Chapter no 37 – Dahlia

Love Redesigned

A

doorbell chimes in the distance after another round of unbelievable s*x. Julian has more stamina than ten triathlon winners, and although I want to keep up with him, my pussy

officially tapped out for the night, and no amount of lube or oral s*x will change my mind.

โ€œExpecting someone?โ€ I roll off him so he can get up. โ€œNo.โ€ He reaches for his phone and curses.

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s my mom.โ€

I jolt upright. โ€œWhat is she doing here this late?โ€

Loud banging against the front door has both of us staring at each other with wide eyes.

โ€œMy car is outside.โ€ He nods.

โ€œDo you think she will suspect something?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m pretty sure she jumped to conclusions the moment she saw that you were here.โ€

I throw the comforter over my head. โ€œDonโ€™t mind me. Iโ€™m going to stay here forever.โ€

He chuckles as he pulls the comforter down. โ€œIโ€™ll tell her not to make a big deal of it.โ€

โ€œThis is your mother weโ€™re talking about. Iโ€™m pretty sure she is already calling theย Wisteria Weeklyย to announce the news.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll swear her to secrecy.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s cold out here!โ€ The doorbell app echoes her shouting from downstairs.

He presses a button on his phone. โ€œIโ€™m coming now.โ€ โ€œAnd Dahlia?โ€

Good luck getting out of seeing her.

โ€œI heard that,โ€ his mother responds, startling me.

I said that out loud?

Julian muffles his laugh with his fist while I glare at his phone screen. โ€œBe right there.โ€ My attempt at a cheery voice falls flat.

Julian collects our clothes and helps me get dressed in record time before leading me downstairs. I smooth out a wrinkle running down the center of my dress while he opens the front door.

โ€œMa. What are you doing here?โ€

โ€œDahlia!โ€ Josefina brushes past her son and throws her arms around me. โ€œWhat a nice surprise.โ€

I give Julian a look.

She holds me at armโ€™s length. โ€œAre you okay?โ€ โ€œSure? Is there a reason I shouldnโ€™t be?โ€

She shoots her son a terrifying glare. โ€œI saw Rafaโ€™s video.โ€ She turns back to me. โ€œI came here to give Julian a piece of my mind, but I see itโ€™s not necessary.โ€ The grin on her face should come with a warning label.

โ€œOh, I wonโ€™t stop you from giving him hell.โ€ I gesture toward the man standing off to the side with his arms crossed.

โ€œDonโ€™t tempt me.โ€ She plants her hands on her hips. โ€œLuis Julian Lopez Junior, what were you thinking, scaring her like that?โ€

He doesnโ€™t speak.

I place my hand on her shoulder. โ€œItโ€™s fine, Josefina. Julian and I talked it out.โ€

She turns toward me with hearts in her eyes. โ€œDid you?โ€ โ€œYup.โ€

โ€œI was wondering why your dress is on inside outโ€ฆโ€ โ€œWhat?โ€ I turn my neck to check for a tag.

โ€œKidding!โ€

โ€œMa,โ€ Julian groans.

She shrugs. โ€œWhat? I wanted to confirm something.โ€ โ€œThe fact that youโ€™re crazy?โ€

She cackles.

Julian shoots me a look over her shoulder. โ€œJosefina,โ€ I say.

That seems to sober her. โ€œYes?โ€

โ€œDo you mind keeping this between us?โ€ She winces.

โ€œWho did you tell?โ€ Julian grumbles. โ€œRosa.โ€

I want to get annoyed, but Josefina truly canโ€™t help herself. The woman was born with a big heart and an even bigger mouth.

Julian glares at his mother.

Her arms shoot up to her sides in submission. โ€œThatโ€™s it. I swear.โ€

Julian reaches for the door. โ€œCall Rosa on your way home and tell her not to tell anyone else.โ€

Her left brow curves into a perfect arch. โ€œDonโ€™t tell anyoneย what?โ€ โ€œWhat you saw.โ€ He kisses the top of her head before yanking the door

open.

Josefina walks outside. โ€œAnd what exactly did I see?โ€ She bats her lashes at her son.

โ€œToo damn much.โ€ โ€œDonโ€™tโ€”โ€

โ€œTe quiero. Cuรญdate.โ€ He swings the door shut, closing us off yet again from the outside world.

Just how I like it.

Julian tried his hardest to have me stay over, and I nearly caved to his request, but then I remembered our agreement. If I want to protect myself

from getting hurt by him again, I should steer clear of cuddling, late-night pillow talk, and sleepovers.

When I wake up the next morning, I find my mom waiting for me in the kitchen.

Te quiero. Cuรญdate:ย Take Care.

โ€œMami?โ€ I rub the sleep from my eyes. โ€œShouldnโ€™t you be at work?โ€ โ€œI wanted to be here when you woke up.โ€

Ah, shit.ย I knew this conversation was coming once Josefina found me at Julianโ€™s house last night, but I didnโ€™t expect it to happen so soon.

I place a coffee pod in my momโ€™s Nespresso machine before turning around. โ€œIโ€™m sorry you had to find out about everything the way you did.โ€

โ€œYou think Iโ€™m upset?โ€ โ€œYes?โ€

โ€œNo,ย mija. Iโ€™m worried.โ€

Unlike my momโ€™s usual bouts of anxiety, this feels different.

โ€œYou came backโ€ฆso sad. I donโ€™t want to see you like that again.โ€ I drop a teaspoon of sugar in my cup. โ€œIโ€™m doing better.โ€

โ€œI know, which is why I worry.โ€ โ€œThis is different.โ€

โ€œHow so?โ€

โ€œUmโ€ฆโ€ย Yeah, itโ€™s a hard pass on talking about my s*x life.

โ€œItโ€™s not too serious yet,โ€ I say.

She makes a noise in the back of her throat. โ€œWeโ€™re seeing how things go,โ€ I add.

She nods. โ€œYouโ€™re old enough to make your own decisions.โ€

Iโ€™m stunned into silence. I expected my mom to be rattling off about s*x before marriage and rushing to have a church wedding to save my soul, not this.

โ€œThatโ€™s it?โ€ I ask.

She rises from her stool and drops a kiss on the top of my head. โ€œThatโ€™s

it.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re not going to warn me about getting hurt or being stupid or something?โ€

โ€œJulian wonโ€™t hurt you.โ€

I rear back. โ€œHow do you know?โ€

โ€œThe answer is obvious every time I catch him staring at you.โ€ My heart misses a beat. โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€

โ€œThat man would rather hurt himself before putting you in true harmโ€™s way.โ€

I lock my knees together to stop myself from toppling over. โ€œMami.โ€ โ€œItโ€™s been that way since you were kids.โ€

โ€œDo youโ€ฆโ€ My voice trails off. โ€œDo Iย what?โ€

Think he could be the one?

Are you serious, Dahlia? You got out of a serious relationship less than five months ago.

I shake my head. โ€œNothing.โ€

Lily replays the video of me screaming for the fifth time this afternoon. She has spent our entire lunch together showing everyone who will spare a minute of their day.

At this rate, by five p.m., everyone in town will have seen me losing my shit over a ghost that doesnโ€™t exist and a Halloween lawn decoration Rafa found in Josefinaโ€™s garage.

I rise from my seat to the sounds of the waitress and Lily laughing together.

โ€œHey! Wait up!โ€ Lily calls after me. โ€œNo.โ€ I walk out of the diner.

Lily chases after me. โ€œStop!โ€ My sister huffs and puffs as she grabs my arm and yanks me away from my car. โ€œWhat was that about?โ€

I throw my hands in the air. โ€œIโ€™m sick of seeing that video.โ€ โ€œCome on. You have to admit itโ€™s kind of funny.โ€

โ€œItโ€™sย embarrassing.โ€

โ€œI beg to differ. Itโ€™s so cute how you cry out for Julian.โ€ She repeats the part where I almost break into tears.

I bite down on my tongue until I taste blood. โ€œIโ€™m going to kill Rafa for sharing that video in the group chat.โ€

โ€œIt would have been a hate crime to keep this gem hidden from us.โ€ Lily shows me the screenshot she saved as her phoneโ€™s lock screen.

โ€œI wonโ€™t sleep well until I get my revenge.โ€

She rubs her hands together. โ€œWhat are we thinking?โ€ โ€œWe?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re not seriously thinking of doing something fun without me.โ€ โ€œThe fewer the witnesses, the better.โ€

She winks. โ€œJust how I like it.โ€ โ€œYou want to help?โ€

โ€œOf course. You and I are partners in crime.โ€

โ€œSpeaking of crime, your friendโ€™s brother is a deputy, right?โ€

Her smile alone could land her on the FBIโ€™s Most Wanted list. โ€œYes.โ€ โ€œDo you think he is the type to willingly arrest someone who isnโ€™t

actually guilty of a crime?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sure he can be enticed into the idea with a gift card to the townโ€™s bookstore or something like that. Why? Whatโ€™s the plan?โ€

โ€œYou canโ€™t tell anyone.โ€

She holds out her pinkie like we did as kids. โ€œPinkie promise.โ€

I lock mine with hers. โ€œIโ€™m thinking of waiting until after Thanksgiving so he doesnโ€™t suspect a thingโ€ฆโ€
