Chapter no 14

Onyx Storm (The Empyrean, #3)

Though fliers only wield lesser magics, in my vast experience with the Northern Wing, they are formidable opponents in both mindwork and hand-to-hand. Take heed, younger riders: do not unseat against them unless forced to do so.

โ€”Tactics part II, A Personal Memoir by Lieutenant Lyron Panchek

โ€œAbsolutely not,โ€ย Xaden responds before Kaori leads him away, but thereโ€™s a slight roaring in my ears as Devera goes over the changes to our academic schedule and how weโ€™ll be paired for Xadenโ€™s new class, which she labelsย Signet Sparring.

Weโ€™re dismissed a few minutes later.

Iโ€™m fine. This is fine. Iโ€™ll think about it later. For now I stay focused on the goal directly in front of me, who happens to be halfway down the hall by the time I file out of Battle Brief with the rest of my squad.

โ€œYou donโ€™t look happy,โ€ Rhi notices, shooting me a sideways glance. โ€œWhy? You two will get to see each other all the time now.โ€

โ€œSure.โ€ My nod is a little forced. โ€œEvery time we have class.โ€ I bounce up on my toes, but Iโ€™m still too short to see past the crowd of cadets. โ€œI need to catch up to Dain.โ€

โ€œDain? Xaden shows up and youโ€™re talking to Dain?โ€ Rhi puts the back of her hand to my forehead. โ€œJust making sure youโ€™re not running a fever.โ€

โ€œAfter that announcement, Iโ€™m not really sure I can handle seeing Xaden right now, to be honest,โ€ I tell her quietly so Cat doesnโ€™t hear. Gods, sheโ€™s going toย gloatย over this. โ€œAnd I havenโ€™t seen Dain in days. I need to ask himโ€ฆโ€ I lift my brows.

โ€œRight.โ€ She nods as we pass two third-year classrooms, then peers ahead. โ€œHeโ€™s in Professor Kaoriโ€™s office doorway, talking to Bodhi. You going to tell me whatโ€™s going on with Riorson?โ€

โ€œThanks. Article Eight, Section One, Code of Conduct.โ€ I speed ahead, weaving through the river of cadets.

โ€œOuch. Donโ€™t be late to flight tactics!โ€ she calls after me.

To my relief, Dain hasnโ€™t moved by the time I reach the deep arch of Kaoriโ€™s doorway and step out of the current so I donโ€™t hold anyone up or get trampled.

Dain glances my way, then gives me his full attention, leaning up against the closed door and making room for me. โ€œVi?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry to interrupt, but youโ€™ve been at midland posts for days and I need to talk to you.โ€ I adjust the straps of my pack on my sore shoulders. Imogen has been relentless with the workouts this week, and my solo wielding sessions are taking a toll on my arms, too.

โ€œYouโ€™re not interrupting,โ€ Dain assures me. โ€œWeโ€™re just figuring out the flight field scheduling issue.โ€

Bodhi glances between us. โ€œNeed some privacy?โ€

โ€œNot from you.โ€ I shake my head.

โ€œAh.โ€ He gestures to his spot, and I swap places with him as he puts his back to the crowd. โ€œThat should be a little quieter for you.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s going on?โ€ Dain asks, lowering his voice.

I push aside any lingering apprehension. This might be my only shot. โ€œI need your help, and I know itโ€™s asking a lot, so Iโ€™m just going to lay it out there and then give you some time to decide.โ€ The hall empties gradually behind Bodhi.

โ€œThat sounds ominous.โ€ Dain searches my eyes. โ€œAre you in trouble?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€ I shake my head. โ€œI need something my father left in my parentsโ€™ quarters before he died. Itโ€™s nothing that needed to be burned or anything like that.โ€

โ€œResearch?โ€ Dain guesses, his expression softening.

I nod. โ€œItโ€™sโ€ฆhidden, and the quarters of Basgiathโ€™s commanding general are warded so only their line, by blood or marriage, can pass through, and now that bloodline is no longer mine.โ€

โ€œRight.โ€ His throat works. โ€œYouโ€™d be better off asking my father yourself. Iโ€™m not exactly his favorite person at the moment.โ€ He blinks, quickly masking the pain that flashes through his eyes. โ€œHeโ€™s just a few rooms down with Panchek right now.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m more concerned that he might not give it to me,โ€ I say slowly. โ€œHe mentioned last year that he wanted it, and Iโ€™m scared heโ€™ll keep it for himself, or that he or Markham will redact the information.โ€

Dain folds his arms. โ€œSo you want me to help you steal it.โ€

โ€œYes.โ€ Thereโ€™s no point in lying.

โ€œNot sure he really considers me part of the bloodlineโ€”โ€ Dain starts, but then the door opens behind him.

โ€œWell, that didnโ€™t take you long,โ€ Kaori says with a laugh, then looks over his shoulder. โ€œI donโ€™t think theyโ€™re here for me.โ€ Heย turns back to us. โ€œMake it quick, cadets. He has a meeting to attend in about ten minutes. Now, if youโ€™ll excuse me?โ€

We part, and Professor Kaori heads into the empty hall.

โ€œProfessor Riorson.โ€ Dainโ€™s tone isnโ€™t exactly respectful as Xaden fills the doorway.

My pulse leaps and I drink in the sight of him, stubbled cheeks, full lips, and gorgeous eyes. Thereโ€™s no hint of red to be seen.

โ€œViolet.โ€ Xaden ignores Dain and his cousin, his voice sliding over my skin like velvet. โ€œA word in private?โ€

โ€œNot a good idea.โ€ I shake my head slowly.

โ€œIโ€™m certain Iโ€™ve had worse ones.โ€ He holds out his hand.

โ€œYouโ€™re now a professor.โ€ Clutching the straps of my pack keeps me from reaching for him. โ€œIโ€™m a cadet.โ€

โ€œAnd?โ€ Xaden glowers at me.

โ€œOh shit,โ€ Dain says quietly. โ€œArticle Eight, Section One of the Code of Conduct.โ€

โ€œWait. You two broke up?โ€ Bodhiโ€™s voice rises.

โ€œYes,โ€ I answer.

โ€œNo,โ€ Xaden says at the same time, glaring at his cousin, then jerking his gaze to mine. โ€œNo,โ€ he repeats.

โ€œI meanโ€ฆif youโ€™re our new professor, then the Code applies. At least for as long as you hold the position,โ€ Dain muses. โ€œAnd I canโ€™t think of a single piece of Codex that overrides it.โ€

โ€œNo one asked you, Aetos,โ€ Xaden warns.

โ€œDonโ€™t blame me. I didnโ€™t write the Code.โ€ Dain backs into the hall with his hands up. โ€œNor did I accept the job.โ€

Xaden tenses.

โ€œWell, I have class, so good luck handling this one.โ€ Bodhi hurries after Dain.

Xaden waits half a second before grabbing the right strap of my pack and tugging me into Kaoriโ€™s room. So much for getting to class on time.

He lets me go and closes the door behind us.

โ€œGarrick didnโ€™t come with you?โ€ As stalling tactics come, itโ€™s a lazy one, but itโ€™s all I have as I retreat toward Kaoriโ€™s desk, avoiding the two chairs sitting in front of it. The office is one of the bigger ones, boasting two arched windows and a built-in bookcase with tomes stacked haphazardly to fill every possible inch.

โ€œConsidering he was dangerously close to my side when I lost control, we decided the babysitting program wasnโ€™t as effective as weโ€™d hoped.โ€ Xaden leans against the wall to the left of the door, his shoulder resting along the frame of a painted rendering of the First Sixโ€™s dragons.

But not seven.

โ€œYouโ€™re here now, so it wonโ€™t happen again.โ€ I brace my palms on the desk and jump to sit on its edge. โ€œI made myself a promise that I would do anything to save you, to cure you, so if that means we canโ€™t beโ€”โ€

โ€œDo not finish that sentence.โ€ He walks my way, and my heartbeat increases with every step he takes. โ€œYouโ€™re already the deadliest here, so itโ€™s not like I have to worry about grading you fairly. This changes nothing.โ€

โ€œWe live by the Codexโ€”โ€ I try again.

โ€œI live byย you.ย When have I ever given a fuck about the Codex or the Code of Conduct?โ€ He cradles my face and leans down, resting his forehead against mine. โ€œI am yours and you are mine, and thereโ€™s no law or rule in this world or the next that will change that.โ€

My eyes slide shut, like that might stop my heart from falling even harder for this man. โ€œSo what do we do?โ€

โ€œKaori thinks we can get an exemption. I just have to ask Panchek here in a few minutes.โ€ His thumbs graze my cheeks, and I slowly open my eyes, clinging to the hope that he might be right. That it could just be that easy.

โ€œNo matter what, we have to keep you here. You were only on the border for a week.โ€ย And look what happened.ย I donโ€™t have to say what weโ€™re both thinking.

โ€œI know.โ€ He lifts his head. โ€œAnd the worst part is I donโ€™t even remember reaching for the source or taking the power during the battle. It was simplyย there. If Sgaeyl hadnโ€™tโ€ฆโ€ His chest rises with a deep breath. โ€œShe spoke to me for the first timeโ€”โ€˜yelledโ€™ is a more accurate termโ€”and I snapped out of it, but the damage was done. I let you down.โ€

โ€œYou didnโ€™t.โ€ I clasp his wrists. โ€œWeโ€™ll figure this out. And if Panchek agrees to the exemption, I have a few things I need to catch you up on.โ€

He nods. โ€œIโ€™ll meet you in your roomโ€”โ€

The door opens, and I drop my hands, but Xaden doesnโ€™t move an inch.

โ€œAh, Professor Riorson,โ€ Aetos says from the doorway. โ€œKaori mentioned you might be in here, so I thought Iโ€™d handle the awkward business of you inevitably asking for an exemption to the Code of Conduct so you donโ€™t embarrass yourself in front of Colonel Panchek.โ€

My stomach dips. I donโ€™t need Melgrenโ€™s signet to know this battle isnโ€™t going to go our way.

โ€œGeneral Aetos.โ€ Xadenโ€™s hands slide from my cheeks in a slow caress, and then he turns to face the commander. โ€œIโ€™m formally requesting an exemption in regard to Article Eight, Section One, on the grounds that this is a previously existing relationship and the post is temporary.โ€

โ€œDenied,โ€ Aetos responds without sparing a second. โ€œIโ€™ll obey Melgrenโ€™s order and give you the position, even though I think there are riders better suited for it, but make no mistake, Riorson, I donโ€™t want you here. Pardon or no pardon, title or not, I wonโ€™t forget that you murdered the vice commandant in cold blood a few short months ago and ripped this institution apart.ย Your attachment to Cadet Sorrengail gives me the perfect excuse to kick you off my campus, and I will joyfully take it should you break the Code of Conduct,ย Professor. It may be General Melgrenโ€™s army, but itโ€™s my school. Do you understand?โ€

Gods, I fucking hate him.

โ€œThat youโ€™re an asshole? Absolutely.โ€ Xaden holds up his finger. โ€œAnd insulting you isnโ€™t against the Code of Conduct. I checked.โ€

Aetos flushes scarlet and snaps a glare in my direction. โ€œFarewells are over. Get to class, cadet.โ€

โ€œNothing changes. We just do what weโ€™re best at,โ€ย Xaden says.

โ€œSteal half the quadrantโ€™s riot and run for Aretia?โ€ย I slide off the desk, anger stirring my power to a simmer.

โ€œNo, smart-ass. Sneak around. At least for now.โ€

โ€œFor now,โ€ย I agree as General Aetos clears the doorway just in time for me to pass through. โ€œJust so you know who to hate,โ€ I say over my shoulder once Iโ€™m in the hall, โ€œXaden didnโ€™t kill Varrish. I did.โ€

Aetos stiffens and his eyes bulge as Dain steps out of the shadowy archway directly across the hall.

โ€œCome on, Violet. Iโ€™ll walk you to class.โ€ Dain looks at his father like the man has abandoned his dragon to die on the battlefield.

We walk silently until we reach the stairwell.

โ€œThe blame isnโ€™t solely yours. You struck the final blow, but we both know I killed Varrish,โ€ Dain says quietly as we descend to the third floor. โ€œYou could have told him, maybe used the information to help you get that exemption.โ€

โ€œAnd how would that help you?โ€

โ€œOh, Iโ€™m beyond help when it comes to my father.โ€ He huffs out a miserable laugh. โ€œAnd my father is clearly justโ€ฆbeyond help in general.โ€

โ€œDain,โ€ I whisper, hating that he looks like how I felt about my mother last year.

โ€œHeโ€™ll be in Calldyr next weekend.โ€ Dain nods as if making a choice. โ€œWeโ€™ll get your fatherโ€™s research then.โ€

It feels like anything but a victory.

โ€ข โ€ข โ€ข

The next Monday, I contemplate slamming my head against the twelve-person table that fills what Mom had called the โ€œplanning chamberโ€ on the second floor of the administration building. It would probably be a better use of my time than listening to Captain Grady and Lieutenantโ€”shit, Iโ€™ve already forgotten his nameโ€”argue about possible locations to search in front of the map of the Continent that hangs between the two windows.

My favorite part of the map? The hand-drawn, shapeless blobs that are supposed to represent the isle kingdoms to the south and east. Itโ€™s taken me exactly three minutes of this โ€œmeetingโ€ to decide that no one knows what the fuck weโ€™re doing.

Jesinia has rolled her eyes twice from the left end of the table, where she sits with a stack of books, quill, and parchment, keeping record of the meeting and whoโ€™s now officially been chosen for the mission.

โ€œPlease tell me youโ€™re almost here,โ€ย I say to Xaden as the shadowy bond between us strengthens with proximity.

โ€œClimbing the stairs,โ€ย he replies.

โ€œNorthward is obviously the answer.โ€ Grady signs simultaneously as he speaks, just as everyone has since the beginning of the meeting, then scratches a beard that isnโ€™t as neatly trimmed as he usually keeps it.

โ€œYes, we should absolutely venture into undiscovered territory,โ€ Captain Anna Winshire mutters sarcastically in the seat to my right. Sheโ€™s a talkative infantry captain with strawberry-blond hair, quick brown eyes, and serrated blades strapped to both her shoulders, but other than the myriad of ribboned awards for valor sewn onto her uniform, I canโ€™t figure out why sheโ€™s been chosen for the squad.

In fact, I canโ€™t figure out whyย anyย of them have. There are at least three older riders Iโ€™ve just met for the first time sitting across from me, and the one I already knowโ€”Auraโ€”is as far away as possible on the right side, closest to the map. But at least Halden isnโ€™t here, and he wasnโ€™t on the draft roster, either, which is a relief. Maybe theyโ€™ve decided against a royal representative after all.

Gradyโ€™s still arguing with his team. โ€œNorth isโ€”โ€

The door swings open at my left, and Xaden steps in.

Every head turns in his direction, but mine whips fastest. The last four days have felt like an eternity. Being close to him without having the kind of access Iโ€™m used to is frustrating as hell. Iโ€™m constantly aware of where he is when his shields are down, and even when theyโ€™re up, I find myself looking around every corner in hopes thereโ€™s something more to the shadows.

With Xaden sleeping in the professorsโ€™ quarters, turns out that sneaking around isnโ€™t just hard, itโ€™s impossible. Thereโ€™s a Navarrian rider watching everywhere I go.

The library? Ewan Faber has one convenient eye on the squad.

The dormitory? Aura finds a sudden interest in late-night hall patrols.

Going to visit Sawyer? Caroline Ashton and her minions trail along behind.

โ€œThis is a closed meeting,โ€ Lieutenant Forgot-his-name says, drawing his dimpled chin back in indignation.

โ€œI forgive you for failing to invite me,โ€ Xaden replies, sinking into the chair on my left.

I bite back a smile. He might think heโ€™s changed, but that comment is undeniably him.

โ€œWeโ€™re not taking aย separatistโ€”โ€ the lieutenant starts to argue, his hands moving almost violently as he signs.

โ€œYou already are,โ€ I interrupt with a sweet smile.

Jesinia tucks her chin into her robes, and I know sheโ€™s muffling a laugh.

โ€œWe can waste time arguing,โ€ Xaden says, โ€œor we can just agree that Tairn isnโ€™t going anywhere without Sgaeyl and move on.โ€

Quill scratches across parchment as Jesinia quickly takes notes, but thereโ€™s a definite smirk on her mouth still.

Captain Gradyโ€™s jaw flexes, but I have to respect that itโ€™s his only outward display of annoyance. Anyone with a set of bars on their shoulders should have predicted this, but Iโ€™m curious to see how heโ€™ll handle it considering how illogically our squad has been formed. โ€œFine,โ€ he finally says. โ€œCadet Neilwart, please add his name to our roster.โ€ He glances down the table. โ€œEveryone here has been chosen for this mission because I trust them. Make your introductions if you havenโ€™t,โ€ he orders the others, then turns to look at the map.

โ€œCaptain Henson,โ€ the woman with tightly woven black braids to his right replies, nodding. โ€œAir wielder.โ€

โ€œLieutenant Pugh.โ€ The next man narrows his pale blue eyes. โ€œFarsight.โ€

โ€œLieutenant Foley.โ€ย Ah, thatโ€™s his name. โ€œAgrarian.โ€

โ€œCadet Beinhaven.โ€ Aura lifts her chin. โ€œFire wielder.โ€

โ€œLieutenant Winshire.โ€ Anna smiles. โ€œInfantry liaison.โ€

โ€œLieutenant Riorson,โ€ Xaden replies.ย โ€œItโ€™s like he pulled a list of the most common signets and started choosing names.โ€

โ€œAnd there are no fliers or Aretian riders.โ€ย I fiddle with my pen.ย โ€œDoesnโ€™t exactly speak to the spirit of alliance.โ€

โ€œWhy no shield signets?โ€ Xaden asks. โ€œClearly weโ€™ll be out beyond the wards, unless you think thereโ€™s an entire den hiding within Navarreโ€™s borders that the Empyrean doesnโ€™t know about.โ€

โ€œYou were able to hide one,โ€ Foley snaps.

โ€œThinking the Empyrean wasnโ€™t aware for six years tells me all I need to know about where your and your dragonโ€™s priorities are.โ€ Xaden shrugs.

โ€œStop,โ€ Grady orders. โ€œAnd Iโ€™ve asked General Tinery for a particular shield wielder. Just waiting on a response.โ€

Xadenโ€™s brow knits for a millisecond, just long enough to let me know heโ€™s digging around peopleโ€™s intentions. โ€œYou could just ask me. Mira Sorrengail is the only rider proven beyond the wards, and sheโ€™s stationed in Aretia.โ€

I grip the pen. Mira had been my first choice in this mission to begin withโ€ฆif theyโ€™d asked me.

โ€œWhich is the Southern Wing and clearly under the command of General Tinery.โ€ Pugh glowers at Xaden.

โ€œExcept for Tyrrendor,โ€ Xaden replies, โ€œwhich as of the Second Aretia Accord now falls to the reigning house.โ€ He cocks his head to the side. โ€œWell, really Ulices and Kylynn, but they answer to me.โ€

Quill rasping against parchment is the only sound as some jaws are picked up off the floor and others lock.

I sit back in my chair and fight the urge to smile.ย โ€œHave to say, the casual flex of power is pretty hot.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t,โ€ย he warns.ย โ€œIโ€™m barely keeping my hands to myself as it is. If you knew how often I think about sneaking into your roomโ€ฆโ€

My pulse quickens.

โ€œIs this what I can expect,ย Lieutenant Riorson?โ€ Grady asks, color rising in his neck. โ€œYou pulling title into military matters? Thereโ€™s a reason aristocrats donโ€™t wear black.โ€

โ€œHappens more often than you think,โ€ I mutter, signing it discreetly to my friend.

Jesinia lifts the quill and doesnโ€™t record my smart-ass remark, but she definitely fights off a laugh.

โ€œDepends on how those matters are handled,โ€ Xaden threatens, his hand motions sharpening as he signs and his tone slipping into that dangerous calm that makes the lieutenants across from us shift in their seats and my gaze flicker his way.

The hair rises on the back of my neck. Thereโ€™s a flash of somethingโ€ฆcold in his eyes, but itโ€™s gone with a single blink. Huh.

โ€œYou and I are going to have problems,โ€ Captain Grady warns.

โ€œProbably.โ€ Xaden nods.

Grady breathes deeply as the flush creeps to his jawline. โ€œAs we were saying. Weโ€™ve been given six months to find the seventh breed. The Senarium has ordered that we report back between searching potential sites to keep them informedโ€”โ€

โ€œWhat a fucking waste of time,โ€ย Xaden says.

โ€œโ€”which means selecting our first search areas within easy flight,โ€ Grady continues.

โ€œJust wait, it gets better.โ€ย I pick up my pen and roll it between my forefingers and thumb to keep myself busy.ย โ€œI miss your hands.โ€

โ€œSame.โ€ย He keeps his eyes on the map, but a band of shadow curls up my leg beneath the table and wraps around my upper thigh.ย โ€œAnd your mouth, especially if thatโ€™s all Iโ€™m allowing myself.โ€

Itโ€™s on the tip of my mental tongue to tell him he doesnโ€™t have to limit himself, but Iโ€™m sure drawing more power from the earthย on his last mission isnโ€™t exactly evoking confidence in his self-control.

โ€œAnd Iโ€™ve chosen to begin along the northward coastline,โ€ Captain Grady finishes.

Xadenโ€™s brows hit the ceiling.

โ€œTold you it got better.โ€

Captain Henson drums her fingers on the table. โ€œWhy?โ€

Grady clears his throat. โ€œBasing our operation at the coastline gives us access to magic. Plus, the Emerald Sea is largely unexploredโ€”โ€

โ€œBecause sailors donโ€™t return from the deepest waters,โ€ Henson retorts, then looks my way. โ€œWhere would your dragon like to search?โ€

โ€œCadet Sorrengail isnโ€™t in charge,โ€ Aura interrupts.

โ€œYouโ€™re only here because I chose not to kill you for going after my wingleader,โ€ I reply.ย โ€œThis is a mistake. The only people I trust in this room are you and Jesinia, and sheโ€™s reporting the missions after we return, not going on them.โ€

โ€œAgreed.โ€ย Shadows swirl along the base of the wall.ย โ€œMira should add some balance, but not enough.โ€

โ€œThe last known communication we have with any isle kingdom is Deverelli,โ€ I say into the awkward silence. โ€œFrom what Iโ€™ve read, the merchant isle trades in more than goods. If thereโ€™s information to be had there, we can buy it for the right price. We should search all possible avenues, not just the north.โ€

Jesinia subtly nods as she records what Iโ€™ve suggested.

Everyone across from us starts speaking at once.

โ€œTheyโ€™ll kill us if we go there.โ€

โ€œSplitting our forces weakens the squad.โ€

โ€œDragon-haters, all of them.โ€

โ€œIf the dragons were on the isles, one of them would have bragged.โ€

โ€œOr used them in an assault,โ€ย I mutter mentally.

โ€œWhat do you know?โ€ย Xaden asks, and the band of shadowย strokesย my inner thigh.

Fuck, itโ€™s hard to think when he does that.ย โ€œRecords of the second Krovlan uprising have been ripped out of General Cadaoโ€™s journal, and Jesinia thinks an officer hinted that an isle kingdom was involved hundreds of yearsย afterย we severed contact. General Aetos asked me about my fatherโ€™s research on the subject last yearโ€”โ€

โ€œFeathertails.โ€ย Xadenโ€™s jaw ticks.ย โ€œI vaguely remember him mentioning something about it on our way to the flight field.โ€

โ€œExactly. Dragons mentioned with isles tells me we should look south.โ€ย I watch the others descend into shouting, their hands flying as they sign, and Aura is the shrillest of them all. Pretty bold coming from a cadet.ย โ€œI donโ€™t know the contents of Dadโ€™s research, but I do remember him suddenly going secretive with it about six months before he died. If heโ€™d wanted Aetos or Markham to have it, he would have left the information in his Archives office.โ€

โ€œAs opposed to?โ€ย He glances my way as the shouting only grows.

โ€œItโ€™s in their quarters.โ€ย I wince.ย โ€œGeneral Aetosโ€™s quarters. Donโ€™t worry, Dainโ€™s agreed to help me find it.โ€

Xaden cracks his neck.ย โ€œโ€˜Donโ€™t worryโ€™ and โ€˜Dainโ€™ do not belong in the same sentence.โ€

โ€œSilence!โ€ Grady shouts, his complexion fully ruddy. โ€œAside from already provided logic, Deverelli requires too high a price for an audience. South is not an option,โ€ he says to me, then turns toward Captain Henson. โ€œAnd as for the Emerald Sea, perhaps dragons are the reason sailors donโ€™t return. Until further notice, assume we will fly northward in the next month. Prepare your supplies. This meeting is adjourned.โ€

Fuck. Every bone in my body says to fly south.

โ€œStay,โ€ย Xaden says.ย โ€œIโ€™d kill for thirty seconds with you.โ€

โ€œAbsolutely.โ€ย A freakingย hugย sounds great.

Xaden and I hang behind as everyone files out, even Jesinia, but Aura Beinhaven waits at the door like a nursemaid, her brow arched as I gather my things.

โ€œYes, Aura?โ€ I ask as I close my pack.

โ€œJust waiting to escort you back to the quadrant.โ€ She looks pointedly at Xaden. โ€œWouldnโ€™t want you getting in trouble or doing something Iโ€™d have to report to General Aetos, seeing as Grady chose me as yourย companionย and all.โ€

More like a fucking chaperone. โ€œDo you mean Panchek?โ€

She shakes her head. โ€œAetos made it clear to the wingleaders that the Code of Conduct is to be followed to the letter.โ€ Her eyes narrow. โ€œNaturally, weโ€™ve passed that order down through the chain of command. Turns out there are lots of us happy to make your life as miserable as possible.โ€

โ€œGreat.โ€ I force a smile and the shadow slips from my thigh as I walk past Xaden, keeping even my eyes to myself so she doesnโ€™t have anything to report.

โ€œWeโ€™ll get time,โ€ย he promises.

โ€œYouโ€™re safe here. Thatโ€™s all that matters.โ€

At least until we go northward.
