Chapter no 37

Not in Love

THE FRIENDS WE MADE ALONG THE

WAY

ELI

Minami found him sitting on one of the swinging chairs on theย back porch, the ones Maya had bought at a yard sale and restored the previous summer, when sheโ€™d been between undergrad and her masterโ€™s and

had wanted a relaxing craft project to free her mind. The sun was on the verge of setting, a blend of blue and gold and orange hues, and Eli thought it a fitting way to bookend this long, messy, poignant day in which so many things had come to a close.

โ€œIsnโ€™t it too disgustingly hot to be outside?โ€ Minami asked.

He tipped his bottle at her and smiled. โ€œBeerโ€™s nice and cool.โ€ โ€œGod, Iโ€™m jealous.โ€

โ€œHave one, too.โ€ โ€œCanโ€™t.โ€

โ€œYeah, you can. Theyโ€™re in the fridge.โ€ โ€œNo, Eli. Iย canโ€™t.โ€

He frowned, confused. Then it dawned on him all at once, and his eyes bugged out of his face. โ€œHoly shit.โ€

โ€œYup.โ€

โ€œAre you reallyโ€”โ€

โ€œYup, yup.โ€

โ€œWhen did youโ€”shit. When you were sick, you werenโ€™t reallyโ€”โ€ โ€œNope. Well, Iย wasย puking my heart out. Just not for the reason you

thought.โ€

He hadnโ€™t thought it possible, not after the last few hours, but happy laughter burst out of him. He stood, enveloping Minami in a bear hug. โ€œJesus.ย Wow.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re so happy,โ€ she said against his T-shirt.

โ€œI bet.โ€ He shook his head, amazed. โ€œYouโ€™re going to be fantastic parents. Obnoxious, too.โ€

โ€œI know. And youโ€™re going to be a great uncle who constantly spoils her and undermines our authority.โ€

Her. Minami couldnโ€™t possibly know yet, but he liked the idea. โ€œI would settle for no less.โ€ He drew back. Took in her smile and shining eyes. โ€œWe should celebrate. How about a cold beer?โ€

โ€œFuck off.โ€ She plopped on his chair, sighing in pleasure as she sank into the soft cushions.

โ€œI think Maya has root beer somewhere.โ€ โ€œOh. Do you have vanilla ice cream?โ€

โ€œMaybe?โ€

โ€œI would give my firstborn for a float.โ€ โ€œNah.โ€ Eli waved her off. โ€œKeep her.โ€

Five minutes later he came back with the first float heโ€™d made in over two decades. Minami accepted it with a smile, and as he pulled up another chair, she asked, โ€œGuess how pissed Hark is?โ€

โ€œAbout the baby?โ€

โ€œOh, he doesnโ€™t know about that yet.โ€

โ€œPlanning to put off telling him until youโ€™re in labor in Harknessโ€™s gender-neutral restrooms?โ€

โ€œOnly if he walks in while sheโ€™s crowning. Guess how pissed he is about the deal we made with Florence?โ€

Eli exhaled. โ€œIโ€™m assuming heโ€™s sharpening his kitchen knives.โ€ โ€œAnd youโ€™d be correct.โ€

He took the first sip of a fresh beer. Work was going to be shit for a while.

โ€œUnfortunately, heโ€™s not showing it,โ€ Minami continued. โ€œI wish he raged at me a bit. Or called me names. Told me Iโ€™m a traitor, that I took

away his one motivation in life, that I deserve what Florence took from me. You know, the kind of over-the-top dramatic shit he always spouts when he becomes angry and his accent gets unintelligible.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m familiar,โ€ he said dryly.

โ€œBut heโ€™s just sourpussing. Icily polite. Like when I told him Sul and I were going to get married? I was bracing for an explosion, and what I got was a four-hundred-dollar toaster.โ€

โ€œWhat the fuck?โ€ Eli lifted his eyebrow. โ€œIs it encrusted with diamonds?โ€

โ€œNo. It looks like the twenty-five-dollar toaster I had in grad school.โ€ โ€œFuck capitalism, man.โ€ He snorted. โ€œDonโ€™t worry, this time around it

wasnโ€™t your doing. Iโ€™m the one who put Rue before Kline. Itโ€™s me heโ€™s pissed at.โ€

โ€œI was the deciding vote, though. I sided with you.โ€ She sucked an impressive amount of sludge through her straw. โ€œHow did you know that I would, by the way?โ€

The thing was, heย hadnโ€™t. Not before Hark had asked them to put the matter to a vote. What heย hadย known was that Rue stood to lose something that meant the world to her, and he wasnโ€™t willing to accept that without a fight. โ€œYou know what I think?โ€ he said.

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œThat what nearly happened to Rue was so similar to what Florence did to us, Iโ€™m not sure heโ€™d have allowed it, either. He tries to play the part of the asshole, but . . . I canโ€™t see him living with that.โ€

โ€œYou think he counted on us to overrule him?โ€ Eli shrugged.

โ€œWow. Heโ€™s such a shithead.โ€ โ€œI canโ€™t prove it.โ€

โ€œSuch anย allegedย shithead.โ€

Eli laughed, and a comfortable silence descended, filled by cicadas and slurping sounds. Until she asked quietly, โ€œDo we have a deal?โ€

He nodded. โ€œThe lawyers are writing it up.โ€ โ€œDo tell.โ€

โ€œFlorence wonโ€™t be selling the patent, or any other company asset. The patent will be Rueโ€™s. In exchange, weโ€™ll forgive the loan, and get a sixty percent equity in Kline. The other investors keep thirty-five.โ€

โ€œAnd she gets . . . ?โ€

โ€œFive percent. Which is five percent more than she deserves. We allow her to stay on as CEO. We get three of the five board seats and observer rights at board meetings. And, as a bonus, I threw in a little gift.โ€

โ€œWhich is?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not going to key her car.โ€ โ€œYouโ€™re very generous.โ€

โ€œAm I?โ€ He sighed, wondering at the empty ache in his chest, resisting the urge to massage his sternum, to think about Rue. Heโ€™d known what he needed from her for a while, but putting it into words had precipitated the feeling, amplified the way every single nerve in his body simplyย wanted her. โ€œMaybe Iโ€™m just an idiot.โ€

โ€œNo maybes there. How was it, talking to Florence face-to-face?โ€

Eli remembered her flushed face as he let her know that they had the books. Her bitterness and resignation as they ironed out the kinks of their deal. โ€œIโ€™d tried to imagine it, you know? How it would happen. What Iโ€™d say when I finally spoke to her again.โ€

โ€œLike, in the shower? When you have those forty-minute conversations with yourself ?โ€

He gave her a baffled look. โ€œHow long are your showers?โ€ โ€œA normal length, shut up.โ€

โ€œIn my environmentally conscious, non-shower conversations, I was going to tell her how incredibly shitty my life had been after what she did. About my parents, and Maya. How I had to take two minimum-wage jobs literally three days after it all went down, and the absolute mortification of failing at the one thing I cared about. I was going to take every single moment of misery and anger and desperation the three of us had in the past ten years and throw them in her face and ask her . . .โ€

โ€œโ€˜Are you not entertained?โ€™โ€

He laughed. โ€œSomething like that. Hark and I talked about this several times, mostly drunk. He always said that he wanted to make herย pay. Make her feel like a fool for what sheโ€™d done to us. And part of me gets it, but the bigger part just . . .โ€

โ€œYou just wanted her to understand the hurt she caused. Maybe get a nice apology.โ€

โ€œHow did you know?โ€

โ€œI just knowย you. A disgustingly unpetty person.โ€ She rolled her eyes theatrically. โ€œI swear you need classes.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know about that. Because when I was there, with Florence . . . I just pitied her. More than a little.โ€ He looked at Minamiโ€™s dark eyes. Her familiar, beloved round face. The expectant tilt of her chin. โ€œSheโ€™s alone in this mess sheโ€™s made for herself. She has always been her own personal endgame. Played shady games, won shady prizes. If I hadnโ€™t been negotiating for Rueโ€™s patent, we could have kicked her out of Kline altogether. No five percent, no CEO. But Iโ€™m not even sure that matters, because everything she owns was built on top of lies, and she hasnโ€™t changed. We have, though. And weโ€™ve stood by each other.โ€

โ€œWell, Hark is probably going to need a couple of weeks of cooling down before any more consensual by-standing occurs.โ€

โ€œUp to a month. But the point is, everything she has can be taken from her. While we have built something thatโ€”โ€

โ€œPlease donโ€™t say that the real equity in the biofuel tech was the friends we made along the way.โ€

He set his beer on the small glass table and locked eyes with her. โ€œMinami, Iโ€™m going to ask you to get off my porch and go fuck right off.โ€

She let out a sound that Eli could only describe as a cackle. โ€œSul says Iโ€™m funny.โ€

โ€œSulโ€™s more whipped than a bowl of mashed potatoes.โ€ โ€œDonโ€™t you whisk those?โ€

โ€œMaybe?โ€

โ€œMcKenzie would know.โ€ โ€œShe would.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll text her. Also, heโ€™s only whipped because Iโ€™m funny.โ€ โ€œIโ€™ve never once seen him laugh.โ€

โ€œAnd thatโ€™s the reason heโ€™s in love withย meย and not withย you.ย Iย make him laugh. In the privacy of our home.โ€

Eli shook his head. Rue made him laugh, too. She made him eager to do unspeakable things for just one more minute with her. She made him crave that comfortable, expansive silence between them. Rue made him stop and think, and above all she made himย yearnย like heโ€™d not thought himself capable of, and he wanted to spend the rest of his life cataloging the ways she shouldnโ€™t have beenย rightย for him, and yet still managed to beย perfect.

Rue eviscerated him and made him anew. And if she didnโ€™t want the product of that . . .

Well. That was for him to accept.

โ€œIf you had asked me two weeks ago, Iโ€™d have told you that the only happy ending to our story was with Florence out of Kline. But now . . .โ€ Minamiโ€™s lips curved in a small smile, her profile as familiar to him as his sisterโ€™s. โ€œWe control the boardโ€”and the tech. I think the way things turned out might be for the best.โ€

โ€œYeah?โ€

โ€œWe started Harkness out of revenge, and we let spite fuel us. And donโ€™t get me wrong, I donโ€™t regret our multi-presidential-term revenge plot. But we have accomplished so much more andโ€”โ€

โ€œGained friends along the way?โ€

She punched his arm. โ€œWe make really good money. We get to work with amazing scientists and help them develop amazing shit. And fine, yes, we have each other. Maybe itโ€™s not what weโ€™d envisioned, but itโ€™s good.โ€ Her eyes gleamed suspiciously. โ€œAnd now you have Rue.โ€

Eli glanced at the sun sinking into the sycamore trees. โ€œIf Rue is ever ready or willing to be had.โ€

โ€œWe all have shit to work through. Itโ€™s just a matter of time.โ€

He said nothing, letting himself feel the tight knot in his throat, the ache that came with not knowing when,ย ifย heโ€™d see her again. Heโ€™d made his move, and her silent reaction had been loud and clear. Her shocked look when heโ€™d told her that he loved her. Unfortunately, the gap between โ€œnot just fuckingโ€ and โ€œwanting a relationshipโ€ was wider than the Sargasso Sea. โ€œI donโ€™t know.โ€

Minami reached out and closed her hand around his. โ€œIโ€™m sorry.โ€ โ€œYeah. Me, too.โ€

โ€œI swear Iโ€™m not trying to be condescendingโ€”โ€ โ€œWhat a promising start.โ€

โ€œโ€”but, I know this whole being-madly-in-love thing is new for you, so Iโ€™m going to impart a piece of wisdom to you. Ready?โ€

โ€œGo ahead.โ€

โ€œNo one dies of a broken heart.โ€

A soft laugh eased out of him. โ€œGood to know, because it fucking hurts.โ€ He let out a deep breath. โ€œThere is something I want to do for her. But Iโ€™m not sure sheโ€™ll accept it if itโ€™s from me.โ€

Her look was concerned. โ€œI think youโ€™ve done enough, Eli. Shouldnโ€™t you keep just aย tinyย bit of dignity?โ€ It was a joke, but Eliโ€™s reply was serious.

โ€œI want her to be all right more than I want to keep my dignity.โ€

โ€œChrist.โ€ Minami gave him an aghast look. โ€œOn second thought, youย mightย die from a broken heart.โ€ She drained what was left of her float and set her glass on the table. โ€œOkay, hit me. What do you need this fatigued, overworked, pregnant woman to do for you?โ€
