Chapter no 43

Onyx Storm (The Empyrean, #3)

If possible, hunt the enemy during the day. Their markings are so easily hidden by the shadows of night that it would not surprise me to find they walk among us.

โ€”Venin, A Compendium by Captain Drake Cordella, the Nightwing Drift

Ridoc listens to the shortest possible version of the story before the others land, and I promise to tell him everything if he can just wait until we get some privacy as Mira dismounts. โ€œWe have to tell them about the irids first,โ€ I finish in a hurried plea.

His mouth tenses and his brown eyes narrow on Xaden.

โ€œAre the other four back yet?โ€ Mira asks as she walks into camp with Aaric, her pack slung over one shoulder.

โ€œNot yet,โ€ Garrick answers from behind me. โ€œBut we still have a couple of hours until itโ€™s fully dark.โ€

โ€œPlease,โ€ I whisper to Ridoc as Mira drops her things near her bedroll.

โ€œEverything all right?โ€ Miraโ€™s brow furrows when no one answers, and her gaze flickers between the four of us before settling on me with an intense once-over that ends with her studying my eyes. โ€œViolet?โ€

My throat constricts. I donโ€™t know what sheโ€™ll do if she learns the truth.

โ€œThe irids are a bunch of assholes who rejected Andarna,โ€ Ridoc says. โ€œSo, itโ€™s been a rather shit day.โ€ He launches into the story, and my pulse slowly steadies.

โ€œHowโ€™s Andarna?โ€ Mira asks.

โ€œDevastated.โ€ I glance down the beach, but she and Tairn havenโ€™t returned yet. โ€œI know we came in hopes the irids would help, or at least fire the wardstone, but she really just wanted to know her family.โ€

Garrickโ€™s jaw ticks, and Xaden folds his arms.

โ€œThe others should be back soon,โ€ Ridoc says. โ€œWhat do we do? Fly for Loysam tomorrow?โ€

โ€œThereโ€™s no point.โ€ I look to Xaden, but he keeps quiet. โ€œLoysam has guards but no army. We can establish a diplomatic tie, but they wonโ€™t help us win a war.โ€

โ€œSo what do you want to do?โ€ Xaden asks, the ocean breeze ruffling his hair as he looks over at me.

Gods, he really is beautiful, and not just on the outside. Everything about himโ€”his loyalty, his intelligence, the softer edges no one else but me gets to seeโ€ฆeven his casual ruthlessness holds me in thrall. And whatever parts are missing?ย Dead, according to the irids? Weโ€™ll live without them.

Heโ€™s still whole to me. As long as we can keep him from channeling from the earth, find a way for him to control that craving, weโ€™ll be all right. We have to be.

โ€œWe should go home.โ€ Saying the words brings a sense of finality, of failure that stabs hard and cuts deep. โ€œWho knows whatโ€™s happened in our absence.โ€ For all we know, the linesย could have fallen and Theophanie herself could be waiting in my room.

โ€œCourt-martials for all,โ€ Mira quips sarcastically.

Garrick nods and stares out over the water. โ€œTechnically, on the map, if you were to fly northeast for two days, youโ€™d hit the Cliffs of Dralor.โ€

โ€œThe gryphons would absolutelyย loveย that.โ€ Ridoc scoffs. โ€œCanโ€™t you see Kiralair snuggled up in Molvicโ€™s claw?โ€

โ€œOnly the larger dragons can fly two straight days,โ€ Xaden says. โ€œTairn. Sgaeyl. Molvic, maybe.โ€

โ€œWe go through the isles,โ€ I decide. โ€œItโ€™s the safest route to get everyone homeโ€ฆas long as we camp on a deserted coast when it comes to Hedotis. Pretty sure Iโ€™m banned there.โ€

After the others arrive and our situation has been explained, Ridoc shoots me a look that says heโ€™s done waiting to chat.

Xaden and Garrick are less than thrilled when I take off with Ridoc into the woods under the guise of hunting for dinner. Taking the agate sound-shield rune Ridoc carries, we hike about five minutes uphill into the jungle, staying close enough to find our way back but far enough to assure privacy thanks to Aotromโ€™s escort.

The Brown Swordtail isnโ€™t just nosey; heโ€™s pissed.

Iโ€™m nauseous telling Ridoc the full story about Xaden, remembering the entire time that Ridoc was the slowest to forgive when I kept my secrets at the beginning of the year. By the time Iโ€™m finished, the light has faded into dappled patches of color and heโ€™s pacing in front of me, looking anywhere but in my direction.

โ€œI thought we agreed to tell each other the truth.โ€ His hands curl.

โ€œIt wasnโ€™t my secret to tell.โ€ I lean against a tree and watch Ridocโ€™s short treks back and forth in front of me. โ€œI know thatโ€™s a shitty apology, but Iโ€™m not sorry for keeping Xaden safe.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™sย notย an apology, Vi.โ€ He pauses in front of me, a million emotions crossing over his face too quickly to name.

Heโ€™s right.

โ€œIโ€™m sorry I couldnโ€™t tell you, but if anyone finds out, theyโ€™ll lock him up like Barlowe, or worseโ€”kill him.โ€ I fold my arms.

He lifts his eyebrows and cranes his neck forward. โ€œAnd thereโ€™s not a single, tiny speck of you that thinks maybe theyย should?โ€

โ€œNo. Heโ€™s not evil.โ€ I lift my chin.

โ€œHeโ€™s notย him, either,โ€ he counters. โ€œThatโ€™s why you stepped between us in Hedotis. Heโ€™s not fully in control and you know it.โ€

โ€œAre any of us ever in full controlโ€”โ€ I start.

โ€œDonโ€™t do that.โ€ He points his finger at me. โ€œNot with me.โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s not Barlowe. Not even remotely close. Heโ€™s never hurt me. Heโ€™s only ever channeled to save other people, first at Basgiath, then at a battle across the border, and then when Courtlyn tried to kill us in Deverelli.โ€ I leave out the slight discoloration on my headboard. Thatโ€™s a line Iโ€™m not crossing with Ridoc.

โ€œHoly fuck, heโ€™s channeledย threeย times?โ€ Ridocโ€™s eyebrows fly upward. โ€œAnd managed to do it on an isle without magic?โ€

โ€œI had a piece of alloy in my conduit.โ€

โ€œOh, well, good to know you can keep him fed like Barlowe if you needโ€”โ€ He scoffs. โ€œThatโ€™s why youโ€™ve been keeping Barlowe alive. Holyย shit, Violet, do you have any respect for your own life? Or is it just Riorson weโ€™re concerned with now?โ€

โ€œHeโ€™sย neverย hurt me,โ€ I repeat. โ€œAnd heโ€™s still an initiate. He doesnโ€™t need to beย fed.โ€ The word tastes like ash in my mouth. โ€œAs long as he doesnโ€™t do it again, heโ€™ll stay exactly how he is now.โ€

โ€œA dark wielder, just like the silver-haired one stalking you.โ€ Ridoc starts pacing again.

My head draws back. โ€œHe isย nothingย like her.โ€

โ€œBonded to one of the most vicious dragons on the Continent,โ€ he continues, ignoring my defense. โ€œThatโ€™sโ€ฆawesome.โ€

โ€œHe doesnโ€™t control Sgaeyl.โ€ I watch as Ridoc pivots and starts the trek all over again. โ€œIn fact, she barely speaks to him right now.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t blame her, either,โ€ Ridoc says after a pause, agreeing with Aotrom. โ€œAnd sheโ€™s kept this from the Empyreanโ€”โ€ He stops to my right, then slowly turns to face me. โ€œWho else knows?โ€

โ€œOther than Xaden and me? Garrick, Bodhi, and Imogen.โ€

Ridoc blinks. โ€œThatโ€™s it? Just the five of you?โ€

โ€œAnd now you.โ€

โ€œWell, at least the club is exclusive,โ€ he says sarcastically, then shoves his hands into his hair. โ€œAnd theyโ€™re all loyal toย him.โ€

โ€œWellโ€ฆyes.โ€ I shift my weight. โ€œHeโ€™s the one weโ€™re trying to save.โ€

He rolls his eyes at the canopy. โ€œFuck me. How did we get here with the secrets again?โ€ His finger shoots up. โ€œNever mind, I already knowโ€”Riorson.ย Again.ย I sense a theme.โ€

โ€œBasgiath would have fallen if he hadnโ€™t killed the dark wieldersโ€™ Sage,โ€ I remind him. โ€œWhat he did give usโ€”give my motherโ€”was time to imbue the wardstone. Weโ€™d all be dead if he hadnโ€™t channeled for more power. The Continent would have fallen if not for him.โ€

โ€œOnly to become the very thing weโ€™re fighting.โ€ He shakes his head. โ€œThe irony of it exists on so many levels, especially when you consider that heโ€™s the fuckingย Dukeย of Tyrrendor now.โ€ His arms fall to his sides. โ€œHe could tear our kingdomโ€”our provinceโ€”apart from within. He could deliver us to the venin on a silver platter. Barlowe was nothing. We have a dark wielder sitting in the Senarium.โ€

Is that all he sees him as? Just another dark wielder?

โ€œHeโ€™s on our side. Fighting our battles.โ€ I push off the tree. โ€œHe killed more veninย afterย the battle than any other rider, remember?โ€

โ€œHow can you be sure heโ€™s not playing you?โ€ His brow furrows.

โ€œBecause I know him!โ€ My voice rises.

โ€œAll right.โ€ Ridoc nods excessively. โ€œIโ€™ll play along. Letโ€™s say heโ€™s still eighty percent Xaden.โ€

โ€œNinety,โ€ I counter.

โ€œEhh.โ€ He shrugs. โ€œThere are four ranks to dark wielders, and your manโ€™s already channeled three times. I think eighty percent is mathematically generous, but sure, weโ€™ll live in your delusion for the purpose of the hypothetical. How long do we have until heโ€™s an asim? Until heโ€™s physically unable to deny the call of a Sage?โ€

โ€œIf he doesnโ€™t channelโ€”โ€

โ€œThey always channel!โ€ Ice forms at his fingertips. โ€œJust because I like to crack jokes doesnโ€™t mean Iโ€™m not serious about reading the same shit you do. There are no accounts of initiates just walking away from the power.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s why I have to find a cure.โ€ My voice breaks.

โ€œThey just told us there isnโ€™t one.โ€ His arm swings toward the beach.

โ€œAnd Iโ€™ve had about five minutes to process that information.โ€ Anger and fear war for control of my emotions, and both bring my power to the surface, sizzling my skin. โ€œEverything Iโ€™ve done over the last few months, from securing the deal with Tecarus for books to searching for Andarnaโ€™s kind, has been in service to the Continent, but also to find a cure for him, and hearing from the most likely source that there isnโ€™t one?โ€ I shake my head as the heat rises within me, growing exponentially with my panic. โ€œI donโ€™t know what to do with thatย yet. I donโ€™t have all the answers, Ridoc. I just know that I have to find them whether theyโ€™re in a forgotten book or some dark wielderโ€™s head, because Iโ€™ve lost Liam and now Trager and myย motherย to this war, and Iโ€™m not giving up on the man I love!โ€

Power snaps within me and flares outward. Lightning slams into the tree behind Ridoc, and thunder booms instantly, shaking my bones.

โ€œFuck!โ€ Ridoc shouts, covering his ears and whirling to face the tree.

My heart stutters as the trunk splits down the middle, and the halves waverโ€ฆthen fall. I lift my fingers, summoning lesser magic to soften the crash, but the heavy pieces are no match for my skills in this area. The halves smack into the ground in a line before us, then erupt into flame.

โ€œDamn it.โ€ Ridoc flings his hands outward, and a thin sheet of ice races along the halves in both directions. The flames sizzle and die. โ€œNow Riorson isย reallyย going to kill me,โ€ Ridoc mutters, but the joke falls flat. He turns my way.

โ€œThank you.โ€ I gesture to the embers, then sigh. โ€œAnd Iโ€™m sorry.โ€

โ€œFor which part?โ€

โ€œAll of it.โ€ The admission is a little stronger than a whisper.

He nods.

โ€œI will save him.โ€ My throat tightens. โ€œAnd not just because I canโ€™t fathom living without him. Iโ€™m selfish when it comes to loving him, and maybe a little self-destructive latelyโ€”โ€

โ€œYou think?โ€ He gestures to the tree.

โ€œโ€”but if I donโ€™t save himโ€ฆโ€ My voice drops. โ€œIf I donโ€™tย cureย him, and heโ€ฆโ€ I canโ€™t say it. โ€œI keep serum in case of emergency, but Ridoc, we have to keep him on our side, or this war is already lost. There isnโ€™t a rider alive capable of stopping him at full power now, let alone what he could become if he truly turns. And donโ€™t say that I can, because the truth is that I wonโ€™t. Evenย if I hone my signet to his level, which would take the years heโ€™s had, I could no more hurt him than he could hurt me. He isโ€ฆeverything to me.โ€

Ridocโ€™s shoulders dip. โ€œSo whereโ€™s the line? At what point is he too far gone for you to defend him?โ€

My mouth opens then shuts. โ€œThere isnโ€™t one. Not one heโ€™d actually cross.โ€

โ€œReally?โ€ He lifts his brows. โ€œWhat if he hurts someone you love? Will that change your mind?โ€

โ€œHe wouldnโ€™t.โ€ I shake my head. โ€œHe hasnโ€™t in all these months. He wonโ€™t.โ€

He clasps my shoulders. โ€œNot good enough. Give me a real, logical line he has to cross for you to walk away, and Iโ€™ll keep the secret. Iโ€™ll help you scour every fucking book you can find. Iโ€™m here for the Iโ€™m-going-to-save-my-man-at-all-costs mantra and will be on your side in this horrifically dangerous situation if you can just acknowledge thereโ€™s a breaking point. You can put all your faith in him as long as you leave a little logic for yourself.โ€

โ€œIโ€ฆI canโ€™t imagine not loving him.โ€ I bring my hands up to rest on his forearms.

โ€œNever said you couldnโ€™t love him.โ€ He squeezes my shoulders gently. โ€œYou can still love someone after you let them go. But you have to tell me thereโ€™s a line where youย willย let him go. Because if there isnโ€™t one, itโ€™s not just him weโ€™re going to lose, Vi.โ€

My chest tightens. โ€œI would neverโ€”โ€

โ€œWould you channel to save him? Or is that the line?โ€

I swallow hard, remembering that breath of a second in the wardstone chamber where my power hadnโ€™t been enough to imbue the stone.

โ€œIf it makes it easier, then pick a line where I can turn him in,โ€ Ridoc whispers. โ€œTell me now, when you think thereโ€™s no chanceย it will ever happen, so if he ever gets there, the decision isnโ€™t on your shoulders.โ€

Every muscle in my body tenses.

โ€œHow about if he hurts Tairn or Andarna?โ€ Ridoc suggests. โ€œYou have to help me here, Vi, or Iโ€™m walking straight to the only person I know will put your life above everyone elseโ€™s on that beach.โ€

Mira.

I try to look at the situation from Ridocโ€™s perspective, and itโ€™s anything but pretty. โ€œFine. Hypothetically, heโ€™d have to kill another rider without cause or hurt civilians. Hurt my friends, my dragons. Hurtโ€ฆme,โ€ I end in a whisper. โ€œIf he hurts me, then heโ€™s not him anymore.โ€

Ridoc nods, then touches his forehead to mine. โ€œAll right. Then there it is.โ€

โ€œThere it is,โ€ I repeat.

His hands fall away, and we start back toward camp. โ€œStop keeping shit to yourself,โ€ he demands. โ€œI donโ€™t want to have this fight again. The four of us are stronger together than we are apart. Donโ€™t fuck with that, even for Riorson. If youโ€™re too afraid to tell Rhi, Sawyer, or me about something youโ€™re doing because you know weโ€™re going to lose our shit, then either you shouldnโ€™t be doing it or you deserve to have shit lost on you.โ€

โ€œNoted.โ€ I sigh. โ€œI miss them.โ€

โ€œMe too.โ€ He slings his arm around my shoulders. โ€œRhi gives better lectures.โ€

โ€œYou did pretty well.โ€ A smile tugs at my mouth as we veer left around a giant tree the diameter of Tairnโ€™s leg.

And find Xaden on the other side, standing with one ankle crossed over the other, his arms folded as he leans his shoulder against the trunk.

Ridocโ€™s hand flexes on my shoulder, but he doesnโ€™t let go as we abruptly stop.

Xaden arches his scarred brow, taking note.

โ€œQuite the conundrum,โ€ Ridoc says. โ€œYou see, if I drop my hand, it looks like weโ€™ve been caught doing something we shouldnโ€™t. Which we havenโ€™t. But if I leave it here, Iโ€™m not sure you wonโ€™t go all blank-face on me in a fit of rage andโ€”โ€ He drags his left hand across his neck.

โ€œNot helping,โ€ I tell him.

โ€œI also donโ€™t want you to think that just because youโ€™re scary, Iโ€™m scaredย ofย you,โ€ Ridoc adds. โ€œWhich Iโ€™m not.โ€

โ€œYou are. What did you decide?โ€ Xaden asks, his face a perfect mask of boredom.

โ€œYouโ€™re not going to threaten to kill me?โ€ Ridoc counters.

โ€œI donโ€™t make empty threats.โ€

I reach out mentally, but Xadenโ€™s shields are still locked tight.

Ridoc tilts his head. โ€œMeaning you wouldnโ€™t threaten before you killed me? Or you wouldnโ€™t actually kill me?โ€

Xaden half shrugs. โ€œYou pick.โ€

โ€œStop it.โ€ I look straight at Xaden and his gaze flickers to mine, warming slightly.

โ€œShe tells Rhiannon and Sawyer,โ€ Ridoc demands, then pauses, considering. โ€œAnd Jesinia.โ€

My heart practically stops. โ€œHave you lost your mind?โ€

โ€œIs that all?โ€ Xaden asks, and I canโ€™t tell if heโ€™s being a sarcastic ass or a serious one.

โ€œIโ€™d prefer Mira and Brennan, too, but we can start with the first three,โ€ Ridoc states, looking at Xaden. โ€œEveryone youโ€™ve told values your life over hersโ€”โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not true,โ€ I argue.

โ€œEveryone who knows has told Violet to run as far and as fast as she can,โ€ Xaden says. โ€œMyself included.โ€

โ€œGood to know.โ€ Ridoc shrugs. โ€œRhi. Sawyer. Jesinia. Thatโ€™s my only condition for keeping your secret.โ€

โ€œThat is not what we discussed,โ€ I hiss up at him.

โ€œWe discussedย ourย terms,โ€ Ridoc says, then looks back at Xaden. โ€œThis is between us. Jesinia needs to know what sheโ€™s actually researching in case thereโ€™s a way to slow your progression. Sawyer, Rhi, and I are the only ones who can be with Violet during every class, and our dorm rooms are right next to hers. Sheโ€™s more than capable of protecting herself, but extra eyes donโ€™t hurt, considering what will come for her.โ€

Xaden tenses.

โ€œYeah, you know exactly what Iโ€™m talking about.โ€ Ridoc nods.

My forehead crinkles. โ€œWell, I donโ€™t.โ€

โ€œIf he progresses and turns fullyโ€”โ€ Ridoc starts.

โ€œWhen,โ€ Xaden corrects him. โ€œDenial and I donโ€™t keep company.โ€

Ridocโ€™s eyebrows rise. โ€œAll right then. When he turns fully, or when someone with the wrong rank realizes what heโ€™s become, theyโ€™ll have to kill him for the very reasons youโ€™ve already mentioned, Vi.โ€

โ€œWhat does thatโ€ฆโ€ My stomach hollows as I follow his train of thought to its logical conclusion, then refills immediately with scalding anger. I drag my gaze to Xadenโ€™s. โ€œKilling me is the easiest way to killย you.โ€ Just like my first year.

โ€œI wonโ€™t let that happen.โ€ Xadenโ€™s jaw clenches.

โ€œWeย wonโ€™t let that happen,โ€ Ridoc corrects. โ€œYouโ€™ll be off doing evil shit wherever evil shit gets done.โ€

My lips part.

โ€œRhi. Sawyer. Jesinia,โ€ Ridoc repeats.

โ€œNot Aetos?โ€ Xaden questions. โ€œDain specifically.โ€

โ€œAbsolutely not,โ€ I interject. โ€œHeโ€™ll kill you.โ€

โ€œHe could try,โ€ Xaden replies. โ€œThe attempt would certainly make things awkward.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m with Violet on this one,โ€ Ridoc chimes in. โ€œWhile Iโ€™m proud of how far Aetos has come in the rule-bendingย department, heโ€™s not ready to graduate to this particular level. Rhi. Sawyer. Jesinia.โ€

โ€œDone,โ€ Xaden answers. โ€œBut letโ€™s be clear. I donโ€™t care who she tells when it comes to her safety.โ€

โ€œGood.โ€ Ridoc nods, then rocks back on his heels and takes a deep breath. โ€œOh, and just soย weโ€™reย clear, that strike up there wasnโ€™tโ€โ€”he gestures between usโ€”โ€œyou know. Us.โ€ He flinches. โ€œI mean, it was us because I pissed her off, but it wasnโ€™t usโ€ฆus, if you know what Iโ€™m saying.โ€

I fight to keep from rolling my eyes.

โ€œWell aware,โ€ Xaden replies. โ€œFirst because I trust Violet, and secondโ€โ€”he glances at Ridoc in a dismissive once-overโ€”โ€œit wasnโ€™t a big enough strike.โ€

Seriously?ย I scoff.

โ€œHuh.โ€ Ridoc tilts his head as if deciding something, then shakes it. โ€œNope. You and I are not back to dick jokes yet. Not that we were ever there. Iโ€™m still pissed.โ€

โ€œYou should be.โ€ Xaden pushes off the tree and walks toward us. โ€œAnd Iโ€™m making sure Violetโ€™s capable of killing me when the time comes. If itโ€™s between her and me, I choose her. Kill the other guy I become.โ€

My eyes narrow on the beautiful asshole Iโ€™ve foolishly given my heart to. โ€œItโ€™s not going to come to that.โ€

โ€œHoly shit. Is that noble? Is that twisted? I canโ€™t decide.โ€ Ridoc pats me on the shoulder, then starts back toward camp. โ€œIโ€™ve never been happier to be single. You two have some serious issues.โ€

โ€œGarrick handled theย huntingย that you were supposed to be doing,โ€ Xaden calls out as we leave the trees.

Ridoc throws a thumbs-up as he walks down the hill.

Xaden studies my face, looking at me like he has to memorize every detail in this exact moment.

I step toward him and he retreats, shaking his head once.

My heart sinks. โ€œYouโ€™re going to put some space between us over the abomination comment, arenโ€™t you?โ€

He flinches, which is as good as confirmation for me.

โ€œYouโ€™re notโ€”โ€ I start.

โ€œThe other two irids stayed like they hadnโ€™t made up their minds yet,โ€ he interrupts. โ€œAnd I think you had them because you didnโ€™t know how young Andarna was at Threshing.โ€ His jaw pops and he slides right back into that bored, unbothered mask he loves so well. โ€œThen they saw me. Iโ€™m pretty fucking sure that this entire mission weโ€™ve risked everything for just failed because of what I am. Because Iโ€™m here with you.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not fair,โ€ I whisper.

โ€œBut itโ€™s true.โ€ Shadows scatter around the edges of his boots, and he looks down toward the beach. โ€œIโ€™veย barelyย made it a month without channeling beyond Sgaeyl.โ€ He shakes his head. โ€œHad it just been you and Ridoc, or you and Dain, or you andโ€ฆanyone else besides me on that beach, thereโ€™s every chance youโ€™d be on your way to whatever isle theyโ€™ve claimed, that Andarna would have a chance to know her kind, that theyโ€™d agree to come back and fire the Aretian wardstone and save my city, save my entire province.โ€ He drags his gaze back to mine. โ€œSo yeah, I think the abomination commentโ€”and what it representsโ€”requires taking a moment of space for us both to consider the undeniable fact that I am the worst possible thing for this mission, for my province, and for you.โ€

My heart hurts for him, for how guilty he feels over something he canโ€™t control.

โ€œAll right.โ€ I fold my arms across my chest and debate whether to fight or comfort him, then decide to go a different route. โ€œFacts are considered. I donโ€™t need the moment. You would have been on this mission regardless of our status because of Tairn and Sgaeyl. Itโ€™s ridiculous that they passed judgment on you without even hearing you speak, but thatโ€™s a statement onย their character, not yours. And if you need some space to sort that out in your mind, fine.โ€ I tilt my head at him. โ€œBut it doesnโ€™t change a single thing about the way I love you.โ€

His hands flex.

I turn away from him and start back toward camp. โ€œLet me know when youโ€™re done brooding and weโ€™ll see how big my next strike is. Until then, weโ€™re flying home tomorrow.โ€

โ€ข โ€ข โ€ข

The gryphons are exhausted, and it takes us ten days to reach Deverelli, where we spend an extra day fixing Andarnaโ€™s harness when a piece of metal snaps.

Xaden keeps his distance the whole damned time.

Andarna is barely speaking.

Cat is heartbreakingly silent to the point that Iย wishย sheโ€™d take a verbal jab or two.

And Iโ€™m about to break under the weight of failure.

We use the day to chart our path over Poromiel, choosing a route that brings us ashore between Cordyn and Draithus in order to minimize our chances of encountering dark wielders. By the time we launch for the Continent, Miraโ€™s asked me at least a dozen times if Iโ€™m all right, and though Dain has the annoying habit of continuously measuring how far Xaden and I sit apart with his eyes before meeting my gaze, he smartly keeps his mouth shut.

I scan our surroundings for venin constantly during the flight, too scared to sleep in the saddle. Every glint of sun off a lake makes my stomach lurch, and every distant thunderstorm has me gripping the pommels. Logically, I know thereโ€™s no chance Theophanie is aware weโ€™re beyond the wards, available for her to pick off at will, but she shouldnโ€™t have known Iโ€™d be in Anca, either. Either our flight plan pays off or Theophanieย chooses not to attack, and though we fly over patches of drained land, we make it to the wards without so much as a patrol of wyvern intercepting us.

The ease of it only serves to make me more anxious.

We spend a night under the stars just within the wards to evade the arrest for court-martial we all know is coming, and fly into Basgiath three and a half weeks from the day we left.

Thereโ€™s no sense of victory as I unload Tairnโ€™s saddlebags on the flight field, not even with having secured an army to come to our aid. The overwhelming failure of losing the irids feels like mold growing on my tongue, souring everything I drink and eat, infecting my words and the very breath in my lungs. The disappointment festers and spreads until I feel wholly, completely rancid as I dismount onto the muddy field.

Andarna flew straight to the Vale. She didnโ€™t even speak as she disappeared over the ridge. Her sorrow hurts most of all.

โ€œViolet!โ€

I turn and am immediately devoured by Rhiannonโ€™s hug. Her arms close tight around me, and I drop the pack to return the squeeze. Maybe itโ€™s the sound of Kaori yelling at cadets across the field, or the scent of Rhiโ€™s hair, or the simple fact that weโ€™re back, yet not home, but the enormity of what weโ€™ve lost immediately pricks my eyes and clogs my throat. โ€œI really missed you. How did you know we were here?โ€

โ€œFeirge told me you were headed in, so we ran out of dinner. Iโ€™m so glad to see you.โ€ Rhi pulls back with a watery smile. โ€œAre you all right?โ€

I open and shut my mouth, unsure of how to answer the question.

โ€œRhi!โ€ Ridoc slams into us from the side, wrapping us both in his arms, two weeks of beard growth scratching the side of my face. โ€œFuck, did we need you on that trip. Violet was out ofย control. She kicked a queenโ€™s ass and poisoned Xadenโ€™s momย andย all three Hedotic heads of state, but secured us an army.โ€

Rhi huffs a laugh as he sways us back and forth. โ€œAnd what did you do?โ€

โ€œNot much. Put out a couple of fires, punched a cook.โ€ He lets me go, then yanks Sawyer into the embrace when he walks over, leaning slightly on a cane. โ€œThis is good. This is right.โ€

โ€œGlad youโ€™re home, guys,โ€ Sawyer says, his face squished down next to mine thanks to Ridoc.

โ€œMe too.โ€ I relax into the hug.

โ€œThere they are! Get over here!โ€ Ridoc shouts, still in the embrace.

Maren laughs and runs to my other side, working her way in, but Cat just sighs as she walks over.

โ€œNo exceptions,โ€ Ridoc declares, then tugs Cat into the circle between him and Sawyer. โ€œSweet second-years, together again.โ€ He lets us go, but we stay circled up.

Rhiโ€™s gaze jumps from person to person like sheโ€™s counting, and her smile falters.

โ€œWe lost Trager,โ€ I tell her softly.

โ€œWhat?โ€ Rhi recoils, her face stricken.

โ€œHow?โ€ Sawyerโ€™s shoulders fall.

โ€œZehyllna,โ€ Cat answers, then clears her throat. โ€œArrow to the heart. But we got an army out of it, soโ€”โ€ Her voice breaks and she clears her throat again.

โ€œIโ€™m so sorry,โ€ Rhi says, her gaze swinging from Maren to Cat.

โ€œWe are, too,โ€ Maren whispers.

โ€œAnd we failed.โ€ I say it out loud for the first time, looking Sawyer, then Rhi straight in the eyes. โ€œWe found the irids, and they wonโ€™t come. We failed.โ€

โ€œShit.โ€ Rhiโ€™s face falls entirely.

โ€œThatโ€™s disappointing to hear, given the current political climate.โ€

We break apart and turn toward General Aetos, who stands a respectable distance from Tairn, glowering at us. He doesnโ€™t even glance at Dain as the others make their way over.

Xaden pauses between Garrick and Drake, and our gazes collide for a heartbeat before we both focus on General Aetos.ย Court-martial coming in threeโ€ฆtwoโ€ฆ

โ€œWe will discuss your punishment for disobeying direct orders later.โ€ General Aetos glances at Drake. โ€œItโ€™s too bad you were born on the wrong side of the family.โ€ His gaze snaps to Cat. โ€œThe good news is that youโ€™re one step closer to your throne.โ€

Cat blanches. โ€œSyrena?โ€

My stomach plummets, and I spot Mira white-knuckling the strap of her rucksack.

โ€œIs that your sister?โ€ Aetos asks, reaching into the pocket of his uniform and walking toward us.

โ€œYes,โ€ Maren answers so Cat doesnโ€™t have to.

โ€œAh. Right. The infamous flier.โ€ Aetos retrieves a missive and hands it to me without really answering Catย orย Maren. โ€œThis perplexing read came for you about an hour ago. Looking forward to discussing it during your debrief.โ€

I clasp the parchment, noting the broken seal. โ€œIs Syrena Cordella alive?โ€ Heโ€™s cruel to drag it out like this.

โ€œLast I heard, sheโ€™s fine.โ€ Aetos glances meaningfully at the paper.

Thank you, Amari.

Cat sways, taking in a deep breath, and I unfold the already opened missive. โ€œWhat happened?โ€ she asks.

My skin chills as the blood runs from my face at the sight ofย herย handwriting.

Violetโ€”

I do hope you had a marvelous time on your journey, though your riot looked a little haggard when you flew over Pavis. I do wonder why you went to so much effort when I have the one thing you seek above all else. Do enjoy the time you have with your friends until our next rendezvous. Donโ€™t worry, Iโ€™m making all the arrangements.

โ€”T

I crumple the parchment on reflex, and my gaze jumps to Xaden.

โ€œWhat is it?โ€ย He tilts his head.

โ€œTheophanie.โ€ย Itโ€™s a struggle to draw a full breath.ย โ€œShe knew we were gone. She saw us fly over Pavis and somehow delivered this here before we arrived.โ€

His mouth tightens.ย โ€œShe canโ€™t get to you here.โ€

โ€œAnd yet she did.โ€ย I shove the paper into my pocket and notice General Aetos watching me like a hawk.

โ€œIs my uncle all right?โ€ Catโ€™s voice rises. โ€œJust tell us already.โ€

Tecarus. Ohย shit.

โ€œWhile you were out doing gods know what on the isles for three weeks,โ€ Aetos says, his eyes hardening, โ€œSuniva fell to dark wielders.โ€

Maren gasps, and dread hangs on the momentary silence.

โ€œQueen Maraya is dead.โ€
