Chapter no 44 – Julian

Love Redesigned

Despite my best attempts at distracting Dahlia from our current situation, I find her getting lost in her thoughts numerous times throughout the night. I hate to see her spiraling, but there isnโ€™t a

lot I can do while trapped in a jail cell.

I know she regrets admitting she is falling in love with me. Just like I know she plans on fighting me every step of the way until either she accepts the truth or I give up.

Words will only get me so far, so instead of making her a promise she wonโ€™t believe anyway, I keep quiet and hold her tight against me until Roberts returns.

The deputy takes his sweet time walking over to us, only to stop in front of the door and turn toward Dahlia. โ€œBen told me about the prank you had planned. Sorry I ruined it.โ€

The asshole doesnโ€™t sound the least bit sorry. โ€œWhat prank is he talking about?โ€ I ask her.

She rises from the bench and stretches her legs. โ€œA stupid one.โ€

Roberts leans against the bars. โ€œDahlia here planned on having you thrown in the back of a cruiser and dropped off at your motherโ€™s house with the sirens on so all the neighbors would make a fuss.โ€

Although my mother would have happily filmed the whole thing, I would have died of embarrassment before making it up the driveway.

He shrugs. โ€œToo bad I ruined Strawberry Sweetheartโ€™s plan.โ€ Dahliaโ€™s cheeks flush.

โ€œDonโ€™t call her that,โ€ I snap.

His lips curl. โ€œDid I strike a chord?โ€ I force my mouth shut.

Dahlia stares at me for a solid ten seconds without blinking. โ€œStrawberry Sweetheart?โ€

My hands curl by my sides.

She frowns. โ€œMy contact name on your phone doesnโ€™t stand for Satanโ€™s Spawn, does it?โ€

Mierda. No wonder she is hesitant about falling in love with me if she thinks her contact information on my phone meansย that.

Roberts unlocks the door with a special sparkle in his eyes. โ€œYouโ€™re both free to go, although Iโ€™m not sure you will feel that way once you see your mothers.โ€

โ€œGracias por eso, pendejo,โ€ I mutter under my breath.

Gracias por eso, pendejo:ย Thanks for that, dick.

Dahlia drags her feet behind me as Roberts leads us through the station. She prolongs the inevitable by asking to use the restroom and grabbing a drink of water, which only excites Roberts more.

โ€œGood luck.โ€ He walks back to his desk, where he can watch our mothersโ€™ reactions with glee.

Dahlia cringes at the expression on her motherโ€™s face as we walk up to them. โ€œMami.โ€

โ€œNot here,โ€ she hisses before walking outside. Itโ€™s still dark, which means we couldnโ€™t have spent too long in the cell, although it sure felt like forever.

Dahlia follows behind her mother with slumped shoulders while mine locks elbows with me and whistles.

โ€œยฟEn la camioneta de tu papรก? ยฟEn serio?โ€ โ€œMa.โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t think you had something like that in you.โ€ I trip over my feet.

She swats my arm with a laugh. โ€œItโ€™s okay. That truck has seen a lot of miles over the years, so Iโ€™m not one to judge, although itโ€™s a good thing you redid the whole interior.โ€

A full-body shudder rolls through me as we walk outside to find Rosa raising her arms in the air and whisper-shouting while Dahliaโ€™s eyes drop to her boots.

โ€œI raised you better than that.โ€

ยฟEn la camioneta de tu papรก? ยฟEn serio?:ย In your dadโ€™s truck? Seriously?

Dahlia flinches.

โ€œI expect something like this from your sister, but you?ย Nunca en mi vida.โ€

โ€œPerdรณn, Mami.โ€

โ€œThe whole town is going to know about this by tomorrow morning.โ€ Dahlia looks as excited about the idea as I probably do.

Rosaโ€™s arms flail. โ€œWhat will I say when Father Anthony asks how I feel about my daughter going to hell for premarital sex?โ€

โ€œDo me a favor and ask him if the weather is hot all year round so I can plan my outfits accordingly.โ€

โ€œDahlia Isabella Muรฑoz!ย ยกNo empieces conmigo!โ€

My mom nudges me. โ€œLetโ€™s go save Dahlia before she reconsiders moving back here.โ€

A little too late for that after her call about Archer.

โ€œRosa!โ€ My mom claps her hands together. โ€œLetโ€™s relax. Theyโ€™re kids.

Itโ€™s not like we can expect them to know any better.โ€ โ€œKids? I had Dahlia when I was her age.โ€

โ€œAnd you did such a good job raising herโ€”this little incident with the truck aside.โ€ My mother wraps an arm around her childhood friend and steers her toward her car. I bet she will talk Rosa down from her tirade in two minutes flat.

I loop my arm around Dahliaโ€™s waist and lead her to the sidewalk instead of my motherโ€™s car. โ€œWhat do you say we walk

Nunca en mi vida:ย Never in my life.

ยกNo empieces conmigo!:ย Donโ€™t start with me.

back to the truck instead?โ€

Her gaze swings from my momโ€™s car to me a few times while she gnaws on the inside of her cheek. โ€œOkay.โ€

Dahlia remains quiet as we walk toward the diner. I only last sixty seconds before breaking the silence. โ€œDid your mom actually believe you were saving yourself for marriage?โ€

โ€œIf she didโ€”which Iโ€™m almost positive was the caseโ€”itโ€™s safe to say she doesnโ€™t anymore.โ€

I flinch. โ€œSheโ€™s going to hate me.โ€

โ€œProbably. You are the man who stole her virgin daughterโ€™s ticket to heaven.โ€

โ€œPretty sure you earned yourself a one-way trip to hell years ago, but fine, Iโ€™ll take the blame for your fall from grace.โ€

โ€œThis is so embarrassing,โ€ she groans. โ€œWhat will everyone think?โ€ โ€œThat itโ€™s about goddamn time.โ€

She stops midstride.

โ€œWe got caught having sex in a parking lot. Itโ€™s not exactly the scandal of the year.โ€ I press my hand against the small of her back and give her a little push.

โ€œNo one knows weโ€™re together.โ€ โ€œThey will now.โ€

โ€œJulian,โ€ she pleads, but for what, Iโ€™m not too sure. She wraps her arms around herself. โ€œThis isnโ€™t going to work between us.โ€

โ€œBecause of the long distance or your trust issues?โ€ The comment slips out before I have a chance to rein it in.

Her step falters, along with her breathing.

I rub my face with a curse. โ€œWeโ€™ll figure it out.โ€

Neither one of us says anything else for the remainder of the walk, which gives me time to process our situation.

Did I expect Dahlia to push me away when she realized how she felt about me? Yes, I did, yet Iโ€™m still disappointed to think she would so easily give up on us because of a few logistical problems.

Iโ€™m not the same guy she expects me to be anymore. Iโ€™ve changed, and if I have to fight Dahlia every step of the way to prove it to her, then so be it.

By the time we make it to the dinerโ€™s parking lot, a plan has already started forming in my head.

โ€œAre you hungry?โ€ I unlock the truck and open the passenger door. โ€œNo.โ€ A condensation cloud forms from her long exhale.

I grab her by the hips and lift her into the cab before she has a chance to climb on the step bar.

Once the engine rumbles to life, I blast the heat. โ€œYou should eat something.โ€

Her nose scrunches. โ€œI will.โ€

Message received loud and painfully clear.

โ€œIs this your plan, then?โ€ My question packs a bite. Her brows scrunch. โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œPush me away because youโ€™d rather avoid your feelings about us.โ€ โ€œIโ€”I donโ€™t know.โ€

โ€œI think you do.โ€

Her nostrils flare. โ€œSince you know everything, why donโ€™t you go ahead and say what Iโ€™m thinking?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t need to be a mind reader to know youโ€™re afraid.โ€ โ€œIโ€™m not afraid, Julian. Iโ€™m fuckingย terrified.โ€

My forehead creases from my furrowed brows. โ€œI donโ€™t want to fall in love with you.โ€

My ragged breath matches hers.

โ€œI donโ€™t want to fall in love with anyone.ย Period. It nearly destroyed me the last time, and Iโ€™m not sure I could survive that kind of pain again.โ€ Her voice cracks toward the end. โ€œYou deserve someone who trusts you, and Iโ€™m not sure Iโ€™ll be able to do that when I canโ€™t trust myself.โ€

The twinge in my chest morphs into full-blown heartache. โ€œI canโ€™t take back the pain you went through, no matter how much I wish I could, but I can promise to never hurt you like he did.โ€

โ€œA little too late for that.โ€ She canโ€™t hold my gaze for more than a second.

โ€œDahlia.โ€ I cradle her chin despite the pain lacing through my chest. โ€œIโ€™m not going to give up because you expect me to.โ€

โ€œBecause you like a challenge?โ€

โ€œBecause I likeย youย enough to know youโ€™re worth fighting for.โ€

She stares out the window. โ€œIโ€™m moving back to San Francisco in January for my new show.โ€

Iโ€™m aware, seeing as I spent the last few hours in a jail cell processing the fact.

But what are you going to do about it?

Somehow, in a short span of time, I went from planning the rest of my life in Lake Wisteria to putting everything on the line for the woman beside me. Because if Dahlia wants to move back to San Francisco, then I plan on going with her, and no amount of cons in the world will stop me.

I reach for her clenched hand. โ€œWhen we break the news to my mom about moving, do me a favor and tell her youโ€™re in love with me. Itโ€™ll help soften the blow.โ€

Her cloudy eyes tug at something in my chest. โ€œYou canโ€™t seriously be considering moving.โ€

โ€œI am.โ€

โ€œBut what about your company?โ€

โ€œTurns out Iโ€™d rather build a home with you than a thousand houses by myself.โ€

She turns away with a sniffle.

I cup her chin and turn her head toward me. โ€œWhat part ofย Iโ€™m falling in love with youย are you not understanding?โ€

โ€œThe part where you give up your whole life here for me.โ€

โ€œLife without you is hardly considered a life at all, so Iโ€™m not giving up anything by following you to San Francisco.โ€

โ€œNo, but by being with me, youโ€™d be giving up the chance at having your own family.โ€ She stares at her lap like it holds the secrets of the world.

โ€œIs that what this is really about?โ€

Her face remains blank, but the vein in her neck throbs.

Why didnโ€™t you consider that sooner?

โ€œYou think Iโ€™ll regret being with you because you canโ€™t have kids of your own?โ€

โ€œIย knowย you will because itโ€™s already happened once before.โ€ โ€œI already told you I donโ€™t want to have kids that way.โ€

She shakes her head. โ€œThis isnโ€™t the first time Iโ€™ve heard someone tell me that.โ€

I could find a hundred different ways to tell her I care enough to choose her, but none of them matter unless I find a way toย showย her.

Pro: She could find my list romantic.

Con: She may reject me anyway after I reveal one of my biggest secrets. Shut up and show her.

I pull out my phone and open the note-taking app. โ€œHere.โ€

She grabs it from me and reads over the first few lines of text. โ€œYouโ€™ve been working on a pro-con list aboutย me?โ€

I nod.

โ€œPro: She sucks at chess. Seriously?โ€ Her nose scrunches.

โ€œNot my fault you started every single game with the queenโ€™s pawn opening. Change it up every now and then.โ€

She returns to the list. โ€œPro: I like her enough to attend Stanford too.โ€ She looks at me for a few seconds without blinking. โ€œYou chose Stanford because of me?โ€

โ€œYes. You liked California, and I liked you, so it made sense.โ€

She shakes her head in disbelief. โ€œHow long have you been working on this?โ€

โ€œSince sometime after you started competing for the Strawberry Sweetheart pageant.โ€

She blinks. โ€œThat was over a decade ago.โ€ โ€œIโ€™m aware.โ€

โ€œBut why?โ€

โ€œInformed decision-making is my thing.โ€

She scrolls through the list while mumbling to herself. โ€œThere are things listed here that I donโ€™t do anymore.โ€

I know.ย Unfortunately, I inherited my appreciation for nostalgia from my mother, and I have never been able to outgrow it, which is the only reason why I could never delete the list no matter how many times I tried.

After a few more minutes, she reaches the bottom of the note. โ€œYou only have one negative.โ€

Con: She may never love me back.

โ€œLittle by little, your cons annoyingly started making their way over to the pros column.โ€

Her laugh comes out like a half sob. โ€œThatโ€™s ridiculous.โ€ โ€œNo, Dahlia, thatโ€™sย love.โ€

โ€œYou agreed to a casual relationship knowing your feelings might never be reciprocated?โ€ Disbelief colors her voice.

โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œSome people are worth the risk.โ€ Her bottom lip wobbles.

โ€œLife without you was a series of pros and cons. Risks and rewards. Black and white with very few shades of gray. But then you came back and flipped a switch inside me, flooding my world with color after a ten-year blackout, and I donโ€™t plan on giving that up. Not now. Not ever.โ€

Tears pool near her lash line.

โ€œYou might not believe my words now, but I wonโ€™t stop until you do. So go ahead and try to push me away, but you already know based on our

history that I will stop at nothing to prove you wrong.โ€
