Chapter no 57

Onyx Storm (The Empyrean, #3)

But even harder than taking a life is doing nothing while one is extinguished beside you. Keep your eyes forward, Mira.

โ€”Page seventy-one, the Book of Brennan

โ€œWe fly for Draithus. Theyโ€™ll attack as soon as they get what they want.โ€

โ€œAnd leave Sorrengail to die?โ€

โ€œWho says sheโ€™s even still alive?โ€

The voices of arguing, armed riders blur as I stand between Xaden and Brennan near the center of the dais, staring at the updated map on the Assembly chamber wall.

โ€œThere are thousands coming up the pass out of the city. If Draithus falls, theyโ€™re all dead.โ€

โ€œWe have a six-dragon riot stationed thereโ€”โ€

โ€œTen now that the line has fallen back.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t forget the nightwing drift.โ€

โ€œAgainst hundreds of wyvern?โ€

โ€œAnd at least a dozen dark wielders.โ€

โ€œWhoever goes isnโ€™t coming back from that.โ€

โ€œThen you sendย us.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re not sending cadets into combat!โ€

โ€œIt was our dragons who woke us. End of debate. Weโ€™re going!โ€

I barely hear any of it. Only one thought matters: Theophanie is done waiting for me, and she has Mira.

She has myย sister.

And our last words were in anger.

Fear threatens to worm its way past the rage boiling in my blood, and I fight to deny it entry. Mira doesnโ€™t have time for my fear. Itโ€™s a four-hour flight to Draithus, and if we donโ€™t leave in the next half hour, weโ€™ll be too lateโ€”not just for Mira but for the thousands of civilians as well.

How did this happen? A harsh red line on the map spans from what had been the eastern front directly to Draithus. Theyโ€™ve surged in the last twenty-four hours, ignoring everything else along their path, concentrating on this one target when easier, comparable cities remain untouched.

โ€œNot all signets are equal. I know sheโ€™s a Maven, but is she more powerful than you?โ€ Brennan folds his arms at my right as the others continue to argue.

โ€œYes,โ€ I answer. Thereโ€™s no point lying.

โ€œWeโ€™ll be walking into a trap.โ€ His gaze locks on the flag representing Draithus.

โ€œFlying, and who said you were coming?โ€ I counter. The space between the flag and the Cliffs of Dralor seems impossibly small for so many people to flee, and the climb is hellacious. They wonโ€™t all make it.

โ€œSheโ€™s my sister, too,โ€ Brennan states.

He has a point.

Xaden stands silently in front of the throne, his arms crossed as he studies the field to the north of Draithus, whereย Theophanie has demanded we meet. โ€œWe donโ€™t have enough riders to retrieve Mira, defend Draithus, and protect the pass.โ€

โ€œNo.โ€ Brennan sighs and examines the map more closely. โ€œWeโ€™ll have to prioritize an objective. Maybe two.โ€

Xaden nods.

โ€œWe canโ€™t just leave people to die,โ€ I protest.

The arguments between cadets and officers grow louder, and the pit in my stomach deepens. I should be with my squad, but Iโ€™ll be damned if I stand patiently and wait for others to decide my sisterโ€™s fate.

โ€œWhat would you do if they were your citizens on the other side of the border?โ€ Cat yells across the room from where our squad stands in loose formation. โ€œOr are you thinking like true Navarrians now that youโ€™re tucked in safe behind your wards?โ€

A smart-ass captain snaps something back at Cat that I canโ€™t hear over the din, and Sloane charges. I nearly jump over the table, but Dain gets there first, hooking his arm around her waist and hauling her back as she swings. The second he sets her on her feet, those fists are aimed in his direction, and I wince as he lets two make contact before trapping her wrists and leaning in low. Whatever he says must register, because she gives a curt nod, then retorts with a glare and walks back into formation, where Rhi is waiting with what looks like a scathing lecture.

Dain lifts his brows at me, and I grimace in apology before he moves to Bodhiโ€™s side.

โ€œHow long are you going to let them fight?โ€ Brennan asks, glancing at Xaden.

โ€œUntil my tactician gives me a plan that doesnโ€™t make me choose between objectives,โ€ Xaden answers. โ€œThe volume of their delivery doesnโ€™t make their points any less valid.โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t guarantee two, let alone three.โ€ Brennanโ€™s mouth purses.

โ€œLive up to your reputation and try,โ€ Xaden orders.

Brennan curses, then looks over the room. โ€œI need Tavis and Kaori!โ€ he shouts. Both men quickly separate from the crowd and make their way up Brennanโ€™s side of the dais. โ€œHave you been to Draithus?โ€ he asks Kaori.

โ€œOnce.โ€ The professor nods.

โ€œCan you give me a roughly scaled projection of the territory?โ€

Kaori lifts his hands, and a three-dimensional projection of Draithus and its surrounding areas appears over the table. The room falls quiet as Brennan leans forward, bracing his palms on the table to study the image as Garrick points out where our current defenses stand. The gash on his head and black eye are both gone thanks to Brennan.

The city sits at the southwestern edge of an intermontane plateau that spans a couple dozen miles. Itโ€™s surrounded by peaks on every side and accessible only through a winding series of valleys, the western river that flows south to the Arctile Ocean, or airโ€”which Theophanie commands due to her signet. And if Garrickโ€™s reports are accurate, the eastern field is theirs, too.

โ€œWhatever calculations you make, just know that Iโ€™ll be going with Violet,โ€ Xaden says.

โ€œI figured,โ€ Brennan answers.

My chest tightens with enough pressure to crush a dragon.ย โ€œYouโ€™ll be risking your life.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s risked the second you cross the wards, and we both know youโ€™re going after Mira. Iโ€™d rather be at your side than hunting you down after you sneak out.โ€ย His jaw flexes.

โ€œTheophanie doesnโ€™t want to kill me, or she already would have.โ€ย I memorize the topography of the field, feeding the information to Tairn. Between the jagged peaks, lines of forest, and the row of vertical rock formations along the western edge, itโ€™s basically natureโ€™s own fighting pit.

โ€œThatโ€™s exactly what Iโ€™m afraid of,โ€ย Xaden replies as Felix and Professor Trissa walk in.ย โ€œThere are worse things than dying.โ€

โ€œIs now a good time to point out that Tyrrendor canโ€™t afford to lose her duke on what amounts to a death wish?โ€ Felix asks, heading to the front of the dais with Professor Trissa.

โ€œI have no intention of dying,โ€ Xaden replies. โ€œPanchek has already launched to request reinforcements.โ€

โ€œWhich we know Melgren wonโ€™t send. Apparently thatย lateย warning was actually anย earlyย warning for this,โ€ Trissa counters, keeping her voice level and glancing at me, then Brennan. โ€œIโ€™m sorry for the loss of your sister, but Melgren has already proclaimed this battle a defeat, and heโ€™s never been wrong.โ€

A lump the size of my conduit forms in my throat. Iโ€™m not giving up on Mira, on any of them. โ€œChoice determines our future. Melgrenโ€™s only seen the outcome of one path.โ€ I glance at Xaden. โ€œWhich couldnโ€™t have had three rebellion relics.โ€

โ€œCadets belong in formation, not battle planning,โ€ Trissa snaps at me.

My spine stiffens, and my hands grip the edge of the table.

โ€œShe stands at my side.โ€ Xadenโ€™s voice drops into that lethally calm wingleader tone, and he places his warm hand over mine. โ€œRemember that.โ€

The compliment and the pressure of it arenโ€™t lost on me.

โ€œStarting to understand the consort missive,โ€ Brennan mutters under his breath, then looks at the model from a different angle. โ€œWe lose if we only take the officers.โ€

โ€œAbsolutely no cadets.โ€ Felix shakes his head. โ€œNot after what happened last time. Weโ€™re still repairing the walls from when those two went rogue.โ€ He looks my way.

Xaden glances toward my squad, his gaze lingering on Imogen, then Sloane, then Bodhi.

โ€œMake a different choice, get a different outcome,โ€ Garrick suggests. โ€œTheyโ€™ll have to live with themselves, so let them make their choice, too. Gods know we did.โ€

โ€œOnly volunteers. First-years stay behind the wards,โ€ Xaden orders.

โ€œPut us where you need us,โ€ Bodhi calls out, then glances at Dain. โ€œWith the permission of our wingleader, of course.โ€

โ€œGiven,โ€ Dain agrees.

Rhi takes count of every hand in the air, which is all of them. โ€œSecond Squad stands ready.โ€

โ€œThis cannot be happening,โ€ Trissa argues.

โ€œIt is.โ€ Xadenโ€™s tone doesnโ€™t invite interpretation. โ€œThe Assembly wanted me in that chair, and now youโ€™ll deal with my decisions while in it.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re not ready.โ€ Felix shoots the insult my way.

โ€œEven if Draithus and fleeing civilians werenโ€™t under direct threat, sheโ€™s my sister. Iโ€™m going to do everything I can to rescue her.โ€ I lift my chin.

โ€œOurย sister,โ€ Brennan corrects, studying me with a tilted head. โ€œWhich means that dark wielder knows way more about us than we do her.โ€

Xaden looks toward the back of my squadโ€™s formation, where Bodhi stands with Dain. โ€œGarrick, tell meย exactlyย what her demand was. Why does she want Bodhi?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know.โ€ Garrick scratches the stubble along his chin. โ€œShe said to bring Violet and your brother, and theyโ€™ll let Draithus stand.โ€

Stand or live? Anca was standing when they left it, too.

Xaden tenses. โ€œShe said โ€˜brotherโ€™?โ€

Garrick nods. โ€œEveryone knows you were raised together.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s certainly the fastest way to wipe out Tyrrendorโ€™s ruling line,โ€ Trissa notes.

โ€œRight.โ€ Two furrows appear between Xadenโ€™s brows, and his mouth tenses.

โ€œWhat are you thinking?โ€ย I ask.

โ€œVenin donโ€™t care about succession.โ€

โ€œYou have another who calls you by the name,โ€ย Sgaeyl chimes in, her words sharper than her teeth.

โ€œAnotherโ€”โ€ย I frown. The only other person who would have qualified for that title was Liam.ย Wait.ย The very first time I met her, she didnโ€™t kill me, but she didnโ€™t achieve her rescue objective, either. My stomach hollows.ย โ€œShe wants Jack.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s my guess.โ€ย His gaze darts to Kaori, whoโ€™s solely focused on his projection, then jumps to Garrick. โ€œYou up for a little walk?โ€ he asks quietly.

Garrick glances at Kaori, then nods.

โ€œUse me,โ€ I whisper to Brennan so Xaden wonโ€™t hear. โ€œOnce I rescue Mira, Iโ€™ll station myself between the pass and Draithus. I can wield in both directions if wyvern get past me.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s it.โ€ Brennanโ€™s eyes slide shut. โ€œEveryone but the seven of us out.ย Now,โ€ he orders, his voice booming through the room. โ€œStay in the hallway for quick recall.โ€

โ€œWe donโ€™t have time for this,โ€ Felix argues as the crowd moves into the hallway.

โ€œYouโ€™re the variable Iโ€™m missing, and worse, you make Riorson one, too.โ€ Brennan swings his gaze to mine as the Assembly chamber empties.

I draw back. โ€œIโ€™m sorry?โ€

โ€œTread carefully,โ€ Xaden warns.

โ€œThat right there, for starters.โ€ Brennan stares at me while pointing at Xaden, and I donโ€™t think heโ€™s just talking about this discussion. He gestures to the model. โ€œViolet, pick one objective to win.โ€

โ€œPeople will die if we only choose one.โ€ My heart starts to pound.

โ€œYes.โ€ He nods. โ€œWelcome to leadership.โ€

โ€œWhy me?โ€ I stare at the model. Mira has to come first, but the thought of leaving civilians to be desiccated, our own riders and fliers to die with their bonded ones? Itโ€™s too much to fathom. Losing Liam was battle. Mom was her own sacrifice. Trager wasโ€ฆluck. Being responsible for the deaths of thousands?

โ€œBecause I donโ€™t think you can,โ€ Brennan answers gently. โ€œTheophanie knows youโ€™ll try to save everyone like you did in Resson, or at Dunneโ€™s temple, or Basgiath before Momโ€ฆโ€ He swallows. โ€œThatโ€™s why weโ€™ll fail. Because you will choose everyone over yourself, and he will choose you over everyone.โ€

My stomach hollows.

โ€œYouโ€™re not playing fair,โ€ Xaden replies, his voice sliding lower.

โ€œIn all the years Iโ€™ve known you, โ€˜fairโ€™ isnโ€™t exactly a word Iโ€™ve ever heard you argue,โ€ Brennan says, raising a single finger. โ€œProve me wrong, Violet, so we can go get our sister. The only way we walk out of this trap the dark wielder set for you is if you donโ€™t fall for it. One objective. One path.โ€ His raised brows drive the point home, the weight of his words landing squarely in my gut.

Tairn would choose without hesitation.

Andarna would try to save them all.

But sheโ€™s gone. Whatโ€™s the objective with the greatest impact? If I set Xaden asideโ€ฆ Draithus will only hold as long as we can defend it. The same goes for the pass. And if I rescue Mira, Theophanie willโ€”

No. This isnโ€™t about Mira. Sheโ€™s hunting me.

โ€œTheophanie.โ€ I take a deep, steadying breath. โ€œI guess Iโ€™d kill Theophanie.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m impressed. That wasย notย on my list.โ€ The table creaks as Brennan sits on its edge. โ€œAnd if Cadet Sorrengail is abducted while securing her objective?โ€

Shadows spread at Xadenโ€™s feet. โ€œBodhi will make an excellent duke.โ€

โ€œAt least one of you can be taught.โ€ Brennan rubs the scar on his palm. โ€œDo you trust your squad leader to hold a position this time?โ€ he asks me.

โ€œWith my life,โ€ I answer instantly.

โ€œAll right.โ€ Brennan nods. โ€œI have one idea.โ€ He looks at us all in turn. โ€œIโ€™ll unlock the armory. Trissa, we need you to open up that little cache you keep of runes and maorsite arrowheads. Xaden, we need you to trust Violet not to get herself killed.โ€ He doesnโ€™t wait for Xadenโ€™s response before staring me down. โ€œAnd above all else, we needย youย to understand that you cannot save everyone and you cannot stray from your orders.โ€

Iโ€™ll do whatever it takes to save Mira. โ€œFine.โ€
