Chapter no 58

Onyx Storm (The Empyrean, #3)

Most cadets believe their ability to recite historical fact will usher them onto the adept path, but it is actually the ability to observe and recount it that separates the librarians from the scribes.

โ€”Colonel Daxtonโ€™s Guide to Excelling in the Scribe Quadrant

Tairn can fly to the nearest edge of the Cliffs of Dralor in two hours, but it does us no good to leave Sgaeyl, Cuir, and Marbh behind, so by the time we reach the ten-thousand-foot drop, weโ€™re cutting it close to Theophanieโ€™s deadline.

Gods, if we miss it, if weโ€™re too late and she kills Miraโ€”

My throat threatens to close.

โ€œWeโ€™ll make it,โ€ย Tairn promises as we descend the cliffs in a steep dive between the falls and the crowded Medaro Pass. It had been a treacherous, deadly climb in autumn, and we were cadets. I canโ€™t begin to imagine how civiliansโ€”howย childrenโ€”are making the ascent.

โ€œDo you agree that itโ€™s a trap?โ€ย The words spill out before I can stop them.

โ€œOf course,โ€ย he replies.ย โ€œBut you already know that. Otherwise, we would have discussed it over the last three and a half hours.โ€

Guilt wedges itself between my ribs as we plunge into a thick layer of fluffy white clouds.

โ€œDo not dishonor me with such emotions,โ€ย he lectures.

โ€œAnd how does Sgaeyl feel about me endangering Xaden?โ€ย I scan the clouds as best I can for the outline of wyvern, but the cover is thick and weโ€™re moving too fast to be thorough.

โ€œHad she not agreed, she would still be in Aretia, and your Dark One would be walking.โ€

Excellent point.ย โ€œTheophanie took Mira because of me. Iโ€™m the reason sheโ€™s going through this.โ€

โ€œYou are our lightning wielder, and while your life may not matter more than other ridersโ€™, your signet does. You are the weapon and will have to learn to accept the sacrifice of others in your name if you want to win this war.โ€

Nausea churns in my stomach.

โ€œAnd you think I should have accepted Miraโ€™s death as a sacrifice?โ€ย We burst through the clouds, and the field comes into startling view.

โ€œIf I did,ย Iย would still be in Aretia andย youย would be walking.โ€

My heart sinks as I survey the landscape. The eastern fields approaching Draithus are covered in hordes of gray wyvern, setting siege against a line of dragons and gryphons perched between the guard stands along the city walls. They outnumber us in a ratio I donโ€™t even want to calculate. For the first time, Iโ€™m relieved that Andarna chose to go. Brennan is brilliant, but this feels unwinnable.ย โ€œOur estimates were off.โ€

โ€œIt appears so.โ€

But none of them launch to attack as we descend, nor do they impede the thick line of evacuees streaming from the cityโ€™s western gate.

โ€œMolvic has been spotted along the cliffs,โ€ย Tain warns as he flares his wings, slowing our momentum.

Fucking Aaric.ย โ€œIf he gets himself killedโ€”โ€

โ€œHe was seen flying south, away from conflict.โ€ย He spits every word in disgust.

What in Amariโ€™s name could he be doing?ย โ€œItโ€™s not like Aaric to run away.โ€

โ€œNor Molvic.โ€ย Tairn levels out as we approach the northern field, where at last I spot a horde of a dozen wyvern waiting in a circle around Teine.

In. Out.ย I force myself to breathe. Itโ€™s unnatural to hold a dragonโ€ฆcaptive.

The wyvern are perched on heavy chains that loop around Teineโ€™s tail, bind his legs and his snout, and pin his wings to his thrashing body. Each line of metal is coated in his blood, and several of his scales litter the ground.

Theophanie stands in front of them, silver hair shining, holding one blade to Miraโ€™s throat and another against her ribs.

My grip tightens on the pommels, and I canโ€™t tell if itโ€™s Tairnโ€™s rage or my own stampeding through my veins, but it tramples every last ounce of my fear, my doubt, and my guilt until I am nothing but wrath.

How fuckingย dareย she.

โ€œShe dies for this,โ€ย Tairn demands, his impact rustling the green meadow grass as we land twenty feet in front of Theophanie, who welcomes us with a smile.

She hasnโ€™t drained the fieldโ€ฆyet, but she has beaten the shit out of my sister. The right side of Miraโ€™s face is purple and swollen, her throat carries a necklace of bruises, and blood drips from her left hand, but her leathers hide its origin. Theophanieโ€™s scarlet long-sleeved tunic and pants arenโ€™t helping with contrast, either.

โ€œAgreed. Can you carry Teine if he canโ€™t fly?โ€ย I unbuckle from my saddle as the others land on either side of Tairn.

โ€œNot without sinking my claws into him.โ€ย He growls low in his throat.ย โ€œSpend no more time on the ground than necessary.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll stick to the plan.โ€ย Leaving my bag strapped behind Tairn, I adjust the leather-capped quiver and holstered crossbow at my back, check to make sure my conduit is tucked safely in my pocket, then dismount.

All Theophanie has to do is set her hand to the ground, and weโ€™re all dead.

โ€œIโ€™m here, just like you wanted.โ€ I hold out my arms, and power rises within me, heating my flight-chilled skin. Out of the corner of my eye, I see Brennan approach from the left, while Xaden and Bodhi walk in at my right.

โ€œSo you are.โ€ The wind whips Theophanieโ€™s long, silver braid as her smile cracks her chapped lips, and my gaze catches on the pulsing veins at her temples and faded remnants of the tattoo on her forehead. โ€œAnd yet, you seem to have lost your irid. How inconvenient.โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ Mira garbles, and Theophanie tightens her gnarled grip on the blade, pressing it harder against Miraโ€™s throat. Another ounce of pressure and her skin will split.

โ€œShhh. Speak again, and Iโ€™ll spill your dragonโ€™s blood all over this field,โ€ Theophanie says into Miraโ€™s ear as the others reach me.

My sister stills as the men reach my sides.

โ€œLet them go.โ€ I will slaughter the dark wielder where she stands. Energy hums in my veins, ready for the first opportunity to strike.

โ€œStay calm,โ€ย Xaden says, shadows curling over the toes of his boots and drifting south as we start to walk closer.ย โ€œStay in control.โ€ย He glances toward the doomed city.

Keeping the promise I made to Brennan means not looking, so I donโ€™t.

โ€œThatโ€™s usually my line.โ€ย I keep my eyes off Mira, focusing solely on the dark wielder.

โ€œNot yet. And four on one hardly seems fair.โ€ Theophanie glances at Brennan, then Bodhi. โ€œI didnโ€™t ask for either of you to attend.โ€

โ€œI thought you requested brothers? Next time be more specific about whoโ€™s invited,โ€ I suggest.

โ€œAnd yet you didnโ€™t bring the brother he wanted.โ€ Theophanie sighs. โ€œBerwyn will be disappointed.โ€ A thin line of blood appears along the edge of her knife.

โ€œHeโ€™s on the way,โ€ I say quickly.

โ€œBerwyn.โ€ Xaden tenses, and his focus swings south toward the city again. Thatโ€™s where he needs to beโ€”in position to save as many people as possibleโ€”but heโ€™s made it clear he doesnโ€™t want to leave me.

โ€œYes. Hence the termย brother.โ€ Theophanie glances my way. โ€œI wonโ€™t make the mistakes with you Berwyn made with Jack. He spills his Sageโ€™s secrets too easily.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not turning.โ€ My hands curl into fists.

โ€œYou are,โ€ she states like itโ€™s certain. โ€œIn just a few minutes, in fact. Iโ€™m intrigued to see what the actual catalyst will be.โ€ Her eyes light up. โ€œSaving your sister? Defending your lover? The trite-yet-always-popular revenge? Iโ€™m betting on a combination of all three.โ€ Her head tilts, and she rests her cheek against the top of Miraโ€™s head. โ€œSpeaking of which, time is upโ€”โ€

My heart lurches, and a gust of wind blows from the north.

โ€œHeโ€™s here!โ€ Garrick shouts.

I glance left and find Chradh standing where there had only been empty space moments before, his foreclaw clutching a familiar runed armoire. They made it, but the knife still at Miraโ€™s throat makes it hard to feel any sort of relief.

โ€œShow him to me,โ€ Theophanie orders.

Xaden rolls his neck, and the shadows around his feet drift past Bodhiโ€™s.

Garrick dismounts, then walks to the Rybestad chest with slower steps than usual and pulls the key from his pocket. It only takes a few seconds for him to open the chestโ€™s doors.

โ€œThere he is.โ€ Theophanie smiles, but I donโ€™t risk taking my eyes off her to examine how Jack is doing, especially not when Mira looks like she might pass out at any second. โ€œJust one little matter of business to attend to, and then weโ€™ll begin.โ€

โ€œHe is emaciated and wan,โ€ย Tairn tells me.ย โ€œSuspended in air as the chest intends, and he appearsโ€ฆsedated. I can show you through my eyes if you preferโ€”โ€

โ€œDescription is perfect, thank you.โ€ย I lift my chin. โ€œBoth Jack and I are here. Our end of the deal is fulfilled, so let Mira and Teine go.โ€

Brennanโ€™s hands flex at his sides.

โ€œThat wasnโ€™t the deal.โ€ Theophanie tsks. โ€œI said weโ€™d let Draithus stand, not that your sister would live.โ€ Her mouth curves in a sadistic smile. โ€œFirst thing to learn about us is that weโ€™re careful with our words. And the second? We also lie.โ€

She draws the blade across Miraโ€™s neck and slits her throat.
