

I fumble the conduit and nearly drop it. Xaden and I are the first of our signets to live simultaneously since the Great War?

Heads turn my way, and one by one, every weapon lowers.

โ€œYou do your dragonsโ€”and gryphonsโ€”proud.โ€ Devera nods. โ€œVacation is over. Your professors are returning in the next twenty-four hours, and if I were you, Iโ€™d concentrate on getting a good nightโ€™s sleep before Emetterio here decides you should run the Gauntlet just for fun. We are done waiting for the nobles. Battle Brief is at nine a.m. sharp, treaty or no treaty.โ€ She looks pointedly at our group. โ€œAnd that includesย everyย cadet, no matter what color leathers you prefer. Youโ€™re released from whatever it was you thought you were doing here.โ€

The cadets disperse, passing by our professors as the three walk our way, and then the winged ones take to the sky. I canโ€™t help but note that the cadets are still separated between Navarrians and Aretians. At least no oneโ€™s trying to kill each other.

We keep our fliersโ€™ backs toward the dais until the Navarrians are gone, and then our squad brings up the rear.

โ€œI can see it sometimes,โ€ Cat says, pulling up her hood as she walks ahead of me. โ€œWhy he chose you. Nice speech. Took you long enough to step in, though.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re welcome,โ€ I mutter to her back, but the tiniest of smiles curls my lips.

โ€œNever thought Iโ€™d yearn for a simple day of classes.โ€ Ridoc throws his arm over my shoulder as we walk. โ€œMaybe a good old session of Parapet.โ€

I spot Xaden off to the side of the rotunda steps with Lewellen, Brennan, and Mira, and my stomach flips. They must have news.

โ€œOur classmates trying to kill each other isnโ€™t exactly original,โ€ Sloane says, passing by as I slow at the tense look on Brennanโ€™s face.

Guess itโ€™s notย goodย news.

โ€œDid you really just stand there and watch all that happen?โ€ Rhi asks as our professors approach.

โ€œYes.โ€ Devera wipes off her flight goggles, then stretches the leather band behind her head. โ€œIt was bound to happen at some point, and at least this was a controlled environment,โ€ she finishes over her shoulder.

โ€œI feel so protected.โ€ Ridoc puts his hand over his heart. โ€œNurtured, even. Wouldnโ€™t you agree, Violet?โ€

โ€œYou pretty much described how Violet was raised,โ€ Dain says, coming from behind us with Aaric as the rest head inside with the remainder of the squad. He looks at me. โ€œThanks for stepping in. Thought she was going to torch me there for a second.โ€

โ€œThanks for coming without hesitation when I said we needed you.โ€ Our eyes meet, and for a second, it hits me how different things might have been if heโ€™d shown the same faith in me during my first year as he did today. Not different enough to change the way I feel about Xaden, though.

โ€œAlways will.โ€ He offers me a hint of a smile before turning toward the dormitory.

When I look over to Xaden, I find him watching, his scarred eyebrow rising as his gaze jumps to Dain before finding mine again.

My eyes narrow. Is thatโ€ฆ No, it canโ€™t be jealousy, can it?

Rhi glances at Ridoc and Aaric, motioning with her head. โ€œViolet, weโ€™ll catch up with you later.โ€

โ€œWe need to speak with you as well, Aaric,โ€ Brennan notes, looking like heโ€™s aged five years in the last few hours. Heโ€™s not exactly standing close to Mira, either, causing my heart to sink.

Ridocโ€™s arm slides off my shoulders. โ€œOh, come on. Why does Aaric get to stay? Heโ€™s a first-year.โ€

โ€œDo not make me drag you,โ€ Rhi warns, holding up a single finger, and Ridoc acquiesces with a sigh, moving forward and leaving the six of us on the rotunda steps.

โ€œLetโ€™s take this inside.โ€ Brennan surprises me by heading down the steps and cutting a diagonal path toward the academic wing.

Moving to Xadenโ€™s side, I study the stern lines of his face as we follow Brennan, the others close behind us. โ€œEverything all right?โ€ I ask quietly, feeling his shields locked firmly in place. โ€œAreย youย all right?โ€

โ€œGood speech.โ€ He takes my hand, lacing our fingers.

โ€œShe was going to kill Dain.โ€ My voice drops to a whisper. โ€œThey really do hate us.โ€

โ€œDoesnโ€™t change the fact that weโ€™re here. Especially now that weโ€™ve reached terms for the riot to stay.โ€ Xaden catches the door before it can close behind Brennan, then holds it as I walk through, his fingers slipping from mine.

โ€œThatโ€™s good, right?โ€ I glance his way as we enter the deserted sparring gym. โ€œAnd you didnโ€™t answer my question.โ€

โ€œTalk to your brother first.โ€ He folds his arms when we reach the edge of the first row of mats, where Brennan waits. As the others join us, we form a loose circle.

That doesnโ€™t bode well. Anxiety coils in my stomach like a snake poised to strike as I take in the older ridersโ€™ somber expressions across from us.

Aaric slides his hands into his pockets at my left. โ€œLet me guess. Halden complicated negotiations?โ€

I fuckingย blanch.

โ€œYour brother certainly didnโ€™t help,โ€ Lewellen notes, scratching the bristles along the underside of his jaw.

โ€œHaldenโ€™s here?โ€ I manage to ask.

โ€œRode in this morning with a company from the Western Guard.โ€ Aaric shoots me a knowing look, which I return with a quick glare.

โ€œGreat.โ€ His temper is the last thing we need at the negotiating table.

Mira studies Xaden and me intently, but she keeps quiet.

โ€œYour secret is still safe, by the way,โ€ Lewellen says to Aaric, โ€œthough you might consider putting your father out of his misery. He has half his personal guard searching for you.โ€

โ€œShows how effective they are, donโ€™t you think?โ€ Aaric grimaces sarcastically. โ€œSo do you carry news? Or were you just gathered to hear Violetโ€™s speech?โ€ His attention jumps from person to person, no doubt cataloging the tiniest details of every shift in expression as heโ€™s been raised to do. Heโ€™s always been the most observant of his brothers. โ€œShe was quite moving.โ€

โ€œWe heard.โ€ Brennan offers me a flash of a proud smile. โ€œAnd saw.โ€

โ€œSheโ€™d be a great politician,โ€ Aaric continues. โ€œOr a general, maybe? Definitely nobility.โ€

โ€œWith that speech? At least a duchess.โ€ Xaden shifts his weight, brushing his elbow against my shoulder.

I shake my head. โ€œNo thank you toโ€ฆany of that. I have no love for politics, nor am I good at dealing with the Senarium.โ€ I look around. โ€œOkay, someone needs to start talking.โ€

โ€œLieutenant Riorson?โ€ a rider with a messenger sash interrupts, calling out from the doorway.

โ€œBe right back.โ€ Xadenโ€™s hand skims my lower back as he answers the summons.

โ€œYour mission was discussed at the negotiating table today in hopes they would give us an extension,โ€ Brennan says, โ€œand given the participants at handโ€ฆโ€

That snake of anxiety strikes hard and true.

โ€œHalden,โ€ Aaric guesses, his emerald-green eyes narrowing slightly in speculation toward my brother. โ€œHaldenโ€™s going with her, isnโ€™t he?โ€

My jawย unhinges, then snaps shut at the apology filling Brennanโ€™s eyes. โ€œNo fucking way.โ€ I shake my head. โ€œYou cannot be serious.โ€ I refuse to evenย thinkย about it.

โ€œTheyโ€™re serious,โ€ Aaric says without looking in my direction. โ€œPoromiel would accept a Sorrengail without question, so if you need a royal capable of speaking for Navarre, they must think youโ€™re headed to the isle kingdoms or northward.โ€ He tilts his head, studying the older riders. โ€œThat about cover it?โ€

Iโ€™m going to be sick.

โ€œWhy are you ill?โ€ย Andarna asks.

โ€œHalden?โ€ย Tairn muses slowly, and I swear I can feel his nonexistent eyebrows rise.

โ€œSo, we kill him if he makes her uncomfortable,โ€ย Andarna suggests.ย โ€œProblem solved.โ€

โ€œYou cannot kill the heir to the throne.โ€ย Even though Iโ€™ve been tempted myself a time or two.

โ€œYou really are the wisest of them, arenโ€™t you?โ€ Lewellen huffs a sardonic laugh. โ€œOur kingdom would have benefitted fromย youย being the firstborn, Your Highness.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s Aaric,โ€ he corrects, folding his arms. โ€œIs that why you wanted me here? To see if Iโ€™d announce myself, since Halden wants to go gallivanting off on dangerous missions? Make everyone feel good and cozy that thereโ€™s still a spare?โ€

โ€œPerhaps.โ€ The duke smiles at Aaric.

โ€œAdmirable attempt, but Iโ€™m only here for my squad. Iโ€™ll dismantle the family business before I rejoin it,โ€ Aaric quips.

โ€œYour prince doesnโ€™t want to play.โ€ Mira arches a brow at Lewellen. โ€œNow, tell Violet the rest, or I will.โ€

The comment reminds me: โ€œAndarnaโ€™s demands?โ€

โ€œRight,โ€ Lewellen says as Xaden returns, still stern-faced but now holding a rolled parchment as he fills the space at my side. The duke pulls Andarnaโ€™s list from his pocket. โ€œYou already know point two is now in the hands of Captain Grady. But you won point three. The Senarium has agreed that all those who flew for Aretia will be welcomed back with a full pardon for their treason and sedition within the now-negotiated accord with Aretiaโ€โ€”he glances at Xadenโ€”โ€œwhich will be signed in the morning once the scribes finish drafting it. Personally, I think you scared the shit out of them by threatening to leave yesterday, Violet. Good job. Point four, Andarna will not submit for any examinationโ€”โ€

โ€œBecause that was never going to happen anyway,โ€ย she chimes in.

โ€œAnd five, she will be granted access to hunt in the kingโ€™s forest whenever she pleases.โ€

โ€œThat one was just for fun.โ€

โ€œYou skipped the fliers.โ€ I straighten my spine and look to my brother. โ€œKeeping them safe and our squads intact is first on the list.โ€ I narrow my eyes. We only have two days left.ย And we gave you the solution.

Brennan presses his lips into a flat line, and my stomach rolls.

โ€œThat particular matter didnโ€™t make it to Poromielโ€™s table.โ€ Lewellen folds Andarnaโ€™s list and puts it into the front pocket of his hunter green tunic. โ€œYour sister argued valiantly and displayed astonishing capability, but the Senarium voted six to one, and the safety of Navarreโ€™s borders is not to be tampered with.โ€

Mira crosses her arms.

Prickling heat rolls down Andarnaโ€™s bond, and my hands curl, my nails biting into my palms. โ€œWhat about the alliance?โ€ Without it, the deal with Tecarus falls apart.

โ€œItโ€™s failed,โ€ Lewellen announces unemotionally, as if reading from the death roll.

โ€œBecause the fliers arenโ€™t safe here.โ€ I bite out every word at my brother.

โ€œBecause treaties like this takeย time, and we wonโ€™t figure this out before their queenโ€™s deadline in two days.โ€ Brennan rubs his thumb along his chin. โ€œFlier cadets will be safe in Aretia while we still have wards, and hopefully Queen Maraya can force her nobles back to the table at a later date,โ€ Brennan promises, his shoulders sagging. โ€œPolitics are complicated.โ€

Fuck that.ย How canย ourย nobles let them walk away without an alliance, knowing we have the means to protect the fliers?

โ€œWe still have the means,โ€ย Andarna reminds me.

Right. Plan B: treason. Guess that path chooses itself.

โ€œWhen you put it that way.โ€ I force my shoulders to relax and my hands to fall peacefully at my sides. โ€œI guess itโ€™s back to Basgiath business as usual tomorrow, and I should prep for our missionโ€”or is research as out of my control as the team members?โ€

Miraโ€™s eyes narrow in my direction, like sheโ€™s the inntinnsic in the room and not Xaden.

โ€œEvery resource, including the royal library, will be made available to you,โ€ Brennan promises.

โ€œOh good, becauseย booksย will keep her safe.โ€ Mira shoots Brennan an icy look.

The right books will.

โ€œWell, as fun as this has been.โ€ Aaric nods at me, then departs without another word.

โ€œHeโ€™ll come around.โ€ Lewellen sighs, then turns to Xaden with a smile so proud it borders on teary. โ€œEnjoy your win, Xaden. Delaying the alliance is unfortunate, but we won. Your father would be proud.โ€

โ€œI highly doubt that.โ€ His tone is sharp.

What?ย I reach, but his shields are tighter than ever. Did he get his fatherโ€™s sword back? Why wouldnโ€™t he be happy about that?

โ€œWeโ€™ll leave you to tell her the good news. I really am sorry we couldnโ€™t make the alliance work.โ€ Brennan gives me an awkward, apologetic smile, then heads out, taking Lewellen and Mira with him.

I wait until the door shuts behind her before I turn to Xaden. โ€œWhat did you win?โ€

Every muscle in his body seems to tense even more, if thatโ€™s possible. โ€œI didnโ€™tย winย it. Didnโ€™t even ask for it. Iโ€™m the last personโ€ฆโ€ He shakes his head and stuffs the rolled orders into his breast pocket. โ€œLewellen and Lindell told them it was the price of keeping the riot here, and the Senarium gave in. Thatโ€™s how scared they are of losing our numbers. They actually agreed to give it back, and I wish they hadnโ€™t. Not now. Not when Iโ€™m likeโ€ฆthis.โ€ He points to his eyes as if they were still red, but I only see him. โ€œMy father wouldnโ€™t be proud. Heโ€™d be horrified.โ€ Every word is short. Clipped.

โ€œI donโ€™t believe that.โ€ Itโ€™s impossible not to be proud of him, not to love him.

โ€œYou didnโ€™t know him. There was only one thing in this world he loved more than me.โ€ He looks away, and I start to rethink my assumption about the sword.

โ€œWhat did the king give you?โ€ A blade wouldnโ€™t worry him like this.

โ€œIโ€™ve been trying to think of a way out of it for the last hour. The king sanctioned both Lindell and Lewellen for their roles in hiding Aretiaโ€”just like they predicted this morningโ€”so theyโ€™re not options. And I canโ€™t reject the agreement, or everyone will know something is wrong.โ€ His tortured gaze finds mine, and my heart clenches. โ€œThe only solution I can think of is you. Youโ€™ll be the first to sense when I lose the rest of what makes meโ€ฆme.โ€ Slowly, he tucks a windblown strand of my hair behind my ear.

โ€œYou wonโ€™t.โ€ I have enough faith in him for the both of us.

โ€œI will. This morning showed me itโ€™s just a matter of time and reason.โ€ He nods with a certainty that sours my stomach. โ€œItโ€™s not fair, and you might hate me for it later, but I need you to make me a promise.โ€ His warm hand cups the back of my neck as his eyes search mine. โ€œSwear youโ€™ll sound the alarm if I go too far, that youโ€™ll keep it safe, even if itโ€™s from me.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€”โ€ I start, but the gym door opens, and I look over my shoulder to see Garrick waving a rolled parchment.

โ€œTheย Earlย of Lewellen said youโ€™d be in here. Orders arenโ€™t optional, Riorson, even for nobility. We need to go.โ€

โ€œPromise me,โ€ Xaden says, stroking his thumb under my ear and completely ignoring his best friend.

โ€œYouโ€™re leaving?โ€ I swing my gaze back to Xadenโ€™s, realizing thatโ€™s why the messenger had tracked him down. โ€œNow?โ€

He leans in, blocking out the rest of the world. โ€œPromise me, Violet. Please.โ€

Heโ€™ll never go too far, never lose his soul, so I nod. โ€œI promise.โ€

Xadenโ€™s eyes slide shut for a heartbeat, and blatant relief shines from their depths when he opens them. โ€œThank you.โ€

โ€œI know you can hear me.โ€ Garrick raises his voice. โ€œLetโ€™sย go.โ€

โ€œI love you.โ€ Xaden kisses me hard and fast, and itโ€™s over before I can even process itโ€™s actually happened.

โ€œI love you, too.โ€ I grab his hand as he withdraws. โ€œTell me what the king gave you.โ€

He takes a deep breath. โ€œHe gave me back my title and the seat in the Senarium.โ€

Holy shit.ย My lips part.

โ€œNot just Aretia, eitherโ€ฆhe gave me Tyrrendor,โ€ Xaden says slowly, like he canโ€™t believe it, either.

And he doesnโ€™t want it. My chest clenches. โ€œXadenโ€”โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t wait up.โ€ He presses a kiss to the inside of my wrist, then strides toward Garrick. โ€œIโ€™ll be back by eight a.m. to sign that accord,โ€ he calls back over his shoulder. โ€œTry to stay out of trouble while Iโ€™m gone.โ€

โ€œBe careful.โ€ Heโ€™sย theย Duke of Tyrrendor. This is so much bigger than how I feel about him now. Thereโ€™s an entire province depending on him.

I need to find a cure, and that means saving the alliance tonightโ€ฆ

Even if it means Iโ€™ll be a traitor by morning.
