Though fliers only wield lesser magics, in my vast experience with the Northern Wing, they are formidable opponents in both mindwork and hand-to-hand. Take heed, younger riders: do not unseat against them unless forced to do so.
โTactics part II, A Personal Memoir by Lieutenant Lyron Panchek
โAbsolutely not,โย Xaden responds before Kaori leads him away, but thereโs a slight roaring in my ears as Devera goes over the changes to our academic schedule and how weโll be paired for Xadenโs new class, which she labelsย Signet Sparring.
Weโre dismissed a few minutes later.
Iโm fine. This is fine. Iโll think about it later. For now I stay focused on the goal directly in front of me, who happens to be halfway down the hall by the time I file out of Battle Brief with the rest of my squad.
โYou donโt look happy,โ Rhi notices, shooting me a sideways glance. โWhy? You two will get to see each other all the time now.โ
โSure.โ My nod is a little forced. โEvery time we have class.โ I bounce up on my toes, but Iโm still too short to see past the crowd of cadets. โI need to catch up to Dain.โ
โDain? Xaden shows up and youโre talking to Dain?โ Rhi puts the back of her hand to my forehead. โJust making sure youโre not running a fever.โ
โAfter that announcement, Iโm not really sure I can handle seeing Xaden right now, to be honest,โ I tell her quietly so Cat doesnโt hear. Gods, sheโs going toย gloatย over this. โAnd I havenโt seen Dain in days. I need to ask himโฆโ I lift my brows.
โRight.โ She nods as we pass two third-year classrooms, then peers ahead. โHeโs in Professor Kaoriโs office doorway, talking to Bodhi. You going to tell me whatโs going on with Riorson?โ
โThanks. Article Eight, Section One, Code of Conduct.โ I speed ahead, weaving through the river of cadets.
โOuch. Donโt be late to flight tactics!โ she calls after me.
To my relief, Dain hasnโt moved by the time I reach the deep arch of Kaoriโs doorway and step out of the current so I donโt hold anyone up or get trampled.
Dain glances my way, then gives me his full attention, leaning up against the closed door and making room for me. โVi?โ
โIโm sorry to interrupt, but youโve been at midland posts for days and I need to talk to you.โ I adjust the straps of my pack on my sore shoulders. Imogen has been relentless with the workouts this week, and my solo wielding sessions are taking a toll on my arms, too.
โYouโre not interrupting,โ Dain assures me. โWeโre just figuring out the flight field scheduling issue.โ
Bodhi glances between us. โNeed some privacy?โ
โNot from you.โ I shake my head.
โAh.โ He gestures to his spot, and I swap places with him as he puts his back to the crowd. โThat should be a little quieter for you.โ
โWhatโs going on?โ Dain asks, lowering his voice.
I push aside any lingering apprehension. This might be my only shot. โI need your help, and I know itโs asking a lot, so Iโm just going to lay it out there and then give you some time to decide.โ The hall empties gradually behind Bodhi.
โThat sounds ominous.โ Dain searches my eyes. โAre you in trouble?โ
โNo.โ I shake my head. โI need something my father left in my parentsโ quarters before he died. Itโs nothing that needed to be burned or anything like that.โ
โResearch?โ Dain guesses, his expression softening.
I nod. โItโsโฆhidden, and the quarters of Basgiathโs commanding general are warded so only their line, by blood or marriage, can pass through, and now that bloodline is no longer mine.โ
โRight.โ His throat works. โYouโd be better off asking my father yourself. Iโm not exactly his favorite person at the moment.โ He blinks, quickly masking the pain that flashes through his eyes. โHeโs just a few rooms down with Panchek right now.โ
โIโm more concerned that he might not give it to me,โ I say slowly. โHe mentioned last year that he wanted it, and Iโm scared heโll keep it for himself, or that he or Markham will redact the information.โ
Dain folds his arms. โSo you want me to help you steal it.โ
โYes.โ Thereโs no point in lying.
โNot sure he really considers me part of the bloodlineโโ Dain starts, but then the door opens behind him.
โWell, that didnโt take you long,โ Kaori says with a laugh, then looks over his shoulder. โI donโt think theyโre here for me.โ Heย turns back to us. โMake it quick, cadets. He has a meeting to attend in about ten minutes. Now, if youโll excuse me?โ
We part, and Professor Kaori heads into the empty hall.
โProfessor Riorson.โ Dainโs tone isnโt exactly respectful as Xaden fills the doorway.
My pulse leaps and I drink in the sight of him, stubbled cheeks, full lips, and gorgeous eyes. Thereโs no hint of red to be seen.
โViolet.โ Xaden ignores Dain and his cousin, his voice sliding over my skin like velvet. โA word in private?โ
โNot a good idea.โ I shake my head slowly.
โIโm certain Iโve had worse ones.โ He holds out his hand.
โYouโre now a professor.โ Clutching the straps of my pack keeps me from reaching for him. โIโm a cadet.โ
โAnd?โ Xaden glowers at me.
โOh shit,โ Dain says quietly. โArticle Eight, Section One of the Code of Conduct.โ
โWait. You two broke up?โ Bodhiโs voice rises.
โYes,โ I answer.
โNo,โ Xaden says at the same time, glaring at his cousin, then jerking his gaze to mine. โNo,โ he repeats.
โI meanโฆif youโre our new professor, then the Code applies. At least for as long as you hold the position,โ Dain muses. โAnd I canโt think of a single piece of Codex that overrides it.โ
โNo one asked you, Aetos,โ Xaden warns.
โDonโt blame me. I didnโt write the Code.โ Dain backs into the hall with his hands up. โNor did I accept the job.โ
Xaden tenses.
โWell, I have class, so good luck handling this one.โ Bodhi hurries after Dain.
Xaden waits half a second before grabbing the right strap of my pack and tugging me into Kaoriโs room. So much for getting to class on time.
He lets me go and closes the door behind us.
โGarrick didnโt come with you?โ As stalling tactics come, itโs a lazy one, but itโs all I have as I retreat toward Kaoriโs desk, avoiding the two chairs sitting in front of it. The office is one of the bigger ones, boasting two arched windows and a built-in bookcase with tomes stacked haphazardly to fill every possible inch.
โConsidering he was dangerously close to my side when I lost control, we decided the babysitting program wasnโt as effective as weโd hoped.โ Xaden leans against the wall to the left of the door, his shoulder resting along the frame of a painted rendering of the First Sixโs dragons.
But not seven.
โYouโre here now, so it wonโt happen again.โ I brace my palms on the desk and jump to sit on its edge. โI made myself a promise that I would do anything to save you, to cure you, so if that means we canโt beโโ
โDo not finish that sentence.โ He walks my way, and my heartbeat increases with every step he takes. โYouโre already the deadliest here, so itโs not like I have to worry about grading you fairly. This changes nothing.โ
โWe live by the Codexโโ I try again.
โI live byย you.ย When have I ever given a fuck about the Codex or the Code of Conduct?โ He cradles my face and leans down, resting his forehead against mine. โI am yours and you are mine, and thereโs no law or rule in this world or the next that will change that.โ
My eyes slide shut, like that might stop my heart from falling even harder for this man. โSo what do we do?โ
โKaori thinks we can get an exemption. I just have to ask Panchek here in a few minutes.โ His thumbs graze my cheeks, and I slowly open my eyes, clinging to the hope that he might be right. That it could just be that easy.
โNo matter what, we have to keep you here. You were only on the border for a week.โย And look what happened.ย I donโt have to say what weโre both thinking.
โI know.โ He lifts his head. โAnd the worst part is I donโt even remember reaching for the source or taking the power during the battle. It was simplyย there. If Sgaeyl hadnโtโฆโ His chest rises with a deep breath. โShe spoke to me for the first timeโโyelledโ is a more accurate termโand I snapped out of it, but the damage was done. I let you down.โ
โYou didnโt.โ I clasp his wrists. โWeโll figure this out. And if Panchek agrees to the exemption, I have a few things I need to catch you up on.โ
He nods. โIโll meet you in your roomโโ
The door opens, and I drop my hands, but Xaden doesnโt move an inch.
โAh, Professor Riorson,โ Aetos says from the doorway. โKaori mentioned you might be in here, so I thought Iโd handle the awkward business of you inevitably asking for an exemption to the Code of Conduct so you donโt embarrass yourself in front of Colonel Panchek.โ
My stomach dips. I donโt need Melgrenโs signet to know this battle isnโt going to go our way.
โGeneral Aetos.โ Xadenโs hands slide from my cheeks in a slow caress, and then he turns to face the commander. โIโm formally requesting an exemption in regard to Article Eight, Section One, on the grounds that this is a previously existing relationship and the post is temporary.โ
โDenied,โ Aetos responds without sparing a second. โIโll obey Melgrenโs order and give you the position, even though I think there are riders better suited for it, but make no mistake, Riorson, I donโt want you here. Pardon or no pardon, title or not, I wonโt forget that you murdered the vice commandant in cold blood a few short months ago and ripped this institution apart.ย Your attachment to Cadet Sorrengail gives me the perfect excuse to kick you off my campus, and I will joyfully take it should you break the Code of Conduct,ย Professor. It may be General Melgrenโs army, but itโs my school. Do you understand?โ
Gods, I fucking hate him.
โThat youโre an asshole? Absolutely.โ Xaden holds up his finger. โAnd insulting you isnโt against the Code of Conduct. I checked.โ
Aetos flushes scarlet and snaps a glare in my direction. โFarewells are over. Get to class, cadet.โ
โNothing changes. We just do what weโre best at,โย Xaden says.
โSteal half the quadrantโs riot and run for Aretia?โย I slide off the desk, anger stirring my power to a simmer.
โNo, smart-ass. Sneak around. At least for now.โ
โFor now,โย I agree as General Aetos clears the doorway just in time for me to pass through. โJust so you know who to hate,โ I say over my shoulder once Iโm in the hall, โXaden didnโt kill Varrish. I did.โ
Aetos stiffens and his eyes bulge as Dain steps out of the shadowy archway directly across the hall.
โCome on, Violet. Iโll walk you to class.โ Dain looks at his father like the man has abandoned his dragon to die on the battlefield.
We walk silently until we reach the stairwell.
โThe blame isnโt solely yours. You struck the final blow, but we both know I killed Varrish,โ Dain says quietly as we descend to the third floor. โYou could have told him, maybe used the information to help you get that exemption.โ
โAnd how would that help you?โ
โOh, Iโm beyond help when it comes to my father.โ He huffs out a miserable laugh. โAnd my father is clearly justโฆbeyond help in general.โ
โDain,โ I whisper, hating that he looks like how I felt about my mother last year.
โHeโll be in Calldyr next weekend.โ Dain nods as if making a choice. โWeโll get your fatherโs research then.โ
It feels like anything but a victory.
โข โข โข
The next Monday, I contemplate slamming my head against the twelve-person table that fills what Mom had called the โplanning chamberโ on the second floor of the administration building. It would probably be a better use of my time than listening to Captain Grady and Lieutenantโshit, Iโve already forgotten his nameโargue about possible locations to search in front of the map of the Continent that hangs between the two windows.
My favorite part of the map? The hand-drawn, shapeless blobs that are supposed to represent the isle kingdoms to the south and east. Itโs taken me exactly three minutes of this โmeetingโ to decide that no one knows what the fuck weโre doing.
Jesinia has rolled her eyes twice from the left end of the table, where she sits with a stack of books, quill, and parchment, keeping record of the meeting and whoโs now officially been chosen for the mission.
โPlease tell me youโre almost here,โย I say to Xaden as the shadowy bond between us strengthens with proximity.
โClimbing the stairs,โย he replies.
โNorthward is obviously the answer.โ Grady signs simultaneously as he speaks, just as everyone has since the beginning of the meeting, then scratches a beard that isnโt as neatly trimmed as he usually keeps it.
โYes, we should absolutely venture into undiscovered territory,โ Captain Anna Winshire mutters sarcastically in the seat to my right. Sheโs a talkative infantry captain with strawberry-blond hair, quick brown eyes, and serrated blades strapped to both her shoulders, but other than the myriad of ribboned awards for valor sewn onto her uniform, I canโt figure out why sheโs been chosen for the squad.
In fact, I canโt figure out whyย anyย of them have. There are at least three older riders Iโve just met for the first time sitting across from me, and the one I already knowโAuraโis as far away as possible on the right side, closest to the map. But at least Halden isnโt here, and he wasnโt on the draft roster, either, which is a relief. Maybe theyโve decided against a royal representative after all.
Gradyโs still arguing with his team. โNorth isโโ
The door swings open at my left, and Xaden steps in.
Every head turns in his direction, but mine whips fastest. The last four days have felt like an eternity. Being close to him without having the kind of access Iโm used to is frustrating as hell. Iโm constantly aware of where he is when his shields are down, and even when theyโre up, I find myself looking around every corner in hopes thereโs something more to the shadows.
With Xaden sleeping in the professorsโ quarters, turns out that sneaking around isnโt just hard, itโs impossible. Thereโs a Navarrian rider watching everywhere I go.
The library? Ewan Faber has one convenient eye on the squad.
The dormitory? Aura finds a sudden interest in late-night hall patrols.
Going to visit Sawyer? Caroline Ashton and her minions trail along behind.
โThis is a closed meeting,โ Lieutenant Forgot-his-name says, drawing his dimpled chin back in indignation.
โI forgive you for failing to invite me,โ Xaden replies, sinking into the chair on my left.
I bite back a smile. He might think heโs changed, but that comment is undeniably him.
โWeโre not taking aย separatistโโ the lieutenant starts to argue, his hands moving almost violently as he signs.
โYou already are,โ I interrupt with a sweet smile.
Jesinia tucks her chin into her robes, and I know sheโs muffling a laugh.
โWe can waste time arguing,โ Xaden says, โor we can just agree that Tairn isnโt going anywhere without Sgaeyl and move on.โ
Quill scratches across parchment as Jesinia quickly takes notes, but thereโs a definite smirk on her mouth still.
Captain Gradyโs jaw flexes, but I have to respect that itโs his only outward display of annoyance. Anyone with a set of bars on their shoulders should have predicted this, but Iโm curious to see how heโll handle it considering how illogically our squad has been formed. โFine,โ he finally says. โCadet Neilwart, please add his name to our roster.โ He glances down the table. โEveryone here has been chosen for this mission because I trust them. Make your introductions if you havenโt,โ he orders the others, then turns to look at the map.
โCaptain Henson,โ the woman with tightly woven black braids to his right replies, nodding. โAir wielder.โ
โLieutenant Pugh.โ The next man narrows his pale blue eyes. โFarsight.โ
โLieutenant Foley.โย Ah, thatโs his name. โAgrarian.โ
โCadet Beinhaven.โ Aura lifts her chin. โFire wielder.โ
โLieutenant Winshire.โ Anna smiles. โInfantry liaison.โ
โLieutenant Riorson,โ Xaden replies.ย โItโs like he pulled a list of the most common signets and started choosing names.โ
โAnd there are no fliers or Aretian riders.โย I fiddle with my pen.ย โDoesnโt exactly speak to the spirit of alliance.โ
โWhy no shield signets?โ Xaden asks. โClearly weโll be out beyond the wards, unless you think thereโs an entire den hiding within Navarreโs borders that the Empyrean doesnโt know about.โ
โYou were able to hide one,โ Foley snaps.
โThinking the Empyrean wasnโt aware for six years tells me all I need to know about where your and your dragonโs priorities are.โ Xaden shrugs.
โStop,โ Grady orders. โAnd Iโve asked General Tinery for a particular shield wielder. Just waiting on a response.โ
Xadenโs brow knits for a millisecond, just long enough to let me know heโs digging around peopleโs intentions. โYou could just ask me. Mira Sorrengail is the only rider proven beyond the wards, and sheโs stationed in Aretia.โ
I grip the pen. Mira had been my first choice in this mission to begin withโฆif theyโd asked me.
โWhich is the Southern Wing and clearly under the command of General Tinery.โ Pugh glowers at Xaden.
โExcept for Tyrrendor,โ Xaden replies, โwhich as of the Second Aretia Accord now falls to the reigning house.โ He cocks his head to the side. โWell, really Ulices and Kylynn, but they answer to me.โ
Quill rasping against parchment is the only sound as some jaws are picked up off the floor and others lock.
I sit back in my chair and fight the urge to smile.ย โHave to say, the casual flex of power is pretty hot.โ
โDonโt,โย he warns.ย โIโm barely keeping my hands to myself as it is. If you knew how often I think about sneaking into your roomโฆโ
My pulse quickens.
โIs this what I can expect,ย Lieutenant Riorson?โ Grady asks, color rising in his neck. โYou pulling title into military matters? Thereโs a reason aristocrats donโt wear black.โ
โHappens more often than you think,โ I mutter, signing it discreetly to my friend.
Jesinia lifts the quill and doesnโt record my smart-ass remark, but she definitely fights off a laugh.
โDepends on how those matters are handled,โ Xaden threatens, his hand motions sharpening as he signs and his tone slipping into that dangerous calm that makes the lieutenants across from us shift in their seats and my gaze flicker his way.
The hair rises on the back of my neck. Thereโs a flash of somethingโฆcold in his eyes, but itโs gone with a single blink. Huh.
โYou and I are going to have problems,โ Captain Grady warns.
โProbably.โ Xaden nods.
Grady breathes deeply as the flush creeps to his jawline. โAs we were saying. Weโve been given six months to find the seventh breed. The Senarium has ordered that we report back between searching potential sites to keep them informedโโ
โWhat a fucking waste of time,โย Xaden says.
โโwhich means selecting our first search areas within easy flight,โ Grady continues.
โJust wait, it gets better.โย I pick up my pen and roll it between my forefingers and thumb to keep myself busy.ย โI miss your hands.โ
โSame.โย He keeps his eyes on the map, but a band of shadow curls up my leg beneath the table and wraps around my upper thigh.ย โAnd your mouth, especially if thatโs all Iโm allowing myself.โ
Itโs on the tip of my mental tongue to tell him he doesnโt have to limit himself, but Iโm sure drawing more power from the earthย on his last mission isnโt exactly evoking confidence in his self-control.
โAnd Iโve chosen to begin along the northward coastline,โ Captain Grady finishes.
Xadenโs brows hit the ceiling.
โTold you it got better.โ
Captain Henson drums her fingers on the table. โWhy?โ
Grady clears his throat. โBasing our operation at the coastline gives us access to magic. Plus, the Emerald Sea is largely unexploredโโ
โBecause sailors donโt return from the deepest waters,โ Henson retorts, then looks my way. โWhere would your dragon like to search?โ
โCadet Sorrengail isnโt in charge,โ Aura interrupts.
โYouโre only here because I chose not to kill you for going after my wingleader,โ I reply.ย โThis is a mistake. The only people I trust in this room are you and Jesinia, and sheโs reporting the missions after we return, not going on them.โ
โAgreed.โย Shadows swirl along the base of the wall.ย โMira should add some balance, but not enough.โ
โThe last known communication we have with any isle kingdom is Deverelli,โ I say into the awkward silence. โFrom what Iโve read, the merchant isle trades in more than goods. If thereโs information to be had there, we can buy it for the right price. We should search all possible avenues, not just the north.โ
Jesinia subtly nods as she records what Iโve suggested.
Everyone across from us starts speaking at once.
โTheyโll kill us if we go there.โ
โSplitting our forces weakens the squad.โ
โDragon-haters, all of them.โ
โIf the dragons were on the isles, one of them would have bragged.โ
โOr used them in an assault,โย I mutter mentally.
โWhat do you know?โย Xaden asks, and the band of shadowย strokesย my inner thigh.
Fuck, itโs hard to think when he does that.ย โRecords of the second Krovlan uprising have been ripped out of General Cadaoโs journal, and Jesinia thinks an officer hinted that an isle kingdom was involved hundreds of yearsย afterย we severed contact. General Aetos asked me about my fatherโs research on the subject last yearโโ
โFeathertails.โย Xadenโs jaw ticks.ย โI vaguely remember him mentioning something about it on our way to the flight field.โ
โExactly. Dragons mentioned with isles tells me we should look south.โย I watch the others descend into shouting, their hands flying as they sign, and Aura is the shrillest of them all. Pretty bold coming from a cadet.ย โI donโt know the contents of Dadโs research, but I do remember him suddenly going secretive with it about six months before he died. If heโd wanted Aetos or Markham to have it, he would have left the information in his Archives office.โ
โAs opposed to?โย He glances my way as the shouting only grows.
โItโs in their quarters.โย I wince.ย โGeneral Aetosโs quarters. Donโt worry, Dainโs agreed to help me find it.โ
Xaden cracks his neck.ย โโDonโt worryโ and โDainโ do not belong in the same sentence.โ
โSilence!โ Grady shouts, his complexion fully ruddy. โAside from already provided logic, Deverelli requires too high a price for an audience. South is not an option,โ he says to me, then turns toward Captain Henson. โAnd as for the Emerald Sea, perhaps dragons are the reason sailors donโt return. Until further notice, assume we will fly northward in the next month. Prepare your supplies. This meeting is adjourned.โ
Fuck. Every bone in my body says to fly south.
โStay,โย Xaden says.ย โIโd kill for thirty seconds with you.โ
โAbsolutely.โย A freakingย hugย sounds great.
Xaden and I hang behind as everyone files out, even Jesinia, but Aura Beinhaven waits at the door like a nursemaid, her brow arched as I gather my things.
โYes, Aura?โ I ask as I close my pack.
โJust waiting to escort you back to the quadrant.โ She looks pointedly at Xaden. โWouldnโt want you getting in trouble or doing something Iโd have to report to General Aetos, seeing as Grady chose me as yourย companionย and all.โ
More like a fucking chaperone. โDo you mean Panchek?โ
She shakes her head. โAetos made it clear to the wingleaders that the Code of Conduct is to be followed to the letter.โ Her eyes narrow. โNaturally, weโve passed that order down through the chain of command. Turns out there are lots of us happy to make your life as miserable as possible.โ
โGreat.โ I force a smile and the shadow slips from my thigh as I walk past Xaden, keeping even my eyes to myself so she doesnโt have anything to report.
โWeโll get time,โย he promises.
โYouโre safe here. Thatโs all that matters.โ
At least until we go northward.
