Despite my best attempts at distracting Dahlia from our current situation, I find her getting lost in her thoughts numerous times throughout the night. I hate to see her spiraling, but there isnโt a
lot I can do while trapped in a jail cell.
I know she regrets admitting she is falling in love with me. Just like I know she plans on fighting me every step of the way until either she accepts the truth or I give up.
Words will only get me so far, so instead of making her a promise she wonโt believe anyway, I keep quiet and hold her tight against me until Roberts returns.
The deputy takes his sweet time walking over to us, only to stop in front of the door and turn toward Dahlia. โBen told me about the prank you had planned. Sorry I ruined it.โ
The asshole doesnโt sound the least bit sorry. โWhat prank is he talking about?โ I ask her.
She rises from the bench and stretches her legs. โA stupid one.โ
Roberts leans against the bars. โDahlia here planned on having you thrown in the back of a cruiser and dropped off at your motherโs house with the sirens on so all the neighbors would make a fuss.โ
Although my mother would have happily filmed the whole thing, I would have died of embarrassment before making it up the driveway.
He shrugs. โToo bad I ruined Strawberry Sweetheartโs plan.โ Dahliaโs cheeks flush.
โDonโt call her that,โ I snap.
His lips curl. โDid I strike a chord?โ I force my mouth shut.
Dahlia stares at me for a solid ten seconds without blinking. โStrawberry Sweetheart?โ
My hands curl by my sides.
She frowns. โMy contact name on your phone doesnโt stand for Satanโs Spawn, does it?โ
Mierda. No wonder she is hesitant about falling in love with me if she thinks her contact information on my phone meansย that.
Roberts unlocks the door with a special sparkle in his eyes. โYouโre both free to go, although Iโm not sure you will feel that way once you see your mothers.โ
โGracias por eso, pendejo,โ I mutter under my breath.
Gracias por eso, pendejo:ย Thanks for that, dick.
Dahlia drags her feet behind me as Roberts leads us through the station. She prolongs the inevitable by asking to use the restroom and grabbing a drink of water, which only excites Roberts more.
โGood luck.โ He walks back to his desk, where he can watch our mothersโ reactions with glee.
Dahlia cringes at the expression on her motherโs face as we walk up to them. โMami.โ
โNot here,โ she hisses before walking outside. Itโs still dark, which means we couldnโt have spent too long in the cell, although it sure felt like forever.
Dahlia follows behind her mother with slumped shoulders while mine locks elbows with me and whistles.
โยฟEn la camioneta de tu papรก? ยฟEn serio?โ โMa.โ
โI didnโt think you had something like that in you.โ I trip over my feet.
She swats my arm with a laugh. โItโs okay. That truck has seen a lot of miles over the years, so Iโm not one to judge, although itโs a good thing you redid the whole interior.โ
A full-body shudder rolls through me as we walk outside to find Rosa raising her arms in the air and whisper-shouting while Dahliaโs eyes drop to her boots.
โI raised you better than that.โ
ยฟEn la camioneta de tu papรก? ยฟEn serio?:ย In your dadโs truck? Seriously?
Dahlia flinches.
โI expect something like this from your sister, but you?ย Nunca en mi vida.โ
โPerdรณn, Mami.โ
โThe whole town is going to know about this by tomorrow morning.โ Dahlia looks as excited about the idea as I probably do.
Rosaโs arms flail. โWhat will I say when Father Anthony asks how I feel about my daughter going to hell for premarital sex?โ
โDo me a favor and ask him if the weather is hot all year round so I can plan my outfits accordingly.โ
โDahlia Isabella Muรฑoz!ย ยกNo empieces conmigo!โ
My mom nudges me. โLetโs go save Dahlia before she reconsiders moving back here.โ
A little too late for that after her call about Archer.
โRosa!โ My mom claps her hands together. โLetโs relax. Theyโre kids.
Itโs not like we can expect them to know any better.โ โKids? I had Dahlia when I was her age.โ
โAnd you did such a good job raising herโthis little incident with the truck aside.โ My mother wraps an arm around her childhood friend and steers her toward her car. I bet she will talk Rosa down from her tirade in two minutes flat.
I loop my arm around Dahliaโs waist and lead her to the sidewalk instead of my motherโs car. โWhat do you say we walk
Nunca en mi vida:ย Never in my life.
ยกNo empieces conmigo!:ย Donโt start with me.
back to the truck instead?โ
Her gaze swings from my momโs car to me a few times while she gnaws on the inside of her cheek. โOkay.โ
Dahlia remains quiet as we walk toward the diner. I only last sixty seconds before breaking the silence. โDid your mom actually believe you were saving yourself for marriage?โ
โIf she didโwhich Iโm almost positive was the caseโitโs safe to say she doesnโt anymore.โ
I flinch. โSheโs going to hate me.โ
โProbably. You are the man who stole her virgin daughterโs ticket to heaven.โ
โPretty sure you earned yourself a one-way trip to hell years ago, but fine, Iโll take the blame for your fall from grace.โ
โThis is so embarrassing,โ she groans. โWhat will everyone think?โ โThat itโs about goddamn time.โ
She stops midstride.
โWe got caught having sex in a parking lot. Itโs not exactly the scandal of the year.โ I press my hand against the small of her back and give her a little push.
โNo one knows weโre together.โ โThey will now.โ
โJulian,โ she pleads, but for what, Iโm not too sure. She wraps her arms around herself. โThis isnโt going to work between us.โ
โBecause of the long distance or your trust issues?โ The comment slips out before I have a chance to rein it in.
Her step falters, along with her breathing.
I rub my face with a curse. โWeโll figure it out.โ
Neither one of us says anything else for the remainder of the walk, which gives me time to process our situation.
Did I expect Dahlia to push me away when she realized how she felt about me? Yes, I did, yet Iโm still disappointed to think she would so easily give up on us because of a few logistical problems.
Iโm not the same guy she expects me to be anymore. Iโve changed, and if I have to fight Dahlia every step of the way to prove it to her, then so be it.
By the time we make it to the dinerโs parking lot, a plan has already started forming in my head.
โAre you hungry?โ I unlock the truck and open the passenger door. โNo.โ A condensation cloud forms from her long exhale.
I grab her by the hips and lift her into the cab before she has a chance to climb on the step bar.
Once the engine rumbles to life, I blast the heat. โYou should eat something.โ
Her nose scrunches. โI will.โ
Message received loud and painfully clear.
โIs this your plan, then?โ My question packs a bite. Her brows scrunch. โWhat?โ
โPush me away because youโd rather avoid your feelings about us.โ โIโI donโt know.โ
โI think you do.โ
Her nostrils flare. โSince you know everything, why donโt you go ahead and say what Iโm thinking?โ
โI donโt need to be a mind reader to know youโre afraid.โ โIโm not afraid, Julian. Iโm fuckingย terrified.โ
My forehead creases from my furrowed brows. โI donโt want to fall in love with you.โ
My ragged breath matches hers.
โI donโt want to fall in love with anyone.ย Period. It nearly destroyed me the last time, and Iโm not sure I could survive that kind of pain again.โ Her voice cracks toward the end. โYou deserve someone who trusts you, and Iโm not sure Iโll be able to do that when I canโt trust myself.โ
The twinge in my chest morphs into full-blown heartache. โI canโt take back the pain you went through, no matter how much I wish I could, but I can promise to never hurt you like he did.โ
โA little too late for that.โ She canโt hold my gaze for more than a second.
โDahlia.โ I cradle her chin despite the pain lacing through my chest. โIโm not going to give up because you expect me to.โ
โBecause you like a challenge?โ
โBecause I likeย youย enough to know youโre worth fighting for.โ
She stares out the window. โIโm moving back to San Francisco in January for my new show.โ
Iโm aware, seeing as I spent the last few hours in a jail cell processing the fact.
But what are you going to do about it?
Somehow, in a short span of time, I went from planning the rest of my life in Lake Wisteria to putting everything on the line for the woman beside me. Because if Dahlia wants to move back to San Francisco, then I plan on going with her, and no amount of cons in the world will stop me.
I reach for her clenched hand. โWhen we break the news to my mom about moving, do me a favor and tell her youโre in love with me. Itโll help soften the blow.โ
Her cloudy eyes tug at something in my chest. โYou canโt seriously be considering moving.โ
โI am.โ
โBut what about your company?โ
โTurns out Iโd rather build a home with you than a thousand houses by myself.โ
She turns away with a sniffle.
I cup her chin and turn her head toward me. โWhat part ofย Iโm falling in love with youย are you not understanding?โ
โThe part where you give up your whole life here for me.โ
โLife without you is hardly considered a life at all, so Iโm not giving up anything by following you to San Francisco.โ
โNo, but by being with me, youโd be giving up the chance at having your own family.โ She stares at her lap like it holds the secrets of the world.
โIs that what this is really about?โ
Her face remains blank, but the vein in her neck throbs.
Why didnโt you consider that sooner?
โYou think Iโll regret being with you because you canโt have kids of your own?โ
โIย knowย you will because itโs already happened once before.โ โI already told you I donโt want to have kids that way.โ
She shakes her head. โThis isnโt the first time Iโve heard someone tell me that.โ
I could find a hundred different ways to tell her I care enough to choose her, but none of them matter unless I find a way toย showย her.
Pro: She could find my list romantic.
Con: She may reject me anyway after I reveal one of my biggest secrets. Shut up and show her.
I pull out my phone and open the note-taking app. โHere.โ
She grabs it from me and reads over the first few lines of text. โYouโve been working on a pro-con list aboutย me?โ
I nod.
โPro: She sucks at chess. Seriously?โ Her nose scrunches.
โNot my fault you started every single game with the queenโs pawn opening. Change it up every now and then.โ
She returns to the list. โPro: I like her enough to attend Stanford too.โ She looks at me for a few seconds without blinking. โYou chose Stanford because of me?โ
โYes. You liked California, and I liked you, so it made sense.โ
She shakes her head in disbelief. โHow long have you been working on this?โ
โSince sometime after you started competing for the Strawberry Sweetheart pageant.โ
She blinks. โThat was over a decade ago.โ โIโm aware.โ
โBut why?โ
โInformed decision-making is my thing.โ
She scrolls through the list while mumbling to herself. โThere are things listed here that I donโt do anymore.โ
I know.ย Unfortunately, I inherited my appreciation for nostalgia from my mother, and I have never been able to outgrow it, which is the only reason why I could never delete the list no matter how many times I tried.
After a few more minutes, she reaches the bottom of the note. โYou only have one negative.โ
Con: She may never love me back.
โLittle by little, your cons annoyingly started making their way over to the pros column.โ
Her laugh comes out like a half sob. โThatโs ridiculous.โ โNo, Dahlia, thatโsย love.โ
โYou agreed to a casual relationship knowing your feelings might never be reciprocated?โ Disbelief colors her voice.
โYes.โ
โWhy?โ
โSome people are worth the risk.โ Her bottom lip wobbles.
โLife without you was a series of pros and cons. Risks and rewards. Black and white with very few shades of gray. But then you came back and flipped a switch inside me, flooding my world with color after a ten-year blackout, and I donโt plan on giving that up. Not now. Not ever.โ
Tears pool near her lash line.
โYou might not believe my words now, but I wonโt stop until you do. So go ahead and try to push me away, but you already know based on our
history that I will stop at nothing to prove you wrong.โ
