LETโS TRY TO MAKE IT RIGHT
RUE
And youโreย reallyย sure that she admitted to it?โ Tisha asked forย what had to be the fourth time. Iโd already replied to the first three, but still didnโt blame her.ย Iย could scarcely believe it, and had gotten it straight from
the source. โI am.โ
โAnd itโs not some kind of . . . I donโt know, a stroke. Or, I donโt know how common folies ร deux are these days, but maybe Florence and Eli are both in the throes of one? Maybe itโs not quite the way Eli painted it? A misunderstanding, in which Florence is not nearly as gaslight-gatekeep- girlbossy as heโs trying to make her out. Or the Harkness people could be biased and exaggerating their contribution to the tech. I mean, are youย reallyย sure that sheโโ
โAdmitted to it?โ Diego shouted from Tishaโs kitchenette. Then he came to lean against the doorjambโa bare-chested, bespectacled, body-built nerd who couldnโt have been more Tishaโs type. Tisha had supposedly been working from home, but her short kimono clearly broadcast that they had been in the middle of something when I barged in. Diego had taken my uninvited appearance like a champ. โRue, could you please tell Tisha whether youโreย reallyย sure that Florence admitted to it?โ
โIโd rather not.โ
โLet us know if you change your mind.โ โNever.โ
โUnderstood.โ
I hadnโt liked a Tisha boyfriend this much in years, and hoped heโd stick around. Even Bruce seemed to be a fan, rubbing himself against Diegoโs calves while shooting me his repertoire of skeptical glances.
โOkay, you two can stop being chummy and cahootsy against me.โ
Diego and I exchanged one last cahootsy look before he disappeared into the bedroom. It was an immense relief, being with Tisha. Sharing the burden of todayโs discovery. The last few hours had upended the last few years of my life, but Tisha was here, unchanged. Still standing as everything else crumbled down.
โIf Florence admitted to doing that shitโand yes, I know sheย hasโwell
. . .โ Tisha shrugged. โListen, I love her. You love her. She did so much for us, and weโre probably going to keep on loving her, even if she fucked up. At least weโll try. But this is not a small thing. This is someoneโsย livelihood. This is someoneโs hopes and dreams and entire career. We have to do something.โ
โI know. But what?โ
She scratched her temple. โWhat if it was your patent that Florence had stolen? What would you want Minami to do?โ
My mouth was dry. โI would want her to help me make it right. Even after ten years. Even if she wasnโt the one responsible to begin with, I would want her to be on my side.โ
โOkay.โ Tisha nodded. โThen letโs try to make it right.โ
โWe have no evidence. If UT swept it under the rug years agoโโ โReporting it wonโt do anything.โ Tisha bit into her lower lip. โIโm not
sure what else, though. We might not be the best people to figure this out.โ
An idea hit me. โNo, we arenโt.โ I let out a breathless laugh. โBut you know who is?โ
