If possible, hunt the enemy during the day. Their markings are so easily hidden by the shadows of night that it would not surprise me to find they walk among us.
โVenin, A Compendium by Captain Drake Cordella, the Nightwing Drift
Ridoc listens to the shortest possible version of the story before the others land, and I promise to tell him everything if he can just wait until we get some privacy as Mira dismounts. โWe have to tell them about the irids first,โ I finish in a hurried plea.
His mouth tenses and his brown eyes narrow on Xaden.
โAre the other four back yet?โ Mira asks as she walks into camp with Aaric, her pack slung over one shoulder.
โNot yet,โ Garrick answers from behind me. โBut we still have a couple of hours until itโs fully dark.โ
โPlease,โ I whisper to Ridoc as Mira drops her things near her bedroll.
โEverything all right?โ Miraโs brow furrows when no one answers, and her gaze flickers between the four of us before settling on me with an intense once-over that ends with her studying my eyes. โViolet?โ
My throat constricts. I donโt know what sheโll do if she learns the truth.
โThe irids are a bunch of assholes who rejected Andarna,โ Ridoc says. โSo, itโs been a rather shit day.โ He launches into the story, and my pulse slowly steadies.
โHowโs Andarna?โ Mira asks.
โDevastated.โ I glance down the beach, but she and Tairn havenโt returned yet. โI know we came in hopes the irids would help, or at least fire the wardstone, but she really just wanted to know her family.โ
Garrickโs jaw ticks, and Xaden folds his arms.
โThe others should be back soon,โ Ridoc says. โWhat do we do? Fly for Loysam tomorrow?โ
โThereโs no point.โ I look to Xaden, but he keeps quiet. โLoysam has guards but no army. We can establish a diplomatic tie, but they wonโt help us win a war.โ
โSo what do you want to do?โ Xaden asks, the ocean breeze ruffling his hair as he looks over at me.
Gods, he really is beautiful, and not just on the outside. Everything about himโhis loyalty, his intelligence, the softer edges no one else but me gets to seeโฆeven his casual ruthlessness holds me in thrall. And whatever parts are missing?ย Dead, according to the irids? Weโll live without them.
Heโs still whole to me. As long as we can keep him from channeling from the earth, find a way for him to control that craving, weโll be all right. We have to be.
โWe should go home.โ Saying the words brings a sense of finality, of failure that stabs hard and cuts deep. โWho knows whatโs happened in our absence.โ For all we know, the linesย could have fallen and Theophanie herself could be waiting in my room.
โCourt-martials for all,โ Mira quips sarcastically.
Garrick nods and stares out over the water. โTechnically, on the map, if you were to fly northeast for two days, youโd hit the Cliffs of Dralor.โ
โThe gryphons would absolutelyย loveย that.โ Ridoc scoffs. โCanโt you see Kiralair snuggled up in Molvicโs claw?โ
โOnly the larger dragons can fly two straight days,โ Xaden says. โTairn. Sgaeyl. Molvic, maybe.โ
โWe go through the isles,โ I decide. โItโs the safest route to get everyone homeโฆas long as we camp on a deserted coast when it comes to Hedotis. Pretty sure Iโm banned there.โ
After the others arrive and our situation has been explained, Ridoc shoots me a look that says heโs done waiting to chat.
Xaden and Garrick are less than thrilled when I take off with Ridoc into the woods under the guise of hunting for dinner. Taking the agate sound-shield rune Ridoc carries, we hike about five minutes uphill into the jungle, staying close enough to find our way back but far enough to assure privacy thanks to Aotromโs escort.
The Brown Swordtail isnโt just nosey; heโs pissed.
Iโm nauseous telling Ridoc the full story about Xaden, remembering the entire time that Ridoc was the slowest to forgive when I kept my secrets at the beginning of the year. By the time Iโm finished, the light has faded into dappled patches of color and heโs pacing in front of me, looking anywhere but in my direction.
โI thought we agreed to tell each other the truth.โ His hands curl.
โIt wasnโt my secret to tell.โ I lean against a tree and watch Ridocโs short treks back and forth in front of me. โI know thatโs a shitty apology, but Iโm not sorry for keeping Xaden safe.โ
โThatโsย notย an apology, Vi.โ He pauses in front of me, a million emotions crossing over his face too quickly to name.
Heโs right.
โIโm sorry I couldnโt tell you, but if anyone finds out, theyโll lock him up like Barlowe, or worseโkill him.โ I fold my arms.
He lifts his eyebrows and cranes his neck forward. โAnd thereโs not a single, tiny speck of you that thinks maybe theyย should?โ
โNo. Heโs not evil.โ I lift my chin.
โHeโs notย him, either,โ he counters. โThatโs why you stepped between us in Hedotis. Heโs not fully in control and you know it.โ
โAre any of us ever in full controlโโ I start.
โDonโt do that.โ He points his finger at me. โNot with me.โ
โHeโs not Barlowe. Not even remotely close. Heโs never hurt me. Heโs only ever channeled to save other people, first at Basgiath, then at a battle across the border, and then when Courtlyn tried to kill us in Deverelli.โ I leave out the slight discoloration on my headboard. Thatโs a line Iโm not crossing with Ridoc.
โHoly fuck, heโs channeledย threeย times?โ Ridocโs eyebrows fly upward. โAnd managed to do it on an isle without magic?โ
โI had a piece of alloy in my conduit.โ
โOh, well, good to know you can keep him fed like Barlowe if you needโโ He scoffs. โThatโs why youโve been keeping Barlowe alive. Holyย shit, Violet, do you have any respect for your own life? Or is it just Riorson weโre concerned with now?โ
โHeโsย neverย hurt me,โ I repeat. โAnd heโs still an initiate. He doesnโt need to beย fed.โ The word tastes like ash in my mouth. โAs long as he doesnโt do it again, heโll stay exactly how he is now.โ
โA dark wielder, just like the silver-haired one stalking you.โ Ridoc starts pacing again.
My head draws back. โHe isย nothingย like her.โ
โBonded to one of the most vicious dragons on the Continent,โ he continues, ignoring my defense. โThatโsโฆawesome.โ
โHe doesnโt control Sgaeyl.โ I watch as Ridoc pivots and starts the trek all over again. โIn fact, she barely speaks to him right now.โ
โI donโt blame her, either,โ Ridoc says after a pause, agreeing with Aotrom. โAnd sheโs kept this from the Empyreanโโ He stops to my right, then slowly turns to face me. โWho else knows?โ
โOther than Xaden and me? Garrick, Bodhi, and Imogen.โ
Ridoc blinks. โThatโs it? Just the five of you?โ
โAnd now you.โ
โWell, at least the club is exclusive,โ he says sarcastically, then shoves his hands into his hair. โAnd theyโre all loyal toย him.โ
โWellโฆyes.โ I shift my weight. โHeโs the one weโre trying to save.โ
He rolls his eyes at the canopy. โFuck me. How did we get here with the secrets again?โ His finger shoots up. โNever mind, I already knowโRiorson.ย Again.ย I sense a theme.โ
โBasgiath would have fallen if he hadnโt killed the dark wieldersโ Sage,โ I remind him. โWhat he did give usโgive my motherโwas time to imbue the wardstone. Weโd all be dead if he hadnโt channeled for more power. The Continent would have fallen if not for him.โ
โOnly to become the very thing weโre fighting.โ He shakes his head. โThe irony of it exists on so many levels, especially when you consider that heโs the fuckingย Dukeย of Tyrrendor now.โ His arms fall to his sides. โHe could tear our kingdomโour provinceโapart from within. He could deliver us to the venin on a silver platter. Barlowe was nothing. We have a dark wielder sitting in the Senarium.โ
Is that all he sees him as? Just another dark wielder?
โHeโs on our side. Fighting our battles.โ I push off the tree. โHe killed more veninย afterย the battle than any other rider, remember?โ
โHow can you be sure heโs not playing you?โ His brow furrows.
โBecause I know him!โ My voice rises.
โAll right.โ Ridoc nods excessively. โIโll play along. Letโs say heโs still eighty percent Xaden.โ
โNinety,โ I counter.
โEhh.โ He shrugs. โThere are four ranks to dark wielders, and your manโs already channeled three times. I think eighty percent is mathematically generous, but sure, weโll live in your delusion for the purpose of the hypothetical. How long do we have until heโs an asim? Until heโs physically unable to deny the call of a Sage?โ
โIf he doesnโt channelโโ
โThey always channel!โ Ice forms at his fingertips. โJust because I like to crack jokes doesnโt mean Iโm not serious about reading the same shit you do. There are no accounts of initiates just walking away from the power.โ
โThatโs why I have to find a cure.โ My voice breaks.
โThey just told us there isnโt one.โ His arm swings toward the beach.
โAnd Iโve had about five minutes to process that information.โ Anger and fear war for control of my emotions, and both bring my power to the surface, sizzling my skin. โEverything Iโve done over the last few months, from securing the deal with Tecarus for books to searching for Andarnaโs kind, has been in service to the Continent, but also to find a cure for him, and hearing from the most likely source that there isnโt one?โ I shake my head as the heat rises within me, growing exponentially with my panic. โI donโt know what to do with thatย yet. I donโt have all the answers, Ridoc. I just know that I have to find them whether theyโre in a forgotten book or some dark wielderโs head, because Iโve lost Liam and now Trager and myย motherย to this war, and Iโm not giving up on the man I love!โ
Power snaps within me and flares outward. Lightning slams into the tree behind Ridoc, and thunder booms instantly, shaking my bones.
โFuck!โ Ridoc shouts, covering his ears and whirling to face the tree.
My heart stutters as the trunk splits down the middle, and the halves waverโฆthen fall. I lift my fingers, summoning lesser magic to soften the crash, but the heavy pieces are no match for my skills in this area. The halves smack into the ground in a line before us, then erupt into flame.
โDamn it.โ Ridoc flings his hands outward, and a thin sheet of ice races along the halves in both directions. The flames sizzle and die. โNow Riorson isย reallyย going to kill me,โ Ridoc mutters, but the joke falls flat. He turns my way.
โThank you.โ I gesture to the embers, then sigh. โAnd Iโm sorry.โ
โFor which part?โ
โAll of it.โ The admission is a little stronger than a whisper.
He nods.
โI will save him.โ My throat tightens. โAnd not just because I canโt fathom living without him. Iโm selfish when it comes to loving him, and maybe a little self-destructive latelyโโ
โYou think?โ He gestures to the tree.
โโbut if I donโt save himโฆโ My voice drops. โIf I donโtย cureย him, and heโฆโ I canโt say it. โI keep serum in case of emergency, but Ridoc, we have to keep him on our side, or this war is already lost. There isnโt a rider alive capable of stopping him at full power now, let alone what he could become if he truly turns. And donโt say that I can, because the truth is that I wonโt. Evenย if I hone my signet to his level, which would take the years heโs had, I could no more hurt him than he could hurt me. He isโฆeverything to me.โ
Ridocโs shoulders dip. โSo whereโs the line? At what point is he too far gone for you to defend him?โ
My mouth opens then shuts. โThere isnโt one. Not one heโd actually cross.โ
โReally?โ He lifts his brows. โWhat if he hurts someone you love? Will that change your mind?โ
โHe wouldnโt.โ I shake my head. โHe hasnโt in all these months. He wonโt.โ
He clasps my shoulders. โNot good enough. Give me a real, logical line he has to cross for you to walk away, and Iโll keep the secret. Iโll help you scour every fucking book you can find. Iโm here for the Iโm-going-to-save-my-man-at-all-costs mantra and will be on your side in this horrifically dangerous situation if you can just acknowledge thereโs a breaking point. You can put all your faith in him as long as you leave a little logic for yourself.โ
โIโฆI canโt imagine not loving him.โ I bring my hands up to rest on his forearms.
โNever said you couldnโt love him.โ He squeezes my shoulders gently. โYou can still love someone after you let them go. But you have to tell me thereโs a line where youย willย let him go. Because if there isnโt one, itโs not just him weโre going to lose, Vi.โ
My chest tightens. โI would neverโโ
โWould you channel to save him? Or is that the line?โ
I swallow hard, remembering that breath of a second in the wardstone chamber where my power hadnโt been enough to imbue the stone.
โIf it makes it easier, then pick a line where I can turn him in,โ Ridoc whispers. โTell me now, when you think thereโs no chanceย it will ever happen, so if he ever gets there, the decision isnโt on your shoulders.โ
Every muscle in my body tenses.
โHow about if he hurts Tairn or Andarna?โ Ridoc suggests. โYou have to help me here, Vi, or Iโm walking straight to the only person I know will put your life above everyone elseโs on that beach.โ
Mira.
I try to look at the situation from Ridocโs perspective, and itโs anything but pretty. โFine. Hypothetically, heโd have to kill another rider without cause or hurt civilians. Hurt my friends, my dragons. Hurtโฆme,โ I end in a whisper. โIf he hurts me, then heโs not him anymore.โ
Ridoc nods, then touches his forehead to mine. โAll right. Then there it is.โ
โThere it is,โ I repeat.
His hands fall away, and we start back toward camp. โStop keeping shit to yourself,โ he demands. โI donโt want to have this fight again. The four of us are stronger together than we are apart. Donโt fuck with that, even for Riorson. If youโre too afraid to tell Rhi, Sawyer, or me about something youโre doing because you know weโre going to lose our shit, then either you shouldnโt be doing it or you deserve to have shit lost on you.โ
โNoted.โ I sigh. โI miss them.โ
โMe too.โ He slings his arm around my shoulders. โRhi gives better lectures.โ
โYou did pretty well.โ A smile tugs at my mouth as we veer left around a giant tree the diameter of Tairnโs leg.
And find Xaden on the other side, standing with one ankle crossed over the other, his arms folded as he leans his shoulder against the trunk.
Ridocโs hand flexes on my shoulder, but he doesnโt let go as we abruptly stop.
Xaden arches his scarred brow, taking note.
โQuite the conundrum,โ Ridoc says. โYou see, if I drop my hand, it looks like weโve been caught doing something we shouldnโt. Which we havenโt. But if I leave it here, Iโm not sure you wonโt go all blank-face on me in a fit of rage andโโ He drags his left hand across his neck.
โNot helping,โ I tell him.
โI also donโt want you to think that just because youโre scary, Iโm scaredย ofย you,โ Ridoc adds. โWhich Iโm not.โ
โYou are. What did you decide?โ Xaden asks, his face a perfect mask of boredom.
โYouโre not going to threaten to kill me?โ Ridoc counters.
โI donโt make empty threats.โ
I reach out mentally, but Xadenโs shields are still locked tight.
Ridoc tilts his head. โMeaning you wouldnโt threaten before you killed me? Or you wouldnโt actually kill me?โ
Xaden half shrugs. โYou pick.โ
โStop it.โ I look straight at Xaden and his gaze flickers to mine, warming slightly.
โShe tells Rhiannon and Sawyer,โ Ridoc demands, then pauses, considering. โAnd Jesinia.โ
My heart practically stops. โHave you lost your mind?โ
โIs that all?โ Xaden asks, and I canโt tell if heโs being a sarcastic ass or a serious one.
โIโd prefer Mira and Brennan, too, but we can start with the first three,โ Ridoc states, looking at Xaden. โEveryone youโve told values your life over hersโโ
โThatโs not true,โ I argue.
โEveryone who knows has told Violet to run as far and as fast as she can,โ Xaden says. โMyself included.โ
โGood to know.โ Ridoc shrugs. โRhi. Sawyer. Jesinia. Thatโs my only condition for keeping your secret.โ
โThat is not what we discussed,โ I hiss up at him.
โWe discussedย ourย terms,โ Ridoc says, then looks back at Xaden. โThis is between us. Jesinia needs to know what sheโs actually researching in case thereโs a way to slow your progression. Sawyer, Rhi, and I are the only ones who can be with Violet during every class, and our dorm rooms are right next to hers. Sheโs more than capable of protecting herself, but extra eyes donโt hurt, considering what will come for her.โ
Xaden tenses.
โYeah, you know exactly what Iโm talking about.โ Ridoc nods.
My forehead crinkles. โWell, I donโt.โ
โIf he progresses and turns fullyโโ Ridoc starts.
โWhen,โ Xaden corrects him. โDenial and I donโt keep company.โ
Ridocโs eyebrows rise. โAll right then. When he turns fully, or when someone with the wrong rank realizes what heโs become, theyโll have to kill him for the very reasons youโve already mentioned, Vi.โ
โWhat does thatโฆโ My stomach hollows as I follow his train of thought to its logical conclusion, then refills immediately with scalding anger. I drag my gaze to Xadenโs. โKilling me is the easiest way to killย you.โ Just like my first year.
โI wonโt let that happen.โ Xadenโs jaw clenches.
โWeย wonโt let that happen,โ Ridoc corrects. โYouโll be off doing evil shit wherever evil shit gets done.โ
My lips part.
โRhi. Sawyer. Jesinia,โ Ridoc repeats.
โNot Aetos?โ Xaden questions. โDain specifically.โ
โAbsolutely not,โ I interject. โHeโll kill you.โ
โHe could try,โ Xaden replies. โThe attempt would certainly make things awkward.โ
โIโm with Violet on this one,โ Ridoc chimes in. โWhile Iโm proud of how far Aetos has come in the rule-bendingย department, heโs not ready to graduate to this particular level. Rhi. Sawyer. Jesinia.โ
โDone,โ Xaden answers. โBut letโs be clear. I donโt care who she tells when it comes to her safety.โ
โGood.โ Ridoc nods, then rocks back on his heels and takes a deep breath. โOh, and just soย weโreย clear, that strike up there wasnโtโโhe gestures between usโโyou know. Us.โ He flinches. โI mean, it was us because I pissed her off, but it wasnโt usโฆus, if you know what Iโm saying.โ
I fight to keep from rolling my eyes.
โWell aware,โ Xaden replies. โFirst because I trust Violet, and secondโโhe glances at Ridoc in a dismissive once-overโโit wasnโt a big enough strike.โ
Seriously?ย I scoff.
โHuh.โ Ridoc tilts his head as if deciding something, then shakes it. โNope. You and I are not back to dick jokes yet. Not that we were ever there. Iโm still pissed.โ
โYou should be.โ Xaden pushes off the tree and walks toward us. โAnd Iโm making sure Violetโs capable of killing me when the time comes. If itโs between her and me, I choose her. Kill the other guy I become.โ
My eyes narrow on the beautiful asshole Iโve foolishly given my heart to. โItโs not going to come to that.โ
โHoly shit. Is that noble? Is that twisted? I canโt decide.โ Ridoc pats me on the shoulder, then starts back toward camp. โIโve never been happier to be single. You two have some serious issues.โ
โGarrick handled theย huntingย that you were supposed to be doing,โ Xaden calls out as we leave the trees.
Ridoc throws a thumbs-up as he walks down the hill.
Xaden studies my face, looking at me like he has to memorize every detail in this exact moment.
I step toward him and he retreats, shaking his head once.
My heart sinks. โYouโre going to put some space between us over the abomination comment, arenโt you?โ
He flinches, which is as good as confirmation for me.
โYouโre notโโ I start.
โThe other two irids stayed like they hadnโt made up their minds yet,โ he interrupts. โAnd I think you had them because you didnโt know how young Andarna was at Threshing.โ His jaw pops and he slides right back into that bored, unbothered mask he loves so well. โThen they saw me. Iโm pretty fucking sure that this entire mission weโve risked everything for just failed because of what I am. Because Iโm here with you.โ
โThatโs not fair,โ I whisper.
โBut itโs true.โ Shadows scatter around the edges of his boots, and he looks down toward the beach. โIโveย barelyย made it a month without channeling beyond Sgaeyl.โ He shakes his head. โHad it just been you and Ridoc, or you and Dain, or you andโฆanyone else besides me on that beach, thereโs every chance youโd be on your way to whatever isle theyโve claimed, that Andarna would have a chance to know her kind, that theyโd agree to come back and fire the Aretian wardstone and save my city, save my entire province.โ He drags his gaze back to mine. โSo yeah, I think the abomination commentโand what it representsโrequires taking a moment of space for us both to consider the undeniable fact that I am the worst possible thing for this mission, for my province, and for you.โ
My heart hurts for him, for how guilty he feels over something he canโt control.
โAll right.โ I fold my arms across my chest and debate whether to fight or comfort him, then decide to go a different route. โFacts are considered. I donโt need the moment. You would have been on this mission regardless of our status because of Tairn and Sgaeyl. Itโs ridiculous that they passed judgment on you without even hearing you speak, but thatโs a statement onย their character, not yours. And if you need some space to sort that out in your mind, fine.โ I tilt my head at him. โBut it doesnโt change a single thing about the way I love you.โ
His hands flex.
I turn away from him and start back toward camp. โLet me know when youโre done brooding and weโll see how big my next strike is. Until then, weโre flying home tomorrow.โ
โข โข โข
The gryphons are exhausted, and it takes us ten days to reach Deverelli, where we spend an extra day fixing Andarnaโs harness when a piece of metal snaps.
Xaden keeps his distance the whole damned time.
Andarna is barely speaking.
Cat is heartbreakingly silent to the point that Iย wishย sheโd take a verbal jab or two.
And Iโm about to break under the weight of failure.
We use the day to chart our path over Poromiel, choosing a route that brings us ashore between Cordyn and Draithus in order to minimize our chances of encountering dark wielders. By the time we launch for the Continent, Miraโs asked me at least a dozen times if Iโm all right, and though Dain has the annoying habit of continuously measuring how far Xaden and I sit apart with his eyes before meeting my gaze, he smartly keeps his mouth shut.
I scan our surroundings for venin constantly during the flight, too scared to sleep in the saddle. Every glint of sun off a lake makes my stomach lurch, and every distant thunderstorm has me gripping the pommels. Logically, I know thereโs no chance Theophanie is aware weโre beyond the wards, available for her to pick off at will, but she shouldnโt have known Iโd be in Anca, either. Either our flight plan pays off or Theophanieย chooses not to attack, and though we fly over patches of drained land, we make it to the wards without so much as a patrol of wyvern intercepting us.
The ease of it only serves to make me more anxious.
We spend a night under the stars just within the wards to evade the arrest for court-martial we all know is coming, and fly into Basgiath three and a half weeks from the day we left.
Thereโs no sense of victory as I unload Tairnโs saddlebags on the flight field, not even with having secured an army to come to our aid. The overwhelming failure of losing the irids feels like mold growing on my tongue, souring everything I drink and eat, infecting my words and the very breath in my lungs. The disappointment festers and spreads until I feel wholly, completely rancid as I dismount onto the muddy field.
Andarna flew straight to the Vale. She didnโt even speak as she disappeared over the ridge. Her sorrow hurts most of all.
โViolet!โ
I turn and am immediately devoured by Rhiannonโs hug. Her arms close tight around me, and I drop the pack to return the squeeze. Maybe itโs the sound of Kaori yelling at cadets across the field, or the scent of Rhiโs hair, or the simple fact that weโre back, yet not home, but the enormity of what weโve lost immediately pricks my eyes and clogs my throat. โI really missed you. How did you know we were here?โ
โFeirge told me you were headed in, so we ran out of dinner. Iโm so glad to see you.โ Rhi pulls back with a watery smile. โAre you all right?โ
I open and shut my mouth, unsure of how to answer the question.
โRhi!โ Ridoc slams into us from the side, wrapping us both in his arms, two weeks of beard growth scratching the side of my face. โFuck, did we need you on that trip. Violet was out ofย control. She kicked a queenโs ass and poisoned Xadenโs momย andย all three Hedotic heads of state, but secured us an army.โ
Rhi huffs a laugh as he sways us back and forth. โAnd what did you do?โ
โNot much. Put out a couple of fires, punched a cook.โ He lets me go, then yanks Sawyer into the embrace when he walks over, leaning slightly on a cane. โThis is good. This is right.โ
โGlad youโre home, guys,โ Sawyer says, his face squished down next to mine thanks to Ridoc.
โMe too.โ I relax into the hug.
โThere they are! Get over here!โ Ridoc shouts, still in the embrace.
Maren laughs and runs to my other side, working her way in, but Cat just sighs as she walks over.
โNo exceptions,โ Ridoc declares, then tugs Cat into the circle between him and Sawyer. โSweet second-years, together again.โ He lets us go, but we stay circled up.
Rhiโs gaze jumps from person to person like sheโs counting, and her smile falters.
โWe lost Trager,โ I tell her softly.
โWhat?โ Rhi recoils, her face stricken.
โHow?โ Sawyerโs shoulders fall.
โZehyllna,โ Cat answers, then clears her throat. โArrow to the heart. But we got an army out of it, soโโ Her voice breaks and she clears her throat again.
โIโm so sorry,โ Rhi says, her gaze swinging from Maren to Cat.
โWe are, too,โ Maren whispers.
โAnd we failed.โ I say it out loud for the first time, looking Sawyer, then Rhi straight in the eyes. โWe found the irids, and they wonโt come. We failed.โ
โShit.โ Rhiโs face falls entirely.
โThatโs disappointing to hear, given the current political climate.โ
We break apart and turn toward General Aetos, who stands a respectable distance from Tairn, glowering at us. He doesnโt even glance at Dain as the others make their way over.
Xaden pauses between Garrick and Drake, and our gazes collide for a heartbeat before we both focus on General Aetos.ย Court-martial coming in threeโฆtwoโฆ
โWe will discuss your punishment for disobeying direct orders later.โ General Aetos glances at Drake. โItโs too bad you were born on the wrong side of the family.โ His gaze snaps to Cat. โThe good news is that youโre one step closer to your throne.โ
Cat blanches. โSyrena?โ
My stomach plummets, and I spot Mira white-knuckling the strap of her rucksack.
โIs that your sister?โ Aetos asks, reaching into the pocket of his uniform and walking toward us.
โYes,โ Maren answers so Cat doesnโt have to.
โAh. Right. The infamous flier.โ Aetos retrieves a missive and hands it to me without really answering Catย orย Maren. โThis perplexing read came for you about an hour ago. Looking forward to discussing it during your debrief.โ
I clasp the parchment, noting the broken seal. โIs Syrena Cordella alive?โ Heโs cruel to drag it out like this.
โLast I heard, sheโs fine.โ Aetos glances meaningfully at the paper.
Thank you, Amari.
Cat sways, taking in a deep breath, and I unfold the already opened missive. โWhat happened?โ she asks.
My skin chills as the blood runs from my face at the sight ofย herย handwriting.
Violetโ
I do hope you had a marvelous time on your journey, though your riot looked a little haggard when you flew over Pavis. I do wonder why you went to so much effort when I have the one thing you seek above all else. Do enjoy the time you have with your friends until our next rendezvous. Donโt worry, Iโm making all the arrangements.
โT
I crumple the parchment on reflex, and my gaze jumps to Xaden.
โWhat is it?โย He tilts his head.
โTheophanie.โย Itโs a struggle to draw a full breath.ย โShe knew we were gone. She saw us fly over Pavis and somehow delivered this here before we arrived.โ
His mouth tightens.ย โShe canโt get to you here.โ
โAnd yet she did.โย I shove the paper into my pocket and notice General Aetos watching me like a hawk.
โIs my uncle all right?โ Catโs voice rises. โJust tell us already.โ
Tecarus. Ohย shit.
โWhile you were out doing gods know what on the isles for three weeks,โ Aetos says, his eyes hardening, โSuniva fell to dark wielders.โ
Maren gasps, and dread hangs on the momentary silence.
โQueen Maraya is dead.โ
